Personnel Staff Attitudes Toward The Employment Of Persons With Physical Disability, Mental Retardation, Or Mental Illness, Karol Ruth Oldenburg

This thesis describes a measurement of personnel staff attitudes and perceptions toward the employability of disabled job applicants. More specifically, direct comparisons among three types of disability categories were made using Osgood's Semantic Scaling Method. Sixty employment professionals of the Lincoln Human Resources Management Association rated a job applicant with physical disability, with mental retardation, and one with mental illness on the basis of 15 paired opposite adjectives. These adjectives described a variety of attributes which could be grouped into evaluative, potency, and activity dimensions of semantic space. Running With Running Shoes Versus Barefoot Running: A Videographical Analysis, Nikolaos Stergiou

The purpose of this study was to kinematically describe the movements of the lower extremities in running with running shoes and running barefoot. Another purpose of this study was to identify and compare the anatomical and mechanical adaptations that occur. Seven college age females, members of the University of Nebraska at Omaha cross-country team, and one local competitive long-distance female runner 27 yrs old, were subjects of this study. All subjects were free of any physical disability that could have caused an impaired performance.

The purpose of this project is to develop a childbirth education handbook for expectant parents that specifically follows the ongoing childbirth classes taught at Logan Regional Hospital. At present, much of the information that is provided to expectant parents comes from companies that advertise their products through childbirth education brochures. It is desirable that the students be provided with a complete, objective handbook to supplement the instruction received in the classroom.

Soup and Bread is a program that allows students to easily donate money to different charities through eating soup and bread once a week. In order to keep the program running, they need a minimum of 350 participants, but the program kept missing the quota of participants. Age-Associated Changes In The Kinetics Of Ventilation And Pulmonary Gas Exchange, Mark Anthony Babcock

The purpose of these studies was to examine ageing effects on the dynamics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during the transition from light to moderate work. In the first study maximal oxygen uptake (VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}max), ventilation threshold (VeT), the time constant for VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar} ({dollar}\tau\sp\prime{dollar}VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}), and efficiency were determined from a ramp forcing test in eighty-three males aged 30 to 84y. The results showed a decline in VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}max with age of {dollar}-{dollar}0.037 1{dollar}\cdot{dollar}min{dollar}\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} per year. The VeT also declined with age but at one-third the rate of loss of the VO{dollar}\sb2{dollar}max. Criticisms of secondary schooling invariably highlight four unresolved issues; weaknesses and deficits in graduates' proficiency, subject area failure rates, disorder in the classroom, and dropout rates. These issues persist despite the efforts of educators, periodic reforms imposed by governments, and a seeming abundance of school learning and achievement research. However, this research primarily concerns either pre- or post-secondary schooling. The limited secondary school research mainly has focused only on particular subject areas and, moreover, has considered relatively few of all the potentially relevant variables. A mini-school was set up in Cedar River Elementary School in Maple Valley, Washington. The mini-school will keep the same students and teachers together for a three-year period of time. There will be a fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classroom, each with its own teacher. Research suggests that students in small schools perceive a closer, warmer relationship with their teachers, fellow students and other adults and a stronger connection with the school. This dissertation uses the term "culture" as a metaphor to describe teachers as they participate in the three-week summer writing program at the University of New Hampshire. Using ethnographic methodology, it blends composition theory, anthropology, folkloristics, and psychology. In the voice of the participant observer, the study describes and interprets both the people and the event as a "readable social institution." Teachers live inside a close collegial environment, a temporary, "liminal" state, away from their home and school responsibilities. They form a dialectical relationship with the "culture" as they write and talk inside a social environment in which other teachers …

A microcomputer program has been developed to keep records on energy, labor costs, product pricing, and revenue predictions for greenhouse and nursery production. The program manages plant production data, potentially enabling the grower to improve production and profits. The grower can use the program to determine how much it costs to produce individual plants, to ascertain labor costs and where to reallocate employees. Advertising and other indirect costs can be included to determine cost of production on a per-plant or per-square-foot basis.

Two independent, but closely related, grant funded educational programs were developed and implemented to reduce soil erosion in selected areas of eastern Nebraska. Traditional extension programming methods as well as other more non-traditional approaches were used extensively to enhance soil conservation practice adoption. In one program, encompassing 220 000 ha (540,000 acre) of cropland, annual soil erosion was reduced by 2.3 million t (2.5 million ton) and annual fuel savings of 1.5 million L (390,000 gal) were achieved through a reduction in the number of tillage operations. The purpose of this study was to examine directed and spontaneous transfer of college developmental reading students' textmarking strategy use. Two males and two females enrolled in a developmental reading course at Louisiana State University participated. Participants were asked to use textmarking strategies in their introductory biology course. During scheduled meetings with the researcher, participants turned in their annotated material, discussed textmarking progress, and received feedback on the quality of their annotations. The purpose of this study was to examine the instructional effects of incorporating prediction activities in a high school biology genetics curriculum. Criteria for instructional effectiveness included enhanced levels of classroom discussion and interaction, improved subject-related attitude, higher achievement motivation, and greater mastery of genetics concepts. Genetics was chosen as the domain of research because of the multiple variables operating which make it amenable to the making of predictions. Four experienced high school biology teachers taught an experimental and a control class. The purpose of this ethnographic research was to study kindergarten students' literacy skills and stress-related behaviors and a teacher's instructional behavior before and after demonstrations in appropriate bookreading strategies. A lower socio-economic setting, which previously had been identified by Burts, Hart, Charlesworth, and Kirk (1990a) as a developmentally inappropriate instructional environment, was selected for observation as one which might be amenable to change. The demonstrations included bookreading strategies that the kindergarten teacher could implement to promote the acquisition of literacy in ways that do not contribute to stress. The purpose of this study was to identify personality types among dental hygiene school administrators and faculty and to determine if correlations existed between leader style, ideologies of leader style, perceived effectiveness, and personality type. Selected demographic variables were also examined. The dimensions of personality investigated were derived from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: extroversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving. The leadership behavior dimensions were the two dimensions of the real and ideal Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaires: consideration and initiating structure. Several aspects of natural-resources education were explored in this study. First, a statewide survey of science, social studies, and elementary teachers was conducted to determine the current form and extent of natural-resources education in Utah. Returns were received from 51% of the surveyed teachers. The percent of time devoted to natural resources, the factors affecting natural-resources instruction, and the need to improve that instruction were assessed.

Utilizing that information, the Natural-Resources Curriculum Framework was developed. The Framework is designed to provide educators with the essential concepts to be included in a comprehensive natural-resources program.

This dissertation explores the development of student- and process-centered writing classrooms within the context of a traditionally structured, curriculum-centered high school. The focus of the study is on how teachers and students experience and address contradictions between assumptions implicit in writing process pedagogy and assumptions implicit in the structure and organization of the high school.

An eight-month ethnography of two high school English classrooms, the study is a descriptive narrative of the classroom and school events punctuated by the reflective comments of teachers and students in intensive and extensive interviews. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of human sexuality programs within Catholic secondary schools. This study investigated the effect of comprehensive or non-comprehensive sexuality programs upon students' Positive Sexual Attitudes, awareness of Catholic Church Teachings, integration of Catholic Church Values, integration of current Social Values, and Biological Knowledge.
