Abstract Background/purpose Primary Sjögren's syndrome is a prototypical autoimmune disease, with B cell dysfunction as a dominant feature. Further insights into distribution of B cell subsets in primary Sjögren's syndrome are urgently required to identify the most appropriate target subpopulation. We aimed to evaluate the profiles of B lymphocyte subpopulations in primary Sjögren's syndrome patients and to investigate their clinical significance. Materials and methods Thirty primary Sjögren's syndrome patients and 15 age-and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Peripheral B cell subsets were analyzed by flow cytometry. Abstract Background/purpose In Taiwan, there are very few dental radiology curricula in medical radiation education system. This study assessed the participants’ learning outcomes after finishing the dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists in Taiwan. Materials and methods This study used the questionnaire survey to evaluate the participants’ learning outcomes after finishing the dental radiology course for the continuing education of medical radiation technologists in Taiwan. Results In this study, 85 participants filled out the questionnaires completely after finishing the dental radiology course. Abstract Many people have associated e-cigarettes with adjectives such as trendy and cool, and regarded vaping as “a safer alternative to cigarette smoking”. Compared with the conventional cigarettes, the public is less familiar with the dangers of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating the e-liquid (usually comprising nicotine, flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other additives). Harmful substances are generated during the vaporization, such as formaldehyde. Cellular damages and DNA hypermethylation are also found to be associated with vaping. Abstract Background/purpose Patients' considerations when choosing an orthodontist are influenced by many factors, including background, ethnicity, and location. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify factors influencing patients’ considerations when selecting an orthodontist in both Malaysia and Taiwan. Materials and methods In total, 248 dental students from Taipei Medical University and 110 dental students from Manipal University College Malaysia were selected for this study. Participants' considerations when selecting an orthodontist were assessed using a questionnaire survey. Abstract Background/purpose The handheld nonthermal plasma (HNP) treatment may alter the surface properties, bone metabolism, and inflammatory reactions of polyaryletherketone (PAEK) dental implant materials. This study tested whether the HNP treatment might increase the biocompatibility, surface hydrophilicity, surface free energies (SFEs), and the cell adhesion and mineralization capability of PAEK materials. Abstract Background/purpose Mesenchymal stem cells exhibit therapeutic efficacy for brain injury. This study examined the effect of mesenchymal stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) on alleviating symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). Materials and methods SHED were isolated to examine the biosafety and bioavailability of stem cells derived from human exfoliated deciduous teeth-derived conditioned medium (SHED-CM) for the alleviation of PD symptoms in a 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD zebrafish model. Abstract Background/purpose The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is increasing worldwide. HPV vaccines have shown efficacy in preventing diseases in both males and females. Therefore, there is a need to develop cost-effective strategies for HPV vaccines to prevent HPV-related OPC. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate cost-effectiveness using the global mean of incremental cost-effectiveness ratios compared to the willingness-to-pay threshold and incremental net benefits (INBs) of HPV vaccination strategies between boys’ extension vaccine and girls only. Abstract Background/purpose Challenges exist regarding the bonding efficiency of polyaryletherketone (PAEK), a high-performance thermoplastic, attributed to its chemical inertness and hydrophobic surface, hindering effective bonding with resin-matrix cement. This research explored the impact of handheld nonthermal plasma (HNP), under varying operational parameters, on PAEK surface wettability and changes in bonding performance with cement. Abstract Background/purpose Cementum shares many properties with bone; however, in contrast to bone, it is not innervated or vascularized and has a limited capacity for remodeling. Osteocytes located in the lacunae-canalicular system of bone tissue play a central role in bone remodeling by communicating with osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Although cementocytes are present in cellular cementum and are morphologically similar to osteocytes, it remains unclear whether they are involved in the dynamic functional regulation of metabolism in cementum. Abstract Background/purpose Large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Bard, and Microsoft's Bing Chat have shown potential as educational tools in the medical and dental fields. This study evaluated their effectiveness using questions from the Japanese national dental hygienist examination, focusing on textual information only. Materials and methods We analyzed 73 questions from the 32nd Japanese national dental hygienist examination, conducted in March 2023, using LLMs ChatGPT-3.5, GPT-4, Bard, and Bing Chat.
