The Chief Diversity Officer, Amanda Marie C. Gadian, Lauren E. Van Fossen, Ariana Chini

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

A heightened consciousness of racial injustice across higher education and an increasingly diverse student population have pushed institutions to consider how they are responding to these changes. An emerging solution has been to establish a Chief Diversity Officer to address issues of racial climate on college campuses. This article analyzes the current literature on Chief Diversity Officers in higher education in order to describe the key roles and challenges of the position. Recommendations for institutions and executive leadership are provided to design and implement a position with the organizational structure and power to serve the needs of diverse student populations …

The Moderating Effect Of Life History Strategies On The Relationship Between Dark Triad Traits And Delayed Gratification, Jisook Park, Whitney Whitaker, Sydney Hicks Dec 2024

The Moderating Effect Of Life History Strategies On The Relationship Between Dark Triad Traits And Delayed Gratification, Jisook Park, Whitney Whitaker, Sydney Hicks

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Dark Triad (DT) traits are often used to account for individuals’ impulsivity and inability to delay gratification, postponing an immediate reward to receive a greater outcome at a later time. Life-history theory (LHT) provides additional theoretical framework to understand our choices related to delayed gratification. LHT posits individuals develop life-history strategies (LHS) shaped by their environmental cues. Individuals using slow LHS are believed to invest more in maturation in life whereas those with fast LHS prefer immediate rewards. Despite insights shared from past studies on DT and delayed gratification, inconsistencies in findings remain. The goal of the current study is …

The Capacity To Be Content: Aspirations And Young Adult Catholics In Singapore, Jayeel Serrano Cornelio Dec 2024

The Capacity To Be Content: Aspirations And Young Adult Catholics In Singapore, Jayeel Serrano Cornelio

Kritika Kultura

Drawing from interviews with young adult Catholics in Singapore, this article discusses aspirations in terms of the capacity to be content. For my informants, the capacity to be content has three aspects: the pursuit of happiness, the questioning of Singapore’s incessant drive for economic growth, and the neglect of those left-behind. Taken collectively, these nuances show that the aspirations of young adult Catholics are effectively a moral critique of the social and economic state of affairs in the city-state. The capacity to be content also informs these young adults’ decision to be involved in welfare activities or even be employed …

Hàn Mặc Tử (1912-1940): A New Moon For The Season Of The New Evangelization In Vietnamese Catholicism, Hưng Trung Phạm Sj Dec 2024

Hàn Mặc Tử (1912-1940): A New Moon For The Season Of The New Evangelization In Vietnamese Catholicism, Hưng Trung Phạm Sj

Kritika Kultura

Since its arrival to Vietnam, Catholicism has often been known or accused as either heterodox religion or religion of superstition. Efforts to inculturate the Christian faith into Vietnamese cultures have begun from early missionaries in Vietnam in the early seventeenth century to church leadership in Vietnam today. At the early twentieth century, the poetry of Hàn Mặc Tử (1912 – 1940) has demonstrated a new level of inculturation where the Christian faith no longer remains at the level of “superficial adaptation” but has become a principle that animates, directs, and unifies Vietnamese cultures, transforming and remaking it so as to …

Interactive Meaning Potentials In Weight-Loss Web-Advertising: The Female Body In Crisis, Emily Lau Kui Ling Dec 2024

Interactive Meaning Potentials In Weight-Loss Web-Advertising: The Female Body In Crisis, Emily Lau Kui Ling

Kritika Kultura

The common saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words” is no longer questioned in the twenty-first century where information is extensively rendered in visual terms. The rise of digital capture devices and online social media presumes that visual culture is head- ing towards greater influence in every aspect of life. This paper explores the ways visual representations attract the viewer’s attention, and based on Jewitt and Oyama’s analytical framework of visual social semiotics seeks to understand the meaning-making potentials of weight-loss advertising. Three key factors: distance, contact, and point of view are shown to be crucial in creating complex …

The Catholic Church In The Philippine Public Sphere, Ranilo B. Hermida Dec 2024

The Catholic Church In The Philippine Public Sphere, Ranilo B. Hermida

Kritika Kultura

Whether religion has a place in the public sphere is a complex issue. Many thinkers believed that the rationalization process of modernity would result in secularization and banish religion into the private sphere. Religion has not only survived; it has even taken an active role in the political affairs of the state. This has been the case in countries like the Philippines where the publicity and activism of the Catholic hierarchy in the political public sphere of the country have been sustained and to some extent dominant. Said publicity and activism are carried out in the name of religion and …

Global Exchange: Glimpses Of An 18th Century Colonial Kitchen In Manila, Rene B. Javellana Sj Dec 2024

Global Exchange: Glimpses Of An 18th Century Colonial Kitchen In Manila, Rene B. Javellana Sj

Kritika Kultura

It seems self-evident that Spanish cuisine influenced Philippine cuisine. The similarity in nomenclature, some with toponyms, suggests such connection. To imagine that Spanish- influenced dishes that Filipinos consume in today were exactly the same in the 18th century is to be oblivious of the complex evolution of Hispanic dishes, the result of colonial exchange and negotiation. The 1768 inventory of the Colegio de San José’s kitchen, an otherwise laconic list, is interpreted and brought to life with help of other studies, like that on food migrants by scholars, the late Doreen G. Fernandez, Dr. Isagani Medina and Corazon Alvina, which …

The Nigerian Diaspora And National Development: Contributions, Challenges, And Lessons From Other Countries, Sharkdam Wapmuk, Oluwatooni Akinkuotu, Vincent Ibonye Dec 2024

The Nigerian Diaspora And National Development: Contributions, Challenges, And Lessons From Other Countries, Sharkdam Wapmuk, Oluwatooni Akinkuotu, Vincent Ibonye

Kritika Kultura

The paper, in general terms, clarifies and discusses the link between the Diaspora and the issue of development in general, and, in specific terms examines the role as well as the huge potential of the Nigerian Diaspora in national development. Drawing lessons from the historical as well as contemporary experiences of some countries such as India, China, Philippines, Italy, and Ghana, the paper argues that the Diaspora can be an agent of national development. In analyzing the different Diasporas and remittances from Diasporas from the different countries, the paper took cognizance of the fact that they are not similar to …

Carlos Bulosan And A Collective Outline For Critical Filipina And Filipino Studies, Michael Viola, Valerie Francisco, Amanda Solomon Amorao Dec 2024

Carlos Bulosan And A Collective Outline For Critical Filipina And Filipino Studies, Michael Viola, Valerie Francisco, Amanda Solomon Amorao

Kritika Kultura

As an activist-scholar formation called the Critical Filipina and Filipino Studies Collective (CFFSC) we take the position that Carlos Bulosan is indispensable for an emerging multidisciplinary field that is equipped in defying the neoliberal onslaught against ethnic studies in the United States and the unbridled racism most evident in the ongoing US “wars of terrorism” that haunt people of color throughout the world. We take seriously Bulosan’s insight that “[I]f the writer has any significance, [s]he should write about the world in which [s]he lives: interpret his [her] time and envision the future through his [her] knowledge of historical reality” …

Beyond The Innocence Of Globalization: The Abiding Necessity Of Carlos Bulosan’S Anti-Imperialist Imagination, Tim Libretti Dec 2024

Beyond The Innocence Of Globalization: The Abiding Necessity Of Carlos Bulosan’S Anti-Imperialist Imagination, Tim Libretti

Kritika Kultura

This essay analyzes Carlos Bulosan’s writing in terms of the way he works to develop an aesthetic that comprehends and cognitively maps the repetitive dynamics of US and global colonial capitalism. More precisely, the essay examines how Bulosan’s aesthetic practice both grapples with the question of how an individual and collective consciousness can grasp the systemic processes that condition experience and also how it fosters that consciousness in the way it represents the relationships among experience, the larger class and colonial dynamics that produce that experience, and the ideological processes that intervene in our comprehension of those dynamics. In developing …

The Manong’S “Songs Of Love”: Gendered And Sexualized Dimensions Of Carlos Bulosan’S Literature And Labor Activism, Amanda Solomon Amorao Dec 2024

The Manong’S “Songs Of Love”: Gendered And Sexualized Dimensions Of Carlos Bulosan’S Literature And Labor Activism, Amanda Solomon Amorao

Kritika Kultura

This article takes the 2013 passage of California Assembly Bill 123, which mandates instruction on the Filipino contribution to the state’s farm workers movement in public education curriculum, as an occasion to analyze the gendered and sexualized dimensions of Carlos Bulosan’s literature and labor activism. The article considers the texts and contexts of America is in the Heart and Bulosan’s short story “As Long as the Grass Shall Grow” to demonstrate how Bulosan’s materialist, dialectical analysis also involves an incisive critique of the intersections of class, race, gender, and sexuality. As Bulosan narrates the proletariat struggles of the manong generation, …

Writers And Exile: Carlos Bulosan And Dolores Stephens Feria, Monica Feria

Kritika Kultura

This paper explores the links between two writers in exile – Carlos Bulosan, a Filipino migrant in the United States, and Dolores Stephens Feria, an American migrant in the Philippines. Its aim is to gather more insight into the “condition of exile” as a framework for understanding writers and literary traditions. For the author, being the daughter of Dolores, this is both a personal and academic exploration.

Performing Elusive Homecomings: Mobility, Embodiment, And Diasporic Filipino Youth, Martin F. Manalansan Iv Dec 2024

Performing Elusive Homecomings: Mobility, Embodiment, And Diasporic Filipino Youth, Martin F. Manalansan Iv

Kritika Kultura

The Filipino global diaspora has precipitated the circulation of embodied modes of identification and belonging. This paper focuses on the experiences of Filipino young people who were born and/or raised abroad, and who have returned to the Philippines to seek fame and economic mobility in the entertainment industry. These migrant hopefuls, unlike older counterparts, enact the material tensions and semantic contradictions that form part of popular discourse around life abroad. As such, institutional media practices and mass audience perceptions mirror such conditions and create shifting systems of valuation around such things as skin color, accent, and bodily comportment. To respond …

Performing Global At Intelstar: Figuring The Call Center On Manila Stage, Sir Anril Pineda Tiatco Dec 2024

Performing Global At Intelstar: Figuring The Call Center On Manila Stage, Sir Anril Pineda Tiatco

Kritika Kultura

Set in Makati, the central business district of the National Capital Region, Welcome to IntelStar is a monodrama satirizing the call center industry in the Philippines. The performance is an exemplar in positioning a diasporic consequence of globalization vis-à-vis nationalism because it calls on a national sentiment to the extent that the play illustrates resistance to globalization’s economic and neoliberal attachments, often perceived as the destructive force of cultural diversity and uniqueness. In relation, the performance used a recurring trope in Philippine culture, which is called in the essay as the Americanization issue: the conception of the Filipino/a as a …

Beyond The Color Line: Intersectional Considerations In Chuah Guat Eng’S Fiction, Wai Chew Sim Dec 2024

Beyond The Color Line: Intersectional Considerations In Chuah Guat Eng’S Fiction, Wai Chew Sim

Kritika Kultura

This essay argues that the work of Malaysian-Chinese author Chuah Guat Eng gives pause to the culturalism that dominates literary analysis. Articulated primarily through identity politics (the politics of recognition), culturalism’s self- understanding keeps at a distance other forms of social justice commitments including class struggle. However, Chuah spotlights their intersectionality in Malaysia and enjoins us to combine the two – to see the native population’s demand for economic parity and rural development as coterminous in some respects with the demands for recognition made by settler communities. In particular, Chuah’s Echoes of Silence (1994) points to the commensurability between socialist …

Phantom In Paradise: A Philippine Presence In Hollywood Cinema, Joel David Dec 2024

Phantom In Paradise: A Philippine Presence In Hollywood Cinema, Joel David

Kritika Kultura

The Philippines’ experience with its last foreign occupant, the US, resulted in an entire clutch of problematic “special relations” that, coupled with the country’s responses to the challenges of self-government, ultimately led to a global dispersal of the population, effectively turning the Philippines into the major Asian nation arguably most reliant on its citizens’ overseas remittances. This paper takes the position that diasporic Filipinos, for a variety of reasons starting with the effectiveness of maintaining unintrusive presences in alien cultures (including the acceptance of menial positions), have possibly developed and have enabled others to perceive them as silent and discreet …

Conflicting Counter-Hegemonies?: The Dramaturgy Of James Connolly And Sean O'Casey, James Moran Dec 2024

Conflicting Counter-Hegemonies?: The Dramaturgy Of James Connolly And Sean O'Casey, James Moran

Kritika Kultura

This paper examines the radicalism of James Connolly through the optic of theatre and performance. In particular, I test his only extant play-script—written shortly before his death—against the hostile critique of the dramatist Seán O’Casey. Despite the biographical similarities between these two men, O’Casey expressed deep disappointment with the climax of Connolly’s career as a labor agitator, organizer and revolutionary socialist, criticizing him for having travelled from socialism to nationalism, a journey which O’Casey had seemingly made in reverse. I offer a rereading of Connolly’s play to show that the situation is more complex than that envisaged by O’Casey. Although …

Heroes With Their Hands In The Air: Memory And Commemoration In The Contemporary Documentary Theater, Sheila Mccormick Dec 2024

Heroes With Their Hands In The Air: Memory And Commemoration In The Contemporary Documentary Theater, Sheila Mccormick

Kritika Kultura

Documentary theatre has the capacity to confront and challenge its audience; however, there are occasions when examples from the genre avoid confrontation. These examples might not promote ideas consistent with the political status quo; neither, however, do they challenge it. This paper examines the ability of documentary theatre to move between two extremes: of challenging dominant power structures, or reinforcing the political or social status quo. It contrasts two documentary theatre performances that both took place on the fringes of mainstream theatre production, and which both explore the same social event: Bloody Sunday and the Saville Inquiry. In doing so, …

Beyond Verbatim: Dramatizing The Search For Jean Mcconville, Bill Hopkinson, Jane Mcnulty Dec 2024

Beyond Verbatim: Dramatizing The Search For Jean Mcconville, Bill Hopkinson, Jane Mcnulty

Kritika Kultura

In December 1972, as the bloodiest year of the conflict in Northern Ireland drew to its close, Jean McConville, a thirty-seven-year-old widowed mother of ten, was taken from her home in Belfast. A gang of men and women had entered the family home in the Divis Flats area of the city, and dragged Jean from her bath. In front of her terrified children, they bundled her into a van and took her away. Her family never saw her again. Her body was buried, some sixty odd miles from where she was taken, and for almost thirty years, the IRA denied …

Global Theme, Local Form: Testimony, Storytelling And Thailand: What's Love Got To Do With It?, Brian Desmond Dec 2024

Global Theme, Local Form: Testimony, Storytelling And Thailand: What's Love Got To Do With It?, Brian Desmond

Kritika Kultura

This essay is a reflection on the play, Thailand! What’s Love Got To Do With It?, by Máirtín de Cógáin and Brian Desmond, first produced in Cork, Ireland, in 2007. Thailand is both documentary play and metaphor: documentary in that it dramatizes an analysis of perspectives expressed by Irish sex tourists, and metaphor in the way that this analysis reflects the hysterical electioneering (from both government and media) during the 2007 Irish general election which saw Fianna Fáil’s Celtic Tiger government elected for a third term. A reflection on practice, this essay uses postcolonial and narrative theory to discuss Thailand …

Marking "Austerity": Critique, Purpose And Perfromance, Victor Merriman Dec 2024

Marking "Austerity": Critique, Purpose And Perfromance, Victor Merriman

Kritika Kultura

This essay attempts to mark the current phase of capitalist neoliberalism, in order to create a space for articulation, in both senses of the word: there is a need both to articulate, as in to connect together ideas, events and their consequences, and to articulate, as in to voice the dynamics, contradictions, and injustices to which they give rise. As Shock Doctrine (Klein 2007), draped in Austerity’s mantle, enters the Common European Home, articulation as voice is an attempt to shatter, not silence, but the white noise generated by the mantra, “There Is No Alternative” (TINA). “Marking ‘Austerity’” sets out …

Higher Than The Original Stands The Translation: Translating Heidegger Into Filipino, Remmon E. Barbaza Dec 2024

Higher Than The Original Stands The Translation: Translating Heidegger Into Filipino, Remmon E. Barbaza

Kritika Kultura

This paper is a reflection on the author’s experience of translating Martin Heidegger into Filipino. It first addresses the questions of principles underlying the act of translation, such as those of fidelity (to both source and target languages, original author and translator), as well as the role of the translator as an intermediary between the original author and the readers. Then it demonstrates examples of his experience of translating selected key terms and passages in Heidegger—such as sein, stellen, Ereignis, and their cognates—indicating the difficulties as well as the challenges that arise in the work of translation. A notable problem …

A Pouring Out Of Words: Das Kapital In Bahasa Indonesia Translation, Ramon Guillermo Dec 2024

A Pouring Out Of Words: Das Kapital In Bahasa Indonesia Translation, Ramon Guillermo

Kritika Kultura

Due to the recent global crises, Karl Marx’s fundamental work, Das Kapital (1867), has seen a resurgent interest. This renewed interest has also resulted in the production of several new translations of this work into various languages. It was quite a coincidence therefore that the first complete translation into Bahasa Indonesia was published as Kapital: Sebuah Kritik Ekonomi Politik in Jakarta by the Hasta Mitra Press in 2004. The translator was Oey Hay Djoen (1929-2008), an activist and former political prisoner on Buru island during the Soeharto Orde Baru regime. According to Oey, he used Ben Fowkes’s English translation for …
