Juan Mencarini And Amateur Photography In Fin-De-Siècle China, Xavier Ortells-Nicolau
Kritika Kultura
Juan Mencarini Pierotti (1860 – 1939) was a Spanish employee of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service of China from 1881 to 1912 and later a businessman in the import-export sector with base in Shanghai. Parallel to his professional career, Mencarini pioneered in the history of postage stamps in East Asia, contributed to learned societies with articles and lectures, and was reputed among the foreign community of the treaty ports as an accomplished amateur pictorialist photographer. Based on previously unexamined repositories, contemporary press records, and the cataloguing and analysis of over two hundred photographs, this paper analyzes Mencarini’s preserved corpus of …
Wrestling With Or Embracing Digitization In The Music Industry: The Contrasting Business Strategies Of J-Pop And K-Pop, Jimmyn Parc, Nobuko Kawashima
Wrestling With Or Embracing Digitization In The Music Industry: The Contrasting Business Strategies Of J-Pop And K-Pop, Jimmyn Parc, Nobuko Kawashima
Kritika Kultura
Digitization has significantly changed the process for producing and consuming music: from analogue to digital, albums to songs, possess to access, audio to visual, and end products to promotional products. In this globalized digital era, actively embracing digitization would likely help enhance the competitiveness of the music industry. The rise of K-pop and the decline of J-pop clearly demonstrate the different results from whether to embrace or wrestle with digitization. The Korean music industry recognized changes brought on by digitization earlier and was more active in responding with effective strategies. By contrast, the Japanese music industry did not immediately respond …
Where Is 'East Of Eden'?: The Politics Of Steinbeck's Literary Reputation In Slovenia, Danica Čerče
Where Is 'East Of Eden'?: The Politics Of Steinbeck's Literary Reputation In Slovenia, Danica Čerče
Kritika Kultura
Katherine Arens maintains that literary texts or authors can function as prototypes for their speech genres within literary history and in a cultural community. Until very recently, in Slovenia, John Steinbeck has been regarded primarily as an objective social chronicler of the Great Depression. This popular critical view, earned with his “labor trilogy,” The Grapes of Wrath, In Dubious Battle, and Of Mice and Men, is needlessly limiting, given that Steinbeck’s literary achivements extend well beyond the modes and methods of traditional realism or documentary representation. Written against the background of the critical discourse regarding the political implications of literary …

A Framework For Strengthening The Quantitative Skills/Reasoning Support Ecosystem At Small Liberal Arts Colleges, Laura J. Muller, Melissa Eblen-Zayas Ph.D.
A Framework For Strengthening The Quantitative Skills/Reasoning Support Ecosystem At Small Liberal Arts Colleges, Laura J. Muller, Melissa Eblen-Zayas Ph.D.
Numeracy
We developed a framework for characterizing an institution’s quantitative skills/reasoning support ecosystem to consider how various activities contribute to student success in areas connected to students’ quantitative preparation. Through discussions with faculty and staff stakeholders at eight selective small liberal arts colleges, we established that the quantitative skills/reasoning support ecosystem at these institutions consists of four domains: bridge programs with a quantitative component, assessment of readiness, curricular on-ramps, and supplementary support for courses that require quantitative skills/reasoning. The framework includes questions about each domain that can be used by stakeholders in different institutional positions to reflect on existing efforts to …

To Book Or Not To Book: A Case Analysis Of The Mydisney Experience Mobile Application And The Future Of Consumer Engagement, Cody T. Havard
Findings in Sport, Hospitality, Entertainment, and Event Management
As more participatory services lean heavily into the use of mobile applications to engage consumers, it has become increasingly important to gain a better understanding of such amenities. The current case analysis discusses the use of the MyDisney Experience mobile application in the fall of 2024. The case analysis uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate how the application added to and subtracted from the user experience. Implications and future directions of research are discussed.
Star-Studded Stingers: Fluorescent Sensilla On The Scorpion Aculeus (Arachnida: Scorpiones), Graeme Lowe
Star-Studded Stingers: Fluorescent Sensilla On The Scorpion Aculeus (Arachnida: Scorpiones), Graeme Lowe
Euscorpius
The aculeus of the scorpion telson was studied by UV fluorescence microscopy. Numerous brightly fluorescent punctae were observed on the non-fluorescent distal aculeus, including the tip region. The punctae were identified as aculear sensilla coeloconica (ASC), and were connected to fluorescent canals running through the cuticle. ASC were present in both sexes, and in adults and immatures as early as the second juvenile instar, but were absent from the first instar. The distal aculeus was found to be encased in a thick, non-fluorescent dark exocuticle (DX), covering an underlying thin, fluorescent hyaline exocuticle (HX). Fluorescent ASC were recorded from 183 …

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
This Will Not Be Generative by Dixa Ramírez-D’Oleo critiques Western feminist narratives, revealing how concepts like generativity and symbiosis often disguise violence against Black and Indigenous communities. Through analysis of works by feminists such as Donna Haraway and references to films like Get Out and Midsommar, Ramírez-D’Oleo argues that Black and Indigenous lives are cyclically exploited to uphold white supremacy. Rather than depicting these communities as mere victims, she emphasizes their resilience and acts of resistance. This review underscores Ramírez-D’Oleo's call to rethink the narratives shaping our understanding of race, ecology, and feminism, making it a critical read for …

Penetrating The Academic Echo Chamber Through Podcasting, David A. Wilson Phd
Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
The scope and breadth of the content of college courses is often limited to the students who attend them. This is particularly true regarding theoretical courses, such as those involving theories and practices related to bilingual education. A new podcast created by an instructor of such a course aims to expand the reach of the course content to other students, educators, and the general public, who may not have taken such courses. This opinion piece addresses how the podcast came into being, as well as its current and future goals.

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education
In good faith, we are proud to publish this very short issue this month, containing this editorial explanation and with an invitation to submit articles, essays, artistic works, book reviews, and more. It would also be excellent for those who are interested in this project aimed at continuing to make space for critical social justice work to sign up to review and provide feedback and response to authors. The issue also has an excellent essay about language work and the revitalizing it through podcasting with Dr. David A. Wilson and a book review of This Will Not Be Generative by …

Beyond Visual Limits: Systems Thinking For The Visually Impaired Using Generative Ai, Allie Zombron, Raafat Zaini, Arwa Alnajashi
International Journal on Responsibility
This paper investigates the responsible application of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance accessibility in STEM education. It presents a proof of concept to generate descriptions of visual representations of Systems Thinking (Meadows, 2009), a discipline that is challenging for individuals with visual impairments. By adhering to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (The Americans with Disabilities Act, 2024) guidelines and leveraging AI, this initiative aims to facilitate comprehension of complex systems. It underscores the ethical imperative of inclusivity in educational technology. Developing AI-driven tools to describe System Dynamics showcases a commitment to ethical AI deployment, promoting equitable access …

Research in progress for CRIJ 1301: Introduction to Criminal Justice
Faculty Mentor: Stefanie LeMaire
This manuscript began from a response to a discussion prompt in my Introduction to Criminal Justice course where students were asked to discuss some of the issues facing inmates upon release from incarceration. Tristan completed outside research on the relationship between education and recidivism among incarcerated individuals. More specifically, she wanted to discuss the barriers to successful reintegration and programs that have been introduced to address these concerns. Most offenders will be released from incarceration, and they will reenter our society. There is a …

MAGIS: Student Development Journal
Research has addressed how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or queer (LGBQ) student identity development is largely shaped by external factors such as perceptions of campus support and inclusivity (Schmidt, Miles, & Welsh, 2011; Swank & Fahs, 2012; Tomlinson & Fassinger, 2003). In addition, literature has illustrated a positive correlation among student leaders involved in identity-based organizations and activities that entice self-authorship, meaning making, and leadership development (Renn, 2007; Renn & Bilodeau, 2005). However, there is a finite amount of research focused on leadership and identity development among queer- identified students’ involvement in non-queer specific activities. Among best practices in student affairs, …

A heightened consciousness of racial injustice across higher education and an increasingly diverse student population have pushed institutions to consider how they are responding to these changes. An emerging solution has been to establish a Chief Diversity Officer to address issues of racial climate on college campuses. This article analyzes the current literature on Chief Diversity Officers in higher education in order to describe the key roles and challenges of the position. Recommendations for institutions and executive leadership are provided to design and implement a position with the organizational structure and power to serve the needs of diverse student populations …
