Alert fatigue occurs during long hour shifts and high stress situations. Constant notifications and on-call shifts can create overstimulation and desensitization, which leads to delay responses and increased vulnerability. Malicious actors have weaponized alert fatigue by storming a network with a vast number of low-priority events to mask their malicious activity, also known as alert storming. This project focuses on the reduction of alert fatigue by automating log analysis with Large Language Models. The project uses Amazon Web Service and its many features, such as Amazon GuardDuty, Lambda, and Bedrock. Amazon GuardDuty detects anomalies, then lambda sends those anomalies to …

Secure Peer-To-Peer Messaging Using Distributed Servers, Jack Stoller
Secure Peer-To-Peer Messaging Using Distributed Servers, Jack Stoller
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Traditional messaging systems that rely on centralized infrastructure often introduce three security vulnerabilities: single points of failure susceptible to availability attacks, metadata leakage, and man-in-the-middle attacks.
This project designs, implements, and validates a distributed peer-to-peer messaging system that addresses each of these concerns through architectural design. A consistent hash ring is used with virtual nodes to distribute user data across a mesh of connected nodes, eliminating centralized dependency on any single server. Message contents travel directly between browser clients over a WebRTC data channel secured with end-to-end DTLS encryption, bypassing the server infrastructure. Inter-node communication is protected by mutual TLS …

The Effect Of Minimum Wage On Household Debts And Delinquencies, Payton G. Rader
The Effect Of Minimum Wage On Household Debts And Delinquencies, Payton G. Rader
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This paper examines how increases in binding minimum wages affect various types of household debts and delinquency rates. Within this paper, household debt is defined as the combined sum of auto loans, credit card debt, mortgage debt, and student loan debt. The goal of the analysis is to conclude whether minimum wage increases are contributing to America’s growing debt crisis. The answer to this question likely relies on whether or not minimum wage increases cause unemployment. This is because unemployment can contribute significantly to debt levels when unemployed people rely on credit for day-to-day transactions or payments. Traditional economic theory …

Fear, Memory, And Deterrence: Reassessing Nuclear Peace In The 21st Century, Nathan H. Schroeder
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
This research investigates the paradox of nuclear peace theory: the idea that nuclear weapons, despite their destructive capacity, have contributed to a more stable global order. By tracing the historical development of nuclear arsenals and the strategic logic of deterrence, the project examines whether the post-1945 decline in large-scale wars between superpowers and wartime deaths can be attributed to the threat of mutual annihilation. It also explores the psychological and cultural consequences of this deterrence-based peace, including the normalization of fear and its potential link to desensitization toward violence in younger generations. From Cold War-era school drills to modern apocalyptic …

Fact Vs. Fiction: Understanding The Influence Of Crime Procedural Television On College Student Choice Of Major, Mia J. Moore
Fact Vs. Fiction: Understanding The Influence Of Crime Procedural Television On College Student Choice Of Major, Mia J. Moore
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
As it continues to gain popularity, crime-based media (i.e., crime procedural television shows, true crime podcasts) contributes to the public’s perception of the criminal justice field. Little research exists on the “CSI Effect,” the phenomenon in which criminal justice majors are drawn to the field based on the glorified depictions of the profession portrayed in the media. Previous research on influences behind choice of major suggest a variety of other influential factors, such as personal interest in the subject, friends or family members, or personality characteristics (Beggs et al., 2008; Hoag et al., 2017; Porter & Umbach, 2006). The current …
