The Effects Of Community College Information Subsidies On Iowa Legislators, Margaret A. Eyerly Nov 1993

The Effects Of Community College Information Subsidies On Iowa Legislators, Margaret A. Eyerly

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to investigate the communication process between the Iowa legislature and Iowa's community college system. The primary theoretical issue which was studied involved information subsidies. Information subsidies, a subcategory of agenda-setting theory, suggests that an information subsidy is an attempt to produce influence over actions of others by controlling their access to and use of information relevant to those actions. It is referred to as a subsidy because the source of that information makes it available at something less than the cost (or effort) a user would face in the absence of the subsidy (Gandy, …

Law Faculty Publications

This symposium offers perspectives from three religious law traditions: Roman Catholicism, Islam, and Judaism. Each of the three legal traditions offers a comprehensive, normative system that translates doctrine into practice and religious values into concrete directives. While the place of theological law differs in the respective religious bodies, each body asserts a binding authority over its confessional members.

A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barns Oct 1993

A Survey Comparison Of Pest Control And Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators In Kentucky, Thomas G. Barns

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 6th (1993)

A variety of factors including increased urbanization decreased funding for governmental animal damage programs, and increases in some urban wildlife populations have resulted in a greater demand for urban nuisance wildlife control. Historically, this demand was met by Cooperative Extension Service (San Julian 1987), state fish and wildlife agency, or federal wildlife damage control employees (Bollengier 1981) These agencies provided educational materials, consultations, an-or physically removed animals. Recently, there is an increased demand for physical animal removal evidenced by increasing numbers of private Pest control operators (PCO), companies that do general pest or insect control work, specializing in the removal …

Authorial Voice, Implied Audiences And The Drafting Of The 1988 Aids National Mailing, Mary Harris Veeder

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Veeder analyzes changes throughout many drafts of the 1988 ANM and finds that the process of negotiated drafting contributed to its success. She also concludes that risk communicators should focus attention on audience needs rather than competing truth claims.

Town-Village Contrasts In Alaskan Youth Aspirations, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Carole L. Seyfrit Sep 1993

Town-Village Contrasts In Alaskan Youth Aspirations, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Carole L. Seyfrit

Sociology

ABSTRACT. Recent surveys of high school students in Alaska’s Northwest Arctic and Bristol Bay regions reflect the social changes taking place in rural Native communities. Significant differences exist between the aspirations of young people in small villages and those in the larger towns that constitute regional hubs (Kotzebue and Dillingham). Town students, who attend more complete and varied high schools, express greater confidence in their educations and more interest in attending college. Jobs at Red Dog Mine, recently opened in the Northwest Arctic, appeal particularly to young males with strong ties to village life. This labor pool presents special challenges …

Open The Doors : An Analysis Of The Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association, Lisa A. Hohl Aug 1993

Open The Doors : An Analysis Of The Prince Edward County, Virginia, Free School Association, Lisa A. Hohl

Master's Theses

When the Supreme Court ordered integration of public schools in 1954 following Brown vs. Board of Education, Virginia responded with a policy of "massive resistance." Public schools were closed in Prince Edward County between 1959 and 1964. This thesis examines the school closings themselves, but concentrates primarily on the creation, implementation, and effect of the Prince Edward County Free School Association, a privately funded school system that operated during the 1963-1964 school year. Initiated by the Kennedy Administration as a one-year, emergency program, the Free Schools were designed to reestablish formal education for the county's black children. This thesis relied …

An Assessment Of Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, Role Frustration, And Job Satisfaction Of Presidents At Selected Private Four-Year Colleges In The Southeastern United States, Gary W. Juhan Aug 1993

An Assessment Of Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, Role Frustration, And Job Satisfaction Of Presidents At Selected Private Four-Year Colleges In The Southeastern United States, Gary W. Juhan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current literature has suggested that the role of the college president has perhaps become too ambiguous, complex and demanding for an individual to perform for an extended period of time. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between perceived role ambiguity, role conflict, role frustration and job satisfaction of selected private college presidents in the Southeastern United States. The method of the study was correlational in design. Using a thirty-seven item questionnaire developed by the author, data were collected from 141 college presidents of institutions within the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The institutions were private …

The Relationship Between The Construction Of Multidimensional Self-Concept In Second Grade Children And The Level Of Teacher Endorsement Of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, Laura Croom Aug 1993

The Relationship Between The Construction Of Multidimensional Self-Concept In Second Grade Children And The Level Of Teacher Endorsement Of Developmentally Appropriate Practice, Laura Croom

Student Work

The relationship between level of endorsement of developmentally appropriate practice of 14 second grade teachers and the construction of self-concept of children in their classrooms was examined. Teachers were given The Primary Teacher Questionnaire, a beliefs scale that assesses level of endorsement of developmentally appropriate practice, and classified as having a higher or lower endorsement of developmentally appropriate practice. Four children, two boys and two girls, were randomly selected from each of the 14 classrooms and were given The Self Description Questionnaire I, a multidimensional measure of self-concept of children ages 5-8 years of age, in November and again in …

Omitted-Ability Bias And The Increase In The Return To Schooling, Mckinley L. Blackburn, David Neumark Jul 1993

Omitted-Ability Bias And The Increase In The Return To Schooling, Mckinley L. Blackburn, David Neumark

Faculty Publications

Over the 1980s, there were sharp increases in the return to schooling estimated with conventional wage regressions. We explore whether the relationship between ability and schooling changed over this period in ways that would have increased the schooling coefficient in these regressions. Our empirical results reject the hypothesis that an increase in the bias of the schooling coefficient, due to a change in the relationship between ability and schooling, has contributed to observed increases in the return to schooling. We also find that the increase in the schooling return has occurred for workers with relatively high levels of academic ability.

Attitudes Of Language Arts Teachers In The Metropolitan Omaha Area Public High Schools Toward Writing Portfolios, Kara L. Bacon Jul 1993

Attitudes Of Language Arts Teachers In The Metropolitan Omaha Area Public High Schools Toward Writing Portfolios, Kara L. Bacon

Student Work

The basic concern of this study was an analysis of the attitudes and a measurement of any change in attitudes that the Metropolitan Omaha area language art teachers in the senior high schools have towards the use of writing portfolios in the classroom. In this study, the subjects consisted of 134 public high school language art teachers in the Metropolitan Omaha area. A survey written by Johns and VanLeirsburg in 1991 was adapted for this study. The questionnaire focused on three areas: knowledge of portfolios, contents of portfolios, and practical problems of portfolios. The questionnaires were hand-delivered to the subjects …

A Historical Review Of The University Of Nebraska At Omaha Phi Delta Kappa Chapter, Dee W. Rosekrans

Student Work

"History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time; it illuminates reality, vitalizes memory, provides guidance in daily life, and brings us tidings of antiquity" (Marcus Tillius Cicero, 106-43 B.C.). Historical research reconstructs the past, objectively, accurately, and systematically by collecting, evaluating, verifying, and synthesizing evidence to establish facts and reach defensible conclusions.

A Comparison Study Of The Needs Of Parents With Mentally Retarded Children In China And In United States, Keli Mu

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to investigate the needs of parents of mentally retarded children in both China and America and to determine whether a significant difference exists between the needs of the two groups. It was hoped that the study would also help American readers understand more about the needs of Chinese parents. Participants in this study were 72 parents of mentally retarded children. They were composed of 45 Chinese parents from six provinces across China and 28 American parents from Nebraska. The parents responded to a questionnaire on which they rated their needs in the areas of …

Education And Community Development Among Nineteenth-Century Irish And Contemporary Cambodians In Lowell, Massachusetts, Peter N. Kiang Jun 1993

Education And Community Development Among Nineteenth-Century Irish And Contemporary Cambodians In Lowell, Massachusetts, Peter N. Kiang

New England Journal of Public Policy

As cities undergo dramatic demographic changes, schools become important sites of conflict between the interests of established and emerging communities. This article presents a case study of Lowell, Massachusetts, where the second largest Irish community in the country resided during the 1850s, and which is now home to the second largest Cambodian community in the United States. Analysis of nineteenth-century Irish community dynamics, particularly in relation to issues of public education in Lowell, reveals the significance of religious institutions and middle-class entrepreneurs in the process of immigrant community development and highlights important relationships to ethnicity, electoral politics, and economic development. …
