Education, Autonomy, And Civic Virtue, Richard Dagger
Education, Autonomy, And Civic Virtue, Richard Dagger
Political Science Faculty Publications
The major cause of our crisis in education is lack of agreement on the purpose of education. We can agree on what that purpose is, Richard Dagger argues. if we define it as the promotion of autonomy and civic virtue. Autonomy and civic virtue are often taken to be incompatible because one has to do with individual liberty and the other with collective responsibility. Dagger shows that the charge of incompatibility does not hold up under analysis. The two terms are, rather, complementary.

The major sources of information used included newspapers and magazines, Papers …

On The Methodology Of Locating School Education Facilities In Rural India, Vinod K Tewari, Sidheswar Jena
IIMB Management Review
There has been a vast expansion of school education facilities in India since the launching of the First Five Year Plan in 1951. The findings of the All India Educational Surveys conducted periodically under the direction of the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT). Government of India, have revealed that the benefits of this large-scale expansion of school facilities have not been so satisfactory as were expected; inequalities between different areas as well as between social groups in terms of access to school facilities have persisted. There can be many reasons for these disparities in the access to …

Minerva At Large: A Study Of The Leadership Styles And Educational Philosophies Of The Department Of Education Secretaries, Mark Y. Herring
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1979, President James E. Carter signed into law the thirteenth Cabinet-level office, the Department of Education. Although the United States has had a department, bureau, or office of education since 1867, the newly established Department of Education gave education a seat at the Cabinet table. Since that time, four individuals have served as secretaries: Shirley M. Hufstedler, Terrel H. Bell, William J. Bennett, and Lauro F. Cavazos. Examined in this study were the importance of leadership styles and educational philosophies as exhibited by the four secretaries. A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Civilian Conservation Centers And Contract Centers From 1984 To 1988, Robert P. Slaughter
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the continuous instability of policy decisions relating to the effectiveness of Civilian Conservation Centers and Contract Centers was a result of measurable differences in performance between the two models. Six hypotheses tested differences between types of centers on six quantitative variables which were: average length of stay, job placement, hourly starting wages, educational gains in reading, math, and General Educational Development (GED). To investigate the problem, 30 Civilian Conservation Centers and 17 comparably sized Contract Centers were selected. The Relationship Of Personality Type To Leader Style And Perceived Effectiveness Among Dental Hygiene School Administrators, Susan J. Willette

Selected demographic variables were also examined. The dimensions of personality investigated were derived from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: extroversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving. The leadership behavior dimensions were the two dimensions of the real and ideal Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaires: consideration and initiating structure. Effectiveness was measured by a 39 item Likert-type instrument based on Tucker's (1981) categorical listing of chairperson …

Natural-Resources Education In Utah's Public Schools, John J. Van Niel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Several aspects of natural-resources education were explored in this study. First, a statewide survey of science, social studies, and elementary teachers was conducted to determine the current form and extent of natural-resources education in Utah. Returns were received from 51% of the surveyed teachers. The percent of time devoted to natural resources, the factors affecting natural-resources instruction, and the need to improve that instruction were assessed.
Utilizing that information, the Natural-Resources Curriculum Framework was developed. The Framework is designed to provide educators with the essential concepts to be included in a comprehensive natural-resources program.
Finally, examples of classroom support materials …
