Nursing Migration And The Global Workforce: How The U.S. Nurse Shortage Impacts Developing Countries, Mololuwa Faithful Lasekan Apr 2026

Nursing Migration And The Global Workforce: How The U.S. Nurse Shortage Impacts Developing Countries, Mololuwa Faithful Lasekan

Honors Thesis

As United States (U.S.) healthcare organizations face persistent staffing gaps driven by an aging population, burnout, and limited educational capacity, many institutions increasingly rely on internationally educated nurses (IENs) to stabilize their workforce. This reliance intersects with longstanding structural challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where inadequate compensation and limited professional opportunities contribute to high migration intentions among nurses. Using a systematic literature review guided by PRISMA principles, this study synthesized evidence and five major themes emerged: (1) push factors driving nurse emigration from LMICs, (2) pull factors attracting nurses to the U.S., (3) digital globalization and post-COVID recruitment …

The Plain Solution To Federal Habeas, Charles Eric Hintz Apr 2026

The Plain Solution To Federal Habeas, Charles Eric Hintz

Utah Law Review

Federal habeas is a mess. The reason is the current doctrine’s myopic proceduralism: its obsession with limiting relief through stringent and Byzantine procedural rules. This has transformed our system of federal postconviction review into an impassible thicket of procedure that forecloses merits review in even strong cases; ensnares everyone in difficult threshold questions; and delays dispositions. Habeas today is thus unfair, opaque, and inefficient, and it fails to promote its own values: fairness, judicial economy, federalism, finality, anti-gamesmanship, and non-technicality. How should we fix this problem? This Article advances a solution based on “plain error” review. Under this approach, habeas’ …

The New Debate Over History: Justice Thomas And Justice Barrett On The Future Of Analogical Reasoning, Jason Buhi Apr 2026

The New Debate Over History: Justice Thomas And Justice Barrett On The Future Of Analogical Reasoning, Jason Buhi

Utah Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court has entered a new era of debate regarding the appropriate use of history and tradition in constitutional interpretation. Justices Thomas and Barrett established the initial terms of that debate in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen (2022), framing the issues as whether courts should interpret individual rights provisions based on their meaning when the Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791 or when the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted in 1868, and what weight post-ratification practice should carry in determining original meaning. The exploration of these issues sparked broader discussions that appear to …

Advancing The Study Of Politics And The Brain: Targets For Research On Neurology And Political Behavior, Glenn W. Rainey Jr.

Commonwealth Review of Political Science

In this paper I argue that advancing research on neurology is creating important opportunities for political scientists to integrate its findings into their research, particularly with regard to the effects of emotional processes on political behavior.  I provide a general background on neural anatomy, genetics, and neurobiological chemicals, and I briefly review techniques of neurological research, the findings that have been developing, and the limitations on the research. I provide an overview of selected key neural anatomy, and neurotransmitters and hormones, that play a role in neurological functions, and particularly in the development and expression of emotions.  I then suggest …

The generation of hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) holds great promise for drug discovery and cell-based therapy for liver disease. However, current differentiation protocols are complicated and unstable, and the underlying gene regulatory mechanisms of hepatic differentiation remain incompletely defined. Here, we developed a machine learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) tool using phase-contrast images of hepatic progenitor cells (HPCs), which are essential for generating HLCs. The AI tool significantly improves the success rate of hepatic differentiation without the need for immunostaining or lineage tracing. By optimizing the methodology, we achieved an impressive purity of 90-95% for HLCs …

Background: Stimulant use disorders (StimUDs), including cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders, remain a major public health concern in the United States with no US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved pharmacological treatments. The early recovery period following stimulant use is marked by sleep disturbances, heightened stress reactivity, and dysregulated reward processing, contributing to high rates of resumption of use. Evidence from animal and human studies supports the orexin neuropeptide system as a promising therapeutic target for minimizing these disruptive mechanisms. Suvorexant, an FDA-approved dual orexin receptor antagonist for insomnia, has previously been shown to improve sleep, reduce stress, and attenuate craving …

The Clinical And Operational Value Of Early Comprehensive Ngs In Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Yunus Emre Demirhan, Marcus Yoakam, Adam Soltani, Arshdeep Gill, Samir Dalia

Student Publications

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for most cases. Advances in targeted therapies and immunotherapy have improved outcomes, but their benefit depends on timely molecular characterization. Early next-generation sequencing (NGS), performed at or near diagnosis, is increasingly used to identify actionable alterations and inform first-line and perioperative treatment planning. In this review, we examine the clinical, operational, and economic rationale for early comprehensive NGS in NSCLC. Upfront sequencing can improve diagnostic yield, preserve limited tissue, reduce turnaround time, and help avoid non-matched systemic therapy. Practical implementation strategies include Molecular …

Viral infection polarizes monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDC) to initiate type 1 immunity. The availability of overlapping (homologous) MHC class I and II epitopes, an occurrence frequently and primarily associated with intracellular infection, significantly enhances this process; however, the underlying mechanism(s) are unclear. We demonstrate that moDC loaded with homologous MHC epitopes acquire a cDC1-like phenotype in a process governed by mTORC1. mTORC1 pathway inhibition leads to NF-κB-mediated expression of IL-12 and other type I immune polarizing genes. The observed cDC1-like gene signature was also significantly enhanced in clinical moDC vaccine products made through methodologies that enforced class I and II …

The Density Dilemma: Reconciling Energy Efficiency And Social Well-Being In Compact Housing, Adeb Ebrahim Apr 2026

The Density Dilemma: Reconciling Energy Efficiency And Social Well-Being In Compact Housing, Adeb Ebrahim

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

This study examines compact housing not only in terms of urban design. From a sequential exploratory mixed-methods approach study on 120 residential units in Sana’a, we observed that there is a paradox where energy modular housing consumes 28% less energy, but social isolation increases 22%. However, this paradox is countered by the design of biophilic shared spaces (β = -0.34). This research establishes a case for more equitably accessible policies on density and proposes that high-density urban fabrics must have a “social connector” code. This study integrates Fainstein's (2020) concept of the 'just city' and contemporary housing innovations into the …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Efforts to support students' academic, social/emotional, personal, and future professional well-being often rely on the collaboration among educational leaders, educators, and community partners. In this study, we examine teachers' perceptions of collaboration among school counselors, principals, and teachers to enhance school culture, with a focus on collective teacher efficacy. We also provide insights for school leaders (e.g., principals, school counselors, and teachers) to implement systemic changes that promote collaboration and student success. This study is framed through the social cognitive theory, where self-efficacy shapes how educators perceive their ability to impact the learning environment and engage students. Using a mixed-methods …
