Accumulated And Accumulable Cultures: The Case Of Public And Private Initiatives Toward K-Pop, Jimmyn Parc, Hwy-Chang Moon
Accumulated And Accumulable Cultures: The Case Of Public And Private Initiatives Toward K-Pop, Jimmyn Parc, Hwy-Chang Moon
Kritika Kultura
When it comes to the promotion of culture, many tend to highlight the vital role of public initiatives. This idea is based on the common perception that culture is part of the nation- state. This belief also stems from the confusion between two types of culture. To address such misperceptions, this paper emphasizes a distinction between accumulated and accumulable cultures: The former is associated with the nation-state and local conditions. Given that it has formed over a long period of time with the accumulation of related cultural practices, the need to protect it is strong. On the other hand, accumulable …
The Next Growth Strategy For Hallyu: A Comparative Analysis Of Global Entertainment Firms, Yeon W. Lee, Kyuchan Kim
The Next Growth Strategy For Hallyu: A Comparative Analysis Of Global Entertainment Firms, Yeon W. Lee, Kyuchan Kim
Kritika Kultura
Previous policy approaches on Hallyu have been focused on the role of government engagement, particularly in fostering diversity and equal business opportunities for small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs). However, a more strategic approach to the cultural industries should be implemented by carefully examining the role of the private sector, particularly the role of large enterprises (LEs). This is important because LEs have an overarching and fundamentally differentiated role in increasing the size of industry through their expansive value-creating activities and diversified business areas. This study focuses on the complementary roles of SMEs and LEs in facilitating the growth of Hallyu by bringing …
Hallyuwood: Korea's Comparative Advantage In The Global Motion Picture Industry, Sébastien Miroudot
Hallyuwood: Korea's Comparative Advantage In The Global Motion Picture Industry, Sébastien Miroudot
Kritika Kultura
After Hollywood and Bollywood, the recent success of the Korean motion picture industry has been described as the rise of “Hallyuwood,” suggesting that Korea has become the third pillar of the global motion picture industry. In order to explain the emergence of Hallyuwood, this paper uses a global value chain (GVC) approach and highlights some of the economic determinants in the internationalization of the Korean movie industry. Using input-output data and firm-level information, the paper first analyzes the position of Korea in the motion picture GVC and assesses the ways in which the movie production has become more global. The …
Adapting To Technological Changes In The Music Business: The Case Of The British Music Industry And New Record Formats In The 1950s, Stephen Ranger
Adapting To Technological Changes In The Music Business: The Case Of The British Music Industry And New Record Formats In The 1950s, Stephen Ranger
Kritika Kultura
Technological changes have had a major impact on music industries across all areas of business, ranging from production to distribution. When looking at the history of emerging music industries, it is evident that those who have effectively adapted to new technological changes have been able to achieve significant and meaningful success. This is clearly the case with the British music industry during the emergence of rock and roll from the 1950s to the 1960s. This paper examines how EMI, the leading British music company, responded to changes in record formats in the 1950s. A form of new technological development at …
Between Technological Advancement And Protectionism: The Bumpy Evolution From Mp3 Players To Smartphones In Korea, Jimmyn Parc
Between Technological Advancement And Protectionism: The Bumpy Evolution From Mp3 Players To Smartphones In Korea, Jimmyn Parc
Kritika Kultura
In recent years, K-pop or Korean popular songs have enjoyed immense popularity around the world. However, the situation was very different before the mid-2000s when the industry was suffering from widespread piracy of its music. Furthermore, the emergence of the MP3 phone in the early 2000s provoked two critical conflicts. One was between the producers of the MP3 phone who were large conglomerates and the manufacturers of the standalone MP3 player who were smaller companies that feared for their future. The other conflict was between the producers of the MP3 phone and the Korean music industry who believed this new …

The Female Monster: The Pre-Catholic Manifestation As A Response To Modern Anxiety In Selected Stories By Nick Joaquin, Tyra Delos Reyes, Xavier Selman
Kritika Kultura
Scholarship on the writings of Nick Joaquin have mostly concerned themselves with either their postcolonial resonances or the gender politics abound in the text. Tropical Gothic (1972) is widely read as an ambiguous approach toward feminism because of the depiction of the female as monstrous which has been argued to problematize its feminist possibilities, whether this depiction empowers or suppresses women in the texts. Examining the criticism of Marie Arong, Philip Holden, and Epifanio San Juan Jr., this paper asserts how existing notions of gender are able to produce a more nuanced reading of Nick Joaquin’s selected stories, specifically “Summer …

Ilustraxon: Semyotika Sa Pahina At Sa Piraso Ng Komix, Arbeen R. Acuña
Kritika Kultura
When She Started Acting Queer: A Queer Gothic Reading Of Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Miguel Antonio N. Lizada
When She Started Acting Queer: A Queer Gothic Reading Of Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Miguel Antonio N. Lizada
Kritika Kultura
This essay reads Nick Joaquin’s The Woman Who Had Two Navels using the critical templates gleaned from gothic studies and queer theory. The essay explores the idea of doubling and monstrosity and demonstrates how these two gothic tropes are deployed to activate the queer potential found in the character of Connie Escobar. The essay builds on an existing interpretation of the novel—that the narrative is an account of regeneration—and extends this by arguing that this narrative of transformation is mobilized precisely by a rejection of heteropatriarchal narratives encoded in the novel’s postcolonial world, mobilized in a particular way by the …
Temporality In Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Marie Rose Arong
Temporality In Nick Joaquin's The Woman Who Had Two Navels, Marie Rose Arong
Kritika Kultura
Nick Joaquin has been read as nostalgic of Filipino Hispanic culture. While it’s true that most of Joaquin’s works deal with the country’s Hispanic past, his works account for more than just nostalgia. A lot of studies that make use of postcolonial theory show how this Filipino Hispanic culture as depicted in Joaquin’s works can be construed as a form of resistance against US neocolonialism, on one hand, and nativist nationalism, on another. Using postcolonial and narrative theories, this paper argues that Joaquin’s The Woman Who Had Two Navels should also be read as a strategy for resisting US neocolonialism …
Bedeviling Quijano De Manila's Discourses Of The Devil's Advocate And The Openness Of Historical Interpretation, Ivan Emil Labayne
Bedeviling Quijano De Manila's Discourses Of The Devil's Advocate And The Openness Of Historical Interpretation, Ivan Emil Labayne
Kritika Kultura
Using a Marxist framework, this paper looks at Nick Joaquin’s conduct of history writing and uses this analysis to comment on the general practice of writing on history. The paper first assesses the extent by which a strand of dialectical thought operates in Discourses. Second, typical assertions of history as “narrativized” discourse are put into test. The ideas of Linda Hutcheon and Edel Garcellano are utilized to bring in the larger sociality where textual discourses take place, thereby shunning the supposed primacy of texts and positing the dynamic ties between history writing and society. Third, the relationship between oral and …

Introduction: Nick Joaquin Now: Texts, Contexts, And Approaches, Gary Devilles, Jocelyn Martin
Kritika Kultura
This Introduction to “Nick Joaquin Now: Texts, Contexts and Approaches” surveys the main critical works on Nick Joaquin’s oeuvre and presents an overview of the essays included in this Forum Kritika. Following the contributions of scholars such as Blanco, E. San Juan, Galdon, Gutierrez, Hau, Holden, Patke, Pison, and Serrano, this new collection of essays reveals novel readers and (re)readings of Joaquin. The editors treat Joaquin “not as an object of study but more as an effect to be explained, where we as ‘readers’ become the implied readers that Joaquin’s works requires.” Following Nick Joaquin’s centennial, marked by, among others, …

Reading Carlos Bulosan/Documenting The Filipino Diaspora: An Editorial Introduction To Writer In Exile/Writer In Revolt: Critical Perspectives On Carlos Bulosan, Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao
Kritika Kultura
This editorial introduction to Writer in Exile/Writer in Revolt: Critical Perspectives on Carlos Bulosan (2016) sheds light on the diasporic scope of Bulosan’s literary imagination and the literary scholarship on his diverse body of writing. Writer in Exile/Writer in Revolt gathers for the first time nearly sixty years of literary criticism by scholars in the United States and the Philippines on Bulosan, a pioneering twentieth-century Filipino writer in the United States. The editorial introduction highlights the ways in which Writer in Exile/Writer in Revolt documents the unfolding of Bulosan’s radical literary imagination which straddles the colonial and neocolonial periods of …
Cultural Capital And The Tale Of Two Lu Xuns, Yang Ke
Cultural Capital And The Tale Of Two Lu Xuns, Yang Ke
Kritika Kultura
Historically, Lu Xun’s canonical status in China had been used for purposes other than strictly or specifically “literary,” although the aesthetic merits of his works remain indisputable even from the broader perspective of World Literature today. Nonetheless, such uses, which this study refers to as “cultural capital,” have brought about certain inconsistencies and contradictions in the evaluation of his works. In order to survey the complex and shifting history of reception to Lu Xun’s works, this paper attempts to explain the contextual determinations of his canonicity from the rise of vernacular literature in 1917 in China and his use of …
Pelikulang Komiks: Toward A Theory Of Filipino Film Adaptation, Joyce L. Arriola
Pelikulang Komiks: Toward A Theory Of Filipino Film Adaptation, Joyce L. Arriola
Kritika Kultura
This paper tackles the major assumptions of a proposed/emergent Filipino komiks-to-film adaptation theory based on archival texts from the 1950s. An inventory of extant texts has led to the identification of twelve komiks-to-film adaptations representing Filipinized genres such as the korido film, fantasy/folklore, family drama, woman’s film, personality comedy, and historical film. Textual analysis of uncovered texts has been complemented by a social film history based on unstructured interviews with ten komiks and film scholars and retrieval of archival film journalism pieces. The main concern of this paper is to present the concepts and assumptions about komiks-to-film adaptation that will …
The Construction Of Modernity In Pre-Independent Indonesia And Its Ensuing Manifestation In Critical Discourse And Literary Theory, Paulus Sarwoto
The Construction Of Modernity In Pre-Independent Indonesia And Its Ensuing Manifestation In Critical Discourse And Literary Theory, Paulus Sarwoto
Kritika Kultura
This article traces the development of what may be called Indonesian critical discourse particularly related to the position of “West” and “East” from the colonial period to the New Order era. The development of this discourse and its manifestation in Indonesian literary theory began with a postcolonial debate on the construction of Indonesian modernity, i.e., toward which center it is going to be oriented. The tension between Western-centric discourse, on the one hand, and traditional orientation, on the other, characterized the earliest intellectual debate in the 1930s. This argument took a different contour in the 1960s when the tension turned …
Critical Crossings: Hybridity's Fissures And Ruptures, Maria Luisa Torres Reyes
Critical Crossings: Hybridity's Fissures And Ruptures, Maria Luisa Torres Reyes
Kritika Kultura
The papers in this special section at once undertake and undermine the discourse of hybridity, at once to recognize the strength of its rhetorical force and critique the limits of its explanatory power. Rather than viewing hybridity as a kind of floating signifier in all its ambivalence as many postcolonial studies have been noted to have undertaken, the papers explore its conditions of possibility in the context of the materiality of the historical situation and specifically in the concreteness of the authors’ inscription in history and the worldly particularity of literature, literary form, and criticism. As a category, for a …
Im Hwa, Hybridity, And The Anti-Colonial Politics Of Modern Korean Literature, Jinhyoung Lee
Im Hwa, Hybridity, And The Anti-Colonial Politics Of Modern Korean Literature, Jinhyoung Lee
Kritika Kultura
This paper deals with the hybridity of modern Korean literature as it tries to explain its anti- colonial politics by focusing on the exposition of Joseon literary history and the discourse of the “serious novel” in the late colonial era by Im Hwa, who is considered as one of the foremost critics of modern Korean literature. Im Hwa characterized modern Joseon literature as the result of the hybridization of pre-modern Joseon literature and modern Western literature, thereby devaluing the perceived influence of Japanese literature on modern Joseon literature. This idea was premised on his assumption that the tradition of modern …
Culture As Contradiction In Urban Regeneration: Sanitization, Commodification, And Critical Resistance In Liverpool One, Niamh Malone
Culture As Contradiction In Urban Regeneration: Sanitization, Commodification, And Critical Resistance In Liverpool One, Niamh Malone
Kritika Kultura
This essay uses critiques of the homogenization of urban regeneration practices over recent decades to examine Liverpool ONE (L1), a privately owned, open-air retail development in the center of the historic city. The argument considers the role of a particular concept of culture in enabling major projects, which frequently involve the conversion of public resources into private assets, to be projected in a benign light. Countering this trend is a core mission for New York-based activist artist, Reverend Billy and his Church of Stop Shopping Choir; an inspiration to young artists in Liverpool. Since opening, L1 has functioned as a …

Transforming Theater For The Oppressed: Community Theater As Urban Poor Discourse In Sining Kadamay's Gapok, Michael D. Pante, Leo Angelo Nery
Kritika Kultura
In March 2017, the issue of urban poor housing was exposed on a national scale when thousands of members of the urban poor group Kadamay forcibly occupied nearly 6,000 abandoned housing units meant for members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police in Pandi, Bulacan. Kadamay members were accused of being mendicant anarchists by their critics, while their supporters lauded their determination in demanding, and winning, their rights to housing. While the issue polarized Philippine society, it is evident that the Occupy Pandi movement revitalized urban poor discourse, and brought back to the fore the …
Disobedient Cultures: Art, Politics, And Resurgent Hope, Malcom Miles
Disobedient Cultures: Art, Politics, And Resurgent Hope, Malcom Miles
Kritika Kultura
When political change is remote the only prospect for change is in the realm of imagination. Herbert Marcuse responds to this in his last book, The Aesthetic Dimension (1978) after the failure of revolt in Paris in 1968. He argues that although art cannot change the world as such it can change how the world is apprehended. Thus art’s imaginative potential is part of a wider pursuit of freedom. The paper argues that the situation is bleaker today than in the 1970s. Neoliberalism enforces a regime of consumerism even more now than then, and operates globally. Still, hope reappears in …
We The Divided: Partitions Of Performance In The Ceramic State, Alan Read
We The Divided: Partitions Of Performance In The Ceramic State, Alan Read
Kritika Kultura
The common association between theater and community is here inverted to explore the relationship between theatrical practice and immunity, or “affects of adjustment” between spectator and event. Drawing upon Roberto Esposito’s figuring of relations between community and immunity, on Jacques Ranciere’s propositions of the “emancipated spectator” and the part of those who have no part,” and Gerald Raunig’s conception of “Division” from his work on the Dividuum (2016), this essay examines a sequence of case studies central to the author’s own practiced experiences: Rotherhithe Theatre Workshop in the 1980s, Transhumance in the 1990s, and the Performance Biennial Athens in 2016. …

Provocation: Athens, A Work-In-Progress, Stephe Harrop
Kritika Kultura
This provocation contests the familiar construction of classical Athens as an ideal exemplar of democratic politics through a focus on the city’s material fabric, its visual artworks, and the performances which took place within its public spaces. It highlights the city’s ongoing process of material re-building (particularly following the Persian invasion of 480 BCE), during which process many of its old artworks were appropriated or re-purposed to express democratic aspirations and anxieties. It also foregrounds the ongoing tensions given articulation through the city’s new showpiece building projects and performance events, including theatrical tragedy and comedy. The aim, throughout, is to …

Athens' Shadows, Victor Merriman
Kritika Kultura
This introductory essay attempts to communicate a sense of the articles and artist pages published in this Forum Kritika on Radical Cultural Responses to Crises in Urban Democracy, in the context of a symposium during which some of them were first argued. The contributors theorize relationships between art and protest, and the nature of performance, as well as critiquing interventionist performance projects, among dispatches from the front line of performance as public engagement. It also seeks to convey a sense of how culture—and especially performance—interacts, in Britain, with Project Austerity (2010-present). As culture and cultural workers, respond to neoliberalization, they …
