Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract Background/purpose Periodontitis is associated with various systemic diseases, potentially facilitated by the passage of Porphyromonas gingivalis outer membrane vesicles (Pg-OMVs). Several recent studies have suggested a connection between Pg-OMVs and neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, but the precise causal relationship remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying these associations using in vitro models. Materials and methods Isolated Pg-OMVs were characterized by morphology, size, and gingipain activity. We exposed SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells and BV-2 microglial cells to various concentrations of Pg-OMVs. Cell morphology, a 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Western blot analysis were used to evaluate …

Soft Tissue Management Around Dental Implant In Esthetic Zone – The Current Concepts And Novel Techniques, Teresa Chanting Sun, Tsung-Kai Chang
Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract It has been said, ‘Bone sets the tone, but tissue is the issue.’ In the field of implantology, while significant breakthroughs have been achieved in hard tissue regeneration, clinicians find it more challenging to handle soft tissue complications around dental implants. Successfully managing soft tissue around dental implants requires clinicians to have comprehensive knowledge of proper implant placement, prosthetic design and tissue management, and a high level of surgical skills for soft tissue augmentation and grafting. Autogenous gingival grafts can be utilized in various clinical situations, providing surgeons with great potential and freedom to enhance the quality and quantity …

Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract Surgical intervention for medication-related jaw osteonecrosis (MRONJ) is currently the main treatment method, offering a higher healing rate than conservative approaches. However, the management of bony defects after sequestrectomy remains a challenging issue due to poor vascularization from the drug effect. The use of pedicled buccal fat pad (PBFP) for filling bone defects has become common and effective but is limited to the posterior maxillary region. To add to the advantages of the buccal fat pad, we explored a novel treatment approach using a free buccal fat pad (FBFP) to fill bone defects other than the posterior maxilla. While …

Oral Microbial Profiles Of Extrinsic Black Tooth Stain In Primary Dentition: A Literature Review, Shinan Zhang, Xue Dong, Weijin Zhao, Sha Ma, Ximeng Li, Guiding Li
Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract The extrinsic black tooth stain (EBS) is commonly found in primary dentition. Patients cannot clean the EBS; this can only be done by professional scaling and debridement. It also has a tendency to reform, which significantly compromises children's aesthetics and even affects their quality of life. However, there is no conclusive evidence on the etiology of the EBS. The associations between the EBS and related oral microbial features is one of the research hot topics. No literature review summarized these research progresses in this area. Therefore, we reviewed the literature on the microbiology of the EBS since 1931 and …

Adverse Effects Of Electronic Cigarettes On Human Health, Chung-Pin Chiang, Yu-Hsueh Wu
Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract Many people have associated e-cigarettes with adjectives such as trendy and cool, and regarded vaping as “a safer alternative to cigarette smoking”. Compared with the conventional cigarettes, the public is less familiar with the dangers of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol by heating the e-liquid (usually comprising nicotine, flavorings, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and other additives). Harmful substances are generated during the vaporization, such as formaldehyde. Cellular damages and DNA hypermethylation are also found to be associated with vaping. We reviewed the clinical neoplastic cases of patients with vaping history (three oral squamous cell carcinomas, one conjunctival squamous intraepithelial …
