Identifying Research-Based Practices For Increasing Peer Interaction In Children With Hearing Impairment: A Review Of The Literature, Amal Aldawoud
Identifying Research-Based Practices For Increasing Peer Interaction In Children With Hearing Impairment: A Review Of The Literature, Amal Aldawoud
International Journal for Research in Education
Establishing peer interaction is critical for all childhood development, especially for children with hearing impairment (HI), who tend to experience a lot of difficulties in interaction. Practices aiming to promote peer interaction in children with HI need to be informed by evidence from quality research. This paper aims to review and evaluate research studies that focus on interaction between children with HI and their peers (with or without HI) in self-contained and inclusive classrooms. Seven empirical studies published in peer-reviewed journals from 1990 to 2023 were examined and evaluated, using the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC, 2014) quality indicators. Several …
"Restoration Under The Davidic Shepherd-King": An Exposition Of Ezekiel 37:15–28, Angela Gloria Erum
"Restoration Under The Davidic Shepherd-King": An Exposition Of Ezekiel 37:15–28, Angela Gloria Erum
Liberty Theological Review
Considering what is happening to Israel in the Middle East these days, this exposition of Ezekiel 37:15–28 provides hope for the people of Israel as well as the Gentile believers in Christ. Ezekiel 37:15–28 exhibits Yahweh’s covenantal promise to gather His people (the people of Israel) from other nations, restore them to their land, and reunify them (both northern and southern kingdoms) as one nation under one king, the Davidic shepherd-king; thus, other nations would realize that Yahweh is God. By examining Ezekiel 37:15–28, this paper will attempt to demonstrate the exegesis and the theological implications of the passage through …

Voices From Roger's Park: How Entrepreneurs Navigate Cultural And Language Challenges With Community-Focused Advising, Fatimah Amaturraheem
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
This study explores the cultural and linguistic challenges of entrepreneurs and business-serving organizations (BSOs) in Rogers Park, Chicago, highlighting how community-focused advising supports resilience and growth. Drawing on qualitative interview data, we analyze how entrepreneurs navigate language barriers, adapt to cultural expectations, and leverage community networks. Findings reveal that cultural and language differences create unique operational challenges, addressed through tailored, community-based advising that fosters social capital and business acumen. This research underscores the value of culturally sensitive advising in supporting diverse, immigrant-rich communities.
A Review Examining The Factors Contributory To The Socialization Of A Culture Of Environmental Stewardship, Colby Nixon
A Review Examining The Factors Contributory To The Socialization Of A Culture Of Environmental Stewardship, Colby Nixon
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Environmental stewardship is an ambiguous but significant term meaning that responsibility for the environment — and its quality — is shared between all individuals who interact with it. As a culture-wide phenomena, it is correlated with a mutualistic relationship with nature and the Earth. My study responds to a question as to which and how variables contribute to a societal mindset of environmental stewardship. This review synthesizes numerous studies across diverse cultures and contexts to examine trends therein. In doing so, I discovered that religion, policy, human development, linguistics, and economic roles play a part in socializing environmental stewardship into …

Unlocking The Potential Of Refugee Students, Aisling Heaphy
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Forging Opportunities for Refugees in America (FORA) is a Chicago-based non-profit that provides tutoring services to refugee students including Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE). As a Restorative Justice Educational Intern at FORA, I worked individually with students to provide High Impact Tutoring that focused on developing literacy skills. Over the course of my internship, I researched the most effective methods for comprehensively accommodating the educational and emotional needs of SLIFE who are experiencing a formal classroom setting for the first time. My research showed that FORA fills important gaps when it comes to effectively educating SLIFE.
Using Mind Maps To Make Student Knowledge Visible In An Aac Course, Allison Sauerwein, Natalie Quinlan, Coral Viernow
Using Mind Maps To Make Student Knowledge Visible In An Aac Course, Allison Sauerwein, Natalie Quinlan, Coral Viernow
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Concept maps make students’ knowledge visible. Creating a mind map gives students an opportunity to organize their knowledge and allows instructors to visualize and assess it. When students create mind maps at multiple time points, instructors can compare the maps and use the themes, patterns, and gaps that emerge to reflect on their teaching and take action. The purpose of this study was to use concept maps in an AAC course to uncover students’ knowledge. A total of 61 graduate students created a mind map with AAC as the central concept at the beginning and end of the term in …

Phonological Awareness Abilities Of Undergraduate College Students: A Comparison Of Students In Related And Unrelated Majors, Jennifer Binkley, Jessica Mchugh Conlin, Terry W. Baggs, Whitney Lucas Molitor, William Schweinle
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
An observational study was conducted to evaluate the differences in the phonological awareness (PA) abilities of undergraduate college students in majors related versus unrelated to PA. In order to participate, students must not have had any formal PA or phonetics instruction at the college level. A total of 116 undergraduate students voluntarily participated in an PA assessment, with results analyzed based upon the following three categories: Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) major, education major, and other major. Using non-parametric statistical analysis, there were statistically significant differences in CSD majors, in multiple categories of PA skills, compared to both education majors …

Academic And Clinical Experiences Of Au.D. Students Who Identify As Members Of Historically Marginalized Racial And Ethnic (Hmre) Groups, Annicka S. Golding, Diana C. Emanuel, Iona Ringgold, Artice Weston
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Few qualitative research papers detail the experiential narratives of communication sciences and disorders (CSD) students from historically marginalized racial and ethnic (HMRE) groups, especially Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) students. This study examined the educational experiences of Au.D. students from HMRE groups. A mixed methods design including a survey (n = 28) and journal narratives (n = 9) was used. Qualitative analysis of survey questions and journal entries revealed five themes: Wellness Management, Presence of Stressors, Significance of Representation, Discrimination Experiences, and Diversity Initiatives. Participant narratives revealed academic and clinical experiences are often influenced by racial and ethnic identity …
Csd Students Of Color Navigating The Graduate School Admissions Process: A Gauntlet, Marcella Cardoza Mccollum
Csd Students Of Color Navigating The Graduate School Admissions Process: A Gauntlet, Marcella Cardoza Mccollum
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Regardless of entry point, nearly all potential speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in the United States (US) share the experience of navigating the arduous application process for graduate school. For students of color, especially first-generation students, this application process can serve to cause them to question whether they belong in the field. This may be one of the key factors that manifests itself in the lack of diversity within the profession. This study followed nine undergraduate Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) students across nine months from application cycle through post-baccalaureate life as they shared their experiences about deciding whether to apply for …

Fair Notice Is A Sociopolitical Choice, Alexander Zhang
Fair Notice Is A Sociopolitical Choice, Alexander Zhang
Duke Law Journal
This Article reframes a deadlocked debate about “fair notice” as a justification for statutory interpretation methods by developing a historical account of a crucial, overlooked dimension: legislatures’ and laypeople’s value judgments about notice. On one side of the debate are idealists who contend, on due process grounds, that judges should embrace interpretive methods and theories based on how well they promote fair notice. On the other side are realists who counter, on empirical grounds, that perfect notice is impossible. Each side continues to talk past the other because we lack a fleshed-out framework for evaluating when the fair-notice basis of …

When the sun sets in New York City, it rises in Tokyo. Okay, maybe not exactly, but you get the idea: setting somewhere, rising somewhere else. Now substitute Chevron for N.Y.C. and the Major Questions Doctrine for Tokyo. For the past forty years, administrative law scholars have been arguing over Chevron, and now that the sun has set on that doctrine, it’s time to turn our attention to the new rising sun, the Major Questions Doctrine (“MQD”). The sudden emergence …
