Hope is a valuable asset for children, adolescents, and adults. Individuals with high hope are better able to navigate around obstacles by using pathways and agency thoughts toward their goals. Studies with children and adults have demonstrated that hope is related to several positive constructs, including academic and athletic ability, problem solving and coping, physical health, and psychological adjustment. This study explores hope in Catholic school students. Because Catholic schools provide a unique faith community for their students, a better understanding of the characteristics of children in these settings is important. Analyses showed that Catholic school students' hope scores were …

What Are Teachers Doing To Accommodate For Special Needs Students In The Classroom?, Brenda Stevens, Caroline Everington, Stacy Kozar-Kocsis
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
Elementary teachers (N=42) from a district implementing inclusive practice were surveyed to determine: a) if the frequency of curricular modifications made differ by type of student disability, b) if there is a difference in the frequency of curricular modifications made for special and typical students, and c) if a relationship exists between modifications made for special needs students and for typical students. Results indicate the frequency of teachers' curricular modifications does not differ by type of disability; that they make significantly more frequent modifications for special needs students; and that there is a significant relationship between the frequency of modifications …

A Three Dimensional Model For The Inclusion Of Children With Disabilities, Kimberly G. Griffith Ph.D., Mark J. Cooper Ph.D., Ravic P. Ringlaben
Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education
The main thrust of preparation for inclusion has been to prepare the general education teacher as well as the student with exceptionalities for this educational initiative. Students without disabilities are often not the prevailing focus in these efforts. This model is an archetype that enables peers to understand, accept, and care for their classmates with exceptionalities. Students acquire knowledge about disabilities, skills are developed that help them interact appropriately, and activities are provided that influence more positive thoughts and behaviors among all students. A circle is used as a metaphor to explain the relationship of individuals in the class. The …

Self -Perception Of Competence And Its Relationship To The Academic Achievement Of Students Attending Middle School, Louis Jr. Cavallo
Self -Perception Of Competence And Its Relationship To The Academic Achievement Of Students Attending Middle School, Louis Jr. Cavallo
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1982, the National Middle School Association published This We Believe, which outlines the general characteristics of developmentally responsive middle schools. The characteristics include interdisciplinary teaching teams, advisory programs, exploratory courses, and expanded extracurricular programs (NMSA, 1982). These middle school components that address affective characteristics were developed, in part, to ensure that adolescents attending middle school are provided with the opportunity to have positive interpersonal relations with an adult advisor, a smaller learning community within the larger school, and opportunities to develop positive peer relations. While developmentally responsive middle schools have an emphasis on the affective characteristics of adolescent development, …

A Case Study Of The Effects Of Residential And School Mobility On Academic Achievement Among At -Risk High School Students, Karen Marie Andrews
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether student residential and school mobility were related to alternative high school student academic achievement as measured by Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) scores and final cumulative grade point average (GPA). Residential and school mobility were defined using Swanson and Schneider's categories: movers, students who move from one residence to another but do not change schools; changers, students who change schools but do not move from one residence to another; and leavers, students who both move from one residence to another and change schools. The investigation was conducted as a case study of …

Identifying Gifted African-American Students: A Case Study Of A Louisiana School System, Donna Lynn Sutton
Identifying Gifted African-American Students: A Case Study Of A Louisiana School System, Donna Lynn Sutton
Doctoral Dissertations
In 1995, the Office for Civil Rights conducted a compliance review of the Bayou Parish School System (a pseudonym) in Louisiana. The review revealed a statistically significant underrepresentation of African-American students in the Bayou Parish gifted program. This case study examined how African-American representation in a gifted program may be increased through the use of research-based interventions implemented by the Office for Civil Rights.
The researcher used both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and analyze data. Documents from the Office for Civil Rights and the Louisiana Department of Education were examined to: (a) show patterns of African-American and nonminority …
Microfinance And Households Coping With Hiv/Aids In Zimbabwe: An Exploratory Study, Horizons Program
Microfinance And Households Coping With Hiv/Aids In Zimbabwe: An Exploratory Study, Horizons Program
HIV and AIDS
The widespread prevalence of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa adversely affects millions of households. In recent years, microfinance has been proposed as a strategy to help the households of microentrepreneurs respond to the negative economic impacts of HIV/AIDS. This attention to the potential role of microfinance builds upon earlier research that shows that microfinance institutions (MFIs) that charge commercial rates of interest and use sound business practices can become operationally self-sustainable and help improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable nonpoor. This type of MFI generally offers small loans, often combined with savings services. An MFI may also offer business …

The Manifestation Of Leadership In Three High -Flying New Hampshire Elementary Schools, Steven Thomas Kelley
The Manifestation Of Leadership In Three High -Flying New Hampshire Elementary Schools, Steven Thomas Kelley
Doctoral Dissertations
Perhaps the most dominant feature marking today's educational landscape is the presence and growth of "reform efforts" occurring in schools everywhere. Educational institutions across the U.S. struggle to reform and improve the teaching and learning that occurs within their walls. The public demands higher standards, has greater expectations, and demands academic excellence. State testing has pointed out strengths and weaknesses present in our schools and in some cases, prompted state governments to intervene in an attempt to "rescue" schools that are not demonstrating adequate progress.
Over the past fifty years, school administrators and educational researchers have been captivated by the …

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Making Change In Early Head Start, Patrice W. Hallock
Doctoral Dissertations

Its purpose is to understand the social context of infants born into poverty and to understand the home visiting relationship when families receive intervention services from home visitors who are socially and economically different. Two questions were posed: First, how do socially and economically diverse families perceive infant well-being? Second, what is the experience of families who participate in Early Head Start? The study used interviews, participant observation, and cultural interpretation to understand the perspective of participant families.
The study provided evidence that economically and socially …
