Identifying Subject Bias In Wifi-Based Human Activity Recognition Evaluation Methods, Amany Elkelany, Robert J. Ross, Susan Mckeever
Conference papers
WiFi-based Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has emerged as a promising approach for monitoring and analysing human activities in a non-intrusive manner, leveraging WiFi signals for activity classification. Despite advancements, existing WiFi-based HAR research lacks consideration of subject (human) bias. This results in learning models performing well on individuals used in the training samples but failing to generalise to new/unseen subjects, in contrast to known good practices in machine learning. In this paper, we address this oversight directly by systematically examining the evaluation methodology for the WiFi-based HAR context. Specifically, we investigate the impact of Leave-One-Subject-Out Cross-Validation (LOSOCV) in a hybrid …

Rare event prediction is critical in industrial applications, including real-world Industry 4.0 applications. These events, defined by their low occurrence frequency, are often difficult to predict due to the skewed data distribution, which complicates modeling and evaluation. In our research, we provide a comprehensive review of current approaches to rare event prediction across four key dimensions: rare event data, data processing techniques, algorithmic approaches, and evaluation methodologies [1]. By analyzing diverse datasets with multiple modalities, including numerical, image, text, and audio, we categorize the primary challenges and present the gaps in current research. Specifically, we present three novel research contributions …

A clinically relevant multidrug solid comprising sulbactam (β-lactamase inhibitor) and amantadine (antiviral) displays enhanced thermal stability and sustained antibacterial activity compared to starting materials.
We describe the formation of a multidrug salt comprising sulbactam (SUL, β-lactamase inhibitor) and amantadine (AMNH, antiviral). Physicochemical investigation of the SUL·AMNH salt revealed enhanced thermal stability compared to pristine starting materials. In vitro studies found that salt formation in SUL·AMNH does not disrupt antibacterial activity against model organisms Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis. To our knowledge, we show the first β-lactamase inhibitor-antiviral salt where both components have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug …

Recent advancements in artificial neural networks have enabled impressive tasks on classical computers, but they demand significant computational resources. While quantum computing offers potential beyond classical systems, the advantages of quantum neural networks (QNNs) remain largely unexplored. In this work, we present and examine a quantum circuit (QC) that implements and aims to improve upon the classical echo-state network (ESN), a type of reservoir-based recurrent neural networks (RNNs), using quantum computers. Typically, ESNs consist of an extremely large reservoir that learns high-dimensional embeddings, enabling prediction of complex system trajectories. Quantum echo-state networks (QESNs) aim to reduce this need for prohibitively …

Acute liver failure results from severe hepatic injury and can lead to neurological dysfunction known as hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Thrombospondin-1 can contribute to HE by increasing cerebral edema and microglia activation in the azoxymethane (AOM) mouse model. CD47 is a receptor for TSP1 and can directly modulate inflammation in numerous disease states. However, the role of CD47 in the progression of HE is currently unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the role of CD47 in liver and brain pathology in the AOM mouse model of HE. C57Bl/6 or CD47 knockout (CD47−/−) were administered AOM to induce …

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy for neurological disease has gained traction due to stunning advances in capsid evolution for CNS targeting. With AAV brain delivery now in focus, conventional improvements in viral expression vectors offer a complementary route for optimizing gene delivery. We previously introduced a novel AAV gene therapy to slow amyloid aggregation in the brain based on neuronal release of an Aβ sequence variant that inhibited fibrilization of wild-type Aβ. Here we explore three coding elements of the virally delivered DNA plasmid in an effort to maximize the production of therapeutic peptide in the brain. We demonstrate that …

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Research and its dependency upon authority has mostly produced in the modern age a simulacrum for what a true education should entail: an infinite passion for an infinite knowledge that can only really be approached with a desire that resembles something like love. We have to want to learn, to love to learn, to want to dig through the information before us, because we are passionately committed to knowing something in particular, always in an ever-greater particularity, even when we just need to get the general gist of something specific. Where desire ends as a result of touching imposed limits, …
