The Problem: Science education at the elementary level has not been successful. As a nation we are producing fewer and fewer scientists and science teachers, as evidenced by the narrowing of the pipeline of students entering science classes in high school and beyond. Since a student's interest in science begins at the elementary level, any improvement in science education in these grades will help ameliorate the trend toward science illiteracy. Such an improvement rests on three critical areas: the teacher, the curriculum, and the methodology. Abstract Those who believe education should involve more than learning facts often stress either (a) development or (b) thinking skills. A focus on development as a goal of education typically entails a conception of knowledge as organismic, holistic, and internally generated. In contrast, thinking skills programs commonly assume a mechanistic, reductionist perspective in which good thinking consists of some finite number of directly teachable skills. A conception of rationality as a goal of education is proposed that incorporates the complementary strengths and avoids the limitations of the developmental and thinking skills approaches. The perceptions of elementary teachers with regard to the leadership behavior exhibited by their principals and to the organizational climate of their schools were examined in this study. The purpose of the study was to determine whether Tennessee elementary principals who achieved Career Ladder III standing exhibited more effective leadership behaviors and maintained a more suitable organizational climates than Career Ladder I principals. This study followed the ex-post facto research approach and utilized data obtained through use of the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire Form 12 (LBDQ-12) and the Revised Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire (OCDQ-RE). The effectiveness of psychoeducational-psychosocial discussion groups, which focused on cognitive, affective, and behavioral responses to foster care, in helping pre-emancipated foster care adolescents meet intra- and interpersonal needs of impending exit from care, was investigated. Fourteen females and 16 males, ages 14 to 19, who had experienced histories of impermanence, were referred by child welfare personnel. A selected sample, pretest-posttest-follow-up, waiting list control group design was utilized. The eight-week treatment focused on variables of career decision-making strategy certainty, family environment perceptions, depression, self-perceptions and school-related behaviors with regard to teachers, peers, and academic tasks. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of a readiness year on children's later school performance and self-concept. An examination of teachers' attitudes towards readiness and expectations for students' performance was also included.

School records of fourth graders in two New Hampshire school districts were examined. Classroom grades, standardized test scores, Gesell School Readiness Test results, age, and sex were recorded for each participating student. A self-perception scale was administered to the students near the end of the third grade.

Teachers in the two districts completed a questionnaire composed of a series of vignettes. Five variables …

This study sought to determine whether functional Malaysian families differed from functional Caucasian-American families in family environment, parenting style, and marital adjustment, in terms of behavior-rating measures of family problem-solving and self-report measures of family environment and marital adjustment. Variables for the sample of 38 families were assessed using the Family Problem-Solving Behavior Coding System, the Problem-Solving Efficiency Scale, the Beavers-Timberlawn Family Evaluation Scale, the Family Environment Scale, and the Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Test. Significance was determined by comparing ratings between Malaysian and American families. Malaysian and Caucasian-American families were not significantly different regarding parenting style and family environment variables. …

Research, interviews and studies were done to point out problems beginning teachers have in their first year of employment. Due to these problems, beginning teachers need to know where to go for help. Administrators, secretarial services and custodial services can be very beneficial to aid the beginning teacher in the first year of employment. The aim of this project is to create a handbook for beginning teachers in the Walla Walla School District with the research discussed.

The purpose of this workshop was to inform Lincoln County R-III teachers of the valuable aspects of cooperative or team learning . Research has shown that students at all grade levels have benefitted both academically and socially. Also, with this learning method alternative, teachers and students alike derived pleasure from the improved relaxed atmosphere brought about by collegial learning . The workshop, staged in 3 two-hour sessions, enabled elementary, junior-high, and secondary teachers to learn about cooperative learning while being cooperative learners . Social Learning Therapy For Families With Aggressive Boys: Individual Family Versus Parent-Group Treatment, H. Alan Reid

This study investigated the effectiveness of a time-limited, parent group therapy model for reducing aggressive and disruptive behavior in seven- to thirteen-year-old boys. Comparative differences between an individual counseling versus a parent group implementation of a social learning family counseling model were studied. Twenty families completed the parent group treatment program offered by the Family Therapy Project at Indiana State University. These families completed pre- and post-treatment assessments in order to determine treatment gains in the areas of child behavior, family environment/relationships, family problem-solving abilities, and marital adjustment/satisfaction. The Lactate Threshold And Carbon Dioxide Flow To The Lung As Predictors Of Ventilation During Exercise., Becky Anne Baker

Three studies were performed to determine the relationship between blood lactate, CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung, and ventilation during exercise. First, the method of determining the lactate threshold by use of log-log and semilog transformations developed by Beaver and his colleagues was modified to provide an objective method of determining the threshold which resulted in a significantly better fit (p $<$.05) of the log-log model to the data. Second, to test the theory that the increase in CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung due to bicarbonate buffering of H+ from lactic acid causes the rise in ventilation out of proportion to VO$\sb2$ at the ventilatory threshold, the lactate thresholds of these subjects were used to predict their ventilatory thresholds. The lactate threshold determined by the modified log-log model/method was a poor predictor with an insignificant relationship between the lactate and ventilatory thresholds (p $>$.05). In the third study, six subjects were tested during 4 sessions to determine the relationship between ventilation and CO$\sb2$ flow to the lung during exercise and also during rest and exercise while CO$\sb2$ was being inhaled. The study was aimed at determining the relationship between two production variables--technology use, and production of export quality fruit--of small banana farmers in the Rio Grande Valley, Jamaica and selected socioeconomic, personal characteristic and opinion variables, assessing the amount of variance in production explained by the latter, and identifying variables that moderate or mediate the relationship between production variables. The target population was 120 farmers selling bananas to a public boxing plant. A random sample of non-banana farmers was used as a cross-validation check to make inferences to all farmers. This study described the effect of relaxation and laughter on the perceived intensity and affect of pain induced by a cold water pressor test. Equal numbers of female athletic and non-athletic subjects (N = 36) were selected from varsity athletes and undergraduates at Louisiana State University. All subjects were pre-tested on their tolerance to a cold water pressor test. Responses on visual analogue scales for perceived pain intensity (I) and affect (A), and submersion time were recorded. This study explores the relationship between eschatology and curriculum theory. Themes such as liberation, emancipatory knowledge, transformative pedagogy, concepts of time, impact of the future on present experience, and learning landscapes are traced in the emerging literature of theology and of curriculum theory. The mutual interest in these themes in both fields of study provides the basis for moving toward an eschatological curriculum theory. The reconceptualization which has occurred in curriculum theory and the new emphasis on eschatology in twentieth century theology both provide a foundation for this curriculum theory rooted in hope. This study examined the effects of knowledge of subject matter (overhand throwing) and of throwing-specific instructional strategies on teacher's interactive thinking. The impact of these two categories of teacher knowledge on lesson objectives, the quality of skill practice, and kindergartners' overhand throwing development over a unit of instruction were also explored. Eight kindergarten classroom teachers who possessed high generic teaching skill competence taught a six-week overhand throwing unit to the children (N = 150) in their intact classes. This population study of the certification qualifications of the secondary science teachers of the Upper East Tennessee region in 1984-85 was conducted to determine if there was a qualification shortage in any science-teaching area at the beginning of the Comprehensive Education Reform Act (CERA). Data were obtained from the Tennessee State Department of Education Preliminary Report Forms for Staff. Subject certification data and 1984-85 teaching assignment were analyzed to find percentages of infield, out-of-field teaching and the size of the internal pool of active certificated science teachers who were not teaching.
