Question: Sir, do you think that man is getting better and better every day in every way? Answer: I think that man tries to be better than he thinks he will be. I think that that is his immorality, that he wants to be better, he wants to be braver, he wants to be more honest than he thinks he will be and sometimes he's not, but then suddenly to his own astonishment he is.

Mysticism is among the great enigmas of human existence. The great religions of mankind incorporate various tenants of mysticism: the “forest seers” of ancient India recited the mystic Vedantic Hymns more than 2000 years before the birth of Christ. These hymns form the foundation of Hinduism. Buddhism, the other great eastern religion, owes its very being to the mystic experience of its founder, Guatama Buddha; and mysticism remains the very essence of it. Even the Chinese, who have been largely dominated by the pragmatic ethics exposed by Confucius, have a mystic strain springing from Lao-Tzu the founder of Taoism.

The Theme Of Infidelity In Negro Blues Songs, Fred Schoning
Student Work
Sometime during the middle or the last century a number of American writers became interested in what was known as "local color" writing and attempts were made to study, analyze, and comprehend the various regions of the America landscape. Along with this came an increase in the use of dialects, and writers attempted to capture the essence of a particular locale through the language of its inhabitants. One of the most interesting aspects of this movement was the increased concern with Negro life, habits, and language.

The substance and the life that produced the novelist Janes Austen were of rare quality. Oscar Firkins states that: the general absence of criticism of her family is remarkable in a person of quick eyesight and brusque tongue. Jane Austen liked her lot in ife and that life was mostly kinsfolk."

An Analysis Of The Biographical Basis For The Political, Economic, Social And Literary Theories Of William Dean Howells, Mary Lee Moldenhauer
Student Work
As a result of a study of some of Howells' social novels, I became interested in the question of whether there might be an autobiographical basis for his social-democratic options, as expressed in his utopian novels of the 1890's. An investigation of the autobiographical works revealed evidence that Howells had developed through personal experiences an emotional attraction to the same socio-democratic values articulated philosophically in the utopian novels. This interest in the relationship between Howells' temperament and theories, as expressed in the 1890's, led me to extend my research to works and personal history belonging to periods of his life …

When Charles lamb was twenty-two years old, his sister killed his mother. Mary, who at thirty-two was almost entirely responsible for a senile father, an invalid mother, and an elderly aunt, broke under the strain, and attacked her apprentice with a case knife when the girl argued with her. When Mrs. Lamb called for help, Mary turned on her mother, stabbing her in the heart. The landlord, responding to the cries of the apprentice, found the mother dead, the father wounded on his forehead by one of Mary's wildly thrown forks, and Mary still standing over her mother.

The Development Ol Sterne's Moral Philosophy, Robert C. Barrier

During an age of unusual and eccentric authors, Laurence Sterne was undoubtedly one of the most unusual and eccentric in evidence. Although a clergyman, he wrote a book that scandalized many of the people who read it and still more of the people who did not. Although married, he openly courted several ladies at one time or another. Although acknowledged today as “sentimentalist,” he wrote biting satire upon many occasions. Although one of the more original writers of his time, he never hesitated to borrow a sermon from another if the need arose. Although possessed a highly analytic mind, he …

Liberation, emancipation, freedom--all have been used to describe the particular nature of the United States’ post World War One era; certainly, the period manifested these characteristics, but along with its revolution in manners and morals, the roar of the 1920s brought with it a renaissance in American literature. Primarily, the time was one of the foremost and limitless variety: a time when writers, freed from tradition by the catalyst of war, could experiment with new forms and techniques; a time when they could reject nineteenth-century idealism in favor for criticism; a time when they could explain man's behavior with the …

The Rise And Fall Of Dick Diver : The Intricate Destiny Of A Spoiled Priest, Wendy Martin Seeger
The Rise And Fall Of Dick Diver : The Intricate Destiny Of A Spoiled Priest, Wendy Martin Seeger
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In his general plan for Tender Is The Night, Fitzgerald delineates Dick Diver as "a natural idealist, a spoiled priets, givin in for various causes to the idea of the haute bourgeoise [sic] and ih his rise to the top of the social world losing his idealism, his talent and turning to drink and dissipation."1
The rise and fall of Dick Diver is the central concern of Tender Is The Night, and an analysis of the novel reveals that Fitzgerald meticulously arranged the details of Diver's intricate destiny. Many readers of the novel, however, were unable to understand the …

The year 1819 was one of the high achievements for John Keats, a young man only twenty-four years old. Between January and May he composed a series of poems that have made him a poet of lasting fame. Among these are “The Eve of St. Agnes,” “The Eve of St. Marl,” “La Belle Dame Sans Merci,” and the famous odes—“Ode to Psyche,” “Ode to a Nightingale,” “Ode on Melancholy,” “Ode of a Grecian Urn” and “Ode on Indolence.”

Emerson's Transcendental Democracy: A Look At Emerson's Views On American Politics, Nadine Ricks

The nineteenth century into which Ralph Waldo Emerson was born was one of the most challenging periods in history. Throughout the world the century marked the rise of the common man, and a revolt against tyranny as evidenced by the revolutions in Italy, Spain and Germany in 1820, the revolutions of the Greeks against the Turks in 1829, the civil revolution in France in 1830, Belgium's revolt against Holland in 1831, and the revolutions throughout Europe in 1848. England avoided these revolutions only because parliament passed a number of reform bills. The revolutions in society, and industry, in intellectual and …

The Women In Byron's "Don Juan", Marlene Gatz
Student Work
In the year 1818 when George Gordon, Lord Byron set himself the task of finding a hero for his forthcoming poem, he significantly enough chose the legendary Spaniard Don Juan. Here he was dealing with a character who has stood the test of time, having been a popular favorite for at least two-hundred years before Byron wrote. Here, too, he was working with a character who, by his notorious conduct, must have endeared himself to Byron.

James Thurber: Owl And Nightingale Of The Twentieth Century, Marlys Hedelund Noonan
Student Work
James Thurber, Twentieth Century American humorist, was both an owl and a nightingale in his writing. As an owl he took a thoughtful, serious view of the ways of men; he pondered the plight of the individual in a theory-laden, mechanical, psychological world. He was the owl of wisdom who meditated and transcribed his judgments and opinions of his fellow man. He was also an owl of darkness, for James Thurber was nearly blind all of his life.

Hazlitt On Burke: A Study Of William Hazlitt's Conflicting Comments On, And The Frequency And Manner In Which He Quoted Edmund Burke, Dorothy Devereux Dustin

"I wish that some one, in these excerpting days, would extract and print together all Hazlitt's passages on Burke," wrote George Saintsbury some sixty years ago. To date no "some one" has done so, although such a compilation would be of great value to any researcher interested in William Hazlitt's political theories (if the musings of an artist-philosopher-literary critic-journalist may be called political theories).
All Hazlitt's biographers have commented on his equivocal attitudes toward Edmund Burke, Herschel Baker's recent book presenting the most comprehensive study; but these comments have been restricted almost exclusively to Hazlitt's extended discussions of the great …
