Sherwood Anderson: Man Lives Alone, Jean M. Hill

Student Work

The purpose of the study is to present as Sherwood Anderson's main theme, man's inability to communicate with his fellows and the resultant loneliness of a lifetime. The intense need for understanding meets with inarticulate voices, walls, isolation, and darkness. No communication is possible, and not only must man be born alone and die alone, he must also live alone.

Social Criticism In Charles Dickens' "Hard Times", Carol L. Fry Aug 1963

Social Criticism In Charles Dickens' "Hard Times", Carol L. Fry

Student Work

Charles Dickens might well have been speaking of his own nineteenth- century England instead of revolutionary France of the late eighteenth-century when he wrote:

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the …

Ee Cummings: Twentieth Century Gadfly, Beryl A. Eagleson Jun 1963

Ee Cummings: Twentieth Century Gadfly, Beryl A. Eagleson

Student Work

Particularly significant in the age of mechanization, automation, and conformity is the existence of a man who continued to maintain his own integrity and whose growth and continuing self-discovery are revealed and expressed in his poems. In this, the year following his death, E. E. Cummings, individual, through his writing may serve as a beacon and an inspiration to those who are caught in a stultifying conformity which attempts to erase every aspect of individual differences.

Mark Twain At Mid-Century, 1950-1961 A Synthesis Of Critical Views Fifty Years After His Death, Margery Blanche Turner

Student Work

The central purpose of the study is to investigate some of the recent criticism, both scholarly and popular, of the literary works of Samuel Longhorn Clemens to try to discover how it reflects the general trends in modern literary criticism. The great surge of popular interest in Mark Twain stems from many sources and has varied causes. Particularly at the close of a very successful anniversary year, it is interesting to make a general survey of the literature, both books and periodicals, in an attempt to synthesize the major ideas expressed in them. For the purpose of this investigation the …

The Semantics Of Stress And Pitch In English, George A. Meyer May 1961

The Semantics Of Stress And Pitch In English, George A. Meyer

Faculty Honor Lectures

Have your ears, not to mention your sensibilities, and your reverence for long established familiar rhythms and meanings been quite rudely jolted?

If each individual present here were to read these well-known lines from the printed page, or recite them from memory, I'm sure that you would, in each case, almost invariably reproduce them with the same stress, pitch, and rhythm patterns. There is comfort and relaxation of mind in rolling out the familiar phrases, with the stresses, relaxation from stress, and variations in pitch, that make them full of meaning.

Contrariwise, when you heard them spoken as I read …

F Scott Fitzgerald: Wealth And The Woman, Goldie Silverman Jan 1961

F Scott Fitzgerald: Wealth And The Woman, Goldie Silverman

Student Work

“Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.” These famous lines by F. Scott Fitzgerald, made more famous by Ernest Hemingway, succinctly compress Fitzgerald's involved feelings about great wealth into one brief statement and served to identify one of Fitzgerald's major themes. For Fitzgerald was fascinated by the wealthy throughout his life; they were the chief subjects of his fiction. He grew up in awe of the man of inherited wealth, and he dissipated his vitality trying to live according to the same pattern. In his early years he was completely dazzled by …

The Sixteenth-Century "Confessyon Of The Fayth Of The Germaynes" In Twentieth-Century American English, Herbert J. Bouman Jun 1960

The Sixteenth-Century "Confessyon Of The Fayth Of The Germaynes" In Twentieth-Century American English, Herbert J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

The same year in which Martin Bucer and his associates met with Martin Luther and his co-workers to establish agreement, at least for the moment, between the two groups of Evangelicals in the Wittenberg Concord, the rediscovered Gospel, which these men loved and proclaimed so well, was brought to another country. Just six years after Augsburg, a mere five after the Editio Princeps of the Augsburg Confession and the Apology, a book came off the press in England with the following imprint on the title page: "The confessyon of the fayth of the Germaynes exhibited to the most victorious Emperour …

Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Opium Addiction And Its Influence On Five Of His Major Poems, Bruce Paul Baker Ii Jun 1960

Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Opium Addiction And Its Influence On Five Of His Major Poems, Bruce Paul Baker Ii

Student Work

In early November of the year 1791 young Samuel Coleridge sat in his room at Jesus College writing to his brother George. The nineteen-year-old had been at residence in the Cambridge college less than two months, but already he was impressing his professors and fellow students with his ability and personality. He had come to the college on a scholarship which, he tells George, “will be worth to me twenty-seven pounds a year.” Moreover, Coleridge has heard a “new regulation at our College” which excites his curiosity: “the man who takes the highest honor in his year of the candidates …

A Study Of The Doctrinal Significance Of Certain Textual Changes Made By The Prophet Joseph Smith In The Four Gospels Of The Inspired Version Of The New Testament, Robert J. Matthews

Theses and Dissertations

The several versions and revisions of the Bible in existence precipitate questions concerning the reliability of many Biblical texts. Each of these versions has an amount of variation from the others, yet all were done my men of accepted scholarship.
Joseph Smith also made a Bible revision, or as he termed it, a "translation," using a King James Version printed in 1828 as the basis. This amended King James Version, although not fully completed, has been published under the title of the Inspired Version of the Holy Scriptures, by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Marvell's "The Garden" As Metamorphosis, Suzanne Teasdale Budel Aug 1959

Marvell's "The Garden" As Metamorphosis, Suzanne Teasdale Budel

Student Work

Each poem may be regarded as a metamorphosis, a transformation, whether because it brings the disconnected elements of life into form, or because it brings new life to old forms. And both of these changes may occur in one poem which will contain, then, something new and something old, weather the old be the reflection of a tradition, or simply a fixed attitude of the poet.

The Self-Revelation Of Isaac Watts In His Poetical Writings, Leroy D. Schroeder Jun 1959

The Self-Revelation Of Isaac Watts In His Poetical Writings, Leroy D. Schroeder

Student Work

Poetry has been called "the natural speech of man." Of the hundreds of thousands of poems written in the English language, a great many are based upon the variety of religious themes. Religion in the 20th century is usually thought of as being a private affair of each individual person; in the 18th century, too, as in all ages, religious feeling has involved subjective impressions and experiences. However, the 18th century was neither a subjective nor a lyrical century, in its main stream of poetical expression, and it is with just a bit of surprise that we encounter an 18th …
