The Efficacy Of The Collaborative Teaching Model For Academically-Able Special Education Students: A Research Report, Paul J. Gerber Jan 1996

The Efficacy Of The Collaborative Teaching Model For Academically-Able Special Education Students: A Research Report, Paul J. Gerber

MERC Publications

Collaborative teaching is a model of teaching students with disabilities who are academically-able in general classes. This service delivery model is unlike paradigms of the past that denoted least restrictive place (i.e. resource room instruction and mainstreaming). This model is predicated on direct services in general classrooms where both special education and general education teachers team teach in order to meet the needs of students with disabilities. The model is being used more and more across the country, and it is gaining favor in school divisions in the greater Richmond area. The purpose of this study was to investigate the …

Parental Involvement In Schools: Case Studies Of Three High Schools In A Southeastern Metropolitan Area, Maike Philipsen

MERC Publications

The purpose of this study is to unearth both degree and nature of parental involvement at three high schools. A brief survey of school personnel - distributed at faculty meetings - was used as an indicator of the degree of parental involvement at each school. Furthermore, teachers and staff were asked to nominate "involve" parents as well as parents who seem to perceive barriers to school involvement. Once the surveys has been analysed, a total number of 52 in-depth interviews - lasting between 30 minutes and 2 hours - were conducted with teachers, school administrators, staff, and "involved" as well …

Development And Evaluation Of An Instrument For Assessing Transfer Of Learning To The Workplace., John H. Reed

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to develop a simple, low-cost, easy to administer and score post-course participant survey that examined perceptions of the influence of certain factors identified as affecting the transfer of learning to the workplace. These factors were in the areas of course design, delivery and relevance as well as personal, organizational and workplace influences on learning transfer. The instrument also used participant perceptions to estimate the level of application of the course learnings before and after the course, their impact on work product and any significant individual or organizational changes resulting from them. Finally, the …

The Effects Of Analytic Reading Skills On Sixth Graders' Ability To Solve Mathematical Story Problems., Linda Hale Eilers Jan 1996

The Effects Of Analytic Reading Skills On Sixth Graders' Ability To Solve Mathematical Story Problems., Linda Hale Eilers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of two levels of instructional treatment on sixth graders' ability to solve mathematical story problems. The two levels of instructional treatment were instruction in the use of graphic organizers in conjunction with specific analytic reading skills and instruction in specific analytic reading instruction alone. These were compared to the absence of either treatment. The steady decline in students' scores on measures of ability to read and solve story problems over the past decade prompted research in three sixth-grade public school classes in northeast Louisiana. The study employed an experimental/control, …

Reflection On Teaching: An Ethnographic Study Of Preservice Teachers' Beliefs And Practices., Thomasine Haskins Mencer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between preservice teachers' expressed beliefs, their practices, and how they described the two. Particular emphasis was given to factors that influenced the preservice teachers' expectations of students. The preservice teachers were in the graduate year of a five year teacher education program that embraced reflective practice. In many ways, the two preservice teachers conformed to the mold of the typical American teacher in that they were middle class, Anglo Saxon, females who were high achievers from small towns. However, the pair differed in their experiences with diversity. The preservice teachers' …

Cognitive Differences And Their Predictive Ability On Reading Performance In Skilled And Unskilled Readers., Mary Elizabeth Carter

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The present study examined the relationships among short-term memory, working memory, phonological awareness, and reading performance as measured by an informal reading inventory. Relationships between and among the tasks, their predictive importance with regard to word recognition, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, and their ability to discriminate among groups of readers were investigated. A battery of tests comprising 14 cognitive variables and 24 reading variables was individually administered to 105 fourth and fifth grade normally achieving readers, unidentified unskilled readers, and school identified unskilled readers. Results revealed that working memory, phonological awareness, and syntactic awareness tasks were significantly intercorrelated among themselves, …

The Application Of Network Analysis To The Study Of Differentially Effective Schools., Maryann Maxwell Durland Jan 1996

The Application Of Network Analysis To The Study Of Differentially Effective Schools., Maryann Maxwell Durland

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study applied network analysis to the exploration of the structural characteristics of differentially effective elementary schools within the framework of school effectiveness research. The study took place in two parts: a Pilot Study, using archived data, and a Field Study, using data from a stratified sample of differentially effective schools. The Centrality-Cohesiveness Model of School Effectiveness, developed through the Pilot Study, defined a communication structure as a function of the leadership status of the principal (defined by the principal's centrality) and the cohesiveness of the faculty (defined as network density). Quantitative results from both the Pilot Study and the …

The Wrath Of Ignorance: Schizophrenic Policies In Access To Health Care For Undocumented Latinas, Antonia J. Spadaro Edd Jan 1996

The Wrath Of Ignorance: Schizophrenic Policies In Access To Health Care For Undocumented Latinas, Antonia J. Spadaro Edd

Dissertations

This study focuses on the problems of health care access experienced by undocumented Latinas: women from Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. Those who are undocumented may encounter significantly reduced access to health care, for the risk of discovery causes them to be more furtive in their activities. Undocumented immigrants to the U.S., especially Latin women, confront myriad obstacles in obtaining health care that are sociocultural, political, economic, and personal. The problem of competing policies in the health care arena represents one of the most formidable obstacles for undocumented persons. These conflicting conditions are such that some services …

Relationship Of Emotional/Behavioral, Intellectual, Life Stress, And Parenting Stress Variables To Language Delay In Preschool-Age Children, Jane Lynn Rasico-Hoffman

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The transactional model (Sameroff & Chandler, 1975) proposes that a child's development is a product of the interaction of child, parent, and environmental factors over time. Based on this model, this study investigated whether the variables of nonverbal intelligence, emotional/behavioral functioning, parenting stress, and life stress discriminated among preschool-age children with mild to moderate delays in language and those with normal language. Sixty preschool children with a mean age of 4 years, 6 months and their parents participated in this study. There were 28 children in the normal language group (N = 28) and 32 children in the mild to …

Assessment Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents Using The Rorschach: An Analysis Of The Ea/Es Relationship, Jordan L. Mulder Jan 1996

Assessment Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents Using The Rorschach: An Analysis Of The Ea/Es Relationship, Jordan L. Mulder

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a long history of debate regarding the validity of the Rorschach Inkblot test. Much of the previous research has involved adult subjects within clinical settings. This study investigates the validity of the Rorschach with adolescents classified as being emotionally disturbed according to theEducational definition. School personnel and, particularly, school psychologists have the difficult task of identifying individuals who are emotionally disturbed (ED). It appears that a valid measure of covert processes may be helpful in making these determinations. Due to the vast number of scores and codes generated from the Rorschach using Exner's (1978) Comprehensive Scoring System, this …

Clinical Utility Of The Smell Identification Test In Differentiating Persons With Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type From Depressed Elderly And Elderly Controls, Theodore Lynn Moretz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate differential diagnosis between Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DAT) and depression is important in providing appropriate treatment to persons suffering from each of these disorders; however, accurately differentiating between these disorders is often problematic. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Smell Identification Test (SIT) could accurately distinguish between persons with DAT; depressed, non-demented elderly; and elderly controls. The sample consisted of three groups of 30 white subjects matched for age, gender, and smoking behavior. Group I consisted of persons with early DAT. Group II consisted of persons diagnosed as suffering from depression and Group III …

Use Of Section 20 Of The Education Act 1928: The Study Of A Contemporary Issue Using The Narrative Form, Janette R. Gray Jan 1996

Use Of Section 20 Of The Education Act 1928: The Study Of A Contemporary Issue Using The Narrative Form, Janette R. Gray

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

There is a growing acceptance in the social sciences that in the telling and reading of a story a form of truth can be developed. This 'truth' will be dependent on the reader actively constructing knowledge from constant reflection and modification using cultural (bounded) knowledge as a basis for comparison. Typically the narrative form employs the use of evocative, contextualised language to create implicit meaning, a plot based on some form of conflict within a temporal framework, and the use of multiple voices and genres. Generalisation from the sequence of events subsumed in the plot is assisted by the effective …

Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker Dec 1995

Chaos Theory In Educational Systems: Principals' Perceptions Of Sensitive Dependence On Initial Conditions, Suzan B. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the characteristic of chaos theory called sensitive dependence on initial conditions or butterfly effect in schools and school systems. The purpose of the study was to develop insight into school systems by determining if categories or factors of behaviors or decisions have been observed in school systems which are sensitive to initial conditions and are therefore likely to produce exponential effects. A modified critical incident technique was used to collect data from experienced principals in three moderate sized regions in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. Participants reported incidents that were sensitive to initial conditions during interviews. The …

An Investigation Of Nebraska Art Teachers' Perceptions And Usage Of Internet Technology., Donalyn M. Heise

Student Work

In order to prepare students to be life long learners in a rapidly changing global and technological society, educators need to promote the use of appropriate technology to support quality learning. Art students, as well as all of today's students, need to be effective communicators, creative problem solvers, and be able to access and manage information in an electronic world. Although Nebraska is already a national leader in telecommunications and telecomputing, the extent to which technology is used and will be used in specific disciplines is as yet unclear. An important first step in supporting the future use of Internet …
