The Moderating Effect Of Life History Strategies On The Relationship Between Dark Triad Traits And Delayed Gratification, Jisook Park, Whitney Whitaker, Sydney Hicks
The Moderating Effect Of Life History Strategies On The Relationship Between Dark Triad Traits And Delayed Gratification, Jisook Park, Whitney Whitaker, Sydney Hicks
Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research
Dark Triad (DT) traits are often used to account for individuals’ impulsivity and inability to delay gratification, postponing an immediate reward to receive a greater outcome at a later time. Life-history theory (LHT) provides additional theoretical framework to understand our choices related to delayed gratification. LHT posits individuals develop life-history strategies (LHS) shaped by their environmental cues. Individuals using slow LHS are believed to invest more in maturation in life whereas those with fast LHS prefer immediate rewards. Despite insights shared from past studies on DT and delayed gratification, inconsistencies in findings remain. The goal of the current study is …
A Rank-Order Alternative For Non-Parametric Analysis With The General Linear Model, Jeffry White
A Rank-Order Alternative For Non-Parametric Analysis With The General Linear Model, Jeffry White
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Violations of normality and homogeneity are common in educational data. When this occurs, the use of parametric statistics may be inappropriate. A generalized form of nonparametric analyses based on the Puri and Sen L statistic provides an alternative approach. Using a chi-square distribution, this technique is easy to apply and has significant power. Another advantage of the L statistic is its utility to link nonparametric tests with their parametric counterparts. After rank-ordering and analyzing the data, an adjustment is made by calculating L instead of relying on the parametric test statistic. This permits the researcher to choose between parallel strategies …

Exploring Dalit Representation In The Federal Government Of Nepal: A Sociological Perspective On Decision-Making Dynamics, Makar Bahadur Sarki
Transformations
Dalit Representation in the Federal Government of Nepal is the main problem now. The Dalit members of parliament of each party are struggling to participate in the Government’s Cabinet. All Governments of Nepal are ignoring to ensure the Dalit representation in the cabinet. Although the constitution of Nepal adopted the inclusive principle, it does not implement in the cabinet of the Federal Government of Nepal. Dalit members of parliament face opportunities loss in each cabinet of Nepal Government. But it is gaps in research till now. What is the reason behind it not implementing the legal provision? Is it human …
Efficient Flush/Re-Initalize Signaling For Rans States, Simon Schmidt
Efficient Flush/Re-Initalize Signaling For Rans States, Simon Schmidt
Defensive Publications Series
Asymmetric Numeral Systems (ANS) have the distinct disadvantage, that they have to be encoded in reverse order. In rANS, adaptive rANS specifically, this is often alleviated by buffering the coding decisions and flushing it in the end, resitting the rANS state every time. The decoder has to know, when to flush/re-initialize the state of the rANS decoder. This disclosure describes a method for selectively flushing (or retaining) the state of the rANS decoder on a symbol-by-symbol base. After renormalization, the decoder checks, if the value of the state of the rANS decoder is equal to the constant, whith which the …

Landlessness, War, And Displacement In Literatures Of Mindanao And Sulu, Sherwin Mendoza
Kritika Kultura
This monograph attempts to clarify the relationships of Filipino Americans to the diaspora of Christian settler colonists in Mindanao with the hope of facilitating solidarity between Filipino Americans and the peoples of Mindanao and Sulu. It begins with a consideration of Carlos Bulosan, perhaps the most prominent figure within the discipline of Filipino American Studies, in terms of the brief appearance of Mindanao in America is in the Heart. The bulk of the monograph, however, is centered on literatures of the Southern Philippines, a region that is often overlooked within the discipline of Filipino American Studies, and in particular it …

The Alien, The Citizen, And The Triumphant Capitalist, Gloria G. Gonzales
The Alien, The Citizen, And The Triumphant Capitalist, Gloria G. Gonzales
Kritika Kultura
This paper examines notions of the “alien” and the “citizen” or the outsider and insider based on the Chinese Filipino experience as portrayed in Charlson Ong’s novel Banyaga: The Song of War (2006). Although the Chinese have lived in the Philippine archipelago since the twelfth century, they have always been considered banyaga (alien or foreigner) by Filipino “natives.” I argue that the marginalization of the Chinese has led them to specialization in trade and commerce, which in turn has steered them, paradoxically, towards exceptionalism. As such, I correlate Ong’s banyaga with Georg Simmel’s concept of the stranger and argue that …

In 2004, the author flew to New York to spend a few days with fans of Nora Aunor during the Philippine Superstar’s U.S. concert tour. This personal essay is a ruminative account of a wayfaring trip that began the year before, when the author flew to Manila and met the star for the first time. It’s a pilgrimage of sorts, tracking the wandering icon in Manhattan, from her hotel bedroom to Times Square all the way to the airport. It crosses time and space from aquatic Bicol and Atlantic City to the mystical Byzantine age and the tumultuous years of …
Si Judy Ann Santos At Ang Wika Ng Teleserye, Louie Jon A. Sánchez
Si Judy Ann Santos At Ang Wika Ng Teleserye, Louie Jon A. Sánchez
Kritika Kultura
The actress Judy Ann Santos boasts of an illustrious and sterling career in Philippine show business, and is widely considered the “queen” of the teleserye, the Filipino soap opera. In the manner of Barthes, this paper explores this queenship, so-called, by way of traversing through Santos’ acting history, which may be read as having founded the language, the grammar of the said televisual dramatic genre. The paper will focus, primarily, on her oeuvre of soap operas, and would consequently delve into her other interventions in film, illustrating not only how her career was shaped by the dramatic genre, pre- and …

Dulsita, Ang Kabuuan Ng Kontradiksyon Ng Imahen Ni Sharon Cuneta Sa Pelikulang Pilipino, Jerrick Josue David
Kritika Kultura
Rolando B. Tolentino described Sharon Cuneta as the “perpetual virgin” of Philippine movies. In his essay titled “Si Sharon Cuneta at ang Perpetwal na Birhen” [Sharon Cuneta and the Perpetual Virgin], Tolentino described the perpetual virgin as eternally “meek, subservient, patient, the proverbial model of kindness and/or goodness.” Such characteristic is exemplified via the typical role Cuneta plays onscreen: the good-hearted woman who chooses to forgive her oppressor(s) despite the hardships she endured in their hands. Offscreen, she seems to epitomize such an image: loving and dutiful daughter to her parents, martyr wife to her philandering first husband, devoted wife …

Fall Of Grace: Nora Aunor As Cinema, Patrick D. Flores
Fall Of Grace: Nora Aunor As Cinema, Patrick D. Flores
Kritika Kultura
Nora Aunor is enlisted in this speculation as a medium in the register of both the cinema and the transmission of spirit. The key trajectory is the oft-cited film Himala, which opens up a conceptual space for mediumship, the technology of the actress, her biography and corpus of art, and the devotion to her person. The essay constellates a set of texts including the sculpture in honor of Elsa, the main character of Himala, the film Silip, and the life of a fan. Nora, the performative vessel of Elsa, becomes fundamentally cinematic. It is through her that Elsa is fleshed …
