Food Deserts, Socioeconomic Status, And Health In The City Of Detroit, Nolan Booth
Food Deserts, Socioeconomic Status, And Health In The City Of Detroit, Nolan Booth
Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research
While many attribute health disparities in Detroit residents to the phenomenon of food deserts, this essay takes a closer look at such a seemingly obvious explanation and critically examines the concept of food deserts. This essay argues that the commonly held definition of food desert is inadequate for describing the complexities of a setting such as Detroit, and the true cause of the health disparities between the city and surrounding suburbs can be attributed to the lower socioeconomic status of the average Detroit resident, itself a product of racist housing policies and segregationist laws.

The Green Agent: Detroit's Urban Agriculture, Lydia Bonney
Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research
This paper examines the role that urban agriculture has played in the lives of the citizens of Detroit throughout its history. By using newspaper articles, books, scholarly journals, websites, and one self-conducted interview, this essay explores several Detroit urban agriculture programs. Analysis of past successes and failures of urban agriculture programs shows how investing in urban agriculture today may address many similar problems Detroit faces. Thanks to the city’s unique landscape, community, and spatial disparity, Detroit has the potential to become a world leader in urban agriculture.
Adolescent Dieting And Eating Disorders: Considerations For Counselors, Josephine Sticha
Adolescent Dieting And Eating Disorders: Considerations For Counselors, Josephine Sticha
Counselor Education Capstones
A crucial time for an individual’s development is during adolescence. During this developmental stage, the media, social influences, and cultural pressures contribute to a teenager’s body dissatisfaction and disordered eating habits. Nearly 22% of adolescents engage in unhealthy weight-loss behaviors such as skipping meals, fad diets, excessive exercise, and dangerous purging practices due to experiencing weight and body dissatisfaction (Whyte & Findlay, 2004). Other factors such as low self-esteem, peer pressure, and the desire for increased social status have been known to exacerbate these behaviors. Dieting practices intensify these risks and increase the likelihood of developing nutritional deficiencies and eating …

Food systems and food-related policies influence food consumption, dietary patterns, and human and environmental health. Consumers play a vital role in enhancing health and sustainability through their purchasing choices. To identify and cluster food purchasing behaviours and map relationships, a cross-sectional survey was conducted across Ireland with a sample size of 957 adults. Two-step cluster analysis, generalised linear models, and recursive partitioning and regression trees were used to elucidate adherence to identified food purchasing behavioural clusters. Three clusters (‘food quality’, ‘taste’, and ‘price’) were identified based on food purchasing priorities and statistically categorised. ‘Food quality’ members were significantly less likely …
The Involvement Of World Bank In Global Health: A Literature Review, Ahmed Saeed Alqassmi
The Involvement Of World Bank In Global Health: A Literature Review, Ahmed Saeed Alqassmi
Whittier Scholars Program
My project explores the intersection of technology, governance, and global health through the World Bank's effect on national health policies. Specifically, it examines how the Bank's financial instruments, knowledge dissemination, and governance reforms shape the health systems of growing countries. Drawing on contemporary and historical cases, the project critiques the economic-driven model, repeatedly prioritizing cost-efficiency over equity of health, showing the tensions between global financial imperatives and the need for local health. The project emphasizes the World Bank's growing role in the global health landscape by examining key reports such as the introduction of global health trust funds and Investing …

Soybean looper (SBL), Chrysodeixis includens (Walker 1858) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is one of the most damaging insect pests of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., in the mid-south region of the United States, and causes significant economic losses to cotton, sunflower, tomato, and tobacco crops in the United States, Brazil, and Argentina. Soybean production in the southern region accounted for 15.5% of the total production in the United States, and yield losses due to invertebrate pests were 5.8%, or 1.09 million metric ton, in 2022. As insecticide resistance of SBL continues to rise, the lack of alternate control strategies is a serious …

Periodontitis disproportionately affects genetic ancestral/ethnic groups. To characterize the oral microbiome from different genetic ancestral/ethnic groups, we collected 161 dental plaque samples from self-identified African Americans (AAs), Caucasian Americans (CAs), and Hispanic Americans (HAs) with clinical gingival health or biofilm-induced gingivitis on an intact periodontium. DNA was extracted from these samples, and then DNA libraries were prepared and sequenced using an Illumina NovaSeq high-throughput sequencer. We found significant differences in the diversity and abundance of microbial taxa among dental plaque samples of the AA, CA, and HA groups. We also identified unique microbial species in a self-reported ancestral/ethnic group. Moreover, …

Medically important pathogenic fungi invade vertebrate tissue and are considered primary when part of their nature life cycle is associated with an animal host and are usually able to infect immunocompetent hosts. Opportunistic fungal pathogens complete their life cycle in environmental habitats or occur as commensals within or on the vertebrate body, but under certain conditions can thrive upon infecting humans. The extent of host damage in opportunistic infections largely depends on the portal and modality of entry as well as on the host's immune and metabolic status. Diseases caused by primary pathogens and common opportunists, causing the top approximately …

Maine's Living Will Act And The Termination Of Life-Sustaining Medical Procedures, Eric R. Herlan
Maine Law Review
The Maine Legislature recently enacted a law authorizing the execution and use of living wills. The execution of a living will, essentially a document of "informed consent," allows a person to preserve in a legally recognized form his desire that, once he has been diagnosed to have a terminal medical condition and is no longer competent to make treatment decisions, the doctor should discontinue all life-sustaining procedures. With the passage of this act, Maine has joined thirty-four other states and the District of Columbia in enacting living will provisions. In addition, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws …
