Understanding Sextupole, T. Zolkin, I. Morozov, S. Nagaitsev Jan 2024

Understanding Sextupole, T. Zolkin, I. Morozov, S. Nagaitsev

Physics Faculty Publications

In this study, we reassess the dynamics within a simple accelerator lattice featuring a single degree of freedom and incorporating a sextupole magnet. In the initial segment, we revisit the Hénon quadratic map, a representation of a general transformation with quadratic nonlinearity. In the subsequent section, we unveil that a conventional sextupole is essentially a composite structure, comprising an integrable McMillan sextupole and octupole, along with non-integrable corrections of higher orders. This fresh perspective sheds light on the fundamental nature of the sextupole magnet, providing a more nuanced understanding of its far-from-trivial chaotic dynamics. Importantly, it enables the description of …

Inclusive Reactions From Finite Minkowski Spacetime Correlation Functions, Marco A. Carrillo, Raúl A. Briceño, Alexandru M. Sturzu Jan 2024

Inclusive Reactions From Finite Minkowski Spacetime Correlation Functions, Marco A. Carrillo, Raúl A. Briceño, Alexandru M. Sturzu

Physics Faculty Publications

The need to determine scattering amplitudes of few-hadron systems for arbitrary kinematics expands a broad set of subfields of modern-day nuclear and hadronic physics. In this work, we expand upon previous explorations on the use of real-time methods, like quantum computing or tensor networks, to determine few-body scattering amplitudes. Such calculations must be performed in a finite Minkowski spacetime, where scattering amplitudes are not well defined. Our previous work presented a conjecture of a systematically improvable estimator for scattering amplitudes constructed from finite-volume correlation functions. Here we provide further evidence that the prescription works for larger kinematic regions than previously …

Conformal Bk Equation At Qcd Wilson-Fisher Point, I. Balitsky, G. A. Chirilli Jan 2024

Conformal Bk Equation At Qcd Wilson-Fisher Point, I. Balitsky, G. A. Chirilli

Physics Faculty Publications

High-energy scattering in pQCD in the Regge limit is described by the evolution of Wilson lines governed by the BK equation [1, 2]. In the leading order, the BK equation is conformally invariant and the eigenfunctions of the linearized BFKL equation are powers. It is a common belief that at d ≠ 4 the BFKL equation is useless since unlike d = 4 case it cannot be solved by usual methods. However, we demonstrate that at critical Wilson-Fisher point of QCD the relevant part of NLO BK restores the conformal invariance so the solutions are again powers. As a check …

Irreconcilable: Mcdonnell Douglas And Summary Judgment, Sandra F. Sperino Jan 2024

Irreconcilable: Mcdonnell Douglas And Summary Judgment, Sandra F. Sperino

Faculty Publications

The McDonnell Douglas framework is the most important analytical structure in employment discrimination law. Scholars and judges have regularly criticized the three-part burden-shifting test. Despite decades of criticism, a central feature of the framework remains unexamined - its second step is incompatible with the summaryjudgment standard.

In employment discrimination cases courts often grant summaryjudgment in the employer's favor. Scholars have offered various accounts of why this happens, including docket pressures and published case law that focuses on grants of summary judgment. The second step of the inquiry has largely escaped scrutiny because it appears to be a quirky, but somewhat …

F₀(1370) And F₀(980) Controversies From Dispersive Data Analyses, Jose R. Pelaez, A. Rodas, J. Ruiz De Elvira Jan 2024

F₀(1370) And F₀(980) Controversies From Dispersive Data Analyses, Jose R. Pelaez, A. Rodas, J. Ruiz De Elvira

Physics Faculty Publications

We report on our recent works on dispersive analyses of ππ → ππ and ππ → K ¯ K scattering data and their use to address two controversial aspects of the f₀(1370) and f₀(980) scalar mesons. First, we show with model-independent techniques that the f₀(1370) pole does indeed appear in meson–meson scattering data, although there is tension between its values in the ππ and K ¯ K channels. Second, we explain the proper interpretation of the f₀(980) pole residue, which would otherwise lead to branching ratios larger than one. We have also provided simple ππ → ππ data parameterizations that …

Investigation Of L-Serine Synthesis And Transport As Stabilizing Feedback Mechanisms Within The Tsetse-Wigglesworthia Symbiosis, Ryan Phillips Jan 2024

Investigation Of L-Serine Synthesis And Transport As Stabilizing Feedback Mechanisms Within The Tsetse-Wigglesworthia Symbiosis, Ryan Phillips

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tsetse flies (Glossina morsitans), which are the obligate vectors of Old-World trypanosomes (Trypanosoma spp.) that cause African trypanosomiasis, have a bacteriome that houses the intracellular endosymbiont Wigglesworthia glossinidia. The ancient coevolution of these species has led to the integration of Wigglesworthia metabolism into tsetse physiology and a subsequent reliance on nutrient exchange for maintaining the fitness of both partners. The establishment of this obligate mutualism has facilitated the emergence of feedback mechanisms that stabilize the symbiosis, such as that which involves the exchange of L-serine and B vitamins. The Gammaproteobacteria Wigglesworthia supplement B vitamins lacking …

Breaking The Vicious Cycle Fragmenting National Law, Ryan Vacca, Peter S. Menell Jan 2024

Breaking The Vicious Cycle Fragmenting National Law, Ryan Vacca, Peter S. Menell

Faculty Publications

One of the most troubling and increasingly overlooked problems plaguing the federal judiciary has been the reduction of throughput at the Supreme Court and the resulting fragmentation of national law. The imperative to resolve circuit splits has taken a back seat as the Court grapples with high-profile battles and the relentless crush of certiorari petitions. This fuels confusion and greater fragmentation of national law. Add in the general expansion of national law, and the vicious cycle intensifies.

This Article proposes a solution for expanding structural capacity to address fragmentation that does not require legislative reform or constitutional amendment. It utilizes …

Targeting Pyruvate Metabolism Leads To Distinct Cd8+ T Cell Responses To Virus Infection And Cancer, Taewook Kang Jan 2024

Targeting Pyruvate Metabolism Leads To Distinct Cd8+ T Cell Responses To Virus Infection And Cancer, Taewook Kang

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

CD8+ T cells are crucial immune cells that control viruses and cancers due to their high antigen specificity and proliferative capacity. Consequently, CD8+ T cells are being extensively explored in adoptive T cell therapy for cancer, autoimmune diseases, and infections in clinical and pre-clinical studies. Given that T cells rely on nutrient microenvironments and employ various nutrient processing pathways, metabolic intervention presents a promising strategy to enhance CD8+ T cell function and differentiation.

Pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) serves as a critical bifurcation point in the metabolic pathway, determining whether glucose-derived pyruvate undergoes mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) or cytosolic …

Highlights

  • Rhodium has heretofore been known to be unselective for acetylene semi-hydrogenation.

  • Electronic properties of rhodium are tuned by choice of support and metal nuclearity.

  • Selectivity is maximized when Rh is atomically dispersed on a weak electron donor.

  • Zeolite-supported Rh complex with C2H2 ligands offers a stable C2H4 selectivity > 90 %.

  • Results demonstrate unprecedented catalytic properties of Rh for semi-hydrogenation.

Abstract

Supported rhodium catalysts are known to be unselective for semi-hydrogenation reactions. Here, by tuning the electronic structure of supported mononuclear rhodium sites determined by the metal nuclearity and the electron-donor properties of the support, we report that atomically dispersed …

From Private To Public: Lateral Transfer Student Experiences, Melissa P. Stough, Diane C. Elliott

Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs

The phenomenon of student movement between higher education institutions has received considerable attention due to its widespread occurrence and impact on academic trajectories. While extensive research has focused on vertical transfer, such as transitions from community colleges to four-year institutions, less scrutiny has been directed towards lateral transfer, involving shifts between institutions at similar academic levels. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the factors influencing lateral transfer, specifically from private four-year colleges to public four-year institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened interest in this understudied area, with indications of increased lateral transfers in its aftermath. Leveraging data …

Fp-24-11 Divorce: More Than A Century Of Change, 1900-2022, Jaden Loo

National Center for Family and Marriage Research Family Profiles

Although the divorce rate in the United States increased throughout much of the twentieth century, it has declined in recent decades. Here we explore the variation in women’s rate of divorce and the proportion of ever-married women separated/divorced from 1900 to 2022 using National Vital Statistics, Decennial Census, and American Community Survey data. We then examine the proportion of currently separated/divorced among ever-married women from 1940 to 2022, disaggregating trends by race/ethnicity and educational attainment. This profile is an update to FP-20-22 and a companion profile to FP-24-10, which details variation in marriage trends over the last century.

This dissertation focuses on developing predictive modeling using data from two areas: clinical data and microbiome data. Compositional data in real life are mainly represented by relative proportions. With the advancement of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, researchers can now collect a large volume of metagenomic sequencing data, which is valuable for investigating associations between the microbiome and host diseases. Current methods for dealing with such data are either constrained by generalization or limited by application. In the first part, to address this, we propose Bayesian compositional generalized linear models for analyzing microbiome data (BCGLM). This model incorporates a structured regularized …
