BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age is a complex perinatal syndrome associated with increased neonatal morbidity, mortality, and impaired childhood growth and neurodevelopment. Current classifications rely primarily on birthweight, which does not capture the heterogeneity of the condition nor predict long-term health outcomes. Here we aim to identify and characterize distinct small for gestational age subgroups and assess their neonatal and early childhood health trajectories.
OBJECTIVE: To refine the classification of small for gestational age by identifying subgroups based on maternal, fetal, and environmental factors and evaluating their associations with neonatal morbidity, growth, and neurodevelopment at age 2.

Patient is a 2-year-old male who was originally referred to GI for failure to thrive and recurrent vomiting following feeds. Upper GI showed long-segment stricture with mid-thoracic tapering and initial EGD revealed 2mmx5cm distal esophageal stricture that was balloon dilated with serial dilations and triamcinolone injections. He presented one week after his 3rd dilation with fever, vomiting and respiratory distress and was found to have cardiac tamponade, left pleural effusion, septic shock and esophageal perforation. He was transferred to the ICU and started on broad-spectrum antibiotics, IV fluids and chest tube placement. He required intubation and vasopressors. After stabilization, esophogram …

Balancing Act: Addressing Child Quantity-Quality Trade-Off In The Philippine Households With Educational And Health Social Programs, John Andrew A. Alsol, Marie Carroline Magante
Economics Department Faculty Publications
The child quantity-quality (CQQ) trade-off has been extensively studied in economic research since it was first introduced by Becker and Lewis in 1973. Studies have argued that the current economic circumstances and the presence of government aid in education and health determine the existence and extent of the CQQ trade-off. However, there is a dearth of empirically tested research on the possible decreasing effects of social programs on the CQQ trade-off. Using the 2019 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey, this paper seeks to determine the effect of education and health social programs on the CQQ trade-off in the Philippines. Probit models …
Graphic Design For Visual Narratives: The Semiotics Of Diegetic Retrofuturism, Brooke Luke Ballard
Graphic Design For Visual Narratives: The Semiotics Of Diegetic Retrofuturism, Brooke Luke Ballard
Theses
While semiotics, diegesis, and retrofuturism have all been discussed at length in academia, it is uncommon to find the synthesis of all three. When these concepts are combined, it forms what I argue is a new genre of graphic design now prevalent enough in contemporary media to warrant definition and analysis. This thesis first explores the theories of visual semiotics, narrative diegesis, and retrofuturistic aesthetics individually before uniting them as a new design genre. Several candidates for this design classification will then be examined in case studies that meet the criteria of 1) containing a visual language that a modern …

The Effects Of Head Injury On Executive Function And Emotion Regulation In Male And Female Athletes, Anna Christine Speer
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Head injuries are a common occurrence among athletes, and research on concussions has seen significant rise alongside an increasing awareness of their symptoms and effects. Women’s involvement in sports has also rapidly increased in recent decades. However, a significant gap in research exists as to how the effects of head injuries may differ across sexes, particularly regarding executive function and emotion regulation. This study aimed to bridge this gap in research by investigating how the frequency of head injuries in both female and male athletes impact executive functioning and emotion regulation among current and former athletes. Current and former athletes …

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity. Previous studies have demonstrated that healthcare disparities affect the initial presentation of AIS patients. However, studies have utilized various socioeconomic status (SES) indices with no previous study assessing the congruency of these indices.
METHODS: A single-center, retrospective review of adolescent patients presenting for initial evaluation of scoliosis was performed at a tertiary care pediatric hospital based in the central United States. Patient demographic data were recorded in addition to radiographic data consisting of coronal curve magnitude at presentation and skeletal maturity indices. Socioeconomic variables were collected, including geographic area of …

Background: Feeding of human milk enhances infant health and survival over alternative feeding methods, but early cessation often occurs due to perceived or real insufficient milk supply. Moringa oleifera leaves are nutrient dense and may increase milk output. Objectives: We investigated the impact of maternal dried moringa leaf powder supplementation (moringa) on milk composition and output and infant and maternal health. Methods: Breastfeeding mother–infant pairs (n = 50) living in Kisumu County, Kenya, were cluster-randomized by location to consume moringa powder (20 g/d) in corn porridge (the moringa group) or corn porridge alone (the control group) for 3 mo. Neighborhood Impacts Of Gentrification On Urban Communities, J Coley
The Lender Center for Social Justice
In many mid-sized U.S. cities, university and hospital expansion has spurred new development while displacing long-established Black communities. This study examines how Black homeowners and tenants in Buffalo’s Fruit Belt neighborhood navigate institutional gentrification driven by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Using interviews and story circles with 50 residents, the research reveals that most residents support neighborhood improvement but demand development without displacement. Participants report rising property taxes, rent hikes, and exclusion from planning processes that threaten community stability and wealth. Despite these challenges, residents organize through efforts like the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust to resist displacement and promote …

Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are common features of neurodegenerative disease (NDD) but are relatively understudied compared to cognition, especially regarding biomarkers. Further, emerging evidence describes the utility of systematic assessment of NPS across the cognitive continuum, even in advance of dementia. In this narrative review, we discuss the role of plasma biomarkers in relation to NPS across the cognitive continuum of unimpaired, subjective cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia. While Alzheimer's disease is the primary focus, vascular, Lewy body, and frontotemporal dementia etiologies are also discussed. Literature searches included NPS and dementia-related search terms with additional literature identified based on …

Protein from edible mushrooms can serve as a new alternative protein to replace meat in various food formulations. However, the processing characteristics of mushroom protein were poor. In this study, ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and transglutaminase (TGase) were used for the modification of protein from Stropharia rugosoannulata (SRP) to improve its utilization. The optimal parameters of UAE were 480 W for 20 min. The process of TGase modification was optimized by a single-factor experiment and response surface test to obtain the TGase dosage of 0.36 % (w/w), cross-linking at 40℃ for 1.5 h, and reaction pH of 5.4. The effects of …

Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO) or Ogilvie’s syndrome is an acute dilatation of the small or large bowel without an obstructive lesion. Symptoms include abdominal distension, nausea and vomiting, constipation and occasional dyspnea. The disorder most commonly involves the cecum and right colon and is most frequently seen in male patients above the age of 60 (1). It is rare for Ogilvie’s to occur in the pediatric population though some infrequent instances have been reported. Here, we report a case of a patient with significant abdominal distension and gaseous distension seen on x-ray, which was diagnosed and treated as Ogilvie’s syndrome. …
