Arrangements Of N Planes Resulting In One Bounded Tetrahedral Chamber, Ava Knight Jan 2026

Arrangements Of N Planes Resulting In One Bounded Tetrahedral Chamber, Ava Knight

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This paper investigates the combinatorial geometry of plane arrangements in three-dimensional space, focusing on configurations that produce exactly one bounded tetrahedral chamber. We define T(n) as the number of face-combinatorial equivalence classes of arrangements of n planes in ℝ³ containing exactly one bounded tetrahedral chamber. Known values — T(3) = 0, T(4) = 1, and T(5) = 2 — are established through direct construction, while T(6) remains an open problem. This paper contributes experimental evidence toward resolving T(6) by systematically extending the two valid 5-plane arrangements and verifying, through a plane removal argument, that each yields a valid plane configuration …

From Touchbacks To Touchdowns: Analyzing The Impact Of The Nfl's New Kickoff Rule Changes, Joshua A. Klatt Jan 2026

From Touchbacks To Touchdowns: Analyzing The Impact Of The Nfl's New Kickoff Rule Changes, Joshua A. Klatt

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

My proposal analyzes the impact of the NFL's new dynamic kickoff rule changes that were implemented in the Fall of 2024. I use a two-way fixed effects differences-in-differences model using FBS collegiate Division 1 football teams as the control group, and NFL teams as the treatment group. Three of the most important outcome variables I analyze are touchdowns per kickoff return, average yards per kickoff return, and the number of kickoff returns per game.

Machine Learning For Recession Prediction, Ethan Reusser Jan 2026

Machine Learning For Recession Prediction, Ethan Reusser

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Macroeconomic predictions present challenges in machine learning due to the rarity of economic recessions, the constantly-changing matter of global markets, and severe class imbalance in historical data. This project focuses on predicting the onset of United States economic recessions within a 12-month window using Python and Jupyter Notebook. A machine learning pipeline was developed utilizing multiple models: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks. For class imbalance, the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) was applied strictly to training data, paired with Platt scaling for calibration on thresholds. The resulting models were evaluated in the 2005 …

Overview And Methods Of Molecular Paleontology: A Review, Shelby Touchstone Jan 2026

Overview And Methods Of Molecular Paleontology: A Review, Shelby Touchstone

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Molecular paleontology—the study of ancient biomolecules preserved in fossils and sediments, including ancient DNA, lipids, and proteins—has motivated researchers since the 1950s, inspiring both scientific inquiry and broader cultural imagination. Think Jurassic Park. This honors thesis presents a comprehensive review of the history, current state, and methods of the field of molecular paleontology. Drawing on peer-reviewed literature and scholarly resources accessed through databases such as EBSCO and Bierce library, this review examines key techniques such as Next Generation Sequencing and amino acid racemization and will go over limitations and controversies in the field. It will also explore potential new …

Emotional And Social Perception In Hearing And Deaf Individuals, Julie Klenotic Jan 2026

Emotional And Social Perception In Hearing And Deaf Individuals, Julie Klenotic

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This study will compare the differences in emotional recognition and social dynamic understanding between hearing and Deaf people. I will investigate the differences in these areas between hearing and Deaf individuals, as well as the role American Sign Language use has in performance. It will utilize point light walkers which will display the emotions happy, angry, sad, and neutral. Participants will be asked which emotion is being displayed based on the presented gait of the point light walker. Second, they will view 15 videos from the Interpersonal Perception Task without audio. The questions from the IPT 15 will then be …

Behavior Of A Komodo Dragon In Relation To Whole-Prey Feeding, Gurkiran Kaur Natt Jan 2026

Behavior Of A Komodo Dragon In Relation To Whole-Prey Feeding, Gurkiran Kaur Natt

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

In zoological settings, whole-prey feeding is an enrichment strategy widely used to prompt naturalistic behaviors; yet, the specific behavioral shifts this causes in reptiles are not well-documented. This study focused on the activity budgets and spatial use of a six-year-old male Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis) housed at the Akron Zoo, analyzing his movements in direct response to whole-prey feeding sessions. Over an eight-week observation period, instantaneous scan sampling was utilized to quantify behaviors before and after two distinct whole-prey feeding sessions. Although active behaviors and "not visible" instances increased marginally post-feeding, paired t-tests confirmed these shifts were not statistically significant …
