Course Registration Practices At A Jesuit University: Practicing Critical Hope To Address Barriers To Access And Belonging, Corey Knadler, Laura Diaz Martinez, Annmarie Caño, Kirk R. Anders, Yolanda Gallardo, Nancy L. Staub Dec 2024

Course Registration Practices At A Jesuit University: Practicing Critical Hope To Address Barriers To Access And Belonging, Corey Knadler, Laura Diaz Martinez, Annmarie Caño, Kirk R. Anders, Yolanda Gallardo, Nancy L. Staub

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Solidarity and critical hope support faculty and staff who wish to accompany students, read the current reality of their experience, and imagine new practices that can rectify injustices and promote access and belonging. Here, we describe an example of this praxis by responding to student concerns about injustices in a course registration process. With some exceptions, undergraduates at this institution register for classes according to their earned college credits. At first glance, this meritocratic system shows care to students by recognizing their hard work. However, our analysis shows that it also discriminates against underserved groups of students. Using 10 years …

Cura Communitatis In The Time Of Coronavirus, Jeffrey Labelle Dec 2024

Cura Communitatis In The Time Of Coronavirus, Jeffrey Labelle

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This study conceptualizes cura communitatis as a contemporary bridge between cura personalis and cura apostolica for Jesuit higher educational institutions. A review of related literature suggests this concept as a possible means for Jesuit IHEs to respond to the realities of the coronavirus pandemic and the psychological, social, spiritual, and economic challenges which have resulted from dealing with this global health crisis. The author surfaces the shared desire in AJCU institutions to care for one another and our shared relationships as pilgrims during a global phenomenon that has demanded physical distancing. The study explores the ways in which this desire …

Otra Historia Ignaciana: Incluyendo A Las Mujeres En La Historia De La Misión Jesuita, Julia A. Dowd Dec 2024

Otra Historia Ignaciana: Incluyendo A Las Mujeres En La Historia De La Misión Jesuita, Julia A. Dowd

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Discernir Juntos En Grupos Pequeños, Franck Janin Sj Dec 2024

Discernir Juntos En Grupos Pequeños, Franck Janin Sj

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Embracing Communal Discernment For Synodal Leadership In Jesuit Higher Education, Deogratias Fikiri Sj Dec 2024

Embracing Communal Discernment For Synodal Leadership In Jesuit Higher Education, Deogratias Fikiri Sj

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

This paper proposes a transformative shift in Jesuit higher education leadership by advocating for synodal leadership, a model grounded in Ignatian spirituality and Catholic tradition. In response to the limitations of traditional shared and collegial governance models, which often perpetuate elitism and hinder broad-based participation, this paper highlights the need for a more inclusive and adaptive leadership approach. Synodal leadership, revitalized by Pope Francis, emphasizes active participation, communal discernment, and mutual respect, diverging from hierarchical norms. It fosters a “walking together” ethos, allowing every member’s voice to contribute to a collective vision. By integrating synodal principles with Jesuit values, this …

Teaching Ettingerian Matrixial Theory, R. Michael Fisher Dec 2024

Teaching Ettingerian Matrixial Theory, R. Michael Fisher

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

Utilizing an adapted scoping review of the literature on Bracha L. Ettinger and Education (2008-2024), the author reveals the specific ways that Ettingerian Matrixial Theory (EMT) and its pedagogies are taught and can be taught in the future. EMT is argued to be a new branch of Critical Theory. The current literature shows there is mostly engagement with EMT in academic settings. As well, the literature reviewed shows EMT is used readily in arts and with artists as teachers and teachings for adults. However, the author unveils diverse other possibilities of teaching EMT. A few major themes from the literature …

Weaving Care Threads: Matrixial Encounters In Teacher Professional Learning, Misty Paterson Dec 2024

Weaving Care Threads: Matrixial Encounters In Teacher Professional Learning, Misty Paterson

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

The need for increased care in today’s classrooms is becoming undeniable. Yet, teacher shortages, budget cutbacks, and mental health crises makes injecting care into our field feel evermore demanding and depleting. What if abundant and systemic care was at our fingertips? This article shares the voices and processes of six seasoned, “non-artist” educators as they co-created a learning space that prioritized a relational, social-based, caring sensibility through art-care practices. The author brings the lens of Ettinger's Matrixial Theory to her practitioner inquiry into caring affect through Spontaneous Creation-Making (Bickel & Fisher, 2023) with promising and pragmatic implications for teacher educators.

Gestating And Co-Becoming With Ettingerian Maxtrixial Pedagogy, Barbara Bickel Dec 2024

Gestating And Co-Becoming With Ettingerian Maxtrixial Pedagogy, Barbara Bickel

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article seeks to infuse and enrich the spheres of Arts and Education through a nascent introduction of Ettingerian Matrixial Pedagogy. To articulate this, I weave together the practices of Gestare Art Collective, which we describe as “matrixial infused education,” the “placental thinking” of Nané Jordan with my own thinking, art making and teaching. This article unfolds through interlacing theory and reflections on teachings found within art practices of Ma Poses, Womb Walking, Nap-Ins, and Spontaneous Creation-Making, along with examples of pedagogical artworkings: Metramorphosis and Muted Colours of Grief. The article closes with a poetic métissage inquiry that became—a Matrixial …

A Matrixial Museum: Education In Almost-Impossible Spaces, Valerie Oved Giovanini Dec 2024

A Matrixial Museum: Education In Almost-Impossible Spaces, Valerie Oved Giovanini

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This paper is meant to scaffold an imaginary space for what is currently an almost impossible museum. It would reside on a border between Gaza and Israel. Artists and participants would be able to enter from both sides of the border into a circular and cavernous space to make, share and experience art together. In artwork that values its relational capacity to affect another, the move from aesthetics to ethics recalls our mutual place of origin understood in Bracha L. Ettinger’s Matrixial Theory (EMT) as “the matrixial womb.” Griselda Pollock’s Virtual Feminist Museum, Gur-Ze’ev’s counter-education, feminist pedagogy, and Art-care activism …

She-Hero: A Memoir Of The Divine Feminine Within A Creation-Centred Paradigm, Darlene St.Georges Dec 2024

She-Hero: A Memoir Of The Divine Feminine Within A Creation-Centred Paradigm, Darlene St.Georges

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

She-Hero: A Memoir of the Divine Feminine within a Creation-Centred Paradigm explores Ettinger’s matrixial borderspaces through an inter-woven theoretical | artistic | poetic métissage. An example of creation-centred research, this memoir is likened to Ettinger’s concept of metramorphosis—an active restoration of matrixial knowledge(s) and knowing. Embodying a creation-centred curriculum and pedagogy, She-Hero privileges non-dominant epistemologies to attend to the disruption of historical patterns of the hero—inviting readers to submerge and emerge in co-poesis within an intimate and aesthetic kaleidoscopic space of feminine affect and agency.

Traces Of Communal Touch: Matrixial Encounters With Pre-Service Art Educators Across Two States, Kate L. Wurtzel, Laura L. Mccartney Dec 2024

Traces Of Communal Touch: Matrixial Encounters With Pre-Service Art Educators Across Two States, Kate L. Wurtzel, Laura L. Mccartney

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

The matrixial sphere, as put forth by artist and psychoanalyst Bracha L. Ettinger, is a shared and transsubjective space that is beneath the conscious, under the touchable and perceptible; it is a space where we encounter ourselves and one another in shared trauma, healing, art making, and the lived experience overall. This co-authored essay explores how a shared matrixial space and the matrixial gaze, which is not always visual, have been experienced through the square boxes of ZOOM as part of a collaborative, long-distance art exchange project. The project, focused on Spontaneous Creation-Making (SCM) sessions, as outlined in Barbara Bickel …

Aesthetic Wit(H)Nessing In Times Of Trouble: Propositions For Working Affirmatively With Difference Within Matrixial Pedagogical Practice., Nike Romano

Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal

This article explores how Bracha Ettinger’s notion of matrixial aesthetic wit(h)nessing fosters opportunities for dealing with memory and trauma in classroom encounters during times of trouble. Drawing on my experience of teaching a history of art and design curriculum at a University of Technology in South Africa, the intention is to highlight the crucial role that Ettingerian Matrixial Theory (EMT) plays in building trust in troubled educational spaces. Concerned with the ethical implications of surfacing and transforming traumas, the inquiry begins with a discussion on how South Africa (SA), and SA Higher Education (HE) in particular, are saturated with traumatic …

Examining The Role Of Teacher Beliefs In Evolution Education, Tyler Bayes Dec 2024

Examining The Role Of Teacher Beliefs In Evolution Education, Tyler Bayes

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The effectiveness of evolution education depends on limiting teacher discretion when it conflicts with scientific standards. Schools could mitigate creationist influences by promoting standardized, evidence-based science education while encouraging teachers to adopt neutral stances on non-scientific beliefs in their classrooms.

Science Vs Religion: A Study Of The Noma Model In Relation To Jehovah's Witnesses, Janelle Novotny Dec 2024

Science Vs Religion: A Study Of The Noma Model In Relation To Jehovah's Witnesses, Janelle Novotny

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

My project aims to evaluate the differences in viewpoints between Jehovah’s Witnesses and healthcare workers specifically in their refusal to donate or receive blood products. I believe that this topic can both validate the use of the NOMA principle due to the Jehovah’s Witnesses literal interpretation of certain Bible verses but also demonstrate what a NOMA violation would look like as demonstrated by the ethical, legal, and autonomic conflict shown in the articles in which the wishes of a Jehovah’s Witness to receive blood products and the requirement for the healthcare worker to abide by their wishes and potentially watch …

Human Capital Skills And Industrial Output Growth In Sub-Saharan Africa. An Implication For Human Capital Migration: A Dynamic System Gmm Approach, Keji Sunday

CBER Conference

The extant endogenous theory posits that human capital skill influences industrial output growth. However, evidence from sub-regional blocs in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) suggests otherwise due to diverse human capital skills and output growth patterns across the subregion. This study intends to unravel patterns of migration and human capital skills across ECA ECCAS ECOWAS SADC sub-regions in SSA. What are the interactive effects of migration and human capital skills on industrial output in SSA? Consequently, this study fills vacuums in the literature via a sub-sample analysis to systematically compare the patterns of migration and human capital skills across the SSA’s sub-regions. …
