An Examination Of The Influence Of The Spanish Civil War On American Writing, M. Jean Bressler
An Examination Of The Influence Of The Spanish Civil War On American Writing, M. Jean Bressler
Student Work
Ernest Hemingway's celebrated novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, along with the successful motion picture version, introduced millions of Americans to a nation which had not been widely exploited in their literature since the days of Washington Irving. But in 1940, when this novel appeared, few readers are more than dimly aware that it was only a small, if distinguished, part of a considerable body of writing inspired by the tragic events in Spain between 1936 and 1939. Far more than a local conflict, the Spanish civil war was a catalyst to intellectual and literary activity throughout the Western World, …
A Study Of Leslie Stephen As An Influence On Virginia Woolf, Margaret Miller
A Study Of Leslie Stephen As An Influence On Virginia Woolf, Margaret Miller
Student Work
The thoughtful reader of the novels and critical essays by Virginia Woolf is often aware of her strongly feminist attitudes, her conviction that women occupied for too long a subordinate place in society. Obedience to the universal male dicta touching upon education, money, suffrage, and opinion was decreed for them; their subservient status was early insured by forest, brutal or otherwise, later by public opinion which through inevitable consequence was shaped by male society. The fact that the lot of woman has benefited by radical changes since Virginia Woolf began to write, early in the present century, only makes more …

The Effect Of Time Compression Upon Character In Shakespeare's Tragedies, Dean J. Paulsen
The Effect Of Time Compression Upon Character In Shakespeare's Tragedies, Dean J. Paulsen
Student Work
The many interpretations and analyses of Shakespeare’s plays have led, through studies of Shakespeare’s sources, to comparisons between his plots and characters and those of his predecessors, incident for incident, and trait for trait. These comparisons have yielded up numerous scholastic opinions as to what facet of Shakespeare’s genius is responsible for the excellence of characters he produced. There are those opinions which hold that Shakespeare was merely a clever borrower, and epicurean, as it were, daintily picking and choosing from the dramatic viands ready to his hand. Other opinions, through granting that Shakespeare was a borrower in “the grand …

The Madrigals Of Thomas Morley, Vesta V. Dobson

The “golden age” of the arts in England in the sixteenth century came about largely because of the combined efforts of poets and musicians. That Elizabethan England is renowned for her music and literature is no accident. Experiments in the new musical forms were being made on the continent, particularly in Italy. Here the first efforts were made to fuse music and the drama in purely secular ways. This was finally to lead to the creation of opera, and the form that it was but a step to the creation of other secular vocal forms. The strong hold of the …
Study In The Development Of English Satire In The Sixteenth Century, Vashti Boddie
Study In The Development Of English Satire In The Sixteenth Century, Vashti Boddie
Senior Scholar Papers
In the literary tradition of sixteenth-century England, a new mode of expression arose with the development of formal satire. The pattern branded off into two directions: that which followed the Piers Plowman tradition in the mid 1500's and that which followed the classical models of Horace and Juvenal in the last decade of the century. The latter phase led so inevitably to repercussions among literary and political circles that public authorities had to intervene to stop the flow of libelous satiric literature. Due to the controversial nature of the classical phase, it is this tradition which I shall concentrate on. …
Luther Speaks English, Lewis W. Spitz
Luther Speaks English, Lewis W. Spitz
Concordia Theological Monthly
On Reformation Day, 1955, the first volume of the great American edition of Luther's works was presented to the public. When complete with its fifty-five volumes, it will be by far the largest English edition, a truly outstanding monument of Luther scholarship and a major contribution to the mighty Luther renaissance in our century.
The Rsv And The Small Catechism, George V. Schick
The Rsv And The Small Catechism, George V. Schick
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the theological literature of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod it has been the practice to quote Scripture passages in English in the form in which they appear in the King James Version of 1611. The revision of 1881-1885 and the revision of 1901 in no way affected this custom. Neither achieved any great measure of popularity. The situation appears to be somewhat different in the case of the Holy Bible, Revised Standard Version, which appeared upon the market in 1952 under copyright of the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United …
Tannin Content Of English Walnuts : Thesis ..., Joseph G. Natoli
Tannin Content Of English Walnuts : Thesis ..., Joseph G. Natoli
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Present methods for the production of leather from animal hides still depend from the most part on the use of natural tannin extracts. During the year, 1952, the amount of natural tannin extracts used by the leather industry was 560,452,119 pounds as compared to 35,793,000 pounds of synthetic tanning materials. It is not as yet possible to produce synthetic materials as economically as the natural extracts; the result being that there is still a very great demand for natural tannin extracts. The need for finding new domestic sources of tannins is apparent when the amounts of domestic and imported extracts …
The New Lexicon Of The Greek New Testament, F. W. Gingrich
The New Lexicon Of The Greek New Testament, F. W. Gingrich
Concordia Theological Monthly
Biblical scholarship in the English-speaking world at the present time has only one unabridged lexicon of the Greek New Testament at its disposal, Joseph Henry Thayer's "Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament," first published in 1886 and in a corrected edition in 1889. This was a translation, with many important additions, of the Greek-Latin New Testament lexicon of C. G. Wilke, thoroughly revised by C. L W. Grimm. Arrangements for this translation were first made in 1864, so that a period of 22 years elapsed before the work was finished. This delay was partly due to Professor Thayer's many duties …
The German Hymn In English Translation, Walter G. Tillmanns
The German Hymn In English Translation, Walter G. Tillmanns
Concordia Theological Monthly
The German hymn is one of the most precious treasures of the Lutheran Church. Ever since 1523, when Martin Luther and his co-workers began to write "German Psalms" for the congregation, the hymn and spiritual song has taken its place in the congregational life; next to the preaching of the Word and the teaching of the Catechism, there is nothing so dear to the Lutheran as the rich heritage of the "singing church."
Aldous Huxley's Death Concern, Glenn D. Desmond
Aldous Huxley's Death Concern, Glenn D. Desmond
Student Work
In the long course of his restless career, the informed and articulate intellect of Aldous Leonard Huxley has concerned itself with every major aspect of human fortune, but none more intensely than the ultimate experience of death. This constitutes for many his greatest indictment.
Stages Of Development In The Evolution Of The Hamlet Legend, 1200-1623, Frank M. Paulsen
Stages Of Development In The Evolution Of The Hamlet Legend, 1200-1623, Frank M. Paulsen
Student Work
Probably more time has been misspent in trying to fit together the pieces of the Hamlet puzzle than in all of the investigations into alchemy. From the very beginning of Hamlet criticism there seem to have been two diverse reactions to the play. Carried over the twentieth century, these schools are represented by T. S. Eliot, who holds that Hamlet is an artistic failure, and J. D. Wilson, who justifies, to his own satisfaction, at any rate, every line of the play. If Eliot sits at a table with the Hamlet puzzle before him, his chin in his hand and …
Thinking Clearly On The Rsv, Arthur Katt
Thinking Clearly On The Rsv, Arthur Katt
Concordia Theological Monthly
Every new translation of the Holy Bible has met with opposition. "Whenever a translation is made, the question of its authority as over against the authority of the original or of earlier translations naturally arises." This was the experience of St. Jerome back in the 4th and 5th centuries, when he produced the Vulgate. "At first his translation was met with antagonism, and it was even declared to be heretical." This was true particularly also of our beloved, time-honored King James Version. It took nearly half a century for it to find general acceptance, and quite a bit of the …
Linguistic Experiments And Techniques In James Joyce's "Ulysses", Edith E. Back
Linguistic Experiments And Techniques In James Joyce's "Ulysses", Edith E. Back
Student Work
A complex, changing age requires a complex, flexible medium of expression and interpretation, conventional words and structure may provide clumsy and inadequate to probe the depth of unspoken emotions and thought process or to encompass the stream of life through which individuals pass in every day or a lifetime. The stream-of-consciousness style as developed by James Joyce in Ulysses employs new linguistic and structural techniques in order to portray complex and subtle impressions and relationships.
A Short History Of The Lutheran Church In Great Britain, E. George Pearce
A Short History Of The Lutheran Church In Great Britain, E. George Pearce
Concordia Theological Monthly
“Lutheran” is a word that many English people find hard to pronounce because it is so seldom used in this country. In few countries of Western Europe is the Lutheran Church as little known as it is in Great Britain. When recently an inquiry was made at the B. B. C. in London regarding the possibility of a Lutheran religious broadcast, the surprising reply was given: "It is the policy of the B. B. C. to broadcast only the services of those churches which are in the mainstream of the Christian tradition." How strange that the largest of all Protestant …

Errors In The Use Of English By A Group Of Pre-School Children, Australian Council For Educational Research (Acer)
Information Bulletin 1945-1951
Information Bulletin No. 21 reported the pronunciation errors of a group of pre-school children in an inner suburb of Melbourne. This bulletin reports their errors in English Usage.
The group consisted of twelve boys and twelve girls, all of whom in 1951 enrolled for the first time at a state school in Melbourne. They were observed, and their speech recorded, for the ten days November 20-24, and November 27-December 1st while in a special group formed for the purpose at the Lady Gowrie Centre in Melbourne. Their ages ranged from 4 years 10 months to 5 years 8 months. The …
Imagistic Progression In Donne And The Metaphysicals, George De Witt
Imagistic Progression In Donne And The Metaphysicals, George De Witt
Student Work
Our own age feels a growing affinity with another strangely similar century- that of John Donne. The common qualities which our age shares with the seventeenth century make partially understandable and, perhaps, inevitable our increasing interest in Donne, with his “modernity of outlook, and his disillusioned cynicism, and, for some, his final turning to authority….”1 Robert Hillyer feels that the similarities of the two periods – ours and the seventeenth century – are chiefly responsible for this interest in Donne.
A Study Of Performance In English Skills, Reading Comprehension And Written Composition, Paul Cartson Kennedy
A Study Of Performance In English Skills, Reading Comprehension And Written Composition, Paul Cartson Kennedy
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The problem of this thesis is to determine the extent to which there is direct correlation between a student’s knowledge of general English skills and his performance in reading comprehension and written composition. Certain limitations, definitions of terms, and necessary assumptions naturally come within the scope of the problem. These need to be designated and recognized in order that one may better understand their meaning and significance throughout the study.
The Psycho-Physical Evaluation Of Selected Textbooks In High School English, William G. Hegarty
The Psycho-Physical Evaluation Of Selected Textbooks In High School English, William G. Hegarty
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
That there is a need for scientific analysis and appraisal in the selection of textbooks is well established. The use of a flexible rating scale or chart that may be modified from time to time to meet the needs of present day English fundamentals is of great value in the selection of high school textbooks. Out of such conditions as these arose the particular problem of this thesis, which, specifically stated, is The Psycho-physical Evaluation of Selected Textbooks in School English. The problem is designated psycho-physical evaluation because the study has two areas of investigation. The physical investigation deals only …
Lutheran Sidelights In English History, E. G. Pearce
Lutheran Sidelights In English History, E. G. Pearce
Concordia Theological Monthly
When Lutheran pastors from all over Great Britain met recently for their Third Annual Conference at Wistow Manor in England, it brought to mind certain facts in seventeenth century English history which are of interest to Lutherans. The seventeenth century was the end of a period of transition from the absolutism, civil and religious, of medieval Roman Catholic England to the constitutional monarchy and religious toleration of modern Protestant Britain. It was the era of the Stuart kings with their reactionary leanings toward Romanism as the form most likely to maintain absolute monarchy. It was the century of that strange …

In the Hall of Fame of the nineteenth-century English novelists there has been for the last forty or fifty years one conspicuously empty place. Dickens, Scott, Jane Austin, the Brontes, George Meredith, Thomas Hardy, these have remained unchallenged in their greatness.

Not long ago I listened to a speech by the mayor of one of the. large cities of America. He gave a thoroughly interesting talk, one that hehi the rapt attention of an audience of six or eight hundred people. He was vigorous, fluent, concrete. But his language was marked by the syntax of a semi-literate person, though he is a college man. Such expressions as "he who I was the guest of" and "I was setting across the table from him" made one wince who was sensitive to correct English.
So far as I know, the mayor had never …
The Religious Conversions Of John Donne, Roy Mcauley
The Religious Conversions Of John Donne, Roy Mcauley
Student Work
John Donne, seventeenth century writer, has always enjoyed a certain following as a literary man. He is appreciated now for his poetic genius, but in his day, he was better known as the author of sermons and religious arguments. Donne’s reputation as a poet and a preacher was in eclipse for many years, until revived in the past few decades by students who saw his real genius as a poet. Perhaps one reason Donne was neglected in the past is that he is such a difficult man to understand. Even today the average reader is apt to accept him as …
William Butler Yeats And The Thoor Ballylee, Marion Keller
William Butler Yeats And The Thoor Ballylee, Marion Keller
Student Work
Among contemporary poets, William Butler Yeats remains unsurpassed. His achievement as a poet is even greater when one considers the struggle which was a part of it. Although it is difficult and, perhaps, unwise to claim immorality for contemporary art, the critics have not hesitated to applaud Yeats and claim him as one of the great poets of all time. W. Somerset Maugham said of Yeats: “He was certainly the greatest poet of his generation, and I think it is safe to bet that he will occupy an honorable, more, an exalted place in the long line of poets who, …
The Relation Between The Poetic Concept And Autobiographical Memory In The Works Of Thomas Wolfe, Douglas Carell Taylor
The Relation Between The Poetic Concept And Autobiographical Memory In The Works Of Thomas Wolfe, Douglas Carell Taylor
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Thomas Wolfe's literary output includes four long novels and a vast number of short stories and poems. In addition to this he left a great deal of manuscript which is still in the process of being examined and assorted. His four long novels have drawn the greatest attention, for it is in these that he has done his finest and most provocative work. In each one Wolfe is the central figure, and through his eyes we are allowed to see the world as he saw it. It is because of this that the charges of egotism, paranoia tendencies, genius, immaturity, …

Henry The Eighth's Divorce And Luther, William Dallmann

On June 21, 1529, the King and the Queen of England stood at the bar of Cardinal Campegi, an Italian judge. The Queen appealed to Rome and walked out on him!
The Kaiser “tumed on the heat" and the Pope called the stenchy mess back to Rome and thus broke his papal promise given again and again and again. In other words, he bade Campegi return without publishing the decretal bull declaring Henry's first marriage null and void.
Nothing new. When Benvenuto Cellini rebuked him for breaking a solemn promise, the Vicar of Christ ironically joked he had power to …
The Revised Standard Version Of The New Testament, W. Arndt
The Revised Standard Version Of The New Testament, W. Arndt
Concordia Theological Monthly
This publication comes to us with the legend on the publisher's jacket: "The most important publication in 1946." At first one may be taken aback by such a strong and apparently daring claim, 1946 having only begun; but a little reflection will lead one to say that here we are not dealing with an exaggeration, such as publishing houses are fond of voicing, but with a truly objective evaluation. A new and at that somewhat official translation of the New Testament- what more important work can there appear in this year of grace?
