Relationship Between Reported Childhood And Adult Physical Activity, Kipp Ryan Kissinger Apr 2000

Relationship Between Reported Childhood And Adult Physical Activity, Kipp Ryan Kissinger

Student Work

It was the purpose of this research to examine the relationship between reported childhood and adult physical activity (PA), with special regards to the types of activities that correlate with habitual activity. Subjects were 249 male and female students age 19 to 30 years (M = 21.9 years) enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Subjects were surveyed from all departments on campus. Subjects were asked to complete a survey instrument that assessed past and present PA. The results o f the current study reported that there is a significant positive correlation (r = 0.284, p < 0.05) between the total score of past childhood PA and present adult PA. When past PA was divided into preteen and adolescent periods, there were also significant relationships (p < 0.05) with all of the four indices of present PA (work, sport, leisure and total). Regression analysis explained 17.6 % of the variance in exercise when predicting adult PA from the total score of past PA. The prediction equation is as follows: Y ' = 27.761 + 0.775 (Xi) + 0.276 ( X 2 ) + 0.945 ( X 3 ) + 1.787 (3Ct) - 1.254 ( X 5 ) ; where Xi = number o f varsity athletic letters received as an adolescent, X 2 = informal activities as a preteen, X 3 = level of athletic ability or coordination in favorite sport as an adolescent, X* = P.F.. classes as an adolescent, and X5 = activity level compared to peers as a preteen. It was concluded that there was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the total score of past PA and each of the four indices of present PA.

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2000-02-10, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 1991-2000

On the front page of this edition of the Wooster Voice, there is an article discussing the vandalism of Kauke Arch. In typical Wooster tradition, students attempted to fill the arch with snow in the hopes of having classes cancelled for their efforts. However, some students took it too far and caused $12,000 worth of damage. In the heat of the moment, a group of students decided to leave some "surprises" for the plows, which included ripped up benches from around campus. In the pages that follow, there is an article about the Bissman Wrestling Federation's making it's debut in …

The Voice: 1991-2000

In the days that followed, the committee cleared SGA from all allegations of charter violations and unconstitutionality. The other front page headline article is on the subject of the Director of Human Resources at the college. Gary Thompson, the director, was sentenced on January 2nd, 2000 for an alcohol-related arrest from the year before (December, 1999). Thompson failed a sobriety test after being pulled over for speeding on the way to …

The Voice: 1991-2000

This edition of the Wooster Voice opens with an article about one of the professors at the college. A political science professor became the first lady of Croatia. Professor Dijana Plestina's husband Ivica Racan became the first opposition party prime minister in the history of Croatia. Furthermore, there is an article that discusses SGA's loss of 5 of its members, 4 representatives and one cabinet member. This left SGA with only 17 members, and 2 weeks until the budget/funding meeting. In the pages that follow, there is an article in the News Brief section that discusses hazing at the college. …

Peer education is often used to effect changes in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors at the individual level. However, peer education may also create change at the group or societal level by modifying norms and stimulating collective action that contributes to changes in policies and programs. Worldwide, peer education is one of the most widely used strategies to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Alcohol Consumption Patterns, Death Attitudes, And Personal Meaning Among College Women, Christopher Hugh Nolan

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Viktor Frankl's logotheory proposes that personal meaning in life and the attitudes people hold toward their own subjective mortality play important mediating roles in the way individuals choose to view and conduct their lives. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of Frankl's existential model in explaining problem drinking among college women by determining whether there are group differences in personal meaning and death attitudes as a function of alcohol consumption patterns. The sample consisted of 154 college women whose patterns of alcohol consumption allowed for participant classification into one of three groups: (a) non-drinkers (n = …

Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack Jan 2000

Ec00-1879 Sorghum Ergot In The Northern Great Plains, Jim Stack

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Sorghum is grown throughout Nebraska on approximately 0.6 million acres of land. It is grown as a forage crop as well as a grain crop. There is no significant commercial seed production in Nebraska. Grain sorghum is used domestically as livestock feed, in ethanol production, and to a limited extent as a food crop.

Grain sorghum is also exported to several countries. All sorghum hybrids (grain and forage) are susceptible to ergot disease. Ergot is a disease that impacts sorghum production directly by infecting unfertilized flowers and preventing seed development. Ergot also impacts sorghum production indirectly. Affected fields with honeydew-covered …

Nurses and physicians at all six clinics attended a two-day training session on contraceptives with an emphasis on barrier methods. Providers in the three clinics that had been randomly chosen as intervention sites also received three days of training on sexuality, gender, and counseling skills. To assess the acceptability of sexuality counseling …

Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole Jan 2000

Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland And The Challenge To Educational Disadvantage, Jackie O'Toole

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Acknowledging the common assumption locating the impact of education in its role to act as a mediator between origins and destinations, this paper examines Early Childhood Care and Education [ECCE], particularly the role state provided, compensatory education plays in challenging educational disadvantage. Initially operationalisation is made of the key concepts of ECCE, equality of opportunity and educational disadvantage. I then move to briefly describe the historical development of ECCE and compensatory education. Three state provided compensatory education programmes are identified: Rutland Street Project, Breaking the Cycle and Early Start. I conclude by outlining the significant impact early interventions can have …

Participating high school students were drawn from Dead Zone source and effect areas---Iowa chemistry students and Louisiana environmental science students. Students were given a pre- and postinstructional survey concerning environmental issues---including the issue of the Dead Zone or hypoxia of the Gulf of Mexico. The treatment group visited a web site on the Dead Zone constructed for this study, and interacted with …
