The Development Of Children's Expertise In Tennis: Knowledge Structure And Sport Performance., Sue Lynn Mcpherson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research examined children's development of knowledge structure and sport performance in tennis. A knowledge test was designed to measure declarative knowledge and a serve and groundstroke skill test were developed to measure skill. An observational instrument was designed to record the components of performance for the serve (decision and execution) and game play following the serve (control, decision and execution). Phase 1 compared expert and novice tennis players within two age levels, 10-11 years-old and 12-13 years-old, on the individual components of tennis performance and on measures of tennis knowledge, serve skill, and groundstroke skill. Experts regardless of age …
The Effects Of Semantic Mapping Instruction On The Text-External Inferences Of College Developmental Readers., Debbie Guice Longman
The Effects Of Semantic Mapping Instruction On The Text-External Inferences Of College Developmental Readers., Debbie Guice Longman
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In reading, text-external inferences are made when the reader integrates schemata with text information. Because inference generation occurs within the reader, background knowledge and reading skill affect inferential comprehension. This research consists of two studies to determine, first, whether college developmental and non-developmental readers activate prior knowledge when reading and making inferences (Experiment One) and, second, if direct instruction in semantic mapping increases activation of prior knowledge by developmental readers. The results of Experiment One indicated non-developmental readers with high prior knowledge use prior knowledge more than developmental subjects and that developmental subjects with high prior knowledge use that knowledge …

A Comparison Of A Computer Programming Approach To A Textbook Approach In Teaching The Mathematics Concept "Variable" To Sixth Graders., Enrique Ortiz
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there was a significant difference in understanding the concept of variable and in attitudes toward mathematics among sixth-grade students who programmed LOGO graphics, students who used textbook-based activities, and students who received no instruction on the concept of variable. The subjects were 89 sixth-grade students (47 female, 42 male) from two middle schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. The Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT), Robustness Semantic Differential (RSD), and Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS) were administered as pre-treatment tests. The study was conducted in two phases, pre-treatment …

Planning And Interactive Decision-Making In Expert Elementary Physical Education Teachers., Deborah J. Howell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This paper describes the planning and interactive decision making used by expert elementary physical education teachers as they developed and taught a 5 day unit on basketball dribbling. Secondly, it explores the relation between teachers' planning productivity (number of statements made) and student achievement. Expert elementary physical education teachers (N = 11) provided information regarding their thought processes during planning and interactive decision making. Planning sessions were conducted prior to each lesson with teachers using the "think aloud" technique. All instructional lessons were videotaped. Following each of the first three lessons, teachers were shown a videotape of the lesson and …

The Relation Between Selected Student Characteristics And Activity Patterns In A Required High School Physical Education Class., Karen Martha Greenockle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study described the activity patterns of students in a high school fitness class and explored the structural relations between particular student characteristics and their coded exercise behavior. Exercise behavior was systematically coded during an 8-week jogging unit in 10 high school physical education classes. Additional measures of distance covered, heart rate, perceived exertion, percent of days participated, and fitness level were also collected. Although percent of time spent jogging was low (18%), with no significant gains made in cardiovascular fitness, the amount of time spent jogging, the distance covered, and fitness level were all significantly correlated (r $>$.48, …
Multicultural Education : A Book Of Readings, Gary Partington (Ed.)
Multicultural Education : A Book Of Readings, Gary Partington (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
The problem of obtaining texts with material relevant to the core course in Aboriginal and Multicultural Education in the W.A. College led me to suggest a book of readings selected by those teaching the course. Obviously this was a trap for the unwary, for the diversity of recommendations that I received meant that unless the book was to be of mammoth proportions, some lecturers were bound to be disappointed. This was compounded by difficulties in tracking down authors to obtain their permission in time to publish.
Even so, it is anticipated that the collection of readings finally assembled will contribute …
Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.)
Teaching Aboriginal Children: Milingimbi And Beyond, Michael Christie (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
The original intention of the contributors was to write a book about their experiences as teachers at Milingimbi in Arnhem Land. Initially, articles were obtained from only those people who had actually taught at Milingimbi. However, theory and practice have changed a great deal since the original articles were put together in 1978. Some of those articles became dated; others were repetitious; some were simply not good enough to be printed.
The collection of articles now presented were all written by people who have taught in Arnhem Land - hence the use of the Arnhem Land words yolngu (Aboriginal) and …

Research outputs pre 2011
In researching and recording historical and anecdotal comment on the Old Bush Schools of Western Australia, John McKenzie has secured oral elements of our history which could well have been lost forever, and woven them into the recorded facts of past decades. He has produced an entertaining and particularly illuminating picture of the life of the small-school teacher in outback Western Australia during most decades of the last one hundred years...

(1987) Educational Reform Through Philosophy For Children, Laurance J. Splitter
(1987) Educational Reform Through Philosophy For Children, Laurance J. Splitter
Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter
Thinking should be incorporated into the curriculum and this crucial task should not be left until secondary school, nor placed in the sole care of the traditional school disciplines. Teaching thinking involves transforming the classroom into a community of inquiry. The key to inquiry at whatever level is structured, organized thinking. By bringing this structure to bear on classroom activity, the teacher can transform ordinary discussion into dialogue. At all levels, teachers and students together must find ways to integrate the dimensions of inquiry and discovery into their activities. Nevertheless, the classroom community of inquiry should be focused around …

Measuring The Incremental Learning Achieved With Computer Enhanced Instruction, Larry N. Bitner, Gail B. Wright
Measuring The Incremental Learning Achieved With Computer Enhanced Instruction, Larry N. Bitner, Gail B. Wright
Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022
There has been increasing pressure by the AACSB on accounting educators to include the use of computers as an instructional tool in the 1980s with the advent of separate accreditation for accounting programs. In response, researchers have sought to study student attitudes and report on software available for classroom uses. From the educational perspective, however, the most important type of research would be that which would evaluate the impact of the computer on the level of learning achieved by the student or would indicate sensitivity to the computer enhanced instruction (CEI). The focus of this paper is to suggest a …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to compare the use of peer administered contingent reinforcement for social interaction with the use of play materials that facilitate interaction. The subsequent effects on the social interaction of mainstreamed preschool handicapped children with their nonhandicapped peers was examined. Three nonhandicapped kindergarten children were paired with three moderately mentally handicapped preschool children and trained to initiate play. A single-subject, alternating treatment design with a withdrawal phase was used to compare the effects of the two treatments. Generalization immediately following each treatment was also examined as was maintenance over time. Observers used an interval recording …

The Effect Of Conversational Skills And Self-Monitoring Training On The Acquisition, Generalization And Maintenance Of Conversational Behaviors Of Elementary Students With Learning-Disabilities, Gail Peterson Craig
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of a conversational skills training package (i.e., instruction, modeling, behavior rehearsal and feedback) with elementary students with learning disabilities. Self-monitoring techniques were incorporated into the training program in an attempt to actively program for generalization and maintenance. It was hypothesized that training in self-monitoring techniques would enhance the transfer of the behaviors to the natural environment and increase their durability. Question-asking, information-adding, and use of minimal encouragers were chosen as the conversational skills to be trained as they had been shown to be important for performing successfully within a conversation. A multiple …

Enok Mortensen And Askov, Hans Henningsen
Enok Mortensen And Askov, Hans Henningsen
The Bridge
The connection between Enok Mortensen and Askov Folk High School in Denmark came about accidentally, as it were, in the middle of the 1950s. The background was that rector Knud Hansen made some critical remarks, in an interview, about the United States and American foreign policy. This caused a great to-do in the press, so much so that the American ambassador decided to visit Askov Folk High School to judge for himself whether it were possible that Askov had "gone communist." Shortly thereafter Knud Hansen received an official invitation to spend three months in the United States. The visit, which …

The Effect Of Cooperative Learning On The Spelling Skills, Self-Concept, And Locus Of Control Of Below Average Learners, Lyle Rangel Edd
Dissertations
THE PROBLEM A pilot study had shown that below average learners have commonalities in their learning styles. Since the literature had demonstrated that matching students’ learning style with a compatible teaching approach could improve the academic performance of children, this study attempted to determine what the impact of teaching cooperatively, a teaching approach that closely matched the preferred learning style of the below average learners, would have on such learners. The impact of the teaching strategy was evaluated through changes in spelling scores, in self-concept and in locus of control. Further, the impact on boys and girls was monitored to …
