Emerging adults (ages 18-29) are at a heightened risk for developing mental illnesses, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and dying by suicide. Further, some emerging adults are considered to have “failed to launch” from their parents’ homes, leading to a postponement to full-fledged adulthood. While parents often play a significant role in their emerging adults’ lives, there is limited research on evidence-based treatment for emerging adults that systematically incorporate parents. Given the strong research support for Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A) that includes parent involvement, it is sensible to consider applying developmentally tailored adaptations to additional populations and understand …

Impact Of Nature-Based Tourism On Bird Vocalization Rate In The Bajo Del Tigre Reserve, Monteverde, Costa Rica, Abby K. Bressette, Adriana Arias Aguilar

Nature-based tourism benefits economies, communities, and conservation initiatives, but it can also have unintended negative effects on wildlife. For birds, vocal communication is essential, yet it can be disrupted by anthropogenic noise. In this study, I used passive recording to examine how human visitation impacts the rate of bird vocalizations in the Bajo del Tigre Reserve in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Overall, bird vocalization rate was not affected by visitation (p > 0.05), but species-specific differences were found. Vocalizations of the lesser greenlet showed no significant change with visitation (p > 0.05). In contrast, the orange-billed nightingale-thrush exhibited a decrease in vocalization rates …

Throughout history, lesbian, gay, Transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and agender plus Students have been marginalized in society and, in particular, K-12 schools. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of young adults and recent high school graduates to gather information about their experience in K-12 educational environments to determine if their developmental needs were met. This study focused on youth who attended K-12 schools in a specific district in Southeast Michigan and participated in out-of-school time programs at a local teen center. Ulcerative colitis (UC) poses significant challenges during pregnancy, affecting both physical and mental health. While the physiological effects of UC during pregnancy are well documented, less is known about its impact on maternal mental health. This study aims to investigate the psychological effects of UC on pregnant women, focusing on stress levels, postpartum depression (PPD) incidence, and the role of multidisciplinary care in improving mental health outcomes.

This project documents food access, barriers, production, and suggestions for improvement in the food system across a largely agricultural five-county (Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens, and Traverse) region in West-Central Minnesota. A variety of methods, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, were used to gather data. Secondary (e.g., US Census, USDA Census of Agriculture) and historical (e.g., grocery store directories) data were also used in this project.

Approximately half of household food security survey respondents (N= 283) had in the last year at least worried about there not being enough money for food in their household. Respondents experiencing food insecurity were …

Purpose: The purpose of this explanatory mixed methods study was to identify and describe the perceived impact of Johnson and Mohr’s (2013) five disruptive career skills on female medical education executives on their advancement to executive leadership positions.

Methodology: This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed methods approach to explore the career advancement strategies of female leaders in academic medicine. First, a quantitative survey using Likert scales assessed the use and impact of personal disruption strategies among female executives; next, semistructured interviews provided deeper insights into their experiences. A comprehensive view of whole-brain amino acid levels holds the potential to provide valuable insights into the brain's state, given the mutual interconnections through metabolism, food intake, and neurotransmission. We tested this concept by evaluating free amino acid levels in single Drosophila brains across 24 h and at two different ages. A large proportion of these amino acids displayed time-of-day variations, and a subset exhibited age-dependent variations. Cross-correlation analysis of the data sets confirmed broad time-of-day and age dependent interconnections between amino acids. By exploring questions related to the impact of mindfulness on parental stress levels, parent-child interactions, emotional awareness, self-regulation, and nonjudgmental acceptance, the research sheds light on the transformative potential of long-term meditation practices for mindful parenting. Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) effectively decreases disruptive behavior in children (Daley et al., 2014). Nonetheless, many parents perceive BPT to be challenging and demanding, leading to reports of high treatment dropout rates (Chacko et al., 2016.) To address this, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of Goodtimer, a behavioral health device utilizing contingency management, an element of BPT, to mitigate child disruptive behaviors. The Goodtimer is designed to make administering a contingency management system easier for parents. The term has surged in U.S. political discourse following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel’s subsequent onslaught of Gaza, and escalating violence in the region involving Iran and similarly aligned groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis. U.S. politicians and thought leaders have characterized U.S. support for Israel’s bombardment as a fight against “terror,” described the violence conducted by Palestinians and their backers as “terrorism,” and accused pro-Palestinian U.S. protestors of “supporting terrorism.”

Nondual awareness has recently gained increased interest in broader psychological research. In meditation contexts, it reflects the dissolution of subject and object, while in Maha_ya_na Buddhism, practitioners aim to develop insight that leads to awareness of nonduality in everyday-life situations. Traditionally, teaching of nondualism employed paradoxes to prompt nonconceptual inquiry into reconciling dualistic contradictions. To offer an approach to communicate nondualism to a modern audience of psychology researchers, the framework of unitlessness is introduced here, which differentiates between linguistic characteristics (units) and experiential phenomena (unity), both within an enveloping ineffability (unitlessness). In a 2019 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), infections resistant to antibiotic treatment amount to about three million infections and 48,000 deaths. Antimicrobial resistance is an escalating global threat as existing antibiotics lose efficacy over time. The project described is focused on partnering with pharmaceutical researchers and producers to test new nanoparticle-based or repurposed compounds. The central hypothesis of this thesis is that pharmaceutical formulations such as nanoparticles may provide a cost-effective means of combating the emerging antimicrobial resistance. We present a general version of Massera's theorems for arbitrary discrete domains, based on a newly introduced definition for both linear and nonlinear equations. For scalar nonlinear equations, we identify sufficient conditions that ensure each µ-bounded solution approaches a periodic solution asymptotically. In the case of linear systems, we prove that the presence of a µ-bounded solution necessarily leads to a periodic solution. We also provide some examples to show the practical implications of our findings.

Purpose: Neuroma formation is a notable complication that can occur following amputation. Newer techniques are proving to be successful in preventing neuroma formation by providing the proximal nerve segment with an end organ to help with organized growth. Redirecting arterial blood flow to the nerve endings may be an effective mechanism of preventing neuroma formation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that by coapting the proximal end of a transected nerve with a functional artery as a vascular end organ, neuroma formation can be prevented.
