Simulating The Effect Of Measurement Error On Stride Time Detrended Fluctuation Analysis, Ben D. M. Jones, David L. Carey, Jon Wheat, Kane Middleton, Ben Heller

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The aim of this study was to investigate the sensitivity of running stride time detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) to simulated noise and the impact of noise on reliability measures. Varying magnitudes of Gaussian and uniform noise were added to series of touchdown event timings from 11 runners. DFA-α were calculated for ground truth and simulated stride time series. Simulated series were paired and test-retest ICC estimates computed. The error in DFA-α increased with noise magnitude, with stride time series transitioning from persistent to anti-persistent behaviour for greater magnitudes of noise. However, median ICC estimates stayed above 0.95 for all standard …

Characterization Of Shoulder Moments And Force Application In Static And Dynamic Campus Exercises, Juliana Exel Phd, Judith Satzinger, Willi Koller, Arnold Baca, Hans Kainz

ISBS Proceedings Archive

This study aimed to characterize shoulder joint moments and force application patterns in static and dynamic campus exercises. Campus exercises are upper-body plyometric movements performed on a ladder-like training board, where climbers ascend using only their arms, without foot support. Twenty advanced/elite climbers performed five trials of each exercise on an instrumented two-rung campus board. Shoulder joint moments on the 3 planes of motion and vertical forces for each limb were computed across the exercise cycles and time series were compared. Results showed that dynamic campus exercises elicited higher shoulder joint moments in the sagittal and frontal planes, particularly during …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

BACKGROUND: Of patients who receive standard concomitant chemoradiation (CRT; intensity-modulated radiation therapy [IMRT] plus cisplatin) for locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC), approximately two-thirds will develop severe oral mucositis (SOM), limiting their ability to eat solids (WHO grade 3) or drink liquids (WHO grade 4). In a randomized, double-blind phase 2b trial, avasopasem manganese substantially reduced duration and incidence of SOM versus placebo. This phase 3 trial further assessed avasopasem's reduction of SOM due to CRT.

METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03689712), patients receiving 60-72 Gy IMRT (>50 Gy to ≥2 oral mucosal sites) plus cisplatin …

Antibodies against the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) E6 oncoprotein are promising biomarkers for the early detection of HPV-driven oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPSCC). Standard serologic testing is challenging in underserved regions with high HPV+OPSCC incidence. Dried blood spot (DBS) cards offer a low-resource alternative but remain unevaluated for HPV antibody detection. A total of 25 OPSCC patients who provided paired serum (venipuncture) and DBS (finger-prick) samples were recruited from the University of Kentucky. HPV16 antibodies (L1, E1, E2, E4, E6, E7) were measured using multiplex serology, quantified as median fluorescence intensity (MFI) and dichotomized using established cutoffs. Correlation between …

Frequency Dependence Favours Social Plasticity And Facilitates Socio-Eco-Evolutionary Feedback In Fluctuating Environments, Jordan S. Martin, David F. Westneat, Alastair J. Wilson, Niels J. Dingemanse, Yimen G. Araya-Ajoy

Biology Faculty Publications

Increasing attention is being devoted to the study of phenotypic plasticity in social environments. However, much remains unknown about the selection pressures driving the evolution of social plasticity, as well as the pathways by which social plasticity may facilitate or constrain feedback between ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Here, we explore these questions using quantitative genetic models, providing general results regarding the causes of selection on social reaction norms, as well as their consequences for adaptive microevolution in fluctuating environments. We model the fitness effects of character states expressed across spatially heterogeneous microhabitats, with variation in the degree to which trait …

Prahita, Power, And Partnership (Ppp) : Navigating Community-Based Welfare And Clientelism In Myanmar’S Poverty Reduction, Comparative Analysis Of Myanmar And Thailand, Mai Tam Aung Seinn

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

Myanmar’s persistent poverty has been deeply rooted in its current political unrest, decades of poor governance, and entrenched clientelism – a system where informal patronage networks exchange material benefits for political loyalty, sidelining equitable welfare delivery (Jones, 2014, Berenschot and Mulder, 2019). The serial issues have now developed into a poly-crisis which consists of a confluence of economic collapse, political instability, and disasters like COVID-19, cyclones, earthquakes, and armed conflicts (UNDP, 2025b). Therefore, the study aims to synthesize Myanmar’s complex interplay between grassroots welfare systems, power dynamics, and external partnerships within Myanmar’s fragile context and proposes to comprehensively investigate poverty …

Slimmer’S Paralysis In The Era Of Glp-1 Therapy: A Review Of Recent Cases, Nidhin John, Amayrani Sanchez, Naomie Jean Nov 2025

Slimmer’S Paralysis In The Era Of Glp-1 Therapy: A Review Of Recent Cases, Nidhin John, Amayrani Sanchez, Naomie Jean

School of Podiatric Medicine - Student Research

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have transformed obesity management by producing substantial and sustained weight loss. However, rapid weight reduction has been increasingly associated with peroneal neuropathy, or “slimmer’s paralysis.” This review summarizes the pathophysiology, recent case reports, and clinical implications of this emerging complication. Slimmer’s paralysis arises indirectly through loss of protective adipose tissue around the fibular head and nutritional deficiencies, rather than direct neurotoxic effects of GLP-1 agents. Recognition is critical, as timely intervention with conservative or surgical management can restore function. Clinicians should maintain vigilance in patients undergoing rapid pharmacologic weight …
