Incremental Innovation, George Horvath
Incremental Innovation, George Horvath
SMU Science and Technology Law Review
Transformative innovations—the ones that use new technologies to disrupt the world—command our attention. But most new products are the result of a more mundane process of incremental iterative innovation, evolving through a long series of small modifications of existing technologies. Although both kinds of innovation can result in improved safety and utility, both can also create new dangers. We tend to be more aware of this in trans- formative innovations (as current worries over artificial intelligence show); by contrast, dangers created by incremental iterative innovation often go unrecognized, because the process itself is easy to overlook. Policymakers and regulators need …
Disenchanting Consent, Ruifeng Song
Disenchanting Consent, Ruifeng Song
SMU Science and Technology Law Review
Despite being criticized as a flawed mechanism for data protection, con- sent has witnessed a revival in the recent wave of state privacy statutes. One factor that contributed to the revival may be the widely held belief that con- sent constitutes the “cornerstone” of data privacy laws. This Article conducts a comparative historical survey to examine the validity of this belief. The findings are twofold. First, contrary to what many believe, consent has been playing a limited role in global data privacy laws. Second, consent is an inherently defective mechanism for data protection. Some of its problems have existed since …

Judicial Jujitsu In The New Originalism, Marcia L. Mccormick
Judicial Jujitsu In The New Originalism, Marcia L. Mccormick
Saint Louis University Law Journal
The Supreme Court’s adoption of the “history and tradition” test has prompted a substantial body of critique. Most of that critique has focused on problems connected with historical analysis, but additional aspects of the test’s application warrant scrutiny. This essay focuses on one of those: how the Supreme Court redefined what counts as evidence of a right in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Court applied the same test in Dobbs that it had in New York State Rifle and Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen in an opposite manner to reach the opposite result. In Bruen, the Court …

Improving Hemoglobin A1c Levels In A Fqhc: A Quality Improvement Project, Laura E. Mason
Improving Hemoglobin A1c Levels In A Fqhc: A Quality Improvement Project, Laura E. Mason
DNP Projects
Significance and Background
Incarcerated individuals have a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the general population and face unique challenges in managing their condition. These include limited access to nutritious food, disruptions in the healthcare continuity, and socioeconomic barriers such as unstable housing and unemployment. Upon release these challenges can compromise glycemic control.
The Transitions Clinic Model supports formerly incarcerated individuals in managing chronic conditions, including T2D during their reintegration. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) have been shown to improve glycemic control and self-efficacy, leading to reductions in Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. This project aimed to implement a CGM …

Research Days Posters 2025
The study examines how locus of control affects diet quality, stress levels, and resilience. It was hypothesized that individuals with an external locus of control would have poorer diet quality, higher stress, and lack resilience compared to an internal locus of control. Data was collected via an anonymous online survey and analyzed using Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient. Results showed that those who feel unable to control their health consume fewer leafy greens (p< 0.01). People who feel they lack control in their lives were positively correlated with consuming fast and sugary foods (p< 0.01). Those who believe they have a harder time controlling their lives feel that stress is debilitating (p< 0.01). Those who lack confidence in their ability to solve life problems have a harder time rebounding from stressful events (p< 0.01). These results highlight the relationship an external locus of control has on well-being.

Uncovering Seed-Handling And Nest Benefits In An Eastern North American Ant-Plant Seed Dispersal Mutualism, Julian Marshall, Rosebelle Ines
Research Days Posters 2025
In eastern North American forests, Aphaenogaster ants and understory plants are part of a widespread and prominent seed dispersal mutualism. In this mutualism, plants produce seeds with a fatty-acid-rich package that attracts and provides ants with nutrition and the plants experience lower competition. Aphaenogaster ants disperse seeds by moving them from the parent plant into the soil-based ant nest where the ants remove the elaiosome and feed it to their brood. Seeds without elaiosomes are then discarded, sometimes in the nest, and sometimes outside of the nest. Seed deposition locations may provide benefits to germination and establishment between ant species. …

Research Days Posters 2025
This study examines how diet, exercise, emotional intelligence (EI), and disordered eating patterns interact across racial groups. An anonymous online survey of adults aged 18 and older assessed EI traits, eating behaviors, and demographics. Pearson’s Correlation Analysis analyzed associations between diet, exercise, and EI, with an emphasis on racial differences. Among minority participants, exercise and nutrient-dense diets were positively correlated with EI traits such as motivation and stress management (p < 0.01). White participants showed similar correlations but displayed stronger associations between exercise and restrictive eating behaviors (p < 0.01). Additionally, fast food and caffeine intake were linked to disordered eating and body image concerns among White individuals (p < 0.01), while fast food consumption alone was associated with body dissatisfaction in minorities (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that diet and exercise affect emotional well-being and disordered eating in racially distinct ways, highlighting the need for culturally informed interventions.

Food Councils And Federal Committees: Community Responses To Inaction On Food Insecurity By Government, Liam Rupprecht, Kevin O'Connell
Research Days Posters 2025
The issue of food insecurity in the United States is often overlooked, despite its destructive impact on vulnerable groups like children, racial minorities, and those in poverty. Non-white urban communities of color especially have significantly higher rates of household food insecurity due to systemic racism in food systems. Federal efforts have failed to resolve the issue, leaving it to local “food council” organizations that attempt to help through advocacy and charity. These groups face a difficult task: how can they work to mitigate food insecurity with limited community or charity resources, especially in underprivileged areas? This research compiles contemporary scholarly …

The Uptake Puzzle In Expungement Of Criminal Records, Jessica Steinberg, Elenore Wade
The Uptake Puzzle In Expungement Of Criminal Records, Jessica Steinberg, Elenore Wade
Indiana Law Journal
Expungement has an uptake problem. A recent explosion of state-level rights allows people with felony convictions to expunge their criminal record, but only one to six percent of eligible people avail themselves of the remedy. Expungement is a powerful policy tool that promotes social and economic reintegration. It also serves a dignitary purpose, allowing people with criminal records to unshackle themselves from past mistakes. One might assume people would rush to court to clear their records. That the opposite is occurring—and new laws are idling on the books—suggests that rights-creation in this space has not been efficacious. This demands a …

Pitzer Senior Theses
This thesis presents a holistic analysis of power dynamics within the global soybean value chain, through the evaluation of the trade relationship between Brazil and the European Union. In order to identify how critical decisions regarding sustainability are concentrated among a few dominant actors. Eight core stakeholder groups are mapped: land-use conversion actors, producers, traders, agro-input providers, financial institutions, regulatory bodies, NGOs, and key consumers, including meatpacking and animal feed companies. Multinational traders, who control approximately 80% of global soy trade, act as sustainability gatekeepers through their lobbying influence and control over supply chain narratives and are disincentivized from human …
