The Determinants Of Nonprofit Hospital Ceo Compensation, Derek Jenkins, Marah N Short, Vivian Ho Jan 2024

The Determinants Of Nonprofit Hospital Ceo Compensation, Derek Jenkins, Marah N Short, Vivian Ho

Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy Staff Publications

Hospital CEO salaries have grown quickly over the past two decades. We investigate correlates of rising nonprofit hospital CEO pay between 2012 and 2019 by merging compensation data from Candid's IRS 990 forms with hospital data from the National Academy for State Health Policy Hospital Cost Tool. Almost half of the measured increase in CEO compensation (44.5%) accrued to a "base case" CEO, who was leading a non-teaching hospital system or independent hospital with fewer than 100 beds that earned 0 profits and provided no charity care. Another 28.5% of the measured salary increase resulted from changes in the generosity …

“The Freedom To Teach”: The Role Of (Re)Professionalization In Cultivating Responsive Schooling For Immigrant Students, Adriana Villavicencio, Sarah Klevan, Chandler Patton Miranda, Reva Jaffe-Walter, Hua Sebastian Cherng Jan 2024

“The Freedom To Teach”: The Role Of (Re)Professionalization In Cultivating Responsive Schooling For Immigrant Students, Adriana Villavicencio, Sarah Klevan, Chandler Patton Miranda, Reva Jaffe-Walter, Hua Sebastian Cherng

Department of Educational Foundations Scholarship and Creative Works

While we know that professionalization improves outcomes for teachers, education policy has effectively deprofessionalized teachers, especially those who serve immigrant English Learners. Based on a three-year case study, this paper explores how teachers in an immigrant-serving school exercised autonomy and authority over their instruction and professional development. Drawing on staff interviews and observations of teacher meetings, this paper further describes how these professional conditions positioned teachers to better serve their student population. Our study also revealed the underlying conditions that made teacher autonomy possible, including the negotiation of external policy and a robust model of shared decision-making. By providing rich …

A Prdm16-Driven Signal Regulates Body Composition In Testosterone-Treated Hypogonadal Men, Siresha Bathina, Georgia Colleluori, Dennis T Villareal, Lina Aguirre, Rui Chen, Reina Armamento-Villareal Jan 2024

A Prdm16-Driven Signal Regulates Body Composition In Testosterone-Treated Hypogonadal Men, Siresha Bathina, Georgia Colleluori, Dennis T Villareal, Lina Aguirre, Rui Chen, Reina Armamento-Villareal

BACKGROUND: Testosterone (T) therapy increases lean mass and reduces total body and truncal fat mass in hypogonadal men. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms for the reciprocal changes in fat and lean mass in humans are not entirely clear.

METHODS: Secondary analysis of specimens obtained from a single-arm, open-label clinical trial on pharmacogenetics of response to T therapy in men with late-onset hypogonadism, conducted between 2011 and 2016 involving 105 men (40-74 years old), who were given intramuscular T cypionate 200 mg every 2 weeks for 18 months. Subcutaneous fat (SCF), peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and serum were obtained from …

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Checkpoint inhibitors, which generate durable responses in many cancer patients, have revolutionized cancer immunotherapy. However, their therapeutic efficacy is limited, and immune-related adverse events are severe, especially for monoclonal antibody treatment directed against cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), which plays a pivotal role in preventing autoimmunity and fostering anticancer immunity by interacting with the B7 proteins CD80 and CD86. Small molecules impairing the CTLA-4/CD80 interaction have been developed; however, they directly target CD80, not CTLA-4.

SUBJECTS/METHODS: In this study, we performed artificial intelligence (AI)-powered virtual screening of approximately ten million compounds to identify those targeting CTLA-4. We validated the …

Rationale

Within chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema is characterized by a significant yet partially understood B cell immune component.

Objectives

To characterize the transcriptomic signatures from lymphoid follicles (LFs) in ever-smokers without COPD and patients with COPD with varying degrees of emphysema.

Methods

Lung sections from 40 patients with COPD and ever-smokers were used for LF proteomic and transcriptomic spatial profiling. Formalin- and O.C.T.-fixed lung samples obtained from biopsies or lung explants were assessed for LF presence. Emphysema measurements were obtained from clinical chest computed tomographic scans. High-confidence transcriptional target intersection analyses were conducted to resolve emphysema-induced transcriptional networks. …
