Diarylethenes (DAEs) are an important class of photoswitchable compounds that typically undergo reversible photochemical conversions between the open and closed cyclized forms upon treatment with UV light or visible light. In this study, we introduced thioacid functional groups to several photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) derivatives and established a method that can be used to prepare these photoswitchable thioacids. Four thioacid-functionalized diarylethene derivatives were synthesized through the activation of carboxylic acids with N-hydroxysuccinimide, followed by reactions with sodium hydrosulfide with yields over 90%. These derivatives exhibited reversible photoswitching and photochromic properties upon treatment with ultraviolet (UV) and visible lights. The thioacid groups …

In this study, reproducible label-free detection and quantification of the antiretroviral drug emtricitabine (FTC) down to 78 ng/mL in human plasma by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is presented. A novel plasma sample pretreatment method using silver nitrate and silver colloidal nanoparticles (Ag CNPs) was used to prepare the plasma samples for analysis. The pretreated plasma samples were evaporated to dryness on an aluminum surface and a computer-controlled Raman scanning system was used to collect spatially resolved SERS spectra of the entire surface. Calibration curves of commercial human plasma samples containing FTC in a concentration range of 5000 to 78 …
A Structure From Motion Photogrammetric Method For Continuously Measuring And Tracking The Deformations Of Soils During Triaxial Testing, Xiaolong Xia
Doctoral Dissertations
"Measuring soil deformation characteristics during triaxial testing is an important part of characterizing the stress-strain behavior of both saturated and unsaturated soils. The total and local deformations and volume changes of a soil specimen are indispensable parameters that need to be measured and are of great significance for understanding volume change and shear strength characteristics of the soil. Over the past several decades, numerous efforts have been made to measure the soil deformations during triaxial testing. However, it remains a great challenge for researchers to measure the volume-changes of unsaturated soils due to the existence of the air phase.

Comprehensive Investigation Of Using Tire-Derived Aggregate In Chip Seal Subjected To Various Traffic And Environmental Conditions, Alireza Pourhassan
Comprehensive Investigation Of Using Tire-Derived Aggregate In Chip Seal Subjected To Various Traffic And Environmental Conditions, Alireza Pourhassan
Doctoral Dissertations
"Chip seal is one of the most cost- and performance-effective pavement preservation treatments commonly used in the United States. Using crumb rubber obtained from scrap tires as a partial or full replacement for mineral aggregate has been proposed as a sustainable solution to reduce the negative environmental impacts of scrap tire accumulation and excessive consumption of natural resources. However, there was no data available regarding the performance of rubberized chip seal under traffic loads and environmental conditions. An extensive study using laboratory specimens and conditioning as well as field implementation and assessments were conducted to bridge this gap. Different traffic …

"Iron-oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposits are poorly understood mineral systems. For example, we do not know why Cu- and Co-rich IOCG deposits typically occur proximal to Fe ore deposits that are notably Cu and Co-poor, such as Iron Oxide Apatite (IOA) deposits. To better understand the formation of IOA and IOCG deposits in Missouri, USA, this PhD thesis examines the genesis of the Kratz Spring IOA and the Boss Central Dome IOCG deposits. This study presents the first constraints on formation conditions and fluid sources in the studied deposits using integrated petrographic, mineral composition, and Fe isotope analyses of oxide minerals. Observations …

Novel Uses Of Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing For Geo-Mechanical Monitoring, Samuel Vincent Nowak
Doctoral Dissertations
"Rock mass monitoring in underground excavations is crucial for ensuring workplace safety and efficiency. As mines become deeper and more complex, the need to monitor larger volumes of rock during mining becomes impractical with existing instruments due to high costs. Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing (DOFS) is a powerful technology with advantages like long sensor length, real-time measurement capabilities, ease of installation, low cost, and distributed measurement. However, its application in rock mass monitoring is limited, especially in the mining industry. This study addresses a major gap in DOFS technology, specifically the inability of long-range distributed optical fiber strain sensors to …
Monitoring And Control Of Coal Dust Exposure Using Low-Cost Pm Sensors And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Nana Kobina Amoako Amoah
Monitoring And Control Of Coal Dust Exposure Using Low-Cost Pm Sensors And Computational Fluid Dynamics, Nana Kobina Amoako Amoah
Doctoral Dissertations
"Overexposure to respirable coal mine dust has been linked to causing serious health problems including coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and chronic massive fibrosis. The prevalence of these health problems has been on the increase since the 2000s due to increased exposure levels with roof bolter operators having the highest exposure levels. The currently used PDM3700 is too expensive, heavy and bulky which limits their use only for regulatory monitoring failing to measure miners’ personal exposure levels. Also, since roof bolter operators are more prone to elevated coal dust levels, the canopy air curtain (CAC) was developed to protect then high …

"Healthcare systems engineering is challenging due to the complexity, geographic expansiveness, inertial properties, and the heterogeneous sub-systems, with varying vested interests. Additionally, humans comprise many of the forms and functions, and are independent, with resistance and uncertainty in their decision-making that adds complexity. Human-centered systems modeling approaches are therefore needed to capture this unique aspect of a healthcare system and to enhance understanding of emergent healthcare properties. This dissertation focuses on integrating systems modeling within healthcare and emphasizes the importance of incorporating human decision-making. Moreover, the incorporation of a human-centered approach yields particularly valuable insights into the decision-making processes that …
The Comprehensive Study Of High Viscosity Friction Reducers In High-Tds And High-Temperature Environments, Xiaojing Ge
The Comprehensive Study Of High Viscosity Friction Reducers In High-Tds And High-Temperature Environments, Xiaojing Ge
Doctoral Dissertations
"High viscosity friction reducers (HVFRs) have been recently gaining more attention and increasing in use, not only as friction-reducing agents but also as proppant carriers. Reusing of produced water has also been driven by both environmental and economic benefits. Currently, most friction reducers on the market are anionic friction reducers, which are fully compatible with most produced water with low to medium level of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) but show a significant drop at high TDS conditions in term of their friction reduction performance in most cases. On the contrary, cationic friction reducers are believed to have better TDS tolerance …

Experimental Investigation Of High-Temperature Brine-Shale Interactions, Anna Atasha Hoffmann
Doctoral Dissertations
"Hydrofracturing (fracking), a common practice in the Petroleum Industry to induce or improve fluid flow in tight formations, creates chemical disequilibrium that further alters the porosity and permeability of host rocks and results in the production of saline and contaminated produced waters (PW). The PW of the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale (TMS) are Na-Ca-Mg-K-Cl brines with mean concentrations of approximately 16% Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and circumneutral pH. Analysis of composition suggests the PW result from a 20 to 80% dilution of formation waters (relict brines of the Louann Salt) by fracking fluid. Trace element concentrations generally show moderate to strong …

Advanced Mass Spectrometry Method Development And Applications For Assessment Of Traumatic Brain Injury And Legionella Pneumophila Dissinfection With Copper, Austin Chase Sigler
Doctoral Dissertations
"Pathological processes often involve complex biochemical changes which can be assessed using advanced mass spectrometry. In this present dissertation, two fields were studied: traumatic brain injury (TBI), and water contamination by L. pneumophilia. TBI is a pressing public health concern for which current clinical tools remain inadequate. We present newly developed mass spectrometric methods to access metabolites associated with blast induced TBI. We applied these methods to the biofluids of soldiers conducting explosives training. Significant changes in several metabolites were observed between pre- and post-blast specimens, including changes that increased with repeated exposure. These changes point to the possibility of …

Weighted Effect Of Concentrated Cracking On The Structural Integrity Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Md Ala Uddin
Weighted Effect Of Concentrated Cracking On The Structural Integrity Of Concrete Bridge Decks, Md Ala Uddin
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Concrete bridge decks are vital components of transportation infrastructure, yet their deterioration due to aging, environmental, and operational factors poses significant challenges to maintenance and safety. In the United States, approximately 9.1% of bridges require improvement, with millions of daily trips relying on structurally deficient bridges. Cracking is one of the most frequently observed defects on concrete bridge structures. Traditional bridge inspections evaluate cracks based on severity (crack width) and extent (crack area), combining these values with other performance indicators to assess overall bridge health. However, the effect of concentrated cracking in localized areas on bridge integrity remains largely unexplored. …
Definition Of Fragmentation Functions And The Violation Of Sum Rules, John Collins, Ted C. Rogers
Definition Of Fragmentation Functions And The Violation Of Sum Rules, John Collins, Ted C. Rogers
Physics Faculty Publications
We point out a problem with the formulation and derivations of sum rules for quark fragmentation functions that impacts their validity in QCD, but which potentially points toward an improved understanding of final states in inclusive hard processes. Fragmentation functions give the distribution of final-state hadrons arising from a parton exiting a hard scattering, and the sum rules for momentum, electric charge, etc. express conservation of these quantities. The problem arises from a mismatch between the quark quantum numbers of the initial quark and the fact that all observed final-state hadrons are confined bound states with color zero. We point …

Evolution Of Efimov States, Sebastian M. Dawid, Md Habib E. Islam, Raúl A. Briceño, Andrew W. Jackura
Physics Faculty Publications
The Efimov phenomenon manifests itself as an emergent discrete scaling symmetry in the quantum three-body problem. In the unitarity limit, it leads to an infinite tower of three-body bound states with energies forming a geometric sequence. In this work, we study the evolution of these so-called Efimov states using relativistic scattering theory. We identify them as poles of the three-particle 𝑆 matrix in the complex energy plane, and we study how they transform from virtual states through bound states to resonances when we change the interaction strength. We dial the scattering parameters toward the unitarity limit and observe the emergence …

We study the relation between measured high-𝑥𝐵, high-𝑄2, helium-3 to tritium, (𝑒,𝑒′) inclusive-scattering cross-section ratios and the relative abundance of high-momentum neutron-proton (𝑛𝑝) and proton-proton (𝑝𝑝) short-range correlated nucleon pairs in three-body (𝐴=3) nuclei. Analysis of these data using a simple pair-counting cross-section model suggested a much smaller 𝑛𝑝/𝑝𝑝 ratio than previously measured in heavier nuclei, questioning our understanding of 𝐴 = 3 nuclei and, by extension, all other nuclei. Here, we examine this finding using spectral-function-based cross-section calculations, with both an ab initio 𝐴 = 3 spectral function and effective generalized contact formalism spectral functions …
Understanding Sextupole, T. Zolkin, I. Morozov, S. Nagaitsev
Understanding Sextupole, T. Zolkin, I. Morozov, S. Nagaitsev
Physics Faculty Publications
In this study, we reassess the dynamics within a simple accelerator lattice featuring a single degree of freedom and incorporating a sextupole magnet. In the initial segment, we revisit the Hénon quadratic map, a representation of a general transformation with quadratic nonlinearity. In the subsequent section, we unveil that a conventional sextupole is essentially a composite structure, comprising an integrable McMillan sextupole and octupole, along with non-integrable corrections of higher orders. This fresh perspective sheds light on the fundamental nature of the sextupole magnet, providing a more nuanced understanding of its far-from-trivial chaotic dynamics. Importantly, it enables the description of …

Inclusive Reactions From Finite Minkowski Spacetime Correlation Functions, Marco A. Carrillo, Raúl A. Briceño, Alexandru M. Sturzu

The need to determine scattering amplitudes of few-hadron systems for arbitrary kinematics expands a broad set of subfields of modern-day nuclear and hadronic physics. In this work, we expand upon previous explorations on the use of real-time methods, like quantum computing or tensor networks, to determine few-body scattering amplitudes. Such calculations must be performed in a finite Minkowski spacetime, where scattering amplitudes are not well defined. Our previous work presented a conjecture of a systematically improvable estimator for scattering amplitudes constructed from finite-volume correlation functions. Here we provide further evidence that the prescription works for larger kinematic regions than previously …
Conformal Bk Equation At Qcd Wilson-Fisher Point, I. Balitsky, G. A. Chirilli
Conformal Bk Equation At Qcd Wilson-Fisher Point, I. Balitsky, G. A. Chirilli
Physics Faculty Publications
High-energy scattering in pQCD in the Regge limit is described by the evolution of Wilson lines governed by the BK equation [1, 2]. In the leading order, the BK equation is conformally invariant and the eigenfunctions of the linearized BFKL equation are powers. It is a common belief that at d ≠ 4 the BFKL equation is useless since unlike d = 4 case it cannot be solved by usual methods. However, we demonstrate that at critical Wilson-Fisher point of QCD the relevant part of NLO BK restores the conformal invariance so the solutions are again powers. As a check …

The McDonnell Douglas framework is the most important analytical structure in employment discrimination law. Scholars and judges have regularly criticized the three-part burden-shifting test. Despite decades of criticism, a central feature of the framework remains unexamined - its second step is incompatible with the summaryjudgment standard.
In employment discrimination cases courts often grant summaryjudgment in the employer's favor. Scholars have offered various accounts of why this happens, including docket pressures and published case law that focuses on grants of summary judgment. The second step of the inquiry has largely escaped scrutiny because it appears to be a quirky, but somewhat …

We report on our recent works on dispersive analyses of ππ → ππ and ππ → K ¯ K scattering data and their use to address two controversial aspects of the f₀(1370) and f₀(980) scalar mesons. First, we show with model-independent techniques that the f₀(1370) pole does indeed appear in meson–meson scattering data, although there is tension between its values in the ππ and K ¯ K channels. Second, we explain the proper interpretation of the f₀(980) pole residue, which would otherwise lead to branching ratios larger than one. We have also provided simple ππ → ππ data parameterizations that …

Investigation Of L-Serine Synthesis And Transport As Stabilizing Feedback Mechanisms Within The Tsetse-Wigglesworthia Symbiosis, Ryan Phillips
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tsetse flies (Glossina morsitans), which are the obligate vectors of Old-World trypanosomes (Trypanosoma spp.) that cause African trypanosomiasis, have a bacteriome that houses the intracellular endosymbiont Wigglesworthia glossinidia. The ancient coevolution of these species has led to the integration of Wigglesworthia metabolism into tsetse physiology and a subsequent reliance on nutrient exchange for maintaining the fitness of both partners. The establishment of this obligate mutualism has facilitated the emergence of feedback mechanisms that stabilize the symbiosis, such as that which involves the exchange of L-serine and B vitamins. The Gammaproteobacteria Wigglesworthia supplement B vitamins lacking …

One of the most troubling and increasingly overlooked problems plaguing the federal judiciary has been the reduction of throughput at the Supreme Court and the resulting fragmentation of national law. The imperative to resolve circuit splits has taken a back seat as the Court grapples with high-profile battles and the relentless crush of certiorari petitions. This fuels confusion and greater fragmentation of national law. Add in the general expansion of national law, and the vicious cycle intensifies.
This Article proposes a solution for expanding structural capacity to address fragmentation that does not require legislative reform or constitutional amendment. It utilizes …
