Sugar Composition Of Thai Desserts And Gut Microbiome Profiles In Healthy Volunteers: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Sayamon Senaprom
Sugar Composition Of Thai Desserts And Gut Microbiome Profiles In Healthy Volunteers: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Sayamon Senaprom
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The glycemic index (GI) measures the blood glucose-raising potential of carbohydrate-rich foods and is associated with obesity and insulin resistance. In addition, an imbalanced gut microbiota has been linked to elevated postprandial blood glucose levels. However, the relationship between consuming Thai desserts predominantly composed of carbohydrates and gut microbiome profiles remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of consuming various Thai desserts with different GI values on the gut microbiomes of healthy volunteers. This open-label, parallel randomized clinical trial involved 30 healthy individuals aged 18 to 45 years. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Phetchaburi’s …

Profiling The Microbiome In Breast Cancer Patients Before And After Treatment With Cannabis Oil, May Soe Thu
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
With long-term cancer treatment, female breast cancer patients encounter debilitating side effects from a current range of cancer therapies. Cannabinoids (CBs) have been widely used due to their efficacy on chemotherapy-associated pain. Although there is some evidence that cannabis oil may enhance quality of life and lessen symptoms in people with breast cancer, this is not very substantial. No randomised trials evaluating the effects of cannabis in breast cancer patients has been conducted before. The microbiome is critical to human health and disease, and accumulating data suggests that it is influenced by a variety of external variables, including marijuana, cannabis, …

Development Of 3d Cell Culture Model For Graves’ Ophthalmopathy, Rajit Chompoowong
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Orbital tissue fibrosis and remodeling contribute to the development of exophthalmos, a hallmark symptom of Graves’ ophthalmopathy (GO). The central pathogenesis to this process are orbital fibroblasts (GOF), which express autoantigen, thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR). However, there are limitations in preclinical models for studying the pathogenesis and drug discovery of GO, which poses challenges for developing effective treatment options. This study aimed to identify markers of GOF, explore epigenetic alteration, and develop a scaffold-free 3D cell culture model for GO. The novel results from immunohistochemical analysis showed that vimentin was uniquely expressed in GO but absent in control samples. Additionally, …
Rapid Bacterial Pathogen Identification With Nanopore Sequencing In Clinical Urinary Tract Infection Setting, Panupong Wangprapa
Rapid Bacterial Pathogen Identification With Nanopore Sequencing In Clinical Urinary Tract Infection Setting, Panupong Wangprapa
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect approximately two-thirds of women worldwide, posing a significant healthcare burden. Uncomplicated UTIs can escalate if not treated promptly. Inappropriate antibiotic use, driven by slow conventional diagnostics, contributes to the escalating crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A rapid, accurate, and affordable pathogen identification with integrated AMR profiling is essential for effective treatment and responsible antibiotic stewardship.Traditional UTI diagnosis relies on urine culture and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), often requiring up to 96 hours and thus necessitating the empiric use of broad-spectrum antibiotics as a first-line of treatment. While faster options like dipsticks and Polymerase Chain Reaction …

This thesis presents innovative deep learning models designed to enhance the efficiency of solving linear programming, transportation, and traveling salesman problems. The first model, LP-Net, predicts the binding optimal constraints in linear programming problems, achieving faster solution times compared to traditional solvers like CPLEX. The second model, Transport-Net, predicts optimal basic feasible arcs for transportation problems, demonstrating significant speedups and superior scalability over both CPLEX and Gurobi in large-scale instances. The third model, TSP-Net, addresses the traveling salesman problem by predicting an initial near-optimal tour, outperforming Gurobi and genetic algorithms in computational efficiency. Collectively, these deep learning approaches offer transformative …
Silica Dust Exposure Assessment Using Job-Exposure Matrix:A Case Of Sandstone Workers In Thailand, Chamaiphon Chari
Silica Dust Exposure Assessment Using Job-Exposure Matrix:A Case Of Sandstone Workers In Thailand, Chamaiphon Chari
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). In Thailand, household sandstone workers were one of the most susceptible occupational groups to silicosis. However, a lack of current information about their work patterns and job-related exposures to respirable crystalline silica could hinder the success of tracking and surveillance programs. This study was conducted to explore working characteristics and patterns, and to evaluate the work diary data in the estimation of RCS exposure and health risk among household sandstone workers. All data were collected from a work diary record …
An Extended Conceptualization Of Cultural Intelligence, Alexey V. Semenov
An Extended Conceptualization Of Cultural Intelligence, Alexey V. Semenov
Funded Scholarship
Cultural Intelligence (CQ) has gained prominence as a vital attribute for organizational managers, encompassing their ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts effectively. However, despite its acknowledged significance, the relationships among its dimensions need to be better understood. This paper contributes to the existing CQ literature in two ways. First, we propose a model of CQ that integrates elements from previous conceptualizations, separating the motivational component. Our proposed framework retains the metacognitive, cognitive, and behavioral CQ dimensions but does not assume predefined relationships among them. Instead, we demonstrate that metacognitive CQ positively influences cognitive and behavioral CQ. Second, this paper explores …

Constrained Multiview Representation For Self-Supervised Contrastive Learning, Siyuan Dai, Kai Ye, Kun Zhao, Ge Cui, Haoteng Tang, Liang Zhan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Representation learning constitutes a pivotal cornerstone in contemporary deep learning paradigms, offering a conduit to elucidate distinctive features within the latent space and interpret the deep models. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of anatomical patterns and the random nature of lesion distribution in medical image segmentation pose significant challenges to the disentanglement of representations and the understanding of salient features. Methods guided by the maximization of mutual information, particularly within the framework of contrastive learning, have demonstrated remarkable success and superiority in decoupling densely intertwined representations. However, the effectiveness of contrastive learning highly depends on the quality of the positive and …
Development Of A Novel Beam-Type Neutron Lifetime Experiment Using Ultracold Neutrons, Nicholas Floyd
Development Of A Novel Beam-Type Neutron Lifetime Experiment Using Ultracold Neutrons, Nicholas Floyd
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Precision measurements of the neutron lifetime are critical to tests of the Standard Model. The CKM quark mixing matrix has recently been shown to deviate from unitarity in the top row, motivating the development of alternative extractions of the first element. Complementary measurements of the neutron’s lifetime and decay correlations can be used to accomplish this.
While the reported neutron lifetime by the Particle Data Group is taken from ultracold neutron (UCN) measurements, a separate class of experiments suggest a value in four sigma disagreement, meriting further study. The goal of the UCNProBe experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory is …

Despite the extensive research successes and continuous developments in modern medicine in terms of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, the lack of clinically useful disease-modifying drugs or immunotherapeutic agents that can successfully treat or prevent neurodegenerative diseases is an ongoing challenge. To date, only one of the 244 drugs in clinical trials for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases has been approved in the past decade, indicating a failure rate of 99.6%. In corollary, the approved monoclonal antibody did not demonstrate significant cognitive benefits. Thus, the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases is increasing rapidly. Therefore, there is an urgent need for creative approaches …

Impact Of A Culturally-Grounded And Interprofessional Approach To Managing Latino/Hispanic Patients At Risk For Or Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilot Study, Jahnavi Yalamanchili
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Background: Despite significant progress in diabetes research, there remain significant health disparities between Hispanic/Latino patients in the United States, particularly those with lower socioeconomic status, compared to non-Hispanic white patients. Previous studies have identified potential reasons behind these disparities, including the need for a multifaceted approach that addresses social determinants of health (SDOH) faced by patients. Social cognitive theory (SCT) stipulates that interventions that promote self-management by improving knowledge, self-efficacy, and problem-solving skills can be successful in improving health outcomes. However, there is a paucity of studies that have evaluated an interprofessional approach to providing culturally relevant care, in particular …
Novel Regulators Of Small G Proteins In The Pancreatic Beta Cell, Noah Gleason
Novel Regulators Of Small G Proteins In The Pancreatic Beta Cell, Noah Gleason
Wayne State University Dissertations
Regulation of small GTPases within the pancreatic beta cell is a highly complex and coordinated sequence of protein interactions and post translational modifications. Various families participate in the physiological secretion of insulin in roles ranging from cytoskeletal reorganization to secretory vesicle priming and docking. However the regulatory partners of GTPase function, while studied broadly, lack vital information relating to smgGDS, a protein chaperone of small GTPases to and from the prenylation machinery, and RhoGDI function. Herein these studies are aimed to further our understanding of GTPase regulation and alterations that occur during metabolic stress (glucotoxicity) and related beta cell dysfunction.Data …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Ableist Microaggressions, Jennifer M. Cook, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The phenomenon of microaggressions is well established within the counseling literature, particularly as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, and affectual orientation. However, research related to disability or ableist microaggressions is still in its infancy, so counseling professionals have limited information about experiences of disability and ableist microaggressions. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to describe participants’ self-reported experiences with ableist microaggressions. Participants (N = 90) had a diagnosed disability and the majority (91.11%) identified as having two or more nondominant identities beyond their disability. We report two categories and 10 themes. While participants were part of …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
Microaggressions are commonplace overt and covert forms of discrimination that convey disparaging messages to individuals who hold marginalized identities, including people with disabilities (PWD). Although PWD are a prevalent nondominant identity group in the United States, little is known about the occurrence of ableist microaggressions in this culturally diverse community, including how ableist microaggressions are experienced based on disability characteristics and other nondominant identities. A sample consisting of 201 PWD completed an electronic survey that examined the occurrence of ableist microaggressions based on visibility of disability, type of disability, and nondominant sociocultural identities. We found that PWD have a moderate …

Comparative Evaluation Of Different Spinal Stability Metrics, Amir Hossein Eskandari, Farshid Ghezelbash, Aboulfazl Shirazi-Adl, Christian Larivière
Études primaires
Direct in vivo measurements of spinal stability are not possible, leaving computational estimations (such as dynamic time series and structural analyses) as the feasible option. However, differences between different stability assessment approaches and metrics remain unclear. To explore this, we asked 32 participants to perform 35 cycles of repetitive lifts with and without load (4/2.6 kg for males/females). EMG signals and 3D kinematics were collected via 12 surface electrodes and 17 inertial sensors, and three dynamical stability measures were computed: short and long temporal and conventional maximum Lyapunov exponents (LyE) and maximum Floquet multipliers (FM). A dynamic subject-specific EMG-assisted musculoskeletal …

This study investigates how rural communities In Oklahoma conceive of their socioeconomic position in larger systems, as well as their resiliency and ability to withstand challenges. Utilizing systems thinking and polycentricity literature, we analyze interviews to construct an understanding of how rural communities perceive themselves, and how this impacts interactions with other communities and governments. Rural communities and their associated challenges are complex and impacted by a range of factors. We find that rural residents also feel this complexity, and understand their issues as products of overlapping systems and structures, and both internal and external factors. Additionally, we observe little …

The adaptive mechanical properties of soft and fibrous biological materials are relevant to their functionality. The emergence of the macroscopic response of these materials to external stress and intrinsic cell traction from local deformations of their structural components is not well understood. Here, we investigate the nonlinear elastic behavior of blood clots by combining microscopy, rheology, and an elastic network model that incorporates the stretching, bending, and buckling of constituent fibrin fibers. By inhibiting fibrin cross-linking in blood clots, we observe an anomalous softening regime in the macroscopic shear response as well as a reduction in platelet-induced clot contractility. Our …
