Problem Global breastfeeding rates remain low despite numerous breastfeeding benefits, which poses significant challenges and contributes to adverse infant health outcomes. In response, the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was established to advocate, defend, and uphold breastfeeding encouraging healthy infant development from birth through early childhood. Context Hospital A is in the East Bay with a perinatal unit seeking BFHI certification. A microsystem assessment identified the need to ensure that postpartum nurses deliver accurate and consistent BFHI-aligned education to meet designation requirements. The food security program aims to reduce hypertension and food insecurity by increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Although food insecurity is a growing public health issue, the food security program experienced significantly low enrollment compared to projected values. The quality improvement project was conducted in an adult medicine department in a primary care clinic in San Francisco serving the Latinx community. To address the issue of low program enrollment, a comprehensive educational food security program flyer was developed containing program information, including frequently asked questions. Objective The usage of social robots in pediatrics is an emerging field of study. Preliminary research shows that they are effective at improving the psychosocial well-being of pediatric patients. This quality improvement project focuses on Pupper, a newly developed quadruped social robot dog, and its ability in improving mood and happiness in pediatric patients of a cardiac step-down unit. Prairie pothole wetlands are a type of depressional, isolated wetland that can be found in the glaciated landscape of the mid-central United States and portions of southern Canada, also referred to as the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). The region is consistently recognized for its historic production and support of migratory waterfowl populations among other types of mammals and invertebrates largely due to the variability in pothole wetlands water levels and vegetative structure. This study examines the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and student achievement among high school students in rural Mississippi. By using a mixed-methods approach that combines quantitative data from the Mississippi Department of Education’s Accountability Report Card with qualitative data from student surveys and teacher interviews, this paper explores how SES factors such as parental income and education affect academic outcomes in rural settings. The study highlights the significant disparities between low-SES and high-SES students in terms of standardized test scores, graduation rates, and access to educational resources. This study investigates the correlation between soil selenium levels and Type 2 diabetes (T2D) prevalence across U.S. regions between 2012 to 2018. Selenium, an essential trace element, plays an important role in antioxidant defense and metabolism. While appropriate selenium intake may protect against diabetes by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing oxidative stress, excessive intake can have adverse effects. Fruit and vegetable consumption is critical for children’s health, yet many fail to meet recommended intake levels. School gardens have the potential to increase consumption and improve attitudes toward fruits and vegetables. This study examined the impact of a school gardening program on children’s attitudes and consumption of fruits and vegetables using a pre- and post-test design. While most children reported enjoying gardening and trying new produce, no significant changes were observed in overall attitudes or consumption patterns after the intervention. Hummus consumption has risen but multiple foodborne outbreaks due to Salmonella contamination have been reported. Essential oils (EOs) eugenol and carvacrol have been found to inhibit the growth and survival of Salmonella in food products. The objective was to evaluate antibacterial properties of various concentrations of eugenol (EU) and carvacrol (CA), alone or in combination (EUCA) against Salmonella in vitro and in hummus. Eugenol demonstrated a MIC of 0.125 mg/mL and an MBC of 0.25 mg/mL, while carvacrol showed a MIC of 0.0625 mg/mL and an MBC of 0.125 mg/mL. In the hummus study, 2% EUCA was the most effective …

Understanding the bacterial profile of chicken during processing is essential to identify spoilage-related bacteria. Using advanced methods like Oxford Nanopore sequencing, specific bacterial species on chicken meat can be identified. This study aimed to characterize bacterial composition and diversity on chicken breast during processing. Results showed a reduction in aerobic bacteria, E. coli, coliform, and lactic acid bacteria counts. However, three thermophilic bacteria, Anoxybacillus contaminants, Neobacillus thermocopriae, and Anoxybacillus flavithermus, dominated across processing steps. Notably, Pseudomonas species were undetected by conventional plating but identified via Nanopore sequencing, highlighting the need for molecular detection methods. In 2014, a virulent clonal group of Aeromonas hydrophila (VAH) was the predominant disease impacting the east Mississippi (EMS) commercial catfish industry. The EMS aquatic ambulatory service observed an area not prone to VAH outbreaks. Sweet potatoes are a worldwide staple crop and granola bars are popular with consumers. This study aims to create a granola bar utilizing sweet potatoes and to assess its changes over time. Initial formulations tested minimum and maximum concentration of sweet potato (SP) puree, formulations, cooking type and time/temperature, humectants and preservatives. Bars containing 30 and 45% SP butter were chosen. Reducing herbicide carryover in soybean production is imperative to sustain future soybean cropping systems in Mississippi and the rest of the world. This research was conducted to determine the response of inoculated soybean to corn (Zea mays L.) residual herbicides. The herbicide treatments included aatrex (atrazine), callisto (mesotrione), lexar (atrazine+mesotrione+s-metolachlor), and steadfast (nicosulfuron+rimsulfuron) at 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of the total label rate. Inoculant treatments were Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Bacillus subtilis, and no inoculant. Bacterial inoculants positively impacted most shoot and root growth parameters, significantly increasing depending on the herbicide x inoculant treatment combination and its rate. Dry-cured hams may become infested with Tyrophagus putrescentiae (ham mites) during the aging process. Traditionally, methyl bromide (MB) fumigation has been used to control these infestations, but its phase-out due to environmental concerns has prompted the need for alternative methods. This study evaluated the effectiveness of acetic acid-coated ham nets and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based edible films with propylene glycol (PG) in mitigating mite infestations. Laboratory trials assessed the impact of these treatments on mite orientation, reproduction, infestation rates, and sensory quality. Two capacitive sensors, a commercial FP-32C and a custom design capacitor plate were evaluated for real-time cotton moisture content (MC%) measurement in ginning environment. The sensors were able to measure MC ranges of 3.56%–19.7% and 4.56%–21.04% MC for FP-32C and custom capacitor pate, respectively. In dynamic mode, the ranges were 4.9%–14.5% and 4.9%–14.7% respectively. Results showed that measurements of both sensors had strong correlations with results obtained from oven method. The Effects Of The Brain Training Program On Cognition Among The Older Adults In Thailand, Chutima Thongwachira, Vilaivan Thongcharoen, Usa Khemthong, Natnarun Kleawklong

Background: Dementia is typically found in older adults, and negatively impacts cognitive function. The current study examined the effects of brain training programs with learning activities on cognitive function in older adults.

Methods: We conducted a two-arm quasi-experimental study with participants who were over 60 years old and had Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores < 25 (n=66). The intervention group (n=33) performed a brain training program with learning activities based on social cognitive theory. MoCA scores were evaluated at baseline, immediately after activities were completed at Week 9, and 3 months after the activities were completed.

Results: Sixty-six participants showed low MoCA. Mean MoCA scores at baseline in the control group (CG) and intervention group (IG) were 20.09 (SD = 2.89) and 19.82 (SD = 2.33), respectively; whereas MoCA scores immediately after activities were completed (Week 9) were 19.15 (SD = 2.06) …

Background: Parental attitudes toward children's outdoor recreation are vital for holistic child development. This study aimed to translate and validate the Parental Attitudes Towards Their Child’s Outdoor Recreation (PACOR) questionnaire in Thai among parents of preschoolers.

Methods: The PACOR was translated into Thai through forward and back-translation, then culturally adapted for Thai parents. A final Thai-PACOR was formed by an expert committee. Content validity was assessed using Item-Objective Congruence values while internal consistency and test-retest reliability were evaluated. Construct validity was determined via factor analysis and comparison of parental attitudes based on children's sex.

Background: Anemia remains a major public health concern among adolescent girls in Indonesia. To address this, weekly iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation has been implemented nationwide. This study examined factors associated with anemia and adherence to IFA supplementation among adolescent girls in three senior high schools within the Poka-Rumah Tiga Health Centers' catchment area in Ambon City, Indonesia.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in August 2022 involving 522 female students from three senior high schools in Ambon City. Factors associated with anemia and adherence to weekly IFA supplementation were examined using logistic regression.

These symptoms, including agitation, wandering, and repetitive activities, impose emotional and physical burdens on caregivers, often exacerbated by a lack of reliable, accessible, and personalized resources. BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is an increasingly common high-risk pregnancy condition requiring intensive daily self-management, placing the burden of care directly on the patient. Understanding personal and cultural differences among patients is critical for delivering optimal support for GDM self-management, particularly in high-risk populations. Although mobile apps for GDM self-management are being used, limited research has been done on the personalized and culturally tailored features of these apps and their impact on patient self-management.

Sperm morphology, the study of the size, shape, and appearance of sperm cells, is vital in evaluating male fertility. This assessment has evolved through decades of research, beginning in the 1930s with foundational classification systems by Cary and Moench.

A significant advancement came in the late 1980s with the Kruger strict criteria, which standardized sperm morphology evaluation using high-magnification microscopy and advanced staining, supported by the WHO.

In prisons throughout the United States, prisoners commonly use hunger strikes as an avenue of protest to make personal demands, to call attention to poor prison conditions, or to make various political statements. Prisoners typically choose this route because they view their own bodies as one of the few things over which they actually have control and because the extreme slowness of a hunger strike gives others the chance to meet their political or personal demands.
