Bad Plants, Heather I. Sullivan Dec 2024

Bad Plants, Heather I. Sullivan

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

“Bad plants” represent the seemingly unexpected and startling forms of plant power overlooked by many modern, industrialized societies that treat vegetal beings as mere resources instead of animate, world-shaping forces. Since science fiction and fairy tales often explore more openly animistic visions of non-human life, such texts provide ample possibilities for reconsideration by critical plant studies of our human-plant relations both cultural and ecological. For example, both Jack McDevitt’s 2001 science fiction novel, Deepsix, and Ludwig Tieck’s 1799 fairy tale, “Faithful Eckart and Tannhäuser”, feature “bad plants” that bring human beings violently back into the plant cycles they assume they …

Enhancing Access To Inquiry-Based Art Education In Title I Schools: Addressing Inequities And Promoting Student Driven Learning, Rebecca Stone-Danahy Dec 2024

Enhancing Access To Inquiry-Based Art Education In Title I Schools: Addressing Inequities And Promoting Student Driven Learning, Rebecca Stone-Danahy

All Dissertations

This study investigates the enabling conditions that support inquiry-based art education programs in Title I schools, addressing a literature gap regarding effective practices for high school art educators working with economically disadvantaged students. Inquiry-based art education empowers students by fostering creativity and problem-solving skills and encouraging self-expression. These attributes are essential for equipping students with the tools they need for success in college and their future careers. While existing research has underscored the benefits of the arts for marginalized students, the literature lacks guidance on how to support an inquiry-based art education program in a Title I school.

The study …

The Price Of Precision: Significant Figures And The Student Experience, Ryan Michael Britt Dec 2024

The Price Of Precision: Significant Figures And The Student Experience, Ryan Michael Britt

Dissertations

For students pursuing careers in medicine and science, general chemistry is often viewed as a gatekeeper course. Students struggle with general chemistry for a variety of reasons, one of the most common being mathematical difficulties. Compared to other lower division STEM courses, mathematical computation in general chemistry represents a unique challenge for the student due to the special emphasis placed on reporting answers to the proper degree of precision using significant figure (SF) rules. Although these rules feature in nearly every undergraduate chemistry course, their impact on the student experience of learning chemistry has never before been studied.

The purpose …

The Application Of Thai Classical Fiddle Techniques For Cello, Athita Kuankachorn Dec 2024

The Application Of Thai Classical Fiddle Techniques For Cello, Athita Kuankachorn

Dissertations

While non-Western cultural influences have become increasingly more prominent in contemporary cello compositions, Thai classical fiddles—saw duang, saw u, and saw sam sai—which are integral to Thai music tradition, have yet to be fully explored or incorporated into cello works. The complexity of the Thai pitch system, diverse performance practices, and the reliance on oral tradition, which limits written resources, pose challenges to integrating Thai fiddle elements into cross-cultural compositions.

This research examines Thai classical fiddle techniques through a bi-musical approach. Among the diverse practices, the Vorayot Seventeen-Microtone Theory, developed by esteemed fiddle Master Vorayot Suksaichon, …

Evaluation Of Joint Model Imputation Of Multilevel Models, Gabriel Owusu Dec 2024

Evaluation Of Joint Model Imputation Of Multilevel Models, Gabriel Owusu

Dissertations

Missing data is a pervasive challenge in research, particularly in studies involving multilevel models. When left unaddressed or handled poorly, missing data can reduce statistical power and introduce bias, undermining the validity of findings. Although multiple imputation has emerged as a preferred method for addressing missing data due to its ability to provide unbiased and efficient estimates, its application in multilevel modeling remains underexplored. This gap is particularly significant given the hierarchical nature of multilevel data, which requires specialized approaches to imputation. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of joint model imputation in handling missing data …

Anger And Disgust Shape Judgments Of Social Sanctions Across Cultures, Especially In High Individual Autonomy Societies, Per A. Andersson, Andree Hartanto, Et Al Dec 2024

Anger And Disgust Shape Judgments Of Social Sanctions Across Cultures, Especially In High Individual Autonomy Societies, Per A. Andersson, Andree Hartanto, Et Al

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip. Moreover, we find that the experience of anger is consistently the strongest predictor of judgments of confrontation, compared to other emotions. Although the link between …

Corporate Disclosures For Green Supply Chains: Evidence From Scope 3 Emissions Disclosure, Young Jun Cho, Jungbae Kim, Holly I. Yang, Mengjie Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

A firm's decision to initiate Scope 3 emissions disclosure not only reflects their sustainability efforts but also signals their commitment to decarbonizing its value chain, fostering collaboration among suppliers in promoting greener supply chains. Using a generalized difference-in-differences research design, we find that suppliers reduced greenhouse gas emissions following their customers’ initiation of Scope 3 emissions disclosures. This reduction in emissions is more pronounced when the supplier poses greater climate risk and when the customer has a greater need to restore public trust for its climate-related behavior. We also find that this effect varies with the strength of the customer-supplier …

Adipose thermogenesis has been actively investigated as a therapeutic target for improving metabolic dysfunction in obesity. However, its applicability to middle-aged and older populations, which bear the highest obesity prevalence in the United States (approximately 40%), remains uncertain due to age-related decline in thermogenic responses. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic thermogenic stimulation using the β3-adrenergic (AR) agonist CL316,243 (CL) on systemic metabolism and adipose function in aged (18-month-old) C57BL/6JN mice. Sustained β3-AR treatment resulted in reduced fat mass, increased energy expenditure, increased fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial activity in adipose depots, improved glucose homeostasis, and a …

Controlling Anti-Asian Conduct On College Campuses: Can Including Ethnic Studies Programs Help?, Hani Morgan

Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered hostile acts against Asian college students. One of the ways to respond to these acts is to increase Asian American ethnic studies programs and courses. Although critics argue that ethnic studies cause divisiveness, research indicates that they are beneficial to students from all groups. University administrators may fear implementing these programs because they sometimes associate them with the violence that occurred during the late 1960s when students demanded ethnic studies to be included in the college curriculum. But this to a great extent by the poor representation of racial minority groups in the curriculum and …

Digital Footprint Management: Youth And Social Media On Protecting Your Online Identity And Reputation, Jorge Aguiar

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Fifty percent (50%) of youth between the ages of 8 and 17 have been discovered to use the internet and social media services on a daily basis. This (50%) also demonstrates the rising issues between digital footprints, cyberbullying, and cybercrime rates against these types of youth. It was discovered that youths, between the ages of 8 and 17 years old, are savvy with technology, based on gender, grade, and socioeconomic status, but also lack the awareness of their own digital footprint and how to manage it. Researchers have discovered that issuing cybersecurity awareness school lesson plans and parental controls may …

Marianismo:Challenging Traditional Mexican-American Roles For Women, Clarissa Aileen Montalvo Dec 2024

Marianismo:Challenging Traditional Mexican-American Roles For Women, Clarissa Aileen Montalvo

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

While plentiful research has examined Machismo as a gender role norm for Mexican men, little has examined the role of women’s traditional Marianismo roles. Research identifies 5 “pillars” of Marianismo: family, virtuosity, subordination, self-silencing, and spirituality. I was interested in whether adhering to some traditional pillars of Marianismo (e.g., family) allow women to break away from other, more oppressive pillars (e.g., subordination, self-silencing). I tested whether traditional Marianismo beliefs impact women’s general mental health, and whether differences in traditional beliefs influence the degree to which women can be challenged to push back against more negative pillars by focusing on the …

Biaxial Strain Tuned Upconversion Photoluminescence Of Monolayer Ws2, Shrawan Roy, Xiaodong Yang, Jie Gao

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Monolayer tungsten disulfide (1L-WS2) is a direct bandgap atomic-layered semiconductor material with strain tunable optical and optoelectronic properties among the monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs). Here, we demonstrate biaxial strain tuned up conversion photoluminescence (UPL) from exfoliated 1L-WS2 flakes transferred on a flexible polycarbonate cruciform substrate. When the biaxial strain applied to 1L-WS2 increases from 0 to 0.51%, it is observed that the UPL peak position is redshifted by up to 60 nm% strain, while the UPL intensity exhibits exponential growth with the up-conversion energy difference varying from − 303 to − 120 meV. The measured …
