The Convergence Of Analogical And Dialectic Imaginations In Legal Discourse, Linda H. Edwards Jan 1996

The Convergence Of Analogical And Dialectic Imaginations In Legal Discourse, Linda H. Edwards

Scholarly Works

The dialogue over the role of narrative in the making and interpreting of law and in legal practice is often stalemated by confusion about the complex relationships between narrative and other forms of legal reasoning. Are narrative and rules opposing methods for interpretation and persuasion? Does narrative theory assert that lawyers can win cases by presenting a sympathetic story, without regard for the governing rule of law? If so, it is no wonder that conversations about narrative theory are so difficult.

This article explores the relationship between narrative and other forms of legal interpretation and persuasion. It relies on David …

The Relationship Between The Amount Of Time Spent Writing With Computers And The Quality Of Written Work., Mary Ann Green Bragg Jan 1996

The Relationship Between The Amount Of Time Spent Writing With Computers And The Quality Of Written Work., Mary Ann Green Bragg

Student Work

The decade of the 80's witnessed the introduction of a new method for teaching language arts called "Whole Language". A whole language approach provides language instruction as the simultaneous, integrated teaching of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a context that is both meaningful and purposeful for the learner. A new paradigm emerged, demonstrating that "knowledge is internal and subjective, learning is constructing meaning, and teaching is a dynamic combination of coaching and facilitating" (Hiebert, 1989, p. 62). The whole-language movement appears to embody this new paradigm in its most advanced development.

Boys' Participation In Junior Secondary School Physical Education And Sport, Lynn Embrey, M. Drummond Jan 1996

Boys' Participation In Junior Secondary School Physical Education And Sport, Lynn Embrey, M. Drummond

Research outputs pre 2011

According to social lore, boys are meant to be good at Physical Education and sport. There is, however, increasing evidence to the contrary and it is now essential to consider why boys drop out of Physical Education and sport. There has been a good deal of research and subsequent literature detailing the plight of girls' involvement in Physical Education and sport. However, a dearth of literature and research exists where boys Physical Education and sport are concerned. Out of research comes practical implementation strategies that can be adopted by teachers to create a more favourable learning environment. Extensive research on …

(1996) The Practice Of Philosophy In The Classroom, Laurance J. Splitter, Ann Margaret Sharp Jan 1996

(1996) The Practice Of Philosophy In The Classroom, Laurance J. Splitter, Ann Margaret Sharp

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

Philosophy for Children is at once strongly child-centred and highly teacher-sensitive. It encourages students to delve into, and build upon, ideas, concepts and problems that they themselves choose as both interesting and, in some sense, important. Yet it is the teacher who, at least in the first instance, must encourage her students to talk and to listen, who must weave into a coherent form their disparate thoughts and ideas, and who must exemplify modes of thoughtful and reasonable behaviour.

(1996) John Passmore: On Teaching To Be Critical, Laurance J. Splitter Jan 1996

(1996) John Passmore: On Teaching To Be Critical, Laurance J. Splitter

Collected Papers of Laurance J. Splitter

"What," asks John Passmore, "is it to teach a child to be critical, and how can we tell whether we have been successful in doing so?" Notice the phrasing of Passmore's question: his concern is with being critical--that is, with being a critical thinker qua being a person of a certain kind--rather than with (merely) thinking critically. Part of the answer, then, is implicit in the question itself: to be critical is not a matter of being informed, or of blind habit, or even of skill (although he does not altogether deny the skills component). It is, chiefly, an attitude …

Business And Education: A Partnership Worth Investment, Keith W. Harkins Jan 1996

Business And Education: A Partnership Worth Investment, Keith W. Harkins

Theses

This thesis will focus on the potential benefits of a collaboration between business and education in an effort to prepare today's youth for entry into the workforce.

The number of large companies that are becoming involved with education is steadily increasing. Many business leaders have come to realize that business has the ability to provide human and material resources that would enable schools to significantly improve the education students receive.

Student internships may provide a method for both business and education to benefit from such partnerships.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate research regarding partnerships between business …

Common Schools, Uncommon Values: Listening To The Voices Of Dissent, Rosemary C. Salomone Jan 1996

Common Schools, Uncommon Values: Listening To The Voices Of Dissent, Rosemary C. Salomone

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Education in America as we know it today draws its origins from the philosophical perspectives and political objectives of the common school reformers over a century ago. For them, mass education was a primary vehicle for defining ourselves as a nation. Schools would develop civic virtue and a national character through a shared set of values reflected in the school curriculum. The common school experience, offered to all regardless of social class or ethnic background, would assimilate the hordes of immigrants coming to our shores and meet the emerging needs of industrialization. Individuals across the economic spectrum, afforded education …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of principals of selected Catholic secondary schools toward aspects of teacher empowerment. The Attitudes Toward Teacher Empowerment Survey was developed to measure attitudes toward empowering teachers in certain decision areas and to examine attitudes about the effects of teacher empowerment; The instrument was reviewed by two separate expert panels and sent, in final form, to 201 secondary school principals in the western region of the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). The selected principals returned 161 (80.1%) usable surveys; The first part of the survey, items 1 through 29, measured principal …

Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in a Resource Room Practicum course participated. The studies took place over a 16-week semester period; Sixty-seven students from the course participated in Study 1. This study involved the use of three instructional methods to provide instruction to the students (i.e., broadcast classroom, receiving ITV classroom, videotape lectures). Students' achievement, attendance, satisfaction, and evaluation of the instructor were analyzed. Results of this study indicated: (a) achievement was equal, (b) students attended …

Reconstructing Educational Experience: A Postmodern Perspective., Jeanne Edwards Robertson Jan 1996

Reconstructing Educational Experience: A Postmodern Perspective., Jeanne Edwards Robertson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Education in America today is dominated by the either/or thinking of modernism. This mode of thought is connected to both the concepts and methods of modern, mechanistic, Newtonian science. However, the attendant reductionistic methodology has been elevated beyond its realm of efficacy to the level of a world view, a metaphysical level. This is demonstrated by the omnipresence of the machine metaphor in all areas of human endeavor. The machine is the root metaphor of modernism. John Dewey speaks of a "new order of conceptions" necessary for significant change. These new order concepts are manifest in the new or postmodern …

The "Sacred Harp" In The Urban North: 1970-1995., Mark David Johnson Jan 1996

The "Sacred Harp" In The Urban North: 1970-1995., Mark David Johnson

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1994 the Sacred Harp, a southern, shape-note tunebook, entered its 150th year of continuous use. First compiled in 1844 by B. F. White and E. J. King, and updated numerous times, The Sacred Harp books in the "Denson" tradition, including The Sacred Harp: 1991 Edition, are today the most popular and widely used twentieth-century revisions of any nineteenth-century tunebook. Sacred Harp singing has been a largely rural, Southern tradition and in the years between 1844 and the early 1970s several hundred separate singings were founded, many of which continue to be active. In the early 1990s the Sacred Harp …

School Social Climate And Individual Student Achievement In Rural High Schools., Leslie Faye Jones Jan 1996

School Social Climate And Individual Student Achievement In Rural High Schools., Leslie Faye Jones

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined the relationship of individual student achievement with four variables--school social climate, race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Each of these variables was expected to be significantly related to student achievement. Student achievement was measured by the LEAP sores (averages of mathematics, language arts, and writing components of the test). School social climate was measured by the Brookover (1969) school social climate questionnaire. Researchers have searched for years for an explanation of the differences in student achievement levels. The differences in student achievement levels were noted as early as the 1800's, and many studies have been done linking various …

A School For Utopia: Marietta Johnson And The Organic Idea., Janet Ruie Mcgrath Jan 1996

A School For Utopia: Marietta Johnson And The Organic Idea., Janet Ruie Mcgrath

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This history, written from a feminist perspective, uses historical materials which trace unusual social and educational experiments in Fairhope, Alabama, in the early twentieth century. The early development of the utopian Fairhope community, founded by E. B. Gaston and a group of like-minded midwestern social reformers, is reviewed. Gaston's resolve to alleviate the worst inequities of monopolistic capitalism through practicing the single tax principles of Henry George is placed in historical context. Both the social experiment and its ideologically complementary Organic School are situated within the period known as the progressive era which followed closely upon the industrial revolution. The …

Work Motivation And Perceived Organizational Effectiveness In Middle Schools., Cynthia Young Wren Jan 1996

Work Motivation And Perceived Organizational Effectiveness In Middle Schools., Cynthia Young Wren

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the linkage between work motivation derived from the expectancy theory and perceived organizational effectiveness derived from the Parsonian framework. School characteristics of community type, school size, and school socioeconomic status were used as predictor variables in the study. A secondary purpose was to examine these linkages in middle schools and to examine changes over time. Mixed methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative research techniques, were employed. The data were analyzed using the school and the individual teacher as units of analyses. To test the hypotheses, a multiple regression procedure was employed. The …

The Role Of Principals In Predominantly African-American Urban Middle Schools With Low Suspension Rates., Gathogo Wa Mukuria

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of the principals in predominantly African American urban middle schools with low suspension rates. The basic research questions were: How do the perceptions of principals in predominantly African American urban middle schools that have low suspensions rates compare with perceptions of other principals in predominantly African American urban middle schools; and what alternatives to suspensions do principals use in predominantly African-American urban middle schools that have low suspension rates. I approached this study using a mixed methodology strategy, using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Survey items of 54 principals from seven …

Women Who Lead High Schools: A Missing Element In Leadership Theory., Kristy Brock Hebert Jan 1996

Women Who Lead High Schools: A Missing Element In Leadership Theory., Kristy Brock Hebert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

I addressed the problem that leadership theory is lacking in regard to how women lead high schools. My primary purpose was to contribute to the limited literature that exists regarding the leadership practices of women who are high school principals. I explored the notion of a female culture of school leadership and situated that culture among quintessential theory dictated by organizational research. I conducted this study in two phases. In Phase One I reported the demographics of 44 female high school principals in Louisiana along with their self-reported values on 32 leadership characteristics. Most important to their leadership were: communication, …

The Efficacy Of The Collaborative Teaching Model For Academically-Able Special Education Students: A Research Report, Paul J. Gerber Jan 1996

The Efficacy Of The Collaborative Teaching Model For Academically-Able Special Education Students: A Research Report, Paul J. Gerber

MERC Publications

Collaborative teaching is a model of teaching students with disabilities who are academically-able in general classes. This service delivery model is unlike paradigms of the past that denoted least restrictive place (i.e. resource room instruction and mainstreaming). This model is predicated on direct services in general classrooms where both special education and general education teachers team teach in order to meet the needs of students with disabilities. The model is being used more and more across the country, and it is gaining favor in school divisions in the greater Richmond area. The purpose of this study was to investigate the …

Parental Involvement In Schools: Case Studies Of Three High Schools In A Southeastern Metropolitan Area, Maike Philipsen

MERC Publications

The purpose of this study is to unearth both degree and nature of parental involvement at three high schools. A brief survey of school personnel - distributed at faculty meetings - was used as an indicator of the degree of parental involvement at each school. Furthermore, teachers and staff were asked to nominate "involve" parents as well as parents who seem to perceive barriers to school involvement. Once the surveys has been analysed, a total number of 52 in-depth interviews - lasting between 30 minutes and 2 hours - were conducted with teachers, school administrators, staff, and "involved" as well …

Where Are The Women? A Report Into Issues Related To Women's Access To Workplace Literacy Programs, Marion Milton Jan 1996

Where Are The Women? A Report Into Issues Related To Women's Access To Workplace Literacy Programs, Marion Milton

Research outputs pre 2011

This study sought to investigate the provision of workplace literacy courses available for women in female dominated industries, and women's access to and participation in those courses. Further, it was intended to interview women who had dropped out or not accessed available courses.

Prior to discussing the study, it seems appropriate to locate it within the current economic, social and political climate of the Australian workplace, with a particular focus on the increasing demand for literacy skills.
