Novel Nano-Formulations Based On Flash Nanoprecipitation For Ocular Drug Delivery, Lin Qi Jan 2025

Novel Nano-Formulations Based On Flash Nanoprecipitation For Ocular Drug Delivery, Lin Qi

Doctoral Dissertations

Effective ocular drug delivery has always been a challenge for clinical and research. Although many nanotechnology-based formulations have been developed and showed great potential in ocular drug delivery, this is far from enough to meet clinical requirements. These studies aimed at the design and synthesis of novel nanoparticles using multi-inlet vortex mixer (MIVM) to improve ocular drug delivery efficiency. The first project involves packaging two different anti-glaucoma drugs, brimonidine (BM) and betaxolol (BX), into solid drug nanoparticles (SDNs) by MIVM, which can achieve both functions, reducing aqueous humor production and promoting aqueous humor efflux. The studies demonstrate that the SDNs …

Topics On Ai Fairness Preferences In Kidney Transplantation, Mukund Telukunta

Doctoral Dissertations

Modern kidney transplantation incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) decision-support systems which exhibit social discrimination due to biases inherited from training data. Although researchers have proposed various group-based fairness notions to assess biases in AI, it remains uncertain which criterion is most suitable for evaluating biases in such complex healthcare systems. This dissertation explores human perception of fairness to identify the most appropriate fairness criterion for assessing AI tools in kidney transplantation, focusing on the preferences of non-expert (e.g. public, patients) stakeholders. The study examines two distinct AI systems employed in kidney transplantation: a classification model and a regression model. Human subject …

Design And Synthesis Of Organocatalyts For Efficient Decontamination Of Organophosphate-Based Nerve Agents And Pesticides, Emmanuel Kingsley Darkwah Jan 2025

Design And Synthesis Of Organocatalyts For Efficient Decontamination Of Organophosphate-Based Nerve Agents And Pesticides, Emmanuel Kingsley Darkwah

Doctoral Dissertations

Exposure to organophosphate-based nerve agents and pesticides poses significant health and security threats to civilians, soldiers, and first responders. Despite extensive efforts to develop chemical detoxification agents for use in topical applications on exposed skin surfaces and for intravenous injections, there remains an unmet need for effective, non-hazardous decontaminating agents. The current state-of-the-art decontaminating agent, Dekon-139 (2,3-butanedione oxime, potassium salt), exhibits adverse effects when applied to the skin.

In this study, we designed and synthesized pharmaceutically relevant aminoguanidine-derived aldimines that are relatively non-toxic and substantially more effective at decontaminating nerve agents and pesticides compared to existing agents, and they act …

Transient Lives: Trans & Non-Binary People’S Encounters With The Harms Of Work, Siggi Auerbach

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This ethnographic criminological research aimed to address several theoretical gaps in the existing literature surrounding trans people, vulnerability, and victimisation. The overarching objective of this study was to offer a revised account of the harms trans people encounter in relation to their work via a new theoretical framework which is informed by ultra-realist criminology, critical hate studies. The theoretical framework was informed by contemporary criminologies of the harms of work, as opposed to the harms the institution of work is argued to inflict upon intersectional aspects of the individual’s social identity. This thesis aimed to reconceptualise the harms trans workers …

Reducing Marine Plastic Pollution: Critical Assessment Of The Potential To Develop A Civil Liability And Compensation Mechanism Under The Law Of The Sea Convention, Alexandra Leaton

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

Plastic pollution has had a detrimental global impact, particularly in the marine environment, due to its mobility, longevity, and tendency to be difficult to retrieve. The situation has worsened because of the increased production and consumption of plastics and the fact that pollution occurs throughout the entirety of plastics’ production and lifecycle. Its pathways/vectors to the marine environment are diffuse and complex. The combined environmental, social, and potential health impacts of plastics have resulted in the development of over 40 international legal and other regulatory mechanisms, although inconsistent implementation has resulted in a fragmented framework with gaps and overlaps. The …

Can You Hear The Music? Reexamining The Gender Gap In Physics, Camille Johnson Jan 2025

Can You Hear The Music? Reexamining The Gender Gap In Physics, Camille Johnson

Dean James E. McLeod Freshman Writing Prize

Examining the gender gap in physics through looking at physics’ reliance on “physical intuition” and how it impacts women in physics. Among STEM disciplines, physics stands out for its persistent and striking gender imbalance. While gender disparities exist across all science fields, physics consistently reports some of the lowest levels of female participation. According to a 2017-2021 study by the American Physical Society, only 23% of bachelor’s degrees were awarded to women, in stark contrast to 42% in math, 52% in chemistry, and 64% in biological sciences. This sharp divide highlights how physics remains uniquely gendered, even within the broader …

Herbal and marine products in the form of extracts, infusions, and decoctions have been used for centuries in folk and traditional medicine. Preparations typically contain multiple biologically active compounds. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that about 65% of consumers worldwide use natural remedies containing bioactive molecules to treat various diseases [1]. Most single-molecule drugs of natural origin were developed in the middle of the 20th century through the active screening of natural products for bioactive molecules [2]. Examples include artemisinin, cyclosporine, taxol, doxorubicin, and many others. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, we saw a decline in …

Highest Risk Density Region For The Communication Of The Impact Of A Treatment Covariate On The Time-To-Event Distribution, Giacomo Biganzoli, Giuseppe Marano Phd, Patrizia Boracchi Phd

COBRA Preprint Series

Analysis of time-to-event (TTE) data is central to clinical research, yet conventional summary measures like the hazard ratio (HR) and restricted mean survival time (RMST) present significant challenges. The HR is often misinterpreted, and its validity depends on the frequently violated proportional hazards assumption, while the RMST is highly sensitive to the choice of time horizon. This paper introduces two novel, assumption-free estimands to address these limitations: the Highest Risk Density Region (HRDR) and the Highest Net Risk Difference Region (HNRDR).

The HRDR identifies the narrowest time interval containing a pre-specified probability mass of events, directly answering the clinical question: …

Algorithmic Selection Of Iconic Constitutions, Tejas Ramdas, Patrick Chung-Chia Huang, Nuno Garoupa, Martin T. Wells, Yun-Chien Chang, Tom Ginsburg

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This chapter examines the influence of pre-20th century constitutions using a quantitative approach, comparing expert-selected “iconic” constitutions with those identified algorithmically. In prior work, human experts identified four influential constitutions: the U.S. 1791, France 1791, Spain 1812, and France 1848. Here, we employ a genetic algorithm and Document Term Matrix (DTM) analysis to assess which one or four of 180 pre-1899 constitutions had the greatest textual impact on 581 post-1900 constitutions. Two criteria guide the selection: coverage and originality. Through iterative optimization, the algorithm identifies the most textually influential constitutions, allowing for a direct comparison with expert selections. This chapter …

Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse Jan 2025

Development And Application Of Enhanced Sampling Techniques For Investigating Protein Interactions And Drug Discovery, Timothy Hasse

Wayne State University Dissertations

Understanding the dynamics of protein–protein and protein–ligand interactions is critical for elucidating biological function and guiding drug discovery. However, many such processes involve rare events and high energy barriers that are difficult to capture with conventional molecular dynamics (MD). Enhanced sampling techniques extend the reach of MD, enabling access to biologically relevant transitions and thermodynamic properties. In the first project, Gaussian accelerated MD (GaMD) was used to study the MEIG1–PACRG complex, a key regulator of sperm flagellar assembly. Simulations of wildtype and mutant MEIG1 (W50A, Y68A) revealed mutation-specific disruptions to the binding interface and identified druggable pockets, particularly on PACRG. …

Gene Expression And Dna Methylation Changes In Response To Hypoxia In Toxicant-Adapted Atlantic Killifish (Fundulus Heteroclitus), Neelakanteswar Aluru, Yaamini R. Venkataraman, Christopher S. Murray, Veronica Depascuale

Biology

Coastal fish populations are threatened by multiple anthropogenic impacts, including the accumulation of industrial contaminants and the increasing frequency of hypoxia. Some populations of the Atlantic killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus), like those in New Bedford Harbor (NBH), Massachusetts, USA, have evolved a resistance to dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that may influence their ability to cope with secondary stressors. To address this question, we compared hepatic gene expression and DNA methylation patterns in response to mild or severe hypoxia in killifish from NBH and Scorton Creek (SC), a reference population from a relatively pristine environment. We hypothesized that NBH fish would show …
