The Role Of Leadership In Embedding Social Emotional Learning For Systematic Change In Chicago’S Elementary Schools, Alexandra K. Dakessian
Dissertations
Students within Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are experiencing an unprecedented level of trauma and displaying an immense need for social emotional support. This work evaluated the implementation of social-emotional learning (SEL) programming in CPS by exploring the roles of stakeholders in implementing SEL support in the district and in individual schools, identifying the barriers to effective implementation, and recommending measures to enhance SEL practices at the local and state levels. Data for the study were collected in 2023 and 2024 through interviews with school leaders and revealed both the progress in SEL integration as well as the significant disparities that …

Protective Play: The Impact Of A Before-School Play Program On Sixth-Grade Students’ Social-Emotional Well-Being, Luleta Dardovski
Dissertations
This mixed-methods study explored the impact of a daily thirty-minute before-school play program on sixth-grade students' social and emotional well-being, using the five CASEL core competencies and S.A.F.E. (Sequenced, Active, Focused, Explicit) framework as guiding principles. The study addressed the central research question: How does unstructured play before school influence students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) skills and well-being? Data was collected through student surveys, interviews with teachers, and observations to explore how play fosters SEL skill development. Play was found to offer an authentic environment for sixth grade students to actively practice SEL skills, fostering benefits in self-esteem, social connectedness, emotional …

Students' Perspectives On Co-Creation Opportunities Within Bachelor's, Master's, And Doctoral Level Education Preparation Programs, Oana M. Manta
Dissertations
This study examines Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral students’ experiences with co-creation activities in education programs. Responding to voiced student concerns, it seeks to uncover ways in which students wish to share ownership of the learning process. Additionally, this study aims to contribute students’ thoughts to the existing co-creation literature. Incorporating evidence from a survey and multiple participant interviews, this study demonstrates that students across all three levels of study wish to experience an increase in co-creation activities, but the type and extent vary by level of study. It argues for instructors and overseeing institutions to negotiate, not prescribe, certain aspects …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
In recent years, researchers from different fields have become increasingly interested in measuring individual differences in mind wandering as a psychological trait. Although there are several questionnaires that allow for an assessment of people's perceptions of their mind wandering experiences, they either define mind wandering in a very broad sense or do not sufficiently separate different aspects of mind wandering. Here, we introduce the Brief Mind Wandering Three-Factor Scale (BMW-3), a 12-item questionnaire available in German and English. The BMW-3 conceptualizes mind wandering as task-unrelated thought and measures three dimensions of mind wandering: unintentional mind wandering, intentional mind wandering, and …
Utilizing Machine Learning For Categorizing Disaster-Related Tweets, Ahmad Alfalasi
Utilizing Machine Learning For Categorizing Disaster-Related Tweets, Ahmad Alfalasi
Theses
This study presents the development of a machine-learning model that recognizes tweets about disasters in real-time. The fast-paced development of social media, especially Twitter, has drastically changed the field of news transmission during crises. This change creates new challenges for the management of the volume, velocity, and veracity of data that are generated in such situations. The present tools do not have the capabilities of real-time processing of the huge volume of data; hence, new solutions are required. The model we are proposing addresses this problem by using advanced machine learning methods, such as natural language processing, to filter and …

General Versus Interventional Gastroenterologists: A Comparative Analysis Of Follow-Up Outcomes After Endoscopic Mucosal Resection Of Colorectal Polyps, Mahmoud Y. Madi, Yassine Kilani, Hayden Rotramel, Michelle Baliss, Jill Elwing, Gregory Sayuk, Ahmad Bazarbashi
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Introduction Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents a major global health burden, significantly impacting mortality rates and healthcare systems worldwide. CRC screening through colonoscopy enables early detection and removal of precancerous polyps. While standard polypectomy suffices for small polyps, larger ones require endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). Though post-EMR surveillance is crucial for preventing recurrence, it remains unclear whether follow-up by general gastroenterologists yields comparable outcomes to surveillance by interventional specialists. This distinction carries significant implications for resource allocation, particularly given the limited availability of interventional gastroenterologists whose expertise is needed for other complex procedures. Our study examines this unexplored question by comparing …

Predictors Of No-Shows After An Endoscopic Mucosal Resection In Veterans: A Retrospective Analysis, Mahmoud Y. Madi, Yassine Kilani, Hayden Rotramel, Michelle Baliss, Jill Elwing, Gregory Sayuk, Ahmad Bazarbashi
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Introduction Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is a common intervention for large colorectal polyps, but its long-term success depends heavily on post-procedure surveillance to detect recurrence. Despite the critical importance of follow-up appointments, some patients fail to attend these crucial visits. This study aims to identify demographic, clinical, and socioeconomic factors that predict missed follow-up appointments after EMR. By understanding which patients are at the highest risk for non-compliance, we can develop targeted strategies to improve follow-up adherence and optimize long-term outcomes in this population. Methods We conducted a single-center retrospective study at the Saint Louis Veterans Affairs Healthcare System of …

Ethical Intelligence: Responsible Ai Integration In Challenge-Based Learning, Seden Dogan
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The paper explores the ethical integration of AI in Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) within higher education. CBL fosters critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world problem-solving. AI enhances CBL by providing personalized learning, adaptive problem-solving, and real-time feedback. However, ethical concerns—such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, faculty roles, and governance—must be addressed. The paper proposes a framework for responsible AI integration, emphasizing inclusive access, data ethics, human-AI collaboration, governance, interdisciplinary co-design, iterative ethics, and digital literacy. AI can augment learning, improve scalability, and enhance faculty roles, but risks like inequity, over-reliance, and weak accountability must be mitigated. The framework ensures AI aligns …

A Search For Self Through Allyship And Advocacy ‘About, With, And As’ Multilingual Learners: An Autoethnographic Study, Molly Heeren
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This autoethnographic study uses personal memoirs to explore the author’s allyship and advocacy efforts throughout the past 24 years in the language teaching profession. Through the process of self-reflexivity and introspection, “turning points” are investigated to understand more about what influences the actions and behaviors of allyship or advocacy ‘about, with, and as’ multilingual learners. As a district level instructional coach and teacher of multilingual learners in both elementary and adult settings, the author’s revelations in teaching identity, influences of Empire, misalignment of the ‘sense of language,’ and legitimate peripheral participation in communities of practice become salient issues. The dynamics …
When Language Policy And Planning Is A Missed Opportunity: Lessons Learned From A Proposed But Not Implemented Dual Language Bilingual Education Program, Jessica Mitchell-Mccollough
When Language Policy And Planning Is A Missed Opportunity: Lessons Learned From A Proposed But Not Implemented Dual Language Bilingual Education Program, Jessica Mitchell-Mccollough
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
When populations undergo demographic shift, as in Nebraska in recent decades, educational practices can establish or reinforce hegemonic practices through denial or legitimization of language, culture, and identity, or they can be counterhegemonic. The demographic changes in Nebraska have been defined by a growth in Latinx populations (Morales, et al., in press). As a result, there have been various efforts to explore dynamic shifts in educational programs offered to support students’ unique language acquisition needs, including growth in dual language bilingual education (DLBE). However, not all communities have responded uniformly. During a recent strategic planning process Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) …

Georgia’S Law Of Rules: Textualism And A Survey Of The Canons, Matthew P. Cavedon
Georgia’S Law Of Rules: Textualism And A Survey Of The Canons, Matthew P. Cavedon
Mercer Law Review
Before a travel guide can be written, there has to be a map; before treatises can be written, there have to be surveys. This Article is a survey of Georgia textualism and every canon the Supreme Court of Georgia has recognized in its 180-year history. I begin with a general overview of textualism: the priority of plain meaning, legal context, and legal history (Part I). If there is no ambiguity, “our search for [legal] meaning is at an end.”
But of course, this frequently fails to be the case, so I have read nearly 4,000 cases in search of the …
Tackling Terry: Georgians’ State Constitutional Protections On Searches, Seizures, And Privacy, Hunter J. Rodgers
Tackling Terry: Georgians’ State Constitutional Protections On Searches, Seizures, And Privacy, Hunter J. Rodgers
Mercer Law Review
Currently found in Paragraph XIII of our state Bill of Rights, Georgia has had a search and seizure provision in its Constitution for over 160 years. For the last sixty, our courts interpreted it in lockstep with the Fourth Amendment. Countless cases treat our state provision as an afterthought, only worth mention as an aside to the Fourth Amendment, or in acknowledgment that the court was not reviewing on state grounds, or both. Even where the Georgia Supreme Court issues opinions enhancing search and seizure protections, or at least arguing for it, it shunts Paragraph XIII into a corner to …

Addressing The Public Health Concern Of Maternal Mortality In Houston, Texas, Lucy Couture
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Maternal mortality remains a pressing public health concern in the United States, with disproportionate consequences for marginalized communities. Despite being a developed nation, the U.S. reports one of the highest maternal mortality rates among its peers, with approximately 80% of maternal deaths deemed preventable. Texas reflects this national crisis, particularly affecting Black women, whose maternal mortality rate is significantly higher than that of other racial and ethnic groups. This thesis explores maternal mortality trends in Houston, Texas, analyzing the roles of systemic inequities, social determinants of health, and disparities in access to quality care. Drawing on data from the Texas …

Rape Beyond Fantasy: Exploring The Influence Of Booktok's Erotica And Dark Romance Literature On Young Adult Perceptions Of Consent And Boundaries, Teagan Bailey Fortune
Master's Theses
Advances in technology and media, particularly TikTok, have had a significant impact on the younger generation. BookTok, a community that emerged from TikTok, is a platform where users can promote, share, and discuss book recommendations, using “spice level” or chili emojis to indicate the rating of explicit content. While recommendations often focus on erotica and dark romance fiction, concerns arise when such content glamorizes and normalizes rape culture, especially for young adults (YA). The normalization of toxic relationships can potentially influence YA perceptions of consent and boundaries. This study explores how YA perceive rape culture and consent in erotica and …
