Metabolomics Driven Discovery Of Bioactive Natural Products Leads From Marine And Terrestrial Sources For The Development Of Analgesics, Sahar Mofidi Tabatabaei

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Natural products remain a rich source of structurally diverse bioactive compounds for drug discovery, particularly for pain therapeutics. However, the chemical complexity of natural product extracts presents significant challenges for the efficient identification and prioritization of bioactive metabolites. This dissertation integrates untargeted LC-MS/MS-based metabolomics, molecular networking, classical natural products chemistry, and neurobiological assays to accelerate the discovery of analgesic lead compounds targeting the emerging pain-associated receptor σ₂R/TMEM97.

An untargeted metabolomics workflow was developed to systematically profile complex biological extracts and guide bioactive compound isolation. High-resolution LC-MS/MS data were analyzed using molecular networking (GNPS/GNPS2) to visualize chemical space, dereplicate known metabolites, …

From Financial Education To Financial Decisions: Evidence On College Financing, Personal Finance Behavior, And Student Attitudes, Dongwei Shi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

I examine how financial education shapes students’ financial knowledge, college financing decisions, and longer-term financial behavior.

The first chapter studies whether taking high school financial education in Kentucky affects students’ college financing decisions using linked administrative records on high school course-taking and postsecondary financial aid. Using school-level financial education course availability as an instrument, the chapter evaluates whether exposure to financial education is associated with differences in student loan borrowing and receipt of need-based aid.

The second chapter examines whether exposure to state high school financial education mandates improves financial literacy and longer-term personal finance behavior among U.S. adults. Using …

Examining Marginalized Sexual Identity Development Through Perry’S Scheme Of Cognitive Development, Miranda Bejda Jan 2026

Examining Marginalized Sexual Identity Development Through Perry’S Scheme Of Cognitive Development, Miranda Bejda

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Existing models of LGBTQ+ sexual identity development are critiqued for their linearity and lack of inclusion for diverse experiences and sexual identities. There is a call for a more robust understanding of the cognitive aspect of sexual identity development. The purpose of this dissertation is to further the understanding of how people think about their sexual identity through the developmental process using Perry’s scheme of cognitive development as a framework. Through semi-structured interviews, I analyze the LGBTQ+ sexual identity development process (Stage 1), how Perry’s scheme applies to LGBTQ+ sexual identity development (Stage 2), and propose a Perry-informed model of …

A Performer's Guide To Selected Trumpet Excerpts Of Orchestral Works By Women Composers, Julia Stowell Jan 2026

A Performer's Guide To Selected Trumpet Excerpts Of Orchestral Works By Women Composers, Julia Stowell

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Orchestral excerpts are brief passages from symphonic repertoire that are intended to demonstrate a player’s musical and technical abilities. The canon of orchestral trumpet audition excerpts has been relatively unchanged for several generations. This established canon of excerpts rarely features works written by women. As orchestras begin diversifying their programs, the frequently requested orchestral excerpts require new considerations to reflect these changes. In order for excerpts to be reflective of the orchestral canon, they must be updated as the canon changes.

Once an excerpt has been identified and obtained, the next issue is addressing its unique musical and technical challenges. …

Engineering Plga Nanoparticle Size To Modulate Immune Responses After Spinal Cord Injury, Daniel J. Kolpek Jan 2026

Engineering Plga Nanoparticle Size To Modulate Immune Responses After Spinal Cord Injury, Daniel J. Kolpek

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Spinal cord injury is a severe and debilitating condition that often results in lifelong complications, including paralysis. Many of these chronic outcomes are driven by a sustained inflammatory response at the injury site, which limits tissue regeneration and functional recovery. As a result, therapeutic strategies that modulate this immune response have gained significant interest. Polymer based nanoparticle therapies have emerged as a promising approach due to their ability to interact with and influence immune cell behavior. Importantly, the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles can be precisely tuned to optimize these effects. Among these properties, size has been shown to influence key …

Promptable Segmentation For Adaptive And Data-Efficient Medical Image Analysis, Tyler Ward Jan 2026

Promptable Segmentation For Adaptive And Data-Efficient Medical Image Analysis, Tyler Ward

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Image segmentation is a fundamental task in computer vision. While segmentation models have traditionally been trained in a fully-supervised manner, recent approaches have leveraged large-scale pre-training and prompting mechanisms to great effect. However, the performance of such approaches often degrades when applied to domain-specific tasks like medical image analysis. A major reason for this lies is that these models are trained on large, labeled datasets of natural images, which have drastically different characteristics compared to medical images, limiting the generalizability of the methods when applied to medical data. This dissertation presents several data-efficient, adaptive, and promptable medical image segmentation models. …

Phonics And Friends: A Critical Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Popular Teacher Influencers' Content, Zachary T. Milford

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This critical multimodal discourse analysis examined how five teacher-influencers aligned with the Science of Reading (SoR) movement performed authority, constructed discourses, and used affective and semiotic resources in viral TikTok videos about reading instruction. Drawing on Kress and van Leeuwen's (2001) multimodal social semiotics, Fairclough's (1992) critical discourse analysis, Foucault's (1977, 1982) theorizations of power, Papacharissi's (2014) theory of affective publics, Ong's (1982) secondary orality, and Taussig's (1993) mimesis and alterity, this interpretive, qualitative, multiple-case study analyzed fifty viral TikTok videos and four semi-structured interviews with teacher-influencers. Data were analyzed through within-case and within-mode coding, cross-modal analysis, and cross-case analysis …

Regulating Galaxy Growth: Ionized Gas Conditions, Star Formation Histories, And Environmental Effects, Shweta Jain Jan 2026

Regulating Galaxy Growth: Ionized Gas Conditions, Star Formation Histories, And Environmental Effects, Shweta Jain

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Understanding galaxy formation and evolution requires tracing how baryons cycle between stars, gas, and the interstellar medium (ISM) across cosmic time. The efficiency of star formation, the buildup of metals, and the regulation of gas inflows and outflows are governed by evolving physical conditions within galaxies and their environments. My thesis investigates how the ionized ISM, star formation histories, and environmental processes have shaped galaxy evolution over the past ∼ 12 Gyr. The primary focus of this work is the evolution of the physical conditions of ionized gas in galaxies, including gas-phase metallicity and ionization state. Using new and archival …

Technology-Facilitated Violence And Abuse: Portrayals And Perceptions, Christina S. Walker Jan 2026

Technology-Facilitated Violence And Abuse: Portrayals And Perceptions, Christina S. Walker

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In the past, intimate partner violence (IPV) was primarily perpetrated in person. However, due to new mediated communication technologies and capabilities like social media and artificial intelligence (AI), perpetrators can use this technology for various purposes including subjecting others to violence, harassment, and abuse. Such violence can be a form of IPV and is referred to as technology-facilitated violence and abuse (TFVA). TFVA is becoming increasingly prevalent and is encountered by a staggering percent of women. Furthermore, unlike traditional forms of IPV, even men are subjected to TFVA at increasing and disproportionate rates, particularly male teens.

In the current state …

A Nonlocal Lattice Particle Method For Modeling Hcp Polycrystalline Solids, Di Liu Jan 2026

A Nonlocal Lattice Particle Method For Modeling Hcp Polycrystalline Solids, Di Liu

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Polycrystalline materials, composed of individual grains with varying grain size, shape, and crystallographic orientation are widely used in various engineering and industrial applications. Conventional applications of polycrystalline materials rely on the macroscopic performance, and the microstructural features are usually homogenized out. With the advancement of modern technologies and improvement of characterization methods, polycrystalline materials find their applications in meso- and micro-scale systems. At these length scales, the microscopic features including grain boundary characteristics significantly affect the material physical responses. As a result, the conventional continuum mechanics models become problematic, especially for material failure problems where the microstructural features play dominant …

Multiscale Modeling Of The Thermomechanical Behavior Of Polymeric And Molecular Organic Semiconductors, Kehinde H. Fagbohungbe

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Organic semiconductors, derived from π-conjugated polymers and molecules, enable the development of deformable, stretchable and flexible electronics due to their tunable redox, optical, electronic and mechanical properties. However, an informed understanding of how multi-scale morphological characteristics of the polymeric and molecular semiconductors influence bulk properties that contribute to electronic and optical performance, especially under operational thermal and mechanical stresses, remains incomplete. This lack of understanding poses a challenge to scalability and commercialization of organic electronics. This dissertation develops and deploys computational modeling approaches, particularly atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, to investigate the multiscale morphological behavior of these synthetic semiconducting materials …

Ayer Y Hoy De España En Guinea Ecuatorial. Construcción De La Colonia Africana Y Sus Consecuencias En La Actualidad A Través De Las Voces Femeninas En La Literatura En Español, Jesús Ponte Bernal Jan 2026

Ayer Y Hoy De España En Guinea Ecuatorial. Construcción De La Colonia Africana Y Sus Consecuencias En La Actualidad A Través De Las Voces Femeninas En La Literatura En Español, Jesús Ponte Bernal

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Equatorial Guinea was a Spanish colony until 1968. Despite this, it has never received much attention from the Iberian Peninsula, so its literature and history remain unknown to much of the Spanish-speaking population. This has been due to historical factors, such as the Franco dictatorship, which classified everything related to the African colony as confidential, but also due to the racial exclusion experienced by the Black population throughout history. Generally, only some Equatorial Guinean male authors have managed to carve out a place for themselves in the cultural canon.

This study analyzes eight books whose plots take place in Equatorial …

Personality Exceptions: Enhancing Character In Narrative Planners With Internal Memory, Elinor Rubin-Mcgregor Jan 2026

Personality Exceptions: Enhancing Character In Narrative Planners With Internal Memory, Elinor Rubin-Mcgregor

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Stories and narratives are powerful tools for forging connections between people, as they induce emotions shared through their audience and help build empathy and understanding through sharing unique perspectives. Interactive stories can do all this and more, as they can be used to better educate and engage their audience. But in such stories, the characters must have consistent personality and human-like emotions in order for the audience to relate to them. Current implementations of personality in interactive narratives either portrays characters with static personality that feel less realistic, or else require a great deal of additional work from the author …

Non-Invasive Digital Restoration Of Damaged Photographic Film Negatives, Ankan Bhattacharyya Jan 2026

Non-Invasive Digital Restoration Of Damaged Photographic Film Negatives, Ankan Bhattacharyya

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Physical restoration of damaged photographic film causes more damage. Also, existing non-invasive digital restoration of film negatives does not produce print-quality optical images. Instead, they produce X-ray projections, which are not the same as optical projections. This thesis addresses these problems and establishes a framework that can digitally restore old, damaged films without the need to open them physically. Virtual Unwrapping is an existing pipeline that has proven itself over the last couple of decades to work on unopenable papyrus scrolls, like the Herculaneum Scrolls. This thesis utilizes the concept of virtual unwrapping to restore damaged photographic film negatives. Due …

An Ethical Analysis Of International Graduate Student Workers' (Igsws) Employment Vulnerability, Adeola F. Oladeji Jan 2026

An Ethical Analysis Of International Graduate Student Workers' (Igsws) Employment Vulnerability, Adeola F. Oladeji

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

International graduate student workers (IGSWs) occupy a distinctive position within U.S. higher education as students, employees, and temporary visa holders. Their academic progress, financial support, and legal authorization to remain in the United States are often closely intertwined, creating dependencies that heighten their vulnerability to exploitation, unequal treatment, and institutional power imbalances. Although previous scholarship has documented these challenges from empirical, legal, and policy perspectives, comparatively little attention has been given to universities' ethical responsibilities toward IGSWs.

This dissertation examines how U.S. higher education institutions should fulfill their ethical responsibilities to international graduate student workers. Grounded in Dewey's pattern of …

The Quantifiable Effects Of Constitutional Interpretation, Carter Ridgway Jan 2026

The Quantifiable Effects Of Constitutional Interpretation, Carter Ridgway

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The Constitution of the United States is a document that has been for centuries the focus of academic inquiry and scrutiny from a range of differing methodological approaches. Among these factions vying for supremacy in the realm of constitutional interpretation have risen to predominant methodologies. On one side lies the originalist method which is formed around the core principle that the best way to protect the constitution and the rights granted therein is to interpret from the perspectives and values of those who constructed it. Alternatively, those who prefer the doctrine of living constitutionalism, sometimes referred to as constitutional realism, …

Coexistence Between Ci And Feminization Inducing Symbionts: A Theoretical Perspective, Dylan Thorp Jan 2026

Coexistence Between Ci And Feminization Inducing Symbionts: A Theoretical Perspective, Dylan Thorp

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Endosymbiotic bacteria that manipulate the reproduction of their host are abundant in arthropods. Theoretical efforts to model these bacteria have seldom included symbionts that feminize their hosts, and those that do have assumed an environmental sex determination system. Here, I expand upon other theoretical works to model the dynamics of a host population with an XX/X0 sex determination system that contains separate CI and feminization inducing symbionts. I found that coexistence cannot occur without double infection, consistent with previous models. However, I also found that without double infection, the presence of the feminizing symbiont can facilitate the spread of the …

Aba Renewal Of Fentanyl Seeking Using A Drug-Prime And Peer Stimulus In Rats, Meagan Blanchard Jan 2026

Aba Renewal Of Fentanyl Seeking Using A Drug-Prime And Peer Stimulus In Rats, Meagan Blanchard

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

People with opioid use disorder can experience craving and relapse to use when exposed to cues that were previously paired with the drug-taking environment. These cues can be both social and non-social in nature. This study aimed to explore the effect of a peer cue and a drug-prime cue, both together and separately. First, rats were trained to self-administer fentanyl in Context A (peer and drug present). Then, rats extinguished this behavior in Context B (no peer and no drug present) while self-administering saline instead of fentanyl. Lastly, rats underwent 4 different renewal test conditions (control, peer only, drug only, …

The Nature And Origin Of The Strodes Creek Member Of The Lexington Limestone, Central Kentucky, Claire J. Mendenhall Jan 2026

The Nature And Origin Of The Strodes Creek Member Of The Lexington Limestone, Central Kentucky, Claire J. Mendenhall

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The Strodes Creek Member of the Lexington Limestone is a small, unusual member that is largely known for its beds of fragmented and overturned stromatoporoids. The Strodes Creek Member occurs as two distinct stratigraphic bodies, wholly encompassed by the Millersburg Member, which represents a shallow, open-marine, mixed-clastic-carbonate platform, characterized by thin-bedded to nodular, fossiliferous calcarenites and calcirudites interbedded with shale. In contrast to the Millersburg, the Strodes Creek exhibits a lithologic background of dark, organic-rich, calcareous shales with a westward-thickening section of very irregularly bedded, stromatoporoid-rich, fossiliferous calcisiltites (packstones and wackestones). The calcisiltites are commonly associated with hummocky crossbedding, pinch-and-swell …

Nail Salon Appointment Management System., Alexander Tran Jan 2026

Nail Salon Appointment Management System., Alexander Tran

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

I will create an appointment management system for my family's nail salon. This will contain a database and tables that keep track of data of the employees, customers, and the receptionist to make it easier to book appointments for the nail salon. This was originally made to create an appointment system because I have family members who don't understand technology well and wanted to make something simple and intuitive for anyone to use, since the appointment system that we currently use is extremely off the cuff, and this should remedy that.

The Ability To Resist The Expected Impairing Effects Of Alcohol In Heavy And Light Drinkers, Grace Tomaszewski Jan 2026

The Ability To Resist The Expected Impairing Effects Of Alcohol In Heavy And Light Drinkers, Grace Tomaszewski

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Alcohol tolerance is defined as a diminished response to the drug owing to repeated alcohol exposures. However, drinkers can compensate for alcohol impairment, particularly when they expect to be impaired in the situation. However, the ability to compensate might depend on the behavior impaired by alcohol and the general tolerance already acquired by the drinker. This study tested the degree to which expecting alcohol impairment would reduce alcohol’s impairing effect on reaction time (RT) and fine motor control in those with heavy and light drinking histories. Light drinkers (n=26) and heavy drinkers (n=28) received a 0.65 g/kg alcohol and performed …

Tenney, Dakota Smallridge, Gillian Barach, Gurveer Singh, Erin Beskitt, Justine Busby, Syllissa Duncan, Alexa Wawrzyniak, Brenda Vega, Nick Tokar, Andrew Ohl, Jesse Young, Jeffrey Mellott

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The inferior colliculus is a nucleus in the auditory midbrain that plays an important role in sound and speech processing through how it encodes temporal precision. Temporal precision depends on the balance of inhibition and excitation within the IC. This balance degrades during aging. Age-related changes in synapses have been described in the lemniscal IC as a contributing factor for this imbalance. However, it is unknown if aging affects synapses throughout the non-lemniscal IC in a similar manner. We sought to determine this by examining the dorsal cortex of the IC. The ICd is a non-lemniscal nucleus that is well …
