In the last two decades a tremendous volume of research data has been collected about differences between female and male students in mathematics. But although the amount of data collected has been large, there have been few conscious attempts to understand this data in social, economic, technological, and political terms. This history of academic research on gender differences connects the explosion of academic interest in the 1970s and 1980s with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and the sense of technological crisis that pervades mathematics education and popular consciousness. The problem related to this study was to determine which components of the Tennessee Principal's Administrator Academy are effective and which ineffective in influencing the principal's performance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the Principal's Academy that influences the principal's day-to-day job performance at the local school site. The study also attempted to determine if factors such as age, size of school, per pupil expenditure, number of teachers on the respondent's staff, educational level, school setting, years in present position, years attending the academy had any effect on the administrator's perceptions of the academy. The concept of locus of control, as an aspect of the human personality, has remained of interest to researchers since its identification by Julian Rotter in the 1960s. Beginning with the work of French and Raven in the 1950s, the concept of power and its interrelationship with leadership ability has also continued to be of interest to social scientists and educators. This study was completed in response to the lack of previous research on the relationship of locus of control to power style usage and preference. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of occupational stress among nurse administrators and to identify the types of strategies used by nurse administrators to deal with or manage occupational stress. The study examined the relationship between selected demographic variables, occupational stress, and strategies. The research design included five research questions along with seven null hypotheses testing the relationship between occupational stress and demographic variables--age, gender, marital status, years of professional nursing experience, years as a nurse administrator, educational attainment, and hospital bed capacity. This experimental investigation was aimed at determining the effect of matching learning styles and instruction upon academic achievement of students receiving an interactive learning experience in chemistry. The purpose of the study was to isolate four basic learning styles, design style-specific instruction, and test their effects upon student academic achievement levels in an interactive learning environment. This was an experimental investigation utilizing a post-test only control group with randomization research design. The Differences In Maternal Stress Levels Between Participants And Non-Participants In Formal Parenteducation Programs, Nancy Jean Tully

This study examined the differences in stress levels of first time mothers of newborn children as measured by The Parenting Stress Index (PSI) (Abidin, 1986). Two groups of mothers were compared. One group of parents were subscribers to the monthly publication, Growing Child, and another group of mothers did not receive any specific instruction regarding child development. The data were gathered in a pretest-posttest format with an approximate interval of six months. Data were analyzed using t-tests and scatterplots. Results showed insignificant differences between pretest to posttest gain scores on the Child Domain, Parent Domain and Total Stress scales of …

The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of coordinators with the Board of International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) of sustainable agriculture, and practices and the ideas needed to promote it. The study also sought to verify Crosson's model of agricultural productivity and land potential. A three-part, field tested questionnaire was mailed to all 157 Title XII coordinators at Land Grant Universities throughout the United States. Of the 103 returned questionnaires a 58.6% usable response rate was obtained. An additional 21 responses obtained from nonrespondents reached by phone showed no significant differences from mail respondents. Descriptive statistics, Cramer's …

The purpose of this study was to identify academic variables that could be used to forecast success for minority, baccalaureate (BSN) students enrolled in higher education in the south. A second purpose was to develop a methodological framework for predicting success on the post-1988 versions of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN), that enhanced external validity, and generalizability. The best predictors of success for minority BSN nursing students were the Mosby assesstest, school comprehensive exit exams, GPA microbiology, the college cumulative GPA, nursing course cumulative GPA, and ACT composite. As a result of science reform efforts in the United States numerous shortcomings of the predominant curricula have been identified. The following study evaluates a modular, environmental science curriculum entitled Wild Louisiana, which attempts to address these shortcomings. Wild Louisiana is Science-Technology-Society (STS) oriented and infuses regionally based instructional videos and simulation-gaming activities into the secondary science curriculum. The videos and activities depict the confluence of regional biological, technical, and social phenomena to illustrate universal environmental concepts. Theoretical sampling was used to select 30 high school biology and college zoology students who examined a simulation involving island biogeography. The literature base for the study was scientific reasoning, problem solving, and prescientific conceptions. The research questions were answered using qualitative and quantitative methods. The first research question was: What number and what type of variables would be used to evaluate biological data? The students used 19 categories of variables, and the most frequently used were size, distance, and food. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concepts prevalent among students in specific physical science related classes and to identify what classroom teachers would do when confronted with this knowledge. A 40 item instrument, Misconception Identification in Science Questionnaire (MISQ), was developed to identify certain concepts in the areas of force, heat, light, and electricity and administered to 509 students. Interviews were conducted with a stratified sampling of 27 students to validate the instrument. The text of this dissertation explores interconnections between cosmology and curriculum. I believe the demands of an Ecozoic Age will initiate a reconceptualizing of curriculum. Further, I believe the particular cosmological perspective I advance can help us with this reconceptualization. Chapter 1 utilizes the multi-faceted insights of scientific, historical, and speculative thought. The texts used in this chapter incorporate an engagement with past cultures (Ong, Eliade), with contemporary theoretical perspectives (Munitz, Haught, and Stafford), and with a scholarship that envisions alternative futures (Bohm). The purpose of this study was to identify the plant science concepts which should be taught in secondary agriculture programs of the future as perceived by innovators in the field of plant science. The Delphi technique was used to gain the perceptions of a nation-wide panel of plant science professionals. The panel was comprised of three groups of plant scientists: secondary plant science teachers, university plant scientists, and plant scientists working in industry.
