Digital twins are meant to revolutionize the manufacturing industry by enabling advanced condition monitoring and predictive maintenance processes. However, disruptions within the manufacturing process, such as sensor malfunctions or connectivity issues are inevitable and will cripple these advanced analysis methods if not properly addressed. Therefore, efficient data management and analysis practices are key to advancing this technology. This work examines the impact of missing data imputation on model parameter estimation, a crucial task in developing models for digital twins. We theoretically derive the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) for a DC signal with an unknown scalar parameter in the presence of …

Conservative Opposition To Climate Policy May Be Partially Threat-Based: A Test And Critique Of The Integrated Threat Model Of Climate Attitudes, Samantha K. Stanley, Zoe Leviston, Kirsti M. Jylhä, Iain Walker

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

One explanation for the link between political conservatism and rejection of the science and solutions of climate change is based on perceived threats. Yet, until recently, this claim has not been studied by simultaneously considering the different levels at which individuals may experience a sense of threat (i.e., threat of climate change or climate policy, at personal or collective level, on economic or cultural domains). A recent theoretical advance integrated the existing threat-based explanations for conservatives' lower acceptance of climate change and support for pro-climate policy. We aimed to subject aspects of this integrated threat model of climate change attitudes …

Content Subversion Against 1 Information-Based Systems, Junjie Xiong, Ian Markwood, Dakun Shen, Yao Liu, Zhuo Lu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a novel class of content subversion attacks against information-based services, causing documents to appear to humans dissimilar to the underlying content extracted by information-based services. We demonstrate the significant impact of these attacks on real-world systems through five distinct variants. Our first attack allows academic paper writers and reviewers to collude via subverting the automatic reviewer assignment systems in current use by academic conferences including INFOCOM, which we reproduced. Our second attack renders ineffective plagiarism detection software, particularly Turnitin, targeting specific small plagiarism similarity scores to appear natural and evade detection. In our third attack, we place masked …

A Comparative Case Study Of Learners Experiencing Interdependent Empowered Care In Marginalizing Contexts, Elizabeth Gil

GSE Faculty Publications

This comparative case study’s purpose is to explore how multi-age learn-
ers, both adults and children, from immigrant backgrounds experienced
care in two educational settings in the United States and Ireland. Using
data from two separate qualitative studies, this paper draws on the
authors’ conceptualization of interdependent empowered care (IEC) to
argue that the settings exemplified three separate, but interrelated, care
elements: 1) identity-affirming counterspaces; 2) interdependency and
reciprocity; and 3) a means to achieve greater empowerment and agency.
This cross-national study illuminates the role of care in educational set-
tings to understand how it helps multi-age learners from immigrant …
