Chasing The Changes: A Survey Of Selected Resources For Classical Horn Players Interested In Jazz, Including Transcriptions Of Three Songs As Performed By Willie Ruff, Kathryn E. Bridwell-Briner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The horn, though not a typical jazz instrument, has been a part of the jazz world from its earliest days. Harry James, Claude Thornhill and Glenn Miller Bands each used French horns. Julius Watkins and John Graas, both horn players, established themselves as composers and improvisers. Since the 1960's, others have followed in their footsteps: Vincent Chancey, Tom Varner, Peter Gordon, Arkady Shilkloper, John Clark, Sharon Freeman, Mark Taylor and Ken Wiley. That being said, the world of jazz horn, though expanding, is still exceedingly small. Horn players ready to explore the idiom of jazz may find teachers, resources and …

Effect Of Self-Efficacy On The Decisions To Enroll And Succeed In Internet Accounting Courses, Abdullah I. Al-Moshaigeh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examines whether there are any significant differences between accounting students enrolled in Internet-based courses and accounting students attending campus-based courses in terms of self-efficacy, academic goal, anxiety, gender, and self-assessment of performance. The study is motivated by the many calls for research to apply social cognitive theory to determine factors of motivation and consequently success of accounting students in an online education environment. Social cognitive theory (Bandura, 1986) is used to develop the hypotheses tested in the current study. Three groups of hypotheses were developed. The first group of hypotheses tests the relationships among academic self-efficacy, computer self-efficacy, …

Factors Affecting Success In Organic Chemistry, Andrea Maria Zaplatynski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In this study we correlate academic and non-academic descriptors with Organic Chemistry final grades for students enrolled at a Florida public university. Using multiple regression analysis, the following predictors are analyzed for a sample population of 904 students: age, gender, ethnicity, academic classification, SAT scores, major, overall grade point average (GPA), semesters lapsed between courses, institution where General Chemistry was taken, prerequisite grades, and number of math and science courses taken with their respective grades. Results indicate strong correlations exist between final grade in Organic Chemistry, GPA and General Chemistry final grade. Additionally, Organic Chemistry final grades correlate with academic …
Exposure To Reading And Motivation To Read As Mediators Of The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Reading Comprehension Skills In Adolescents: A Multi-National Investigation, Kevin J. Vagi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examined the hypothesis that both exposure to reading materials in the home and intrinsic motivation to read mediate the relationship between socioeconomic status and reading comprehension skills in adolescents. Data were derived from the Program for International Student Assessment 2000 dataset (PISA 2000). Six countries out of forty-three were chosen on the basis of country-level SES: two from the bottom 25th percentile (Thailand, Mexico), two at the 50th percentile (Austria, France), and two at the 75th percentile (Norway, United States). Data analysis was conducted on a total of 27,351 participants and 823 schools. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) analyses …
Heartbeat Of A Caring Leader, Lynn K. Robbins
Heartbeat Of A Caring Leader, Lynn K. Robbins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This doctoral dissertation explores the life of an African-American female elementary school principal using a unifying qualitative method incorporating biography, portraiture and anthropology called A renaissance method for studying leadership: A caring perspective. A portrait of the principal was derived using this method where verbatim statements were taken from friends, family, teachers, colleagues and supervisors as well as the principal herself at the school site and the town where she was raised to identify emerging themes. The findings indicate that her humanistic approach to leading in high poverty and minority schools was grounded on her ethic of caring, one that …

Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer
Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Given both the unprecedented attention to the importance of providing children with the best possible science textbooks and the overwhelming evidence that students in the United States are severely lacking the most basic science knowledge, the decline in the number of students pursuing science degrees is alarming. In spite of all the efforts being made, a disparity still exists between (1) the wealth of science information available, (2) the apparent ease of access to scientific information, and (3) the lack of scientific academic progress being made in classrooms across the United States. A literature review was conducted which included the …

Attitudes Des Éducateurs Envers Le Français Et Le Créole: Le Cas D'Haïti, Lesly Jean-François
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Language attitudes represent a serious challenge for Haitian education policy makers. This research is the first attempt to study the attitudes of elementary school educators toward the linguistic situation in Haiti. A survey of 154 teachers addressed their attitudes toward language use, preference and choice, and their stereotypes toward other Haitian native speakers. Three instruments (quantitative questionnaire, Match-Guise-Technique, and qualitative questionnaire) were utilized and two Statistical Methods (descriptive and inference), along with Chi-Square were used in order to observe the significance of differences in independent variables. Since Haitian teachers who participated in this study were assumed bilingual, the questionnaire first …
Using The Rod: Education, Punishment, And The New Woman In Fin De Siã¨Cle British Literature, Kristin C. Ross
Using The Rod: Education, Punishment, And The New Woman In Fin De Siã¨Cle British Literature, Kristin C. Ross
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between female education and punishment in the British novel of the fin de siécle. It considers the “New Woman” (the emancipated, intellectualized, and unmarried prototypical feminist appearing in late nineteenth-century culture) in light of how female education affects fictional characterizations of her. Female education in the “New Woman” and her fictional counterparts worked to destabilize class and gender hierarchies for Victorian Society, producing anxiety in its culture and texts. To defuse this anxiety, authors frequently demonstrated the consequences of espousing the feminism driving the “New Woman” and the education producing her. The education she desired/received …

Factors Influencing The Importance Of Incorporating Competencies Regarding Mass Casualty Incidents Into Baccalaureate-Degree Nursing Programs As Perceived By Currently Employed Faculty, Kristin Whitty
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Whether they are naturally occurring, caused by environmental forces, or generated by humans, disasters have placed extraordinary stresses on society. Following September 11, 2001, the Department of Homeland Security was created to protect the nation and coordinate responses to future emergencies at the federal, state, and local levels. However, Governmental agencies can’t handle all aspects of mass casualty events. Healthcare professionals, such as nurses, who are knowledgeable and trained in mass casualty incidents (MCIs) are needed to provide competent care to the victims. Although others expect a knowledgeable nursing response, the majority of nurse educators have not received mass casualty …

Interview With Dr. Gary Yia Lee, Paul Hillmer
Hmong Oral History Project
Dr. Gary Yia Lee, distinguished anthropologist and scholar, traveled from his home in Sydney, Australia to California for a funeral, then made a stop to visit family in the Twin Cities. Tou Thao, his nephew, is an alumnus of Concordia University and a founder of the Hmong Oral History Project. He prevailed on his kind uncle, despite jet lag, the exhausting effects of a three-day funeral, and many, many demands on his time (including a presentation at Concordia University on 29 December), to sit down with me. I owe many thanks-and apologies-to Dr. Lee, his wife Maylee Lee, and the …

Telling The Stars: A Quantitative Approach To Assessing The Use Of Folk Tales In Science Education., Margaret B. Meyers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the impact of paired folk tales and science explanations on students in third through sixth grades who viewed program modules from the SkyTeller Project of Lynn Moroney and the Lunar and Planetary Institute of Houston, Texas. The audience consisted of over 3500 students in eight locations in the United States. Because few quantitative studies have been conducted to examine the use of stories in science education, the development of an instrument to assess students' attitudes toward science and stories forms a major part of this research. During the final stage of testing, the revised instrument and methods …

Teachers’ Experiences Of Learning Science: A Case Of Autobiographical Reflection, Nelofer Halai
Teachers’ Experiences Of Learning Science: A Case Of Autobiographical Reflection, Nelofer Halai
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This paper analyzes the experience of learning science in school of 34 teachers enrolled in a science methods course in the M.Ed. programme offered by the Aga Khan University, Pakistan. The participants were expected to write their reflections after recalling their experience of learning science in school. The findings reveal that the majority of teachers recalled negative experiences of learning science and that the teaching style of their teachers influenced the way they feel about science even to this day. It follows that if teachers are helped to recall their own experience of learning science in the classroom, it opens …

Grading In Games Of Status: Marking Exams And Setting Wages, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos
Grading In Games Of Status: Marking Exams And Setting Wages, Pradeep Dubey, John Geanakoplos
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We introduce grading into games of status. Each player chooses effort, producing a stochastic output or score. Utilities depend on the ranking of all the scores. By clustering scores into grades, the ranking is coarsened, and the incentives to work are changed. We first apply games of status to grading exams. Our main conclusion is that if students care primarily about their status (relative rank) in class, they are often best motivated to work not by revealing their exact numerical exam scores (100,99,…,1), but instead by clumping them into coarse categories ( A,B,C ). When student abilities are disparate, the …

Citizenship Education In Pakistani Schools: Problems And Possibilities, Bernadette L. Dean
Citizenship Education In Pakistani Schools: Problems And Possibilities, Bernadette L. Dean
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
A critical aspect of education that is often overlooked or inadequately addressed is the preparation of school students for citizenship. This paper assesses the current state of citizenship education in Pakistani schools. It draws on the findings of two research studies: an analysis of the social studies curriculum and textbooks and a review of teaching and learning practices in schools. The findings indicate that the curriculum and textbooks do not distinguish between Islamic education and citizenship education and promotes exclusionary and passive citizenship. They also shows that while Pakistani students acquire knowledge and learn some important values in schools, they …
