The U.S. Southern Mothers Perspective On Affection, Destiny M. Rose
The U.S. Southern Mothers Perspective On Affection, Destiny M. Rose
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative research study utilizes Murray Bowen’s Family Systems Theory and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s Intersectionality Theory to examine how ten mothers residing in what is identified as the U.S. Deep South (Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina) perceive affection shown to their children by adults outside of their nuclear family. Additionally, this study considers the influence social class plays in how parents in the Deep South navigate and negotiate social and cultural norms when it comes to affection displays shown to their children. Data was collected using thematic analysis to describe how parents in parts of the Deep South perceive affection shown …
There And Back Again: Nick Adams' Masculine Journey From 'Indian Camp' To 'Fathers And Sons.', Michael F. Basista
There And Back Again: Nick Adams' Masculine Journey From 'Indian Camp' To 'Fathers And Sons.', Michael F. Basista
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In the following paper, I discuss how Ernest Hemingway’s hyper-masculine persona influences how his male characters are interpreted by some readers. More specifically, I take the character of Nick Adams and look at him as being a representation of one of Hemingway’s male characters that diverges from the hyper-masculine persona that Hemingway had created for himself. To do so, I focus on eight of Hemingway’s short stories, with those being “Indian Camp,” “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” “Ten Indians,” “The End of Something,” “The Three-Day Blow,” “The Battler,” “Cross-Country Snow,” and “Fathers and Sons.” The development of Nick Adams …
Meeting The Moment: Seeking A Symbiosis Of Economic Theory And Practice In Times Of Crisis, Sallie Taylor Manning
Meeting The Moment: Seeking A Symbiosis Of Economic Theory And Practice In Times Of Crisis, Sallie Taylor Manning
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
By their nature, crises upset the status quo and shake apart the ways of being and doing for individuals, families, communities, nations, institutions, and governments. This research seeks to identify the ways in which times of crisis led to changes in high school economics curriculum. The Georgia Performance Standards for high school economics curriculum were examined over a 23-year period to determine the extent to which three national and international crises led to changes in economics curriculum. A historiography was created for each of three crises, September 11, 2001 (9/11), Hurricane Katrina, and the Great Recession of 2008. The Georgia …

White Woman In A Black Barbershop: Examining Racial Literacy Through Epistemic Curricula Spaces, Megan Paulk
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The following study is an autoethnography of the researcher, a White Mother of a Black Family (WMOBF). Follow her journey as she examines her racial literacy through the construction of Season Two of her podcast White Women in a Black Barbershop, where she is conversing with three other WMOBF who geographically grew up in the same small town in Maryland. The podcast analysis method is introduced as a method of data collection and analysis. The results of the study are the creation of eight epistemic curricula spaces. These spaces contain movement, are not linear, and are not accessible to all. …

Joy In The Focus, Focus On The Joy, Alicia Cully
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This body of work, Joy in the Focus, Focus on the Joy is an engendered unspoken symbolic language generated from the handwritten words of the English language that are defined or viewed with positive connotations. These symbols are meant to spread the feelings each word embodies with what resonates with the priori or memory of the audience. The symbolic language is a key for an individual to make their own connections with how the symbol’s meaning makes them feel,, resulting in an openly welcome invitation to reach a focused joy in connecting with the displayed feeling(s). My drive to create …
Their Country: Black Women, Three Chords, And The Truth, Dmetri J. Smith
Their Country: Black Women, Three Chords, And The Truth, Dmetri J. Smith
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Country music has long overlooked and at times outright erased the contributions of people of African descent. The past and present contributions of Black women are particularly ignored. Country music— a racially contested space centered in Nashville, Tennessee— is imbued with themes referencing the “good ole days” that were dangerous times for anyone who was not White, male, cisgender, and heterosexual. The genre has only become slightly more welcoming to those who are not part of the dominant class. And yet, there are Black women who feel called to use country music as their storytelling medium. My research shows …

Examining The Impact And Implementation Of Protected Administrative Time On Provider Well-Being And Service Delivery Indicators Within A Multi-State Network Of Primary Care Medical Practices, Lauren Junge-Maughan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Background:
Primary care is integral to achieving high-quality health outcomes for the population and decreasing healthcare costs. However, primary care clinicians suffer from conflicting demands, impossible expectations, and burdensome processes. With burnout and mental fatigue increasing, leadership must find innovative programs to implement in their organizations. This mixed-methods research study assessed the impact of one such intervention, protected administrative time (PRAT), on improving provider well-being.
Purpose:
The first aim was to evaluate the association of PRAT on the service delivery indicators of primary care clinicians’ productivity, average appointments per day, patient satisfaction (likelihood to recommend), clinician time to the next …
The Schooling Experiences Of First-Generation Afro Caribbean Women Educated (Schooled) In The Southeastern United States, Sonya Griffin
The Schooling Experiences Of First-Generation Afro Caribbean Women Educated (Schooled) In The Southeastern United States, Sonya Griffin
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
To address the lack of culturally specific research on subgroups of Black women in the educational environment and Haitian immigrant women in U.S. educational institutions, the study documented the educational experiences of four Haitian women who immigrated to the United States and obtained degrees in U.S. universities. Using a narrative interview research design, this qualitative study collected data from four Haitian immigrant women who were first-generation college graduates through individual interviews and a focus group discussion. Data analysis involved coding to identify emerging themes. Using the two tenets of Black feminist theory, lived experiences as knowledge and intersectionality, the research …
Hillbilly Bands: Southern Rock's Impact On Southern Identity In The 1970s, John H. Hartman
Hillbilly Bands: Southern Rock's Impact On Southern Identity In The 1970s, John H. Hartman
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Music has always been a conduit in which its artists are able to voice their views, influences, desires, and heartbreaks to a wide audience. Southern Rock is no different. The emergence and popularity of the genre in the 1970s is not a coincidence, but rather a reflection of the South during this time. The South as a whole was changing due to the passage of the Civil Rights Act, ending Jim Crow Laws and denouncing racial oppression throughout the nation. For the South, This meant drastic changes to their society and the slow recognition of the racially oppressive ideals that …
Imperial Adolescence In Kenzaburō Ōe's "Prize Stock", D'Yanna Coffey
Imperial Adolescence In Kenzaburō Ōe's "Prize Stock", D'Yanna Coffey
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The study of adolescents in Postcolonial Studies is a growing area of research. This thesis defines Imperial Adolescence, a critical framework that be used to examine the development of adolescents in imperial settings, applies it to Kenzaburō Ōe’s “Prize Stock,” and encourages postcolonial scholars to add to a steadily discourse. “Prize Stock” tells the story of a black American airman captive in a rural Japanese village, and Imperial Adolescence is applied to the novella’s adolescent narrator. The four stages of Imperial Adolescence (Childhood, Early Adolescence, Puberty, and Middle Adolescence) are used to trace the impact of Postcolonial elements (such as …

“Why Blackness, Black Girl?:” Discovering Multilocal Blackness In Wonderful Adventures Of Mrs. Seacole In Many Lands And Americanah, Sydney A. Ware
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In “Why Blackness, Black Girl?” I argue that as a consequence of imperialism, Western Blackness has an interdependent relationship with whiteness, resulting in the domination of Western Blackness over non-Western Blackness. Tensions between both groups are usually portrayed by Western media as divisive. I pose Multilocality as a theory to reconcile this tension. I use Taiye Selasi's concept of the multilocal, and her Three Markers (3 R’s) to identify where hybridized identities are local to and how they can connect to each local space. I expand Selasi’s concept into a theory called Multilocality, and added a fourth marker that I …
So Much Courage: Hemingway, War, And Rape, Tracie Nicolai
So Much Courage: Hemingway, War, And Rape, Tracie Nicolai
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Weaving together Ernest Hemingway’s biography and literature with her own life, Tracie Nicolai analyzes the impact of Hemingway’s life and literature in the classroom and outside of it. War trauma is analyzed in relation to rape and its lasting effects, paralleling the impacts and the traumas that shape our philosophies and our lives. Nicolai explores how Hemingway wrote of war and his own injuries, and she discusses the distance evident between his own life experiences and his subsequent fiction writings. In separate vignettes in each chapter, Nicolai writes of her experience as a rape survivor and the lasting impact on …

A Muse In A Minefield: Poets, Pedagogy, And The Practice Of Liberation, Fran Dundore
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this poetic inquiry I share my experiences as a public educator within the contexts of aesthetics, identity, and power. Reflecting and inquiring poetically on nearly thirty years of public practice and leadership, I consider my personal experiences and conversations with current teachers and call them into action to speak up about the ramifications of this current political climate on their curriculum and their pedagogy. I focus on the works of poets and theorists such as Oliver (1986, 1992, 1998 & 2011), Whitman (1855, 1892), Hughes (1951) Counts (1932), Rosenblatt (1978 &1995), Freire (1970, 1974 & 1978), and Greene (1973, …
The Effects Of External Load Type And Eccentric Tempo On Hamstring Electromygraphy During Unilateral And Bilateral Prone Hamstring Exercise, Toraya Hughes
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Isotonic hamstring exercises are employed to mitigate the risk of a future hamstring strain and after strain, incorporated into return-to-play protocols. However, research has negated leg dominance's influence on muscle recruitment and exercise form. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare muscle recruitment between the dominant (DOM) and non-dominant (nonDOM) during prone hamstring exercise (PHSE) variations. METHODS: Twenty trained participants aged 18 – 33 (M = 23 years, SD = 3 years) completed familiarization and experimental protocols > 72 hours apart. Participants underwent four PHSE variations that differed by load type (barbell vs. dumbbell), exercise strategy (bilateral …
Can We Talk About Sex? Exploring Teacher Preparedness Of Comprehensive Sex Education Delivery In Southeast Georgia, Tanya Jules
Can We Talk About Sex? Exploring Teacher Preparedness Of Comprehensive Sex Education Delivery In Southeast Georgia, Tanya Jules
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In 2022, the CDC estimated that youth and adolescents between the ages of 15 through 24 accounted for almost half of the 2.5 million cases of sexually transmitted infections in the United States. Teachers who deliver accurate sexual health information increase the accessibility of pertinent details to adolescents during crucial years of cognitive development, which could decrease adverse sexual health outcomes among youth. The utilization of a Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) curriculum addresses all parts of sexual health by covering topics ranging from physical, biological, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. However, educators who provide sexual health education must follow …

Journal Article
Faculty happiness is a key factor influencing productivity, engagement, and institutional commitment. This study examined the level of happiness among faculty members at the University of the Philippines Los Baños using an adopted instrument designed to yield a happiness index score. The self-report survey assessed dimensions such as psychological well-being, time balance, workplace environment, and career growth opportunities. Descriptive and correlation analyses were conducted to explore associations between faculty happiness and various personal and work- related factors. Specifically, Spearman's rank-order and point-biserial correlation coefficients were used to correlate happiness score with ordinal and dichotomous factors, respectively. Findings indicate that faculty …
Service-Learning And Student Success: Are Underrepresented Students Gaining The Same Benefits?, Sondra Bellard
Service-Learning And Student Success: Are Underrepresented Students Gaining The Same Benefits?, Sondra Bellard
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Service-learning (SL) has increasingly been used as an educational tool based on the theory of experiential learning, which states that knowledge is developed through experience (Kohl, 1984). SL provides students with the opportunity to connect course work to the community leading to a better understanding of the content. Previous research has shown that SL is associated with positive academic, social, and civic outcomes. However, many of the previous studies fail to provide demographic information on the participants, specifically their ethnicities. There has also been a lack of quantitative studies that examine how first-generation students perceive SL and its benefits. The …
The Othered Mothers: Monstrous Motherhood In Dracula, Dawn, And Nightbitch, Makay C. Walsh
The Othered Mothers: Monstrous Motherhood In Dracula, Dawn, And Nightbitch, Makay C. Walsh
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines the monstrous mothers in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), Octavia E. Butler’s Dawn (1987), and Rachel Yoder’s Nightbitch (2021). Stoker’s Dracula serves as the foundational, or “mother,” text in terms of the model monstrous mothers: Dracula and Lucy Westenra. Dawn and Nightbitch provide more contemporary examples of monstrous mothers, yet they are different enough to contrast each other: Lilith in Dawn must navigate motherhood living amongst an alien species, and Nightbitch is a stay-at-home mom who starts turning into a dog. This thesis also establishes 7 Markers of Monstrous Motherhood as a critical framework for classifying monstrous mothers. …
What Is It Really: The Role Of Intergroup Threat In Educational Decision-Making, Kyle A. Walker
What Is It Really: The Role Of Intergroup Threat In Educational Decision-Making, Kyle A. Walker
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Perceptions of intergroup threat correlate with prejudice against Black Americans (Iyer, 2022). For example, White Americans tend to move out of communities they dominate when the population of Black Americans increases in those communities beyond a “tolerable” rate due to a perceived threat to the neighborhood's safety and resources; this phenomenon is known as White Flight (Grodzins, 1958; Zou & Cheryan, 2022). This exodus of White Americans predicts urban decay, which affects the public school systems in those areas, leading to poorer public services and higher dropout rates among those in the now racially segregated neighborhoods (Mayer & Jencks, 1989; …

From Lived Experiences To Social Activism: Latino Fraternity Brothers Critical Service To The Latinx Community, Regina L. Suriel, James Martinez, Christian Bello Escobar, Jamie L. Workman
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Colleges and universities are seeing growth of Latinx students actively engaged in Greek life. In this study, six Latino participants share their testimonios as members of different Chapters of a Latinx Greek Letter Organization (LGLO) nestled within Predominantly White Institutions located in the state of Georgia, USA. Informed by LatCrit theory, this qualitative study uses member’s testimonios to shed light on their varied and sometimes politically charged and racist lived experiences. The researchers draw on these experiences to show how the LGLO supported these members’ character and leadership development and their desire and commitment to critical service and socially just …

Understanding The Role Of Cultural Competence In Peer Mentorship Programs For International Students: A Student Development Theory Perspective, Nikheal Patel, Daniel Calhoun, Steven Tolman
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
International students often face challenges while pursuing higher education in a foreign country. These challenges can negatively impact their sense of belonging and community, resulting in social disconnection. Examining the role of culturally competent peer mentoring programs for international students can foster a sense of belonging among international students. Peer mentorship may provide international students with a supportive environment and community, helping them navigate university life. In contrast, student development theory can inform the design of programs and services that support international students in their transition to American higher education. These strategies can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment …
From Private To Public: Lateral Transfer Student Experiences, Melissa P. Stough, Diane C. Elliott
From Private To Public: Lateral Transfer Student Experiences, Melissa P. Stough, Diane C. Elliott
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
The phenomenon of student movement between higher education institutions has received considerable attention due to its widespread occurrence and impact on academic trajectories. While extensive research has focused on vertical transfer, such as transitions from community colleges to four-year institutions, less scrutiny has been directed towards lateral transfer, involving shifts between institutions at similar academic levels. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the factors influencing lateral transfer, specifically from private four-year colleges to public four-year institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened interest in this understudied area, with indications of increased lateral transfers in its aftermath. Leveraging data …

Predicting Retention, Progression, And Graduation Of First-Time Freshmen Students, Brynn L. Munro, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer, Antonio P. Gutierrez De Blume, Pamela Wells
Journal of Higher Education & Student Affairs
Currently, roughly one third of college students fit the federal government’s definition of first-generation college student status, meaning that neither parent has earned a baccalaureate degree (RTI International, 2023). This study utilized archival data at an access institution in the southeastern United States in a causal comparative study using binary logistic regression analysis to determine if first-generation college student status, gender, socioeconomic status, and academic preparedness are predictors for six-year graduation rates. Findings from this quantitative study determined that gender, socioeconomic status, and academic preparedness were significant predictors for graduation within six years of matriculation at the institution. A future …

Use Or Not: A Qualitative Study On The User Adoption And Abandonment Of Voice Shopping With Smart Speakers, Jiahe Lan, Yu Chen, Zheng Yan
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
The recent advances in smart speakers impel the emergence and prevalence of voice shopping - placing orders on voice assistants. Previous work has studied user acceptance of voice shopping and the factors influencing users' experience of voice shopping. However, despite the growing interest in the use of voice shopping, little is known about the limited usage or abandonment of voice shopping. In this paper, we address this research gap through a qualitative study of 43 users of Tmall Genie, a smart speaker popular in China. We found that participants are willing to make low-involvement purchases via voice shopping. However, after …
