The “Green Persuasion Effect” Of Negative Messages: How And When Message Framing Influences Tourists’ Environmentally Responsible Behavior, Xuehuan He, Chengzhi Ye, Songshan Huang, Lujun Su
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Tourist activities may harm the environment, making tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior particularly important in tourism research. This research investigates the persuasion effect of message framing in environmental protection reminders on environmentally responsible behavior. Through five studies employing both field and controlled experiments and different measures of environmentally responsible behavior across varied tourism scenarios, we demonstrate that negatively (vs. positively) framed messages more effectively increase environmentally responsible behavior. Specifically, negatively framed messages are more effective in enhancing tourists’ environmental awareness, which triggers more environmentally responsible behavior. Furthermore, we identify social class as a moderator of message framing effectiveness, showing that negatively …

Curriculum Approaches To Strengthening Student Employability And Improving Graduate Outcomes In The Stm Disciplines, Denise Jackson, Michael D. O’Connor
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In Australia and elsewhere, curriculum improvements are needed to improve the development of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) graduates for future work and careers. Several studies document significant STM student attrition, poor graduate preparedness for work, relatively weak employment rates post-graduation, and mismatched expectations of graduate capabilities by employers. The inclusion of work-integrated learning (WIL) activities within curricula can better prepare students for relevant employment by bridging discipline-specific teaching with work practices. Traditionally, access to WIL has been limited for STM Bachelor students and a better understanding of WIL’s benefits and impact is needed to refine and extend STM WIL …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
To achieve supply chain decarbonization, environmentally conscious manufacturers are transforming their energy infrastructure. While certain manufacturers are adopting a pure bioenergy strategy in their production processes, others are opting for a hybrid energy approach that combines traditional energy with bioenergy. This choice is often influenced by limitations in land capacity and the developmental stage of biomass conversion technologies. This paper introduces a game-theoretic model that explores the optimal approach to achieving supply chain decarbonization by strategically selecting energy portfolios. Our findings reveal that in scenarios where the market size is small, manufacturers tend to adopt a hybrid energy strategy, particularly …

Situating Australian Youth Work Within The Professions, John Sutcliffe
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Youth work in Australia has moved towards greater professionalisation marked by the establishment and strengthening of state and national associations. This evolution is crucial for the development of youth work, although it has not been without its complexities. Historically, debates over the professionalisation of the field have been contested. Proponents have emphasised benefits including standardisation and increased accountability, while critics have expressed concern that bureaucratic processes could undermine the relational, practitioner-led core of youth work. This article moves beyond the ‘should we’ debate to focus on how youth work’s professional identity is evolving and how it fits within the broader …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose – Cryptocurrency exchanges operate in a hyper-volatile, “wild west” environment, fundamentally challenging existing theories of FinTech success that were built for stable markets. The literature lacks a framework to explain how firms thrive amidst such extreme regulatory ambiguity and institutional distrust. This study resolves this theoretical puzzle by developing a new principle for success in nascent, high-stakes digital ecosystems. Design/methodology/approach – We conduct a multiple-case study of 14 leading cryptocurrency exchanges. Using the belief–action–outcome (BAO) logic as an analytical guide, we deconstruct the strategic actions that separate successful exchanges from failures, synthesising them into a new, empirically grounded framework. …

Horrible, Fantastic, Traumatic: Victim-Survivors’ Experiences Of Police Interviews In Sexual Offence Cases And Suggestions Moving Forward, Gemma Hamilton, Giselle Woodley
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study explored adult victim-survivors’ experiences of reporting sexual violence to police in Australia, focusing on their suggestions for supporting future victim-survivors. By drawing on feminist standpoint theory, qualitative interviews with 26 victim-survivors indicated a range of experiences, yet strikingly similar concerns and suggestions for improvement. Using reflexive thematic analysis, key themes included the importance of interview room settings; the interviewer's interpersonal care; the presence of support people; and further investigative support when victims felt like investigators. The study offers both short-term and longer-term suggestions for supporting victim-survivors in sexual offence investigations, with a focus on minimising secondary victimisation.

The introduction of small-molecule redox mediators into aqueous co-reactant electrochemiluminescence (ECL) systems has emerged as an effective strategy to increase signal intensity. Herein, we investigate the influence of a series of neutral iridium(iii) complexes (Ir(pmi)3, Ir(ppy)3, Ir(ppz)3 and Ir(ppy)2(acac)) as redox mediators for co-reactant ECL in acetonitrile. Using [Ru(bpy)3]2+ as a benchmark luminophore and tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) as a co-reactant, the redox mediators elicit similar effects in this solvent to those of their sulfonated [Ir(sppy)3]3− and [Ir(sppz)3]3− analogues under aqueous conditions. The Ir(ppz)3 complex was most effective; at a concentration of 100 µM it produced an 11-fold increase …

Thorium Lung Burdens Of Norm Workers Revisited, Gregory S. Hewson, Martin I. Ralph, Marcus Cattani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Historical thorium bioassay data collected from Australian mine workers in the 1990s, including in vivo lung counting and thoron-in-breath (TIB) measurements, were re-evaluated using current dosimetric and biokinetic models. Revised daily thorium intakes from bioassay were compared with previous estimates to assess changes in the dose profile and potential implications for contemporary operations. Reanalysis revealed lower estimates of annual dose, including the number of workers assessed as exceeding 20 mSv. However, it was found that intakes derived from industry personal air sampling (PAS) underestimated intake by up to three-fold. This study determined that sensitive bioassay techniques, such as TIB using …

A structured survey of nonelectric vehicle owners was administered in Perth (n = 442; conventional petrol n = 408; hybrid n = 34). Protocol-based cleaning and distributional diagnostics guided nonparametric inference and segmentation. Refuelling frequency comparisons between conventional and hybrid vehicle owners indicated higher visit frequency and monthly consumption among the former (monthly consumption: median 150 L vs. 92 L; U = 6963.5, z = 4.48, p < 0.001), whereas within conventional vehicle owners, no significant association was observed between monthly consumption and stated willingness to adopt an electric vehicle (U = 6633.0, p = 0.671). Expected petrol price discounts were tightly centred (median 10%; interquartile range 5%–15%), yet cluster analysis revealed a distinct segment combining high discount expectations (≈22%) and higher monthly consumption (∼211 L). Correlation between consumption and discount expectations was negligible (r ≈ 0.03, p > 0.05). These findings suggest that adoption-related …

Australia’s cultural and linguistic diversity highlights a pressing need for teacher education programs to prepare educators who can effectively support plurilingual learners. At the same time, existing programs often fall short in building the pedagogic and linguistic knowledge required to counter dominant English-only norms. This study draws on the framework of culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies (CLSP) to explicitly centre plurilingual practices. CLSP is particularly relevant in the Australian context, where English-centric policies continue to marginalise First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) knowledges and perspectives and plurilingual ways of knowing and being. We present findings from a national study …

Adolescent social adversity (discrimination, bullying) enhances paranoia—the perception others want to harm or upset you. In this preregistered study (AsPredicted No. 154322), we tested the impact of prior social adversity and current social exclusion on paranoia, self/other beliefs, and latent social-learning processes in UK mid-adolescents (15-17 years, N = 502). In an experimental design, participants completed baseline social-adversity measures before random allocation to a social inclusion/exclusion manipulation (Cyberball), after which the Intentions Game assessed cognitive flexibility. We tested (a) whether adversity and exclusion interact to increase paranoia (b) via (mediated) negative self/other beliefs and (c) if this was moderated by …

The Associations Between Sleep Environment Factors And Sleep Health In Individuals Living With Neurological Conditions, Mitchell Turner, Laws, Madeline Griffiths, Travis Cruickshank
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Objectives: To explore associations between air temperature and light in the sleeping environment and sleep health in individuals with neurological conditions. Methods: The sleep health of 46 individuals with neurological conditions (mean age 51.37 ± 14.24 years; 20 males, 26 females) was measured using the Sleep Health Index (SHI). Air temperature and light data were captured across seven days using a light/temperature data logger positioned next to the participant’s bed. Data recorded during the participants’ sleeping periods (determined using a sleep diary) were analyzed. Linear regression models were used to assess the associations between air temperature and light and sleep …
The Factors Influencing Organisational Responsiveness For Sustainable Projects, Richard Hughes, Bradley Baker
The Factors Influencing Organisational Responsiveness For Sustainable Projects, Richard Hughes, Bradley Baker
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: This study investigates how organisations respond to sustainability when it becomes a central strategic priority, particularly through project environments. The research seeks to understand the factors influencing organisational responsiveness to sustainability imperatives in projects, addressing a key gap in sustainable project management literature. Design/methodology/approach: The study employed a thematic meta-synthesis of qualitative case studies from multiple countries and different economic sectors. Using grounded theory, data were coded to identify first-order concepts, second-order themes and aggregate dimensions, culminating in the development of a conceptual model of dynamic adaptation. Findings: The analysis revealed three interrelated dimensions that shape organisational responsiveness: strategic …
