We look at the relationship between business simulations and the educational theory of generative learning using the framework developed by Wittrock (1974, 1990, 1992). Our findings reveal opportunities for generative learning that occur at all phases of the simulation process. Awareness of these opportunities prepares faculty to get the most from the strategic decision-making simulations. and may assist them in defining the contribution associated with their use. We suggest areas for additional research.
Strategies Nurse Educators Use To Integrate Computer -Assisted Instruction Into Their Courses To Teach Clinical Decision-Making, Beverly J. Schaefer
Strategies Nurse Educators Use To Integrate Computer -Assisted Instruction Into Their Courses To Teach Clinical Decision-Making, Beverly J. Schaefer
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The strategies nurse educators' use to integrate computer-assisted instruction (CAI) designed to teach clinical decision-making into their courses were investigated to determine their frequency of use and effectiveness. The "Integration of CAI Questionnaire," an on-line electronic survey designed by the investigator, was used to collect data. A stratified randomly-selected group of 109 schools of nursing that was a statistically representative mix of baccalaureate (BSN), associate (AD) and diploma schools from each of six geographic regions of the United States comprised the sample.;The study questions were as follows: (1) What integration strategies have nurse educators used to integrate CAI? (2) How …

From “Separate But Equal,” To Tracking To “Choice”: Perceptions Of Different Stakeholders On The Impact Of Magnet Schools On High School Students, Minerva Medrano Villarreal
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The purpose of this research was to examine and compare the impact of magnet-vocational high schools on the perceptions of seniors from the magnet schools and on those from the comprehensive/host schools. Additionally, the study examined the perceptions that several stakeholders of those schools and of the services and opportunities presented to the students were also investigated. Finally, the perceptions or parents were also investigated.
The Mixed-Methods Design study used several instruments as the primary sources of self-reported data: school district course listing guides, annual progress reports, official district Web sites and literature about district magnet schools. The second component …

The Effects Of A Redirecting Strategy On Self Injurious Behavior Manifested By A Subject With Multiple Disabilities, Maria Estevanes Strickland
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
The purpose of this investigation was to determine if a strategy involving redirection would reduce or extinguish self-injurious behavior (SIB). The subject, a ten-year-old girl, diagnosed with a seizure disorder, functioned at as eight month old level is confined to a wheel chair and is completely dependent on others for transportation and self-care needs. A single subject, ABAB design was used. The study was aimed at measuring SIB episodes during the baseline and treatment phases. A communication board was used during the treatment phases. The results indicate that the use of the communication board successfully reduced the episodes of self-injurious …

Studying The Performance Of A Firewall In Network Courses, José M. Garrido
Faculty Articles
This paper presents a simple simulation model of a firewall to derive several performance metrics and briefly argues on the importance and value of modeling and simulation in courses that study various aspects of perimeter defense in network security.
The simulation model mentioned previously is part of an effort by faculty of our department to develop a multi-disciplinary repository of computational models that includes object-oriented discrete-event simulation models. One of the goals of this repository is to build resources that help educate students of computer science, software engineering, and information technology, in modeling and information security.

The preceding newsletter suggested that electronic portfolios constitute a key element in modern liberal education since they enable us to move beyond the “sanctity of the content” in favor of a more learner-centric approach. Furthermore, it was argued that electronic portfolios enable students to develop reflective skills with respect to learning goals and objectives. Following on, this newsletter, will argue that a variety of other learning technologies can also contribute to enhanced pedagogy and enable faculty to deliver student-centered lectures: i.e. lectures which deliver “the sacred content”, but also engage students and thus contribute towards active and critical learning.

Beyond The “Sanctity Of The Content”: E-Portfolios, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.

Conventionally teaching takes place by reference to “faculty-centered instruction in the oral tradition” which involves the delivery of content via lectures. This is invariably also accompanied by an emphasis on an instructional discourse which features an almost sacred approach to “content” and thus a preponderance of “listening is learning” as the preferred methodology for teaching. (Oblinger and Rush 1997) In this respect and during the last few decades such conventional teaching methodologies which presume “telling is teaching and listening is learning” have had to face the problem of how to cope with the explosion of “new knowledge” emerging daily from …

Exploring Teachers' Perceptions Of Their Preparedness For Culturally Responsive Teaching, Mary T. Brauch Petersen
Student Work
This study sought to examine how teachers perceived they were prepared for culturally responsive teaching (CRT). CRT refers to the ability of a teacher to use prior knowledge or experience to either teach children of diversity certain content topics or to teach all children in the classroom cultural topics. Culturally responsive teaching is demonstrated by teachers' possessing" (a) knowledge and sensitivity about cultural influences, (b) ability to provide a supportive learning context, (c) appropriate instruction and assessment, and (d) facilitation of parental involvement" (Daunic, Correa, & Reyes-Blanes, 2004, p. 106).

Clt’S New Initiative: Mid-Semester Feedback For Instructors, Aziza Ellozy
Faculty Journal Articles
For many reasons, end-of-course evaluation data are not enough. They come in too late to benefit the students doing the evaluation and they do not give us the details we need. They are a one way communication, and students do not believe they make a difference. Feedback activities during the semester are much more effective, and faculty who use these techniques learn more about how to improve their course than they would from end-of-semester evaluations.

Culturally Responsive Teaching: A Resource Guide for Teachers The purpose of this project was to bring to the attention of educators the need to become culturally responsive in their teaching practices. Given the changing demographics within schools in the United States, educators must improve and enhance the learning conditions for their students by understanding the ethnic and cultural backgrounds of all students. A one-day teacher in-service was developed to address the need for educators to develop the practices of culturally responsive teaching while providing this audience with practical examples, information, and strategies to help them more successfully engage their diverse …

Exploring The Education Profile And Pipeline For Latinos In New York State, Anthony De Jesús, Daniel W. Vasquez
Policy Documents
Using various education and census databases 1this policy brief explores the Latino education pipeline in New York State and, where possible, uses disaggregated data to analyze the changes in educational enrollment, attainment, and achievement for Latinos between 1990 and 2000. The education pipeline represents the distribution of Latinos enrolled in pre-school through graduate and professional school in New York State as well as the education attainment levels of the adult population over 25 years of age. Disaggregated data provide the best picture of the educational situation of various Latino subgroups as they relate to each other and other racial/ethnic populations …
