A Service Ecosystems Approach For Sustainable Volunteer Engagement: Developing Insights From Covid-19 Disruptions, Ingrid O'Brien, Fazlul K. Rabbanee, Eunjung Kim, Megan Paull, Kirsten Holmes, Jo Anne Kestel Jan 2026

A Service Ecosystems Approach For Sustainable Volunteer Engagement: Developing Insights From Covid-19 Disruptions, Ingrid O'Brien, Fazlul K. Rabbanee, Eunjung Kim, Megan Paull, Kirsten Holmes, Jo Anne Kestel

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The purpose of this paper is to develop foundational propositions designed to reflect success factors in the recruitment and retention of volunteers for future longevity. Using insights gathered from three universities' experiences of student volunteering during COVID-19, plus capturing the experiences of volunteer involving organizations, we draw on existing theories, as well as service ecosystem literature, to identify critical emerging trends. We argue that conceptualizing volunteer pathways as a set of linear, sequential stages linked to a single volunteering experience does not adequately capture the complexity of the volunteer ecosystem, including the dynamic inter-relationships among actors and the multiple roles …

A Universal Hybrid Model-Free Deep Quantum–Transfer Learning Controller Enhanced By Grey Wolf Optimization For Dc–Dc Boost Converters With Hardware-In-Loop Validation, Seyyed Morteza Ghamari, Asma Aziz Jan 2026

A Universal Hybrid Model-Free Deep Quantum–Transfer Learning Controller Enhanced By Grey Wolf Optimization For Dc–Dc Boost Converters With Hardware-In-Loop Validation, Seyyed Morteza Ghamari, Asma Aziz

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This paper proposes a universal hybrid model-free quantum–transfer learning controller with enhanced online grey wolf optimization algorithm (GWO–QTL) for DC–DC boost converter. This system has the characteristics of non-minimum phase behavior, parasitic effects, and fractional-order dynamics because of high frequency operation. These characteristics make analytical modeling complicated and make it difficult to have a single traditional controller that will operate reliably over different converter types. This motivates the creation of a unified model-free control framework that is able to learn directly from the behavior of the converter without relying on the topology specific models. Reinforcement learning, where an agent interacts …

Challenging The Monopoly Giant: Market Challenger Premium As Competitive Advantages, Cheuk Hang Au, Chih Yuan Chou Jan 2026

Challenging The Monopoly Giant: Market Challenger Premium As Competitive Advantages, Cheuk Hang Au, Chih Yuan Chou

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Market challengers frequently disrupt established incumbents with innovative ideas or novel business models. Yet, they frequently face high entry barriers and the entrenched power of incumbents. Even when challengers provide products or services better aligned with the market, competing effectively can remain difficult, particularly in monopoly-dominated sectors. This paper presents a case study of ViuTV entering Hong Kong’s monopoly-led free-to-air TV market. We identify IFH (innovation, freshness, hope) strategies for challengers to gain competitive advantage, leading to the emergence of a “market challenger premium” as a unique competitive edge. We also examine the role of customer cognitive biases and the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The Policy Process Case Method (PPCM) is a recent innovation for (health and physical) education professionals to transform their complex policy experiences into practical insights. This method engages professionals across roles and geographical borders in sustained reflexive dialogue to collaboratively interrogate their policy experiences through policy theories. In this ∼1.5-year PPCM investigation, our group (i.e. two curriculum officers, one department head, and one researcher, from four nations) engaged in the following process. First, each practitioner shared a policy experience, including advocating for school policy change, developing provincial/state curricula, and implementing provincial/state curricula. The researcher identified relevant policy theories through which …

Crustose Coralline Algae, Algal Turfs, And Coral Reef Calcification, Sterling B. Tebbett, Scott D. Ling, David R. Bellwood, James Gahan, Alexandre C. Siqueira, Kyle Morgan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) play a central role in coral reef framework consolidation and vertical accretion, yet their contribution to reef-scale calcification remains poorly quantified, particularly on reefs dominated by algal turfs. We examined how CCA calcification rates differed across ten reef sites with varying benthic composition around Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Using tiles from calcification accretion units (CAUs), we quantified CCA carbonate production on light-exposed tile surfaces and related these rates to CCA cover and the Epilithic Algal Ratio (i.e. the spectrum of algal states from CCA to turf dominance), quantified on both tiles and the adjacent …

Customer Participation In Service Recovery: Accounting For The Role Of Customers’ Perceived Control And Empowerment In Hotel Services, Aron O'Cass, Shahin Sharifi, Vida Siahtiri, Atefeh Saniee

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Customer participation in service recovery is common, yet little is known about how different participation roles shape recovery evaluations. This gap is especially salient in hotels, where recovery often unfolds under time pressure and heightened emotions. We conceptualize participatory service recovery as involving two distinct customer roles: solution identification and solution implementation. Across three studies, we examine how these roles shape recovery satisfaction and whether perceived control and psychological empowerment help shape these effects. Study 1 uses the critical incident technique to identify role-specific participation behaviours and customers' interpretations of their recovery involvement. Studies 2 and 3 use scenario-based experiments …

Decoupling Sustainability And Performance: How Government Infrastructure Projects In Australia Fare On Strategic Environmental Commitments, Richard Hughes, Kerry Brown Jan 2026

Decoupling Sustainability And Performance: How Government Infrastructure Projects In Australia Fare On Strategic Environmental Commitments, Richard Hughes, Kerry Brown

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Australian government organisations are pivotal in helping to meet the United Nations sustainable development goals. Yet while these organisations promote sustainability in their strategic plans, they struggle to embed these same commitments into their own infrastructure and construction projects. This study examines this persistent disconnect using the lens of strategic decoupling, which explains how organisations symbolically align with external expectations while internal practices remain unchanged. Using a two-stage qualitative design, we conducted a positivist discourse analysis of strategic artefacts from six government organisations and a theoretically informed interpretivist analysis of 30 interviews with project professionals, framed by strong structuration theory. …

Crisis, Credit Risk, And Productivity: Lessons From The Vietnamese Banking Sector During Covid-19, Van Nguyen, Phuong Thanh Le, Reza Kiani Mavi, Amir Arjomandi

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study investigates how an unprecedented systemic shock, the COVID-19 pandemic, reshaped bank productivity and intermediation efficiency in Vietnam, one of the fastest-growing emerging economies. We develop a novel risk-adjusted total factor productivity (TFP) measure based on the by-production Luenberger–Hicks–Moorsteen (LHM) indicator, which incorporates non-performing loans as undesirable outputs to better capture credit-risk dynamics. Using a balanced panel covering both the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods (2016–2022), our results show that Vietnamese banks experienced a general decline in productivity before and during COVID-19, driven largely by reductions in technical and scale efficiency. However, foreign and state-owned banks recorded stronger technological progress …

Human Resource Development Practices And Employee-Focused Voice: A Conceptual Model And Research Agenda, Hossein Ali Abadi, Andreas Wallo, Daniel Lundqvist, Alan Coetzer, Janice Redmond Jan 2026

Human Resource Development Practices And Employee-Focused Voice: A Conceptual Model And Research Agenda, Hossein Ali Abadi, Andreas Wallo, Daniel Lundqvist, Alan Coetzer, Janice Redmond

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Critical theorists contend HRD has prioritized managerial interests over employee well-being. Some have advocated an ethics of care approach, emphasizing employee needs and well-being. However, there are few models to guide research on integrating care-oriented practices. We adopt a mutual gains perspective, proposing that HRD practices can enhance performance and employee well-being through employee-focused voice. HRD has overlooked voice, which is well-theorized in HRM. To address this gap, we conceptualize how key practices can foster employee-focused voice. We adapt and extend Nishii and Wright’s (2008) HR process model, integrate leadership styles, and develop propositions to guide studies on facilitating voice.

Information-Processing Gap And Insider Trading Profitability: Evidence From The Xbrl Mandate, Yuyun Huang, Jerry T. Parwada, Yuan George Shan, Joey W. Yang Jan 2026

Information-Processing Gap And Insider Trading Profitability: Evidence From The Xbrl Mandate, Yuyun Huang, Jerry T. Parwada, Yuan George Shan, Joey W. Yang

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The information processing costs faced by external investors may provide corporate insiders with a comparative advantage. We examine how the phased introduction of the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) mandate, designed to lower investors' costs of processing public disclosures, affects insiders’ trading profitability. We find that opportunistic insider sales, but not purchases, become significantly less profitable following the first wave of mandatory XBRL adoption. This decline is consistent with a reduced number of insider sales preceding 10-K filings that convey unfavorable news, as well as with a general fall in insider trading activity and profitability across all three mandate waves. …
