A Comparison Of Instruction Delivered By Two-Way Interactive Compressed Video And Traditional Conference: Attitudes And Achievement Of Residents In Family Medicine, Yvonne Larocca Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if the attitudes and/or achievement of family practice residents differed as they received instruction by two-way interactive compressed video or by the traditional conference method. The attitude survey, completed before and after the presentations were delivered, provided feedback from the residents in the experimental group on how they felt about the sessions. Pre- and post-test scores provided information about the achievement of residents and the possible difference between scores of those who received the presentations by two-way interactive compressed video as opposed to those taught by the traditional conference method. Results from …

Using African American Perspectives To Promote A More Inclusive Understanding Of Human Communication Theory, Jim Schnell
Using African American Perspectives To Promote A More Inclusive Understanding Of Human Communication Theory, Jim Schnell
Ethnic Studies Review
This article addresses the use of African American Perspectives as a means of promoting a more inclusive understanding of human communication theory. It describes contributions by African American scholars as they relate to providing a framework for inclusion of other under-represented cultures in U.S. society (i.e. Asian American, Latin American, etc.). This objective is becoming more and more relevant because of the increased percentage of U.S. citizens who are of non-European origin. Common sense supports the position that an inclusive curriculum, representative of the many cultural groups that compose the U.S., will appeal to the diverse audience educated in the …

The Judicial System & Equality In Schooling, Frank J. Macciarola, Dorothy Kerzner Lipsky, Alan Gartner
Fordham Urban Law Journal
This Article examines how the concept of equality has played out in the efforts of the courts to define student rights in several important areas. These include school prayer and flag salutation, racial discrimination and cases concerning students with learning disabilities. The Article examines how differences in these areas are first conceptualized and then addressed by the courts. This Article discusses good school practices and addresses the educational methods which have been proven to be effective. The common thread in effective educational doctrine is that programs which integrate and include students are often the most effective education method on many …

The Teacher Education Program at Northern Illinois University is typically divided into two sections: the methods courses/teacher preparation semesters, and the actual sixteen-week student teaching experience. This unintentional separation often leaves the students in the prepatory semesters apprehensive about what is actually going to ,happen when they are student teaching. The student teachers themselves also feel somewhat alienated from the program due to being off-campus. This research project presents a model of how to connect the two divided segments of the Elementary Education program through telecommunications. Students from CIEE 344 were used to complete the model. These pre-semester students searched …

Use Of Reflective Journal In An In-Service Teacher Education Programme: Some Implications For School Improvement, Shahid Siddiqui, Muhammad Memon
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
A considerable amount of research conducted in Europe and elsewhere except in Pakistan indicates that the in-service teacher education programmes facilitated in the implementation and institutionalization of change at school level geared towards the school improvement process (Dalin et.al, 1992). In the past, the in-service education programmes for teachers in Pakistan received little attention of the government since its focus was on the quantitative expansion rather than qualitative augmentation of education. The teachers who attended in-service education programmes found their experiences as a ‘luxury activity’. Most of them seemed to be interested in their traveling and daily allowances (T.A./D.A.) rather …

Teacher Preferences For And Actual Use Of Service Delivery Options: A Study Of Possible Influential Variables., Angela Michelle Waguespack
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Variables influencing teacher preference for and actual use of two service delivery options, consultation and referral for evaluation, have previously been studied in isolation using varying methodologies. In this study, several variables including teacher attributions, organizational characteristics, child characteristics, and classroom behavior were studied in a comprehensive format. The relationship between these variables and teacher outcome expectancies, preference for services, and use of consultation versus referral was investigated. Sixty-seven teachers (grades K-8) seeking assistance for a student with behavior problems participated in the study. Teachers completed a demographic questionnaire, and measures of attributions, perceptions of problems, outcome expectancies, and preference …

Deaf Students In Mainstreamed College Composition Courses Culture And Pedagogy., Tonya Stremlau Johnson
Deaf Students In Mainstreamed College Composition Courses Culture And Pedagogy., Tonya Stremlau Johnson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Composition theorists have already considered the effect of cultural constructs on writing students and have modified pedagogical practices to meet the needs of diverse students. However, disability has remained an almost invisible category in composition studies. This is unfortunate because our society has historically limited the access of the disabled into society, including the academy. Composition teachers need to understand deafness because poor English literacy skills are one culturally constructed attribute associated with hearing loss. The need is especially great now that legal and social developments are encouraging more deaf students to enroll in hearing majority colleges. Also, high-level literacy …
Teachers' Perceptions Of The Principal/Superintendent Relationship And The Organizational Climate Of The School: Do They Correlate?, Catherine Hall Glascock
Teachers' Perceptions Of The Principal/Superintendent Relationship And The Organizational Climate Of The School: Do They Correlate?, Catherine Hall Glascock
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This exploratory study examines teachers' perceptions of the principal/superintendent relationship in terms of hierarchical independence and influence, and whether those teachers' perceptions correlate with perceptions of the organizational climate of the school. A new instrument (TAI) was developed to measure the principal/superintendent relationship. After a literature review, panel of experts, and a principal intern class, a fourteen item instrument was used with the teachers. In order to hold some extraneous variables constant, only principals and superintendents who held office for at least three years were acceptable for the study. Factor analysis was conducted and the results indicate that while the …
The Treatment Utility Of Functional Analyses For Disruptive Classroom Behavior., Carmen D. Broussard
The Treatment Utility Of Functional Analyses For Disruptive Classroom Behavior., Carmen D. Broussard
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Disruptive classroom behaviors are a frequent referral problem in school settings. Although there are several intervention approaches that are commonly used in classroom settings, no standard methodology exists for developing interventions to decrease behavior problems. The primary purpose of this investigation was to develop interventions based upon a functional analysis of disruptive behavior of developmentally normal children in classroom settings, and to analyze treatment effectiveness. Functional analyses which investigated the effect of peer attention, teacher attention, and negative reinforcement (escape) were conducted with five participants. The variable maintaining disruptive classroom behavior was peer attention for all participants. Following the functional …

Honouring Young Children: Research, Curriculum And Practice In Early Childhood Education, Loraine Corrie (Ed.)
Research outputs pre 2011
Early childhood educators tend to be people who like to agree with their colleagues. Often we avoid conflict situations and keep the peace by being silent, rather than raising our voices in dissent. But rapid changes to the field, coupled with the explosion of knowledge in the 90s, have opened up new dilemmas and new challenges for teachers. If we are to meet these challenges in a way that honours young children, then we need to talk about our differences and diverse views in a spirit of trust and professional collegiality.
