Iep Quality: Changes Observed Following A Period Of Staff Training And Form Revision, Mary M. Spillane

Student Work

During the period 1987-1990, a suburban school district implemented an in-service training program as well as several form revisions for the purpose of improving the quality of IEP documents. The purposes of this study were to document what changes, if any, occurred in the levels of legal compliance and internal consistency in a random sample of IEPs over that three year period, to determine whether a significant difference in the levels of compliance and/or internal consistency existed between IEPS of Level 1 and Level 2 students, and to identify areas of strength and weakness in IEPs.

A Survey To Evaluate The Need For Counseling The Gifted And Talented Elementary Student., Janet E. Schauss

Student Work

Research has shown that the concept of a specially trained counselor to work with gifted and talented elementary students is not new. This thesis was an investigation into the present-day need for a trained gifted and talented elementary counselor. Building principals, classroom teachers, parents of gifted and talented students, and gifted and talented students in two elementary buildings in each of four different school districts completed questionnaires. The hypothesis of the thesis is two-fold: there is the present day need for an educated elementary gifted and talented counselor; school personnel, parents, and students will express willingness to utilize this special …

Women As Managers: Myths And Realities, Carol B. Hillman Mar 1990

Women As Managers: Myths And Realities, Carol B. Hillman

New England Journal of Public Policy

The negative myths about women in management are dying. The new reality is that women can and do manage men and women exceedingly well. Because of this, women clearly have the opportunity to attain economic power and security. But another new reality is raising its ugly head: women who refuse to work for other women or, worse yet, undermine their female managers. Mentors, training, and commitment on the part of institutions to employ them as managers will assure women the fair chance to succeed as managers.

Teenage Parenting Intervention Programs: Implications For Female Secondary School Potential Drop Outs, Patricia Ann Frampton Jan 1990

Teenage Parenting Intervention Programs: Implications For Female Secondary School Potential Drop Outs, Patricia Ann Frampton

Student Work

A myth, as defined by Webster’s New World Dictionary (1975), is “a traditional story serving to explain some phenomenon, custom, or belief, any fictitious story developed to interpret circumstances which defy conventional logic.” Dropping out of school succinctly fits as an occurrence which has deftly baffled educators of the most advanced and well supported school system in the world. Although dropout rates vary (five to twenty five percent) dropping out is not merely about numbers; this factor encompasses “values and philosophies about people, their problems, and what can be done about them” Hamby (1981) Hahn, (1987) and Grossnickle, (1988). An …

G90-988 A Process For Building Coalitions, Georgia L. Stevens Jan 1990

G90-988 A Process For Building Coalitions, Georgia L. Stevens

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

What should you consider in building coalitions? This NebGuide offers guidelines.

What is a Coalition?

1. A coalition is a group of organizations and individuals working together for a common purpose. There are two types of coalitions:

2. "One issue" or event coalitions only have to agree on one particular issue. The coalition is dissolved when the issue has been solved or the event has been coordinated.

"Multi issues" coalitions have related issues, such as nutrition and health, child care needs, elderly health care, or the environment. This more permanent type of coalition recognizes the value of mobilizing together for …

Prior Knowledge And Locating Information In Textbooks, Sonya Eileen Symons Jan 1990

Prior Knowledge And Locating Information In Textbooks, Sonya Eileen Symons

Digitized Theses

The present research assessed the impact of prior knowledge on locating information in textbooks. Undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory psychology course located answers to questions related to fall- or spring-term course content in an introductory-level psychology textbook. In Study 1, students were tested in January when they were familiar with fall-, but not spring-term, content. Students found more answers to fall- than spring-term questions. Fall-term exam was correlated with fall search, even after partialling out verbal competence. In Study 2, students were tested in May. There were no differences in search success for fall- and spring-term questions. Fall and …

Tropomyosin Transformation Accompanying Muscle Fibre Adaptations With Compensatory Hypertrophy, Robert Edward Thayer Jan 1990

Tropomyosin Transformation Accompanying Muscle Fibre Adaptations With Compensatory Hypertrophy, Robert Edward Thayer

Digitized Theses

Tropomyosin (TM), a myofibrillar protein of the thin filament exists in several isoforms and the complement of these isoforms has been demonstrated to be specific to the muscle fibre type. By 30 days of overload, the compensatory overload model induces in the rat plantaris muscle a fibre type transformation which demonstrates an increase in the histochemically determined type 1 fibre content. Overload of the plantaris muscle was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by surgical ablation of the ipsilateral gastrocnemius. The animals were sacrificed at various times post-ablation (2, 5, 7, 15, and 30 days). Both control (CP) and hypertrophied plantaris …
