Standard Education For Standard Thought: Standardization And Accountability As An Antithesis To Critical Consciousness, Taya Black-Kobrynich
Standard Education For Standard Thought: Standardization And Accountability As An Antithesis To Critical Consciousness, Taya Black-Kobrynich
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This thesis explores the impact of neoliberal policies on educational standardization and examines how these policies have shaped contemporary educational practices. The central argument posits that the emphasis on standardization within education systems, driven by neoliberal ideologies, significantly undermines the development of critical consciousness in students and society. By prioritizing uniformity and measurable outcomes, educational standardization restricts creativity, inquisitiveness, and critical thinking skills— essential components of raising democratic citizens.
Drawing on a comprehensive review of history and literature, this research demonstrates how standardization policies promote a narrow, test-focused curriculum that neglects the natural inquiry of students. The analysis highlights the …
All That May Become A Man: Dynamics Of Gender And Violence In Macbeth, Lauren M. Schuster
All That May Become A Man: Dynamics Of Gender And Violence In Macbeth, Lauren M. Schuster
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The text of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is rife with the language of gender crisis, with the titular character and his wife struggling against the repressive nature of patriarchal gender norms. It is this conflict between individual gender expression and societal ideals of gender that underscores the play’s central conflict, with Lady Macbeth’s rejection of typical femininity as an inciting force for the murder of King Duncan and the chaos that follows. In my reading of Macbeth, I focus on the rhetoric of material sex and gender performativity. In doing so, I examine what such rhetoric suggests about the patriarchal structures …
Finding Meaning In Modern Crisis: Hypermodernity And The Vita Activa, Jacob B. Tease
Finding Meaning In Modern Crisis: Hypermodernity And The Vita Activa, Jacob B. Tease
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Hannah Arendt’s 1958 book The Human Condition describes modernity through the lens of the vita activa. While useful in understanding human experience with modernity, the way the world has advanced makes the vita activa insufficient for describing our present world. I argue that the world is now in a state of hypermodernity, and use the vita activa to describe how powerlessness develops in the face of large-scale hypermodern crisis. The concern of hypermodernity is that humans experience an inability to perform true action, and this results in powerlessness. Hypermodern powerlessness translates into an inability to meaningfully affect …
Exploring Macro- And Microplastic Pollution In Southeastern Pennsylvania Ecosystems, Victoria Moreira
Exploring Macro- And Microplastic Pollution In Southeastern Pennsylvania Ecosystems, Victoria Moreira
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Plastics have become a ubiquitous pollutant due to their increasing production worldwide. Current recycling infrastructure is inadequate, causing most plastics to end up in landfills or the environment, where they can take decades to break down and release additional pollutants in the process. To combat plastic pollution, nearly thirty municipalities in southeastern Pennsylvania have enacted single-use plastic (SUP) bans. We sampled anthropogenic litter from nine stream sites within municipalities with three different SUP ban statuses for seven sampling rounds roughly one month apart. We found that riparian areas within active SUP bans had more SUPs and other plastic items than …
All Under Control: How Trait Emotional Intelligence May Moderate The Effect Of State Arousal On Implicit Attitudes Towards Academic Dishonesty, Daniel J. Moco
All Under Control: How Trait Emotional Intelligence May Moderate The Effect Of State Arousal On Implicit Attitudes Towards Academic Dishonesty, Daniel J. Moco
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The current study examined predictors in the changing of implicit attitudes toward academic dishonesty (AD). The primary predictor measured was self-reported stress and arousal, the strength of which being a possible influence on one’s change in implicit attitudes. Trait emotional intelligence (EI) was measured as a covariate and potential moderator of the interaction between stress and arousal, and one’s implicit attitudes toward AD. One hundred nine undergraduate psychology students from a public university were recruited to take assessments for trait EI, stress and arousal, and implicit attitudes toward AD. To manipulate the induction of stress and arousal, participants were randomly …
A Prophetic Priority A Vital Voice, Shauna Seamons
A Prophetic Priority A Vital Voice, Shauna Seamons
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Prophets today are inviting women to use their voices and are prioritizing the importance and inclusion of women’s voices and their contributions in the kingdom of God—both those from scripture and history as well as those in our religious education classes. As religious educators we must be aware of this priority, and we have a responsibility to create environments that generate greater gender equality in religious education classrooms. This article will address three obstacles to embracing women’s voices and provide suggested solutions to that end.
Come, Follow Me And Life Preparation, Denise Mccubbins
Come, Follow Me And Life Preparation, Denise Mccubbins
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
This paper explores foundational principles for effective gospel teaching in seminary: being Christ-centered, learner-focused, and scripture-based. It highlights the integration of Come, Follow Me and Life Preparation lessons to address students’ spiritual and practical needs. Teachers are encouraged to balance exegesis (understanding scripture’s original intent) and eisegesis (personal application) for meaningful, doctrinally accurate lessons. Through creative and purposeful scripture study, educators can align lesson objectives with students’ lives, fostering deeper conversion to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Layered Harms Of Nursing Home Segregation, Mary Crossley
The Layered Harms Of Nursing Home Segregation, Mary Crossley
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
This Essay explores several dimensions of how segregation, separation, and shielding from view permit and contribute to the ethically problematic state of nursing home care in the United States. A quarter of a century ago, the Supreme Court recognized in the Olmstead decision that institutional care can function to segregate disabled people (whether young or old) from the richness of community life. Research over the past few decades confirms that racial segregation exists within the nursing home industry, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the correlations between nursing homes’ racial makeup and their level of COVID fatalities were shocking. On another …
Fraudulent Transfer Law’S Forgotten Foundations, Douglas G. Baird
Fraudulent Transfer Law’S Forgotten Foundations, Douglas G. Baird
The University of Chicago Business Law Review
Fraudulent transfer law is one of the principal bulwarks of private law. Fraudulent transfer law, however, now faces a crisis. Courts have long assumed that it was easy to determine whether a debtor made a fraudulent transfer of its property. One could use traditional markers of ownership to determine whether the debtor transferred property to a confederate. But today, most assets are intangible. Transactions happen in the blink of an eye, and they take place entirely on corporate books. Reliance on simple notions of what constitutes a “transfer” of property is wholly inadequate. Understanding what it means for a debtor …

Development Of Self-Healing Polymer From Bio-Based Benzoxazine Blend With Poly(Ethylene Glycol) For Anti-Biofouling Applications, Pharaporn Yodkum
Development Of Self-Healing Polymer From Bio-Based Benzoxazine Blend With Poly(Ethylene Glycol) For Anti-Biofouling Applications, Pharaporn Yodkum
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Biofouling remains a significant challenge in marine industries, as conventional coatings often lose their antifouling efficacy once they become damaged. Incorporating self-healing capabilities into antifouling coatings has therefore emerged as a promising strategy to extend service life and maintain long-term performance. In this study, self-healing polymers were developed based on a bio-derived benzoxazine resin (E-fa), synthesized from renewable precursors including eugenol (a phenol source), furfurylamine (an amine source), and paraformaldehyde, and subsequently blended with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The blends were formulated with varying weight ratios (95/5, 90/10, 85/15, and 80/20 wt/wt%) and PEG molecular weights (PEG-600, PEG-1500, and PEG-4000). This …
Boxa-Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticle As The Treatment For Pulmonary Fibrosis In Rat Model, Rathasapa Patarat
Boxa-Calcium Phosphate Nanoparticle As The Treatment For Pulmonary Fibrosis In Rat Model, Rathasapa Patarat
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Pulmonary fibrosis is a suffocating disease. The patients whose diagnosed by it mostly have periodic difficulty breathing or long-term experience of shortness of breath on daily basis which resulted in decreased in quality of life. The median survival rate is 3 years after diagnosis in the severe cases. One of the most common severe forms of pulmonary disease is the Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). There is currently no consensus on the precise mechanism of the pulmonary fibrosis. The cause of the pulmonary fibrosis can be varying from simple lung infection or mechanical injury to autoimmune disease or radiation exposure. All …
Surveying Subterranean Biodiversity Of The Tongass National Forest Using Traditional Survey Approaches And Environmental Dna (Edna) Metabarcoding, Jared P. Higgs
Theses
The Tongass National Forest (TNF) is a large temperate rainforest in southeastern Alaska, much of which is underlain by karst. Timber harvest, among other threats, can have detrimental effects on karst habitats; however, the subterranean fauna of this region is understudied and lacks a baseline for monitoring. I spent three field seasons conducting biological assessments of caves in the TNF using two approaches: traditional specimen-based sampling and eDNA metabarcoding. To improve the reference sequence database, I generated 213 novel sequences from invertebrate specimens collected from 35 caves. I also collected 125 water samples from 39 sites for environmental DNA (eDNA) …
Investigating The Plasticity And Role Of Peripherally Derived Cd4 T Cells In The Brain At Homeostasis, Tomomi Marie Yoshida
Investigating The Plasticity And Role Of Peripherally Derived Cd4 T Cells In The Brain At Homeostasis, Tomomi Marie Yoshida
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Specialized immune cells residing in tissues orchestrate diverse biological functions through communication with parenchymal cells. The contribution of the innate immune compartment in the meninges and central nervous system (CNS) is well-characterized, however, whether T cells as part of the adaptive immune system reside in the brain and are involved in homeostasis is poorly understood. Here, we identify that the subfornical organ (SFO) region of the brain is a nucleus for parenchymal T cells in the steady-state brain in both mice and humans. Using unbiased transcriptomics, we found that these extravascular T cells in the mouse brain are distinct from …

Nikethamide, N,N-diethyl-3-pyridinecarboxamide (Coramine®) is a central nervous system stimulant at one time used therapeutically in human medicine but no longer marketed in the US. Nikethamide is classified a Drug Class 1, Penalty Class A substance by the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) and as a Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) SO or banned Stimulant that lacks FDA approval. Identifications of Nikethamide or its metabolite N-Ethylnicotinamide in racing samples can result in significant penalties in horse racing. Nikethamide is rapidly metabolized to N-Ethylnicotinamide, which remains detectable in plasma and urine leading to its use as a regulatory “marker” of …
Host Defense Inside & Outside Of The Immune System: Modeling Antimicrobial Immunity By Gbps, Zhongyu Yuan
Host Defense Inside & Outside Of The Immune System: Modeling Antimicrobial Immunity By Gbps, Zhongyu Yuan
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Traditional views of host defense often focus on antibody-mediated neutralization, cytotoxic T-cell plus NK-cell-mediated killing, and phagocytic activities by cell populations originating in the bone marrow as part of the classical immune system. Additional effector activities, however, also operate in non-immune cells which compose the stroma or parenchyma of host tissues. These latter cell populations often mobilize antimicrobial activities in response to cytokines such as type II IFN (IFN-gamma; IFN-) against a wide variety of intracellular pathogens.
Among the most prominent IFN--stimulated genes are a family of immune dynamin-like GTPases termed the Guanylate Binding Proteins (GBPs). GBPs are widely expressed …

Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) Faculty Publications
Introduction
Tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy are common procedures performed by otolaryngologists that can result in complications for which patients may seek compensation. Medical malpractice case analyses may offer insight into how clinicians can avoid risk and improve patient satisfaction. We aimed to comprehensively characterize litigation after mastoidectomies and tympanoplasties in the United States.
Methods
The Westlaw Campus Research legal database was searched for all available court decisions associated with claims of medical malpractice after tympanoplasty and/or mastoidectomy in the United States between 1975 and 2022. Information on the plaintiffs' relationships to the patients, patient characteristics, states where the procedures took place, …

A Comparison Of Allergen Sensitization Profiles In Patients With Chronic Rhinosinusitis With And Without Nasal Polyposis, Lauren Trzcinski, Suhas Bharadwaj, Randall A. Bloch, Joseph K. Han, Kent K. Lam
Department of Otolaryngology (ENT) Faculty Publications
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and allergic rhinitis (AR) are common comorbid sinonasal conditions. CRS is classically divided into two distinct phenotypes: CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) and CRS without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP). The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to determine whether aeroallergen sensitization profiles in patients with comorbid CRS and AR can distinguish between CRSwNP and CRSsNP. A total of 241 patients diagnosed with comorbid CRS and AR who underwent skin prick testing or in vitro allergy testing in a single tertiary rhinology practice were included for evaluation. The rates of allergen-specific sensitizations in CRSwNP patients were compared with …

Sensor Fusion For Enhancing Motion Capture : Integrating Optical And Inertial Motion Capture Systems, Hailey Hicks
Theses
This study aimed to create and evaluate a custom sensor fusion algorithm based on Gauss-Newton optimization that combines Optical Motion Capture (OMC) and Inertial Motion Capture (IMC) measurements to combat the limitations of solely using each system. The goal was to demonstrate how inertial measurement unit (IMU) data can be seamlessly integrated into motion capture data to provide a more efficient and reliable gap filling process for future research. The algorithm takes the first and last frame of OMC data, as quaternions, and fills the rest with IMU gyroscope orientation data to simulate gaps of up to ten minutes. The …
Factors Affecting Freshwater Fish Communities In Two North Alabama Counties, Joshua Fitts
Factors Affecting Freshwater Fish Communities In Two North Alabama Counties, Joshua Fitts
Theses
This study examined how physical habitat characteristics influence freshwater fish diversity in streams of Madison and Limestone Counties, Alabama. Ten 150-meter stream reaches were sampled using backpack electrofishing and seining, with habitat variables measured at fixed transects. Principal component analysis identified four main habitat gradients representing flow and substrate, channel size, gravel dominance, and canopy–bedrock conditions. Although overall species richness and Shannon diversity were not significantly related to these gradients, species-specific correlations revealed clear ecological preferences. Regression models showed that root wads, herbaceous vegetation, and riprap modestly increased richness, emphasizing the role of structural diversity. These findings highlight the importance …

General aviation pilots who encounter hazardous weather face a heightened risk of fatal accidents compared to those in other sectors of aviation. To help avoid unplanned weather encounters, accurate information on cloud type and sky conditions can enhance situational awareness and hazard recognition. Among available weather information resources, ground-based webcam networks are growing for aviation meteorology and other interests such as wildfire monitoring. These webcams can provide near-real-time visual weather information to pilots, especially in regions of complex terrain where traditional weather observation methods may lack adequate spatial and temporal coverage. To harness the benefits from webcams while reducing the …
