Born Of Two Koreas, Of Human Blood: Monstrosity And The Discourse Of Humanity And Pacifism In The Film Bulgasari, Jungman Park Dec 2024

Born Of Two Koreas, Of Human Blood: Monstrosity And The Discourse Of Humanity And Pacifism In The Film Bulgasari, Jungman Park

Kritika Kultura

As in the Western world, Korea has a variety of mythical monsters. Among them is Bulgasari, an iron-eating monster, which will be the main topic of this paper. The monster’s name “Bulgasari” has a paradoxical meaning in Korean, which is “cannot be killed but can be killed by fire.” The meaning of the name represents the wide gamut of ambivalent identity ranging from physical to metaphorical aspects of the monster. It also provides a uniquely Korean reception and interpretation of being monstrous as distinctive from the archetypal imagery and general understanding of monstrosity as “enduring evil,” as seen in most …

Divided We Stand: Bewailing Alien-Nation In Esiaba Irobi's Why I Don't Like Philip Larkin, Niyi Akingbe Dec 2024

Divided We Stand: Bewailing Alien-Nation In Esiaba Irobi's Why I Don't Like Philip Larkin, Niyi Akingbe

Kritika Kultura

Genuine euphoria, which accompanied the birth of multi-ethnic Nigeria nation-state in 1960, has been regrettably deflated and more than offset by the onrush of political tension that has ravaged its polity in recent times. Hence, the deforming pressure of inequity in contemporary Nigeria logically stands out as a corollary of political tyranny. From the standpoint of inequity, political marginality ostensibly poses a contentious decoding as it often raises poignant questions in the philosophy of meanings embedded in Esiaba Irobi’s Why I Don’t Like Philip Larkin. In connection to this, the historical referencing of the amalgamation of northern and southern Nigeria …

Identities In Exile: Re-Membering Identities, Re-Membering The Nation In Laksmi Pamuntjak's Amba, Siti Nuraishah Amad Dec 2024

Identities In Exile: Re-Membering Identities, Re-Membering The Nation In Laksmi Pamuntjak's Amba, Siti Nuraishah Amad

Kritika Kultura

Laksmi Pamuntjak’s first novel, Amba (2012) is one of several contemporary Indonesian novels by the post-1965 generation that breaks the silence on the violent suppression of the Indonesian left in the mid-1960s. Like other recent creative responses and initiatives by Indonesian artists and civil society, Amba represents the “postmemory” of the 1965-66 events. This paper examines the modes of internal exile triggered by 1965 as portrayed in three characters in Amba and how exile disrupts and delays identity formation across different generations of Indonesians—hence, exiled identities. The history of Moluccan exile post-1950 is also crucial to the novel’s representation of …

Intercultural Theater And The Local Context Of Reception: Lady Macbeth 2016 And The South Korean Presidential Scandal, Seokhun Choi Dec 2024

Intercultural Theater And The Local Context Of Reception: Lady Macbeth 2016 And The South Korean Presidential Scandal, Seokhun Choi

Kritika Kultura

This essay investigates the relationship between intercultural performance and the socio- political context of reception by drawing parallels between Tae-sook Han’s 2016 changguk adaptation of her own Lady Macbeth and the recent presidential scandal of South Korea. The discourse of intercultural performance has focused on directorial vision and the political dynamics between the source and target cultures, while the local context of reception and its impact on the overall meaning of the work have relatively been overlooked, particularly from a diachronic perspective. Lady Macbeth revolves around the court physician’s psychotherapy sessions for the eponymous heroine, who is haunted by the …

The Concept Of Filial Piety In East Asian Confucian Culture From The Perspective Of Gadamer And Habermas, Donghyun Kim Dec 2024

The Concept Of Filial Piety In East Asian Confucian Culture From The Perspective Of Gadamer And Habermas, Donghyun Kim

Kritika Kultura

This paper examines the role of filial piety in East Asian Confucian societies as a means of drawing out political implications by showing two different standpoints elaborated by Gadamer and Habermas. The two thinkers seem to display different outlooks on the notion of filial piety in the East Asian Confucian culture: Whereas Gadamer appears to approve the practice of filial piety as keeping tradition in the specific societies, i.e., Confucian East Asian culture, Habermas rejects it by refusing the concept of tradition. The debate primarily originates from two different—though both “Western”—philosophical traditions. Gadamer endorses tradition since all human beings are …

Out And About: Migrant Bakla, Perverse Intimacies, And The Musical Of Migration In Liza Magtoto’S Care Divas, Oscar Tantoco Serquiña Jr. Dec 2024

Out And About: Migrant Bakla, Perverse Intimacies, And The Musical Of Migration In Liza Magtoto’S Care Divas, Oscar Tantoco Serquiña Jr.

Kritika Kultura

The essay analyzes the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)’s stage musical, Care Divas, for its figuration of the Filipino migrant worker as bakla and for its consequent queering of labor out-migration from the Philippines. It problematizes the notion of “perverse intimacy,” particularly through the play’s employment of gay language and performance as agentive practices of survival in the diaspora. Finally, it interrogates the play’s aestheticization of kabaklaan and migrant work through a musical drama-comedy format, which deploys song and dance, as well as laughter and sentimentality, in order to make a spectacle out of the foibles of migrant bakla, to …

“Land Is Life”: Reflections On E. San Juan, Jr., Considerations For Filipino Critical Theory, And Notes For Environmental Justice In The United States And The Philippines, Michael Joseph Viola Dec 2024

“Land Is Life”: Reflections On E. San Juan, Jr., Considerations For Filipino Critical Theory, And Notes For Environmental Justice In The United States And The Philippines, Michael Joseph Viola

Kritika Kultura

In this article, I situate E. San Juan, Jr. as a key intellectual figure in the development of Filipino Critical Theory. I explore the ways that San Juan’s interdisciplinary and dialectical analysis of capitalist totality can offer a rich intellectual landscape to address issues of global justice—particularly environmental justice for Filipino/as in the United States and in the Philippines. Building upon San Juan’s rich scholarly archive to analyze the interaction between humans and their environment, this paper foregrounds his contributions for Filipino Critical Theory as an emergent interdisciplinary theoretical framework to reflect upon where Filipino/as have been and put into …

Lessons From E. San Juan, Jr. On Resistance, Diversity, And Anti-Materialism In The Academy, Rachel Peterson, Joel Wendland Dec 2024

Lessons From E. San Juan, Jr. On Resistance, Diversity, And Anti-Materialism In The Academy, Rachel Peterson, Joel Wendland

Kritika Kultura

Throughout his astoundingly productive career, San Juan has unmasked how the intelligentsia becomes imbricated in the abuses of capitalism, colonialism and racism, and demands that those in the privileged space of the academy acknowledge and address ever-increasing inequality. He has dissected the theories and methodologies deployed in pedagogy and scholarship at different historical moments and has shown how issues of class, political economy, and (internal and international) colonialism become abstract and immaterial in the hands of intellectuals, even those who proclaim alliance with the wretched of the earth.

Post 3-11 Japanese Political Cartooning With A Satirical Bite: Non-Newspaper Cartoons And Their Potential, Ronald Stewart Dec 2024

Post 3-11 Japanese Political Cartooning With A Satirical Bite: Non-Newspaper Cartoons And Their Potential, Ronald Stewart

Kritika Kultura

Japanese political cartooning is widely considered to be weak: lacking in number and scope, and importantly, lacking in the aggression necessary to produce biting satire. A major reason for this low assessment is that the most publicly visible forum for political cartoons, the national daily newspapers, have, particularly since the 1980s, reduced the number and prominence of the cartoons they carry, and settled into using primarily mild, non-offensive cartoons. Yet there are political cartoons to be found elsewhere in Japan, in smaller circulation magazines and on the Internet. The aim of this paper is to examine these less viewed political …

Education Of Today Is The Security Of Tomorrow!: Strengthening The Capacities To Create Secure Environments With Cultural Education, Raphael Vergin, Hannah Reich Phd Dec 2024

Education Of Today Is The Security Of Tomorrow!: Strengthening The Capacities To Create Secure Environments With Cultural Education, Raphael Vergin, Hannah Reich Phd

Kritika Kultura

Human security as a people’s perspective on security with a focus on human well-being and relationship-building offers promising alternative concepts to state-centered and structure- focused security strategies. Security is more than increasing weapons, fences and survey cameras. To our understanding, it is something else and involves entirely different mindsets. It demands a people’s perspective on security in which citizenship includes the capacity to create secure surroundings. People can be supported to “learn” security and to focus on their capacities. The subjective dimensions of security, including a person’s emotional management, can be trained. This is why we argue that three dimensions …

Reconstructing Female Sex In Emergent Novels, Muhammad Alkali, Rosil Talif Dec 2024

Reconstructing Female Sex In Emergent Novels, Muhammad Alkali, Rosil Talif

Kritika Kultura

The notions of, which are at once both anti-masculinity and anti-femininity are topmost aspects of Negotiation-feminism. This new feminism emphasizes the fact that we owe feminism the power and honesty in reconciling the sexes in every prejudice against woman. The significant findings are that a very plausible answer, for example, to a previously unanswerable question has been found against domestic subjugation, and necessarily, such discourse as new novels by new writers on new woman is identifiable. The paper, therefore, argues for the need to step forward together between the sexes in the feminist aspects of exemplary Nigerian novels, demonstrating how …

Administering Tolfenamic Acid To Gilts And Sows Before Artificial Insemination Did Not Improve Litter Size But Tended To Reduce Post-Service Serum Prostaglandin F2Α Levels, Pachara Pearodwong, Nithitad Jiebna, Padet Tummaruk Dec 2024

Administering Tolfenamic Acid To Gilts And Sows Before Artificial Insemination Did Not Improve Litter Size But Tended To Reduce Post-Service Serum Prostaglandin F2Α Levels, Pachara Pearodwong, Nithitad Jiebna, Padet Tummaruk

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study examined the impact of intramuscular administration of tolfenamic acid 10 min before artificial insemination (AI) on serum PGF2α levels and reproductive performance in gilts and sows. In Experiment I, 20 gilts were divided into two groups: control (n = 10) and treatment (n = 10). Serum samples were collected 30 min before and after insemination to measure PGF2α levels. In Experiment II, 175 gilts and sows were divided into control (25 gilts and 56 sows) and treatment (16 gilts and 78 sows) groups. In both experiments, the treatment group received an intramuscular injection of 2 mg/kg tolfenamic acid …

Unquantifiable: The Impacts Of Len Vacher, Victor J. Ricchezza, Nathan D. Grawe

Numeracy

This article celebrates H.L. (Len) Vacher, the founding editor of Numeracy. While many readers of this journal are no doubt familiar with Len’s contributions here and to quantitative literacy as a practice and habit of mind, fewer are intimately familiar with Len’s history and impacts as a professor and colleague. This paper analyzes Len's contributions to the advancement of quantitative literacy through his scholarship in the journal and through the careers of former students and colleagues at the University of South Florida. The former observations originate in interview data originally collected as part of research on Len’s computational geology course …

Deepening Conditions Of Precarity In The Korean Game Industry And Collaborative Strategies To Overcome Constraints, Sangkyu Lee Dec 2024

Deepening Conditions Of Precarity In The Korean Game Industry And Collaborative Strategies To Overcome Constraints, Sangkyu Lee

Kritika Kultura

This paper examines how Korean game developers have been experiencing deepening conditions of precarity and makes a few suggestions regarding how they could overcome their structural limitations. Despite the remarkable growth in the Korean game industry, many underlying problems overshadow its success, such as labor exploitation, low wages, employment instability, and alienated labor. This paper uses a qualitative methodology to investigate the implications of the game industry market’s transition from PC online to the mobile game platform since the 2010s, which contributed to the industry’s deteriorating working condition and production system. Given this context, this study explores how the game …

From Record Contract To Artrepreneur? Musicians' Self-Management And The Changing Illusio In The Music Market, Holger Schwetter Dec 2024

From Record Contract To Artrepreneur? Musicians' Self-Management And The Changing Illusio In The Music Market, Holger Schwetter

Kritika Kultura

This article contrasts present conceptions of pop musicians’ career development with ideas from the 1960s to 1990s. It identifies two divergent key concepts: the artrepreneur and the record contract. As a counterpart, the article evaluates empirical findings from an interview study with German and US-American musicians to answer the following research question: How are concepts of career management advocated and how are they related to the musician’s practices? This research suggests that in the 1970s to 1990s, self-management was regarded as a necessary evil before getting a recording contract, which was seen as a central aim for musicians. This widespread …

The Female Monster: The Pre-Catholic Manifestation As A Response To Modern Anxiety In Selected Stories By Nick Joaquin, Tyra Delos Reyes, Xavier Selman

Kritika Kultura

Scholarship on the writings of Nick Joaquin have mostly concerned themselves with either their postcolonial resonances or the gender politics abound in the text. Tropical Gothic (1972) is widely read as an ambiguous approach toward feminism because of the depiction of the female as monstrous which has been argued to problematize its feminist possibilities, whether this depiction empowers or suppresses women in the texts. Examining the criticism of Marie Arong, Philip Holden, and Epifanio San Juan Jr., this paper asserts how existing notions of gender are able to produce a more nuanced reading of Nick Joaquin’s selected stories, specifically “Summer …

This editorial introduction to Writer in Exile/Writer in Revolt: Critical Perspectives on Carlos Bulosan (2016) sheds light on the diasporic scope of Bulosan’s literary imagination and the literary scholarship on his diverse body of writing. Writer in Exile/Writer in Revolt gathers for the first time nearly sixty years of literary criticism by scholars in the United States and the Philippines on Bulosan, a pioneering twentieth-century Filipino writer in the United States. The editorial introduction highlights the ways in which Writer in Exile/Writer in Revolt documents the unfolding of Bulosan’s radical literary imagination which straddles the colonial and neocolonial periods of …

Culture As Contradiction In Urban Regeneration: Sanitization, Commodification, And Critical Resistance In Liverpool One, Niamh Malone Dec 2024

Culture As Contradiction In Urban Regeneration: Sanitization, Commodification, And Critical Resistance In Liverpool One, Niamh Malone

Kritika Kultura

This essay uses critiques of the homogenization of urban regeneration practices over recent decades to examine Liverpool ONE (L1), a privately owned, open-air retail development in the center of the historic city. The argument considers the role of a particular concept of culture in enabling major projects, which frequently involve the conversion of public resources into private assets, to be projected in a benign light. Countering this trend is a core mission for New York-based activist artist, Reverend Billy and his Church of Stop Shopping Choir; an inspiration to young artists in Liverpool. Since opening, L1 has functioned as a …

Disobedient Cultures: Art, Politics, And Resurgent Hope, Malcom Miles Dec 2024

Disobedient Cultures: Art, Politics, And Resurgent Hope, Malcom Miles

Kritika Kultura

When political change is remote the only prospect for change is in the realm of imagination. Herbert Marcuse responds to this in his last book, The Aesthetic Dimension (1978) after the failure of revolt in Paris in 1968. He argues that although art cannot change the world as such it can change how the world is apprehended. Thus art’s imaginative potential is part of a wider pursuit of freedom. The paper argues that the situation is bleaker today than in the 1970s. Neoliberalism enforces a regime of consumerism even more now than then, and operates globally. Still, hope reappears in …

Athens' Shadows, Victor Merriman Dec 2024

Athens' Shadows, Victor Merriman

Kritika Kultura

This introductory essay attempts to communicate a sense of the articles and artist pages published in this Forum Kritika on Radical Cultural Responses to Crises in Urban Democracy, in the context of a symposium during which some of them were first argued. The contributors theorize relationships between art and protest, and the nature of performance, as well as critiquing interventionist performance projects, among dispatches from the front line of performance as public engagement. It also seeks to convey a sense of how culture—and especially performance—interacts, in Britain, with Project Austerity (2010-present). As culture and cultural workers, respond to neoliberalization, they …

This Will Not Be Generative, Sehrish Naudhani Dec 2024

This Will Not Be Generative, Sehrish Naudhani

Intersections: Critical Issues in Education

This Will Not Be Generative by Dixa Ramírez-D’Oleo critiques Western feminist narratives, revealing how concepts like generativity and symbiosis often disguise violence against Black and Indigenous communities. Through analysis of works by feminists such as Donna Haraway and references to films like Get Out and Midsommar, Ramírez-D’Oleo argues that Black and Indigenous lives are cyclically exploited to uphold white supremacy. Rather than depicting these communities as mere victims, she emphasizes their resilience and acts of resistance. This review underscores Ramírez-D’Oleo's call to rethink the narratives shaping our understanding of race, ecology, and feminism, making it a critical read for …

Research in progress for CRIJ 1301: Introduction to Criminal Justice

Faculty Mentor: Stefanie LeMaire

This manuscript began from a response to a discussion prompt in my Introduction to Criminal Justice course where students were asked to discuss some of the issues facing inmates upon release from incarceration. Tristan completed outside research on the relationship between education and recidivism among incarcerated individuals. More specifically, she wanted to discuss the barriers to successful reintegration and programs that have been introduced to address these concerns. Most offenders will be released from incarceration, and they will reenter our society. There is a …

Lgbq Student Development In Community Service, Julia Leavitt Dec 2024

Lgbq Student Development In Community Service, Julia Leavitt

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

Research has addressed how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or queer (LGBQ) student identity development is largely shaped by external factors such as perceptions of campus support and inclusivity (Schmidt, Miles, & Welsh, 2011; Swank & Fahs, 2012; Tomlinson & Fassinger, 2003). In addition, literature has illustrated a positive correlation among student leaders involved in identity-based organizations and activities that entice self-authorship, meaning making, and leadership development (Renn, 2007; Renn & Bilodeau, 2005). However, there is a finite amount of research focused on leadership and identity development among queer- identified students’ involvement in non-queer specific activities. Among best practices in student affairs, …
