Teacher Flexibility In Relation To Classroom Teaching Behaviour And Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Petra Duschner
Teacher Flexibility In Relation To Classroom Teaching Behaviour And Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Petra Duschner
Digitized Theses
The goal of this study was to investigate relationships among teacher flexibility, classroom teaching behaviour, and perceived teacher effectiveness in a sample of 95 secondary school teachers. Teacher flexibility was defined as a global, multifaceted characteristic consisting of both a cognitive and personality component. Three paper-and-pencil measures of each component of flexibility were employed. Frequency of occurrence of specific teaching behaviours and overall teaching effectiveness were rated by students in classes taught by participating teachers, using a 40-item teaching evaluation form.;The results provided very little support for an underlying unidimensional teacher flexibility construct in either the cognitive or personality domain. …
Conflict Management After Rbo: From Process To Procedure, Paul Douglas Bergman
Conflict Management After Rbo: From Process To Procedure, Paul Douglas Bergman
Digitized Theses
The Ontario Ministry of Labor offers a program called Relations By Objectives (RBO) which was used forty-eight times between 1979 and 1985 to help management and union improve their relationships.;Certain writers in the Industrial Relations field have recently questioned the program's ability to create any significant improvements in management-union relationships, suggesting that the program's assumptions and techniques are inappropriate in a union-management setting.;This thesis tracks the RBO program back to its roots--citing original sources where necessary--to illustrate that the Relations By Objectives program has strong theoretical links, and has the potential for significant changes in management-union relationships. The research then …

A Study Of Self-Perceived Current And Desired Career Stages Of Federal Government Engineers And Public School Educators In The Central Florida Area, Dennis Stephan Duke
A Study Of Self-Perceived Current And Desired Career Stages Of Federal Government Engineers And Public School Educators In The Central Florida Area, Dennis Stephan Duke
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the perceptions of public school educators and Federal Government engineers in the Central Florida area to determine their self-perceived current and desired career stages (Dalton, Thompson and Price, 1977). The influences of age, education and tenure variables on these perceptions and on the employee's preference for a technical or managerial career track were also examined. The rationale for the study is based upon findings in the literature which indicate that both occupations are experiencing motivation and retention problems caused by the requirement to leave classrooms or technical engineering positions and enter management ranks in order to gain …

Higher Education And Life Chances: A Study Of Occupational Attainments And Attitudes Among Some Public University Graduates, Richard Peter Talbot
Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigates the post-graduate educational and occupational experiences of the 1968 and 1978 graduates of a state flagship university. First, it explores the influence of parental variables upon respondents' choice of curriculum and of post-graduate study. Second, it examines the occupational placement of the respondents by cohort and by gender. Third, it explores the present attitudes of the respondents by cohort and gender.
A stratified random sampling of the graduates (N = 433) via a mailed survey questionnaire shows that more men than women in the 1968 cohort return their forms. There is the suspicion that only those who …

Occupational Ethos Of Executive Directors Of State Councils On Vocational Education., Michael B. Moon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The fundamental purpose of this study was to describe the occupational ethos of Executive Directors of State Councils on Vocational Education. As the literature concerning education-related occupational ethos is sparse, the study was an effort to contribute to the literature and to provide an understanding of the occupation of Executive Director of State Councils on Vocational Education. The description of the ethos was derived from two significant viewpoints--orientations and sentiments exhibited by the executive directors. Collection of data for this study was accomplished through two means. The first method involved elite interviewing of a sample of 15 current executive directors …

The purpose of this study was to determine what changes occur in individual students' reading comprehension during the non-instructional time period of summer vacation compared to the changes that occurred during an equal instructional time period. Data were obtained from 96 students enrolled in the third, fourth, and fifth grades of an urban public school. The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests, Level C and Level D, Forms 1 and 2, were used to evaluate students' changes in reading comprehension. The three intelligence levels, established through ranking of the Otis-Lennon Mental Abilities Test scores, and three grade placements were used as independent variables …
A Study Of Preschool Directors' And Elementary Principals' Perceptions Of Planning For Children's Transitions From Preschool To Kindergarten, Edward Mitchell Greene
A Study Of Preschool Directors' And Elementary Principals' Perceptions Of Planning For Children's Transitions From Preschool To Kindergarten, Edward Mitchell Greene
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This investigation examines the perceptions of elementary principals and preschool directors in the areas of (a) communication and coordination, (b) child-related information, and (c) program and professional development opportunities. A Likert scale was used to record the levels of agreement, and a formality scale was used to record the presence or absence of practices or policies. Thirty-five elementary principals and thirty-seven preschool directors responded to the survey mailed to each licensed preschool program director and public elementary school principal in a major metropolitan county of Indiana. The two-tailed independent t -test (p $<$.05) was used to determine if significant difference existed between the two groups. The chi-square analysis (p $<$.05) was used to analyze frequency data. As a result of the survey analysis several conclusions were reached. The importance of planning and coordinating children's transitions between preschool and kindergarten is perceived to be important. Information about children's previous experiences is useful in planning for children's entry into school. Program and staff development opportunities are important to preparing for children's transitions between settings. Information about child development and its implications for appropriate practices are known to both groups of respondents, but the information is not used in planning for children's transitions. Preschool directors feel the most useful sources of information about program practices and guidelines are teacher training institutions, while elementary principals prefer school corporation inservices. One recommendation based on this study is to replicate the survey with a larger and more diverse sample to examine the interactions between subgroups of independent variables. Also, the goals and uses of readiness tests and screening instruments should be studied in the preschool and elementary settings. The nature of teacher training and leadership development programs in higherEducation should be examined to determine how they promote the development of skills related to planning for children's transitions.

Gender And Journals: Life And Text In College Composition, Cinthia Lee Gannett
Doctoral Dissertations
Since journals were introduced into the composition curriculum in the 1960's, they have become increasingly important components both of writing and writing across the curriculum courses. Yet the available literature shows we know little about the historical and social contexts of journal and diary keeping. This dissertation looks at the ways gender informs our students' attitudes toward and experience with journal keeping in both academic and nonacademic settings.
Using three men's and three women's journals as the focal point of my discussion, I find striking sex differences both in the quantity and in the "qualities" of the journals they wrote. …
Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini
Cognitive Strategy Training Effects On Reading Comprehension In Learning-Disabled Readers., Erin Cuccia Agostini
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study was conducted to investigate the hypothesis that learning disabled children with reading deficits demonstrate a "production deficiency" by failing to spontaneously employ appropriate cognitive strategies in reading situations. Moreover, it was anticipated that providing them with explicit instruction regarding these strategies would improve their comprehension. Thirty learning disabled seventh- and eighth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three training conditions: (a) summarization, (b) self-questioning, and (c) control. The effectiveness of the training strategies was assessed by having students write an 80-word summary and answer a 10-item multiple choice comprehension test on each of two passages during three …

The Effect Of Vocal Modeling On Pitch-Matching Accuracy Of Children In Grades One Through Six., Georgia A. Green
The Effect Of Vocal Modeling On Pitch-Matching Accuracy Of Children In Grades One Through Six., Georgia A. Green
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of adult female, adult male, and child vocal modeling on the pitch-matching accuracy of children in grades one through six. Because singing is a basic component of the elementary music curriculum and is a skill which a child will continue to use throughout his/her life, it is important to determine how a child can most successfully develop and use his/her singing voice. Existing literature indicates that those factors which most directly affect a child's singing ability are maturation, auditory discrimination, vocal range, and vocal modeling. Conflicting results exist as to …
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr
The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service: A Descriptive History Of Its Origin And Development. (Volumes I And Ii)., Edwin Clark Forrest Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation studies the conditions which brought the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) into existence in 1914 and which have sustained it for over 70 years. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that 40 percent of Russia's population consists of farmers and that approximately 70 percent of China's population are farmers. The significance of these figures in relation to productivity is apparent when contrasted with the United States farm population of 2 percent. The current high level of production in American agriculture, sustained by such a small percentage of the population, is not an accident, as Professor Roy V. Scott, …
Spacing Of Repetitions And Contextual Interference Effects In Motor Skill Learning., Harry John Meeuwsen
Spacing Of Repetitions And Contextual Interference Effects In Motor Skill Learning., Harry John Meeuwsen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Three experiments are reported that examined the possibility that the contextual interference effect in motor skill learning is a variation of a multiple trial spacing of repetitions effect. Specifically, the question why a non-spaced condition in a spacing of multiple trials motor learning paradigm has not produced predicted retention deficits. Subjects in all experiments learned to perform a simple motor skill in a criterion movement time. Experiments 1 and 2 examined why spacing of multiple trials did not produce expected retention performance benefits in previous spacing experiments. The results of Experiment 1 and 2 showed that the randomness of the …
An Investigation Of The Inference And Mapping Components Of The Componential Theory Of Analogical Reasoning., Catherine Sheard
An Investigation Of The Inference And Mapping Components Of The Componential Theory Of Analogical Reasoning., Catherine Sheard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Sternberg's componential theory of analogical reasoning (1977) provides a series of steps that may be followed in order to solve analogies. According to Sternberg, when given a simple analogy (in the form A:B::C: (D$\sb1$, D$\sb2$, D$\sb3$)) the reasoner: (a) encodes the terms of the analogy, (b) infers the relation between A and B, (c) maps the relation between A and C, (d) applies a relation analogous to the inferred one from C to each answer option, choosing the closer option, and (e) responds. The purpose of this research was to further investigate the inference and mapping processes of the componential …
